Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs & Cast Sheep, Monday 5th August 2024.
Prime Lambs
A bigger show of 550 lambs were put before a full ring side of buyers, all keen to purchase all types of lambs. Heavy bred first cross Suffolks sold to £178 from R&D Kellet, Cockerham with Texels to £175 from B&J Preston, Caton and Beltex cross to £172 from C Ellison, Pilling. Best bred lambs were keenly bid for, with these regularly 340p/kg to 350p/kg. The best sold to 362p/kg for a pen of Beltex from C Ellison, Pilling with others to 360p/kg from P&V Bennett, Lancaster. Well finished commercial type lambs were regularly 320p/kg to 330p/kg, with other slightly under finished lambs below 300p/kg. A bigger show of hill bred lambs were forward, with a run of well finished Masham lambs from S&J France, Over Wyresdale to £130. A pen of 36kg Horned lambs sold to £102.50 from W Pinder, Clitheroe. More lambs could have easily been sold to the vendor’s advantage.

100 ewes were forward, selling to an over average of £122. Pure bred Texels sold to £252 from JRP Hughes, Quernmore. A pen of strong first cross Texel ewes sold to £196 from CM&CA Jackson, Caton with the strongest end £180 plus. Strong Mules sold to £172 from JE&J Pye & Son, Quernmore who sold other pens to £164, with nice meated sorts £130 to £140. Dalesbred ewes sold to £112 from D&J Hay, Cockerham, with Herdwicks to £102 from W Pinder Jnr, Clitheroe. Meated strong Horned ewes were regularly £85 to £95.

Prime Lambs
A pleasing entry of 1574 lambs were forward, and sold to a strong average of 309p/kg. Once again here at Junction 36 all heavy lambs were adding up nicely. Texel sold to £187 from M&RW Stirzaker, Milnthorpe. Beltexs sold to £177 from J&R Waller, Killington. Charmoise sold to £175 from LA&M Lambert, Lupton and Suffolks to £169 from WT Whitaker & Son, Nether Kellet. Heavy pens were regularly £155 to £165. Best bred lambs saw Beltexs to 370p/kg from C Henderson, Chipping, who also sold Blue Texels to 355p/kg. The best bred lambs were regularly 335p/kg to 350p/kg. Nice meated commercial bred lambs were 320p/kg to 328p/kg. More Mule lambs were on offer today, with the best selling to £145 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale, with a full ring full to £139 from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton.

An entry of 438 cast ewes were forward, with all categories selling to an increased trade on the week. Top price of the day was £272 for a Texel from D&S Robinson, Old Hutton. All strong well fleshed pure bred Texels surpassed £220. The best of the first cross ewes reached £216 from SW Atkinson, Crook, with these types regularly north of £180. Hampshire sold to £192 from J&O Galbraith, Endmoor with Charollais from JG&BJ Escolme, Killington at the same price. A good entry of Mule ewes sold to £186 from SW Atkinson, Crook with Masham’s reaching £174 from MA&JA Winn, Burneside. Hill ewes sold to £182 from for Cheviots from D&S Robinson, Endmoor with the best of the horned ewes reaching £132 from GW Robinson, Milnthorpe. Cast rams sold to £185 for a Suffolk and £178 for a Texel.

Calves
The Junction 36 fortnightly sale of calves and stirks saw an entry of 92 forward, with all goods keenly bid for. Top price in the calves today was £600 for a British Blue from MJ Carefoot, Longridge, with an additional five British Blue bulls surpassing the £550 mark. Native sired bulls sold to £440 for an Aberdeen Angus from J&S Brakewell, Kirkby in Furness, with Herford’s from HM&SJ Morris, Grange Over Sands at the same price. Charolais reached £430 and £420 from Bambers Farms, Cockerham. The best of the dairy bulls reached £200 for a Friesian from Messers Sowerby, Appleby. Heifer calves sold to £595 for a British Blue from MJ Carefoot, Longridge with other British Blues at £560 from Messrs Sowerby, Appleby. Aberdeen Angus sold to £410 from Kirkby & Longworth, Broughton in Furness with Herefords to £370 from Bambers Farms, Cockerham.
Stirks sold to a top of £990 on three occasions for a British Blue, Simmental and Limousin, all from Bambers Farms, Cockerham. S Mason, Old Hutton reached £800 for a British Blue bull. An additional two Charolais bulls from AK&BM Robinsons, Arkholme also selling for £800, at four month old. Freshly weaned Aberdeen Angus steers from Messrs Young, Lindale reached £690, with a trio of Aberdeen Angus heifers from J&R Waller, Killington reaching the same price.

Dairy bred Aberdeen Angus sold to £1280 from A&B Pickthall, Hincaseter who sold Limousins to £1250. A run of first cross British Blue bullocks from J&R Waller, Killington saw their best Limousin to £1090, with yearling grazing bullocks regularly £1000 plus. British Blue heifers sold to £1190 from Saunders and Noble, Kirkby in Furness with Aberdeen Angus to £1130 from S&M
Cooper, Leece. Yearling sucklers sold to £1080 from F&JM Mason, Mansergh. More store cattle are needed on a fortnightly basis, to satisfy buyers demands.

A nice entry of OTM’s were forward, with trade considered to be strong for all classes forward. Topping the pence per kilo today at 224p/kg was a Limousin from NW&EM Mason, Middleton. South Deven cows reached 204.5p/kg, with the best of the dairy cows 199.5p/kg from Messrs Dennison, Ulverston. Top gross price today was a Blonde cast bull weighing 1021kg, returning £1883.75. Top grossing cow achieved £1774.40 for a 920kg Hereford from GM Redmayne, Ings. Top grossing dairy cows achieved £1527.37, weight 806kg for a Friesian from WH Kitching & Son, Helsington.

Native sired calves to £510 for a Hereford bull from E&J Redmayne, Winmarleigh and native heifers to £470 for a Hereford from TE & M Kidd, Ellel. Store Cattle
A catalogue entry of 262 store cattle was put before a packed ringside of prospective buyers with all classes considered to be dearer than of recent weeks.
The top spot was shared by 3 vendors this week, firstly for a pair of Aberdeen Angus x bullocks from R&E Butterfield, secondly another Aberdeen Angus x bullock from B & J Preston and finally for a British Blue x bullock from T & E Burrow all returning £1800. Shorthorn bullocks to £1760 from GR & A Foy and Charolais bullocks to £1730 from H Birkett & Son.
Heifers reached £1720 twice, one of those being a Charolais from JM Haddow and the other an Aberdeen Angus x from CP Bateman. EJ Hodgson was close behind with their Fleckvieh returning £1700.
A good run of Friesian bullocks from EE Thornton & Sons saw a top of £1480 for a pen of 5. Keen interest in 14-15 months old cattle with 14 month old Charolais bullocks to £1280 x6 from A&V&A Thornton, with 12 month old Aberdeen Angus bullocks to £1060 from S&J France.

OTM Cattle
The weekly sale of otm cattle this Friday saw a total of 98 through the bottom ring, consisting of 73 otm cows, 13 otm heifers, 7 otm steers and 5 otm bulls. Cows saw an average of 173.4p/kg, topping at 259.5p/kg or £1816.50 for a cracking Limousin cow from TW Gorst, Crook. Other beef bred cows saw GJ & V Parkinson, Preesall with a Hereford at 179.5p/kg or £1534.73
Friesian cows saw a top of 209.5p/kg or £1623.67 from J&G Thornley, Roseacre, not far behind was Lawsons Farm Ltd, Cockerham at £1620. Plenty of other good meated cows round the £1450-£1550 mark. Cows straight out of the parlour look a decent trade, round the 155-170p/kg mark.
OTM heifers saw an average of 237p/kg with regular Lancaster supporters A&FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel at 274.5p/kg or £1822 for a British Blue. R Collinge & Son, Newton with a good run of Limousin heifers topping at 267.5p/kg or £1709.33 with others at £1636.43. Friesian heifers saw Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale at £1693 or 234.5p/kg.
Cast Steer trade saw plenty of interest with R Collinge & Son, Newton continuing a good day at 279.5p/kg or £1914.58 with T & E Burrow, Slyne showing British Blues to 269.5p/kg or £1627.78.
Cast Bulls averaged today 213p/kg with J Miller, Preston taking the top spot at 239.5p/kg or £1844.50. Other beef bred bulls to £1628.05 from Messrs Hey & Sons, Quernmore.
