The perfect storm brewing at Junction 36! Pedigree in lamb sheep were an ice cool trade from start to finish for all breeds.

North West Auction held its annual in lamb sale of pedigree sheep on behalf of the Beltex sheep society. The pre-sale show was kindly judged by Liam Swinnerton, who made the following prize awards:

A ewe topped the Beltex trade at 900gns, which was the champion sheep on the day consigned by Messrs Jennings of the Hallcrake flock. Beltex shearlings ewes sold to 700gns from TC Whitford of the Tercrossett flock. Ewe lambs hit 500gns twice from DE Owen, who received first prize and reserve champion for one of his run.

The North West Texel Breeders Club annual show and sale of individual pedigree Texel in lamb females and ewe lambs was once again met with a good following at Junction 36 Rural Auction Centre. The pre sale show was kindly judged by James Porter of the Saltcotes Flock, and he awarded the following results;

Texel trade continued the day in the same good fashion, with an exceptional clearance rate to match.

D Gray of the Tima flock topped the sale with a gimmer shearling selling for 2800gns. The overall champion from Messrs Boden & Davies, a fantastic shearling sold for 2000gns. Messrs Gray of the Ettrick flock sold a gimmer for 1800gns, with Boden & Davies selling one for 1500gns.

Pedigree ewe lambs saw a phenomenal amount of interest, with vendors rewarded for the quality put forward today. They peaked at 1500gns for the days reserve champion, lot 141 consigned by D&J Dunlop of the Holtridge flock, with its stablemate lot 143 consigned by R Dunlop achieving 1400gns.

The sale featured the Beautry dispersal on behalf of S Currie, Rathmell which saw ewes and shearlings to 700gns. However, topping this consignment was the much-admired ewe lamb lot 157 reaching 800gns. This dispersal sold to an average of £535.

Badger Face Texel

The sale also included a section for Badger Face Texels, these saw keen bidding from near and far. The sale reached a top of 1000gns for a ewe lamb (lot 305) consigned by Hannah Pedley of the High Ploughlands flock. A consignment of ewes from A&S Miles of the Red Syke flock reached 650gns.

Dutch Spotted

Dutch Spotted society sale also attracted spirited bidding, this section topped at 1000gns for in lamb shearlings from J Stead of the Middlemoor flock, with other shearlings to 700gns from D Bezuidenhout of the Black Dub flock. Ewe lambs sold to 750gns from J Stead, with the consignment from JA Dixon of the Grayrigg Foot flock reaching 500gns twice.

Multi Breed

The multi breed sale saw in lamb Charollais ewes from RJ&J Towers, Ingleton sell to 650gns, with Suffolks from this same good farming to 550gns. The run of Rouge and Rouge cross ewes from I McConnell, Dumfries reached 450gns twice.

Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Prime Hoggs & Cast Sheep. Monday 6th January 2025.

Prime Hoggs

Prime hoggs sold to £191 and 374p/kg.

The opening sale of prime hoggs was well supported by local and loyal vendors, who were greeted by a ringside of buyers with orders to fill.

Today’s sale peaked at £191 for Texel cross hoggs from J Twigge, Lindale who enjoyed selling other pens at £189 and £185. Other heavy weight hoggs were generally £155 to £170, as were the best bred standard weights. The best of these sold to £170 for Beltex cross from KA Purtill, Wigan who sold other lighter weight hoggs at £157 again for Beltex cross. A top of 374p/kg was achieved for a well finished run of continental hoggs from KA Purtill, Wigan with other well finished and well bred hoggs nicely 330p/kg to 350p/kg. First cross hoggs were 310p/kg to 325p/kg. Hill bred hoggs sold to £160 for Cheviots from P Prickett, Hutton Roof with Mules to £155 from D&J Hay, Cockerham. Other heavy weights were £127 to £135. Horned lambs sold to £130 from A&L Huddleston, Wray.

All hoggs averaged 318p/kg (35p/kg up on 2024).

Cull sheep continue to sell at the recent high levels, with all forward averaging £128. Texel cross ewes sold to £182 from P Lawrenson & Son, Brindle with other better mediums £140 to £160. J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Prime Hoggs & Cast Sheep, Tuesday 7th January 2025.

Prime Hoggs

A remarkable surge in the prime hogg trade to kick off 2025. J36 saw its weekly sale of prime hoggs take on a new gear, with a very healthy ring side of buyers with a large appetite for all types.

The sale topped at £220 for Texels from H Geldard, Levens. A further five lots of sheep including Cheviots sold over the £200 mark. Mules were a particularly good trade today, topping at £167 from FI&ME Little, Kendal. Horned sheep also up a good portion on the last sale. Pence per kilo was topped by R Allen, Ings for a Beltex selling at 380p/kg, shortly behind was P Whitton & Son, Burneside who sold a pen of three continental hoggs to 376p/kg, with over 50% of the sale in the heavy or very light category and the biggest show of Mules and hill sheep to recent date. A very encouraging overall average of 336p/kg was achieved. As momentum continues here, we urge vendors to get in touch and join us next week to take advantage of current trade.

What a start to the year, with buyers ringside ensuring a red-hot trade to warm the hearts of vendors. The sale peaked at £234 for a trio of Blue Faced Leicesters from EW&JR Parkinson, Dunsop Bridge. Closely followed by a pen of five BFL’s from R Harker & Son, Grayrigg selling at £230. Other stronger end ewes were regularly £180 to £210, with Mules just short of the mark peaking at £198 from AW Crowe, Witherslack and TMW&H Hodgson, Nibthwaite. Suffolk cross sold to £180 from K&S Troughton, Sedbergh. Mashams sold to £178 from EJ Hodgson & Son, Lambrigg and Cheviot Mules £168 from M Allen, Carnforth. Other stronger end Mules and first cross ewes were regularly £155 to £180, with mediums £135 to £150, and lighter weights £110 to £125. Hill ewes sold to £132 for Swaledale’s from D&P Johnson, Broughton in Furness with Rough Fells to £126 from RJ&OB Simpson, Longsleddale. Several ring fulls of well-fed Swaledales were regularly £118 to £125 from R Harker & Son,

Grayrigg. Rings full of Herdwicks from SC Gorst, Broughton in Furness sold at £106. Medium hill ewes were regularly £80 to £100, with only the very smallest and leanest less.

Calves

The opening sale of rearing calves saw a fast trade for all breeds and types, with no weakness show from an eager ringside of buyers.

A superb entry of British Blue cross bulls, saw the best six week old sell to £590 from AE Luffman, Howgill with others achieving £550 from JW&TE Sharp Ltd, Lyth and £540 from A Pickthall, New Hutton. The best of the younger end sold to £405 from DR&C Galbraith, Grayrigg. Other young (three week old) Limousin cross bulls sold to £290 from B&MJ Nelson, Haversham. A high level of interest on British Blue cross heifers, with many finding homes as future suckler replacements, the best achieved £470 for a seven week olds from A Pickthall, New Hutton with endless British Blue cross heifers £390 to £440. B&MJ Nelson & Son, Heversham sold a young Limousin cross to £290.

Native sired calves once again attracted a keen interest, with several specialist buyers present. The best Aberdeen Angus cross bulls sold to £480 from W&S Airey, Whittington with other younger rearers to £270 from FB Dunning & Son, Orton and £265 from Colby Farms, Appleby selling three week old bulls. Young Shorthorn bulls sold to £170 from RG&JA Clarke, Endmoor. Heifers sold to £425 for an Aberdeen Angus cross from W&S Airey, Whittington with younger rearers generally £220 to £265. Only a handful of dairy bulls forward, with mediums selling to £140 on several occasions, with all sold averaging £94

Stirk

The largest entry of weaned calves and stirks for a long time saw 100 forward selling to a red-hot trade warming all vendors hearts, many new faces ringside were keen to secure all classes and types. Many buyers leaving unable to fill trailers and keen to return to the next sale on Thursday 23rd January at the earlier start time of 10.15am.

An eye-catching run of Limousin cross steers and heifers from B Heys, Mosborough saw seven month old steers selling to £1090, with others regularly £900 to £1000 and heifers selling to £1020, with a ring full of red five month old heifers at £970. Other Limousin cross steers sold to £1030 at eight months old from M Gibson, Sedbergh. Other younger steers saw eight month old Aberdeen Angus cross sell at £900 from Millfield Stud, Settle and a ring full of ten month old Blue Greys from M Gibson, Sedbergh achieving £890. Six month old dairy bred Aberdeen Angus cross bulls from Messrs Young, Lindale sold at £820. Dairy bred beef heifers sold to £660 for a Charolais cross at six months old, with Simmental cross at £600 from S&M Carter, Witherslack and British Blues £600 at five months old from W Stamper, Chipping who also sold Aberdeen Angus cross heifers at £580.

A nice number of bull stirks forward sold to £1270 for a eight month old South Devon from AT Threlkeld, Ulverston with other younger six month old bulls to £910 for a Limousin cross from J&SE Woof, Dent. Dairy bred beef bulls sold to £680 for a six month old Hereford cross, with Aberdeen Angus cross £620 and British Blue cross £590. Dairy bulls sold to £480. Store Cattle

The store cattle trade was out of this world.

J36 held its new year show and sale of store cattle and witnessed a level of trade on a different planet. 470 store cattle forward soared from minute one, as an extremely busy ringside of buyers fought hard for all types. A twenty month old Limousin heifer rocketed to the top price of the day from MA &JA Winn, Kendal which sold for £2200. Heifers sold to £2160 from S Whitehead, Middleton. M&L Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale sold a Limousin heifer to £2100. A huge number of other heifers sold between the £1900 to £2000 mark. Bullocks also saw the same good treatment, topping at £2020 for a pair of twenty month old British Blues from MA&JA Winn, Kendal. JA&J Harper, Killington then sold two bullocks at £2000 apiece, including todays champion and winner of the Janet Gorst perpetual challenge trophy, which was awarded for a fantastic Blonde bullock. The show was kindly judged by Mr John Kelsall and the trophy presented later in the ring by Mr Joe Gorst.

OTM Cattle

A great opening sale saw the older hard worked types proving their worth, with an overall market average of 193p/kg. Beef cows sold to 224p/kg for a Simmental cross from Messrs Beaty, Windermere with other better feeding types regularly 205220po/kg and lesser sorts 180p/kg upwards. Top grossing was a Luing from Messrs Westmorland - Nicholson, Troutbeck grossing at £1651.

The best heavy and well fleshed dairy cows sold to 219p/kg from RG&JA Clark, Endmoor with others 209p/kg for Holstein Friesians from Jenkin Cragg Farms, Kendal. Other mediums were 185p/kg -200p/kg and parlour types 165p/kg -180p/kg. Top grossing being a Holstein Friesian from Jenkin Cragg Farms, Kendal totalling £1768.

OTM heifers sold to 254p/kg and £1455 for Aberdeen Angus cross from JG&BJ Escolme, Kendal who also sold Holstein Friesian heifers at 229p/kg and £1420.

OTM steers sold to 284p/kg and £1869 for an Aberdeen Angus from JW Robinson & Son, Farleton.

A single Limousin cull bull sold at 184p/kg and £1612 from Messrs Beaty, Windermere.

NWA Lancaster held its popular weekly cattle sale, with all stock selling to an exceptional high price capable of melting the freezing weather outside.

Calves

The sale of weanling and calves saw an eager ringside of buyers. Beef bulls sold to a top of £685 for a Charolais cross from J&G Thornley, Kirkham with similar aged British Blue cross selling to £645 and £610 from FW Rhodes & Son, Ellel with others £560 to £600. Strongest rearing bulls sold to £505 for a British Blue cross from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale with other younger sorts regularly £290 to £360, depending on age and strength. Native sired bulls sold to £460 on two occasions for 12 week old Aberdeen Angus cross from J&G Thornley, Kirkham. 8 week olds sold to £400 and £395 from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale. An entry of young Hereford cross bulls from MJ&H Atkinson, Quernmore sold to £245 at 20 days old. Only a handful of dairy bulls forward which saw the best medium rearers sell to £180 from both J Bargh & Son, Morecambe and Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale, with others £120 to £150.

Weanable heifer calves saw British Blues sell to £590 and £575 from RW Rhodes & Son, Ellel with younger rearing heifers £360 for British Blue cross from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale with others £270 to £300. Strongest native sired heifer sold to £410 for Aberdeen Angus cross from J&G Thornley, Kirkham with rearing Aberdeen Angus cross to £250 from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe. Young Hereford sold to £195 and £185 from MJ&H Atkinson, Quernmore, with others £160 to £180.

Stirks

Just a handful of stirks forward saw a ring full of British Blue cross steers from PS&H Eckersley, Mellor sell at £780, with heifers from the same home at £715. A nice pen of recently weaned Aberdeen Angus cross from I Richardson, Catforth saw bulls sell to £700 and a ring full of heifers at £540. Other stronger bulls (8 months) from TD&A Gardner, Larbreck saw British Blue cross sell at £900 and Hereford and Aberdeen Angus cross £860.

Store Cattle

An entry of predominately stronger store cattle sold to prices well ahead of vendors expectations, with many reporting ahead of other local centres. Todays sale peaked at £2200 for an Aberdeen Angus cross steer from A&E Clarkson, Cockerham. A ring full from SH&LE Birkett, Nether Kellet sold at £2140, with others at £2060 from M Shepherd, Pilling, £2020 from JB Moore, Allithwaite and £2000 from JA&F Nutter, Clitheroe. Endless pens of well grown steers were £1850 to £2000, to include Aberdeen Angus cross selling to £2080 from SH&LE Birkett, Nether Kellet, £1960 from TC Whiteside & Son, Pilling, £1900 from JB Moore, Alithwaite and J Oddie, Balderstone. Diary bred steers saw a remarkable rise in trade, with Holstein Friesians selling to £1800 from A&E Clarkson, Cockerham with this price also achieved for a ring full of British Friesians from EE Thornton & Sons, Morecambe who sold others at £1780. Montbeliardes sold to £1660 from J Maxwell, Halton with other stronger dairy steers regularly £1350 to £1500. A keen interest in younger cattle, with 14 month old British Blue cross selling to £1580 from V&S Fitzell, Much Hoole, 13 month old Aberdeen Angus cross sold to £1460 from AJ Metcalfe, Out Rawcliffe.

A pair of British Blue heifers from SH&LE Birkett, Nether Kellet topped the sale at £1980, with others at £1880 from AT Burrow & Son, Gressingham. Aberdeen Angus cross sold to £1860 from JB Moore, Alithwaite with £1840 achieved from P&S Alpe, Clitheroe. Other stronger heifers were £1650 to £1800. Much like the steers, a keen interest in younger heifers, with 14 to 16 month old heifers regularly £1320 to £1480.

OTM Cattle

The day commenced with cull cows which saw an overall market average 198p/kg and £1248, with a large proportion of the sale being diary cows direct out of the parlour. Of the few beef cows forward, these sold to a top of 289p/kg for a Limousin from JM&JJ Dawson, Littledale with other heavier feeding types regularly 220p/kg to 240p/kg. Top grossing being an Aberdeen Angus from GR&A Foy, Conder Green achieving £1811. Heavy well fleshed dairy cows were keenly sort after, selling to 209p/kg from Lawsons Farm, Cockerham with others achieving 204p/kg from DW&E Cottam, New Hutton. Others were regularly 190p/kg to 198p/kg, mediums 175p/kg to 188p/kg with just the leanest and lightest weight less. Top grossing was another Holstein Friesians from Lawsons Farm, Cockerham at £1770, with endless dairy cows £1250 to £1400.

A large number of cull stock bulls sold to 264p/kg for a Simmental from EJ&PJ Burrow, Storth with other beef bulls 190p/kg to 230p/kg and diary bulls to 185p/kg for a Holstein Friesians. Top grossing was a Blonde from MJ Whitworth, Bolton Le Sands totalling £2244.

OTM prime heifers sold to 319p/kg for an Aberdeen Angus from O Butler, Espbrick with other beef heifers regularly 300p/kg to 315p/kg. Dairy heifers sold to 285p/kg for Holstein Friesians from Barker Farms, Cockerham. Top grossing was a heavy weight Holstein Friesians from AT Burrow & Son, Gressingham achieving £1805.

OTM steers sold to 324p/kg on two occasions again for Aberdeen Angus from O Butler, Espbrick who sold others at £2080. More cull cows and OTM cattle are required every week, with all vendors leaving well suited with prices achieved, ahead of other local centres.
