Lancaster Hill Fair Day saw a large crowd of buyers keen to secure all classes and types of breeding sheep. North Country Mule shearling sold to £240 on several occasions from M&YS Barker, Halton. Llyne Mule shearlings sold to £215 from J Duerden, Dalton in Furness with other shearlings regularly £175 to £190. Texel cross two to three crop ewes sold to £190, with other two crop Texel cross £185. Ewes were generally £140 to £165.
Mule Gimmer lambs sold to £175 for the first prize pen from RG&H Preece, Roeburndale with this price also achieved from JW Cornall & Sons, Bleasdale. Stronger pens of Mule gimmer lambs were £140 to £160, with running type lambs £110 to £125. All gimmer lambs sold averaged £148.
Breeding rams sold to a top of £800 for a Texel shearling from H Carter, Ellel with others at £780 from T&CM Kelsall, Chipping. Texel shearlings were regularly £500 to £750. Texel ram lambs sold to £400 from B&M Slater, Chipping.
The sale concluded with store lambs, which sold to a top of £113 for Texel cross lambs from PJ&SM Woodhouse, Forton. A ring full of Texel cross Cheviots from SE&J Gorst, Littledale achieved £105. Mule sold to a top of £86 with Mashams at £82. Smaller long keep lambs were £65 to £78, depending on breed and quality.

Once again, another rise in numbers saw 829 lambs at the popular Monday morning sale, with hard fed lambs continuing to see the best returns, with out of spec and under finished lambs a more selective trade, with several pens at realisation. Sellers are encouraged to treat their lambs to hard feed, to ensure maximum returns.
The best pure and three quarter bred lambs, having been of fed, were rewarded with premium price selling to a top of 340p/kg was a Texel from KA Purtill, Wigan. Beltex cross to 331p/kg, 324p/kg, 322p/kg from PJ&ES Rogerson, Appleby with others at 321p/kg from WS Burrow, Silverdale, 315p/kg TR Prickett, Hutton Roof, 313p/kg J Twigge, Lindal and 312p/kg JE Harrison, Winmarleigh. Other pens were regularly 295p/kg to 310p/kg. Well finished first cross lambs were generally 285p/kg to 305p/kg, depending on weight and quality. The best grass finished lambs were 275p/kg to 280p/kg, with more commercial sorts 250p/kg to 270p/kg.
Todays sale peaked at £152 for heavy weight Texels from JR&J Gorst, Quernmore and E&R Cranshaw, Brindle. Other heavy weight lambs were generally £140 to £148. The best standards weight lambs £128 to £135, with light weights £110 to £118.
Hill bred lambs coming forward in greater number, accounting for 35% of todays sale. North County Mules selling to £128 and 276p/kg, Cheviot Mules to £135 and 292p/kg, Cheviots to £135 and 276p/kg. The first Swaledales of the season sold to £110.50 and 251p/kg.
Todays sale achieved a market SQQ of 277p/kg for all sold, with lambs ranging from 26kg to 84kg. Vendors are encouraged to draw lambs on finish and not solely on weight, to ensure maximum returns, vendors are advised to strongly consider feeding lambs, as grass quality diminishes.

The strongest ewes sold to £210 for Texels form A Birchall, Dolphinholme with other better strong continentals £170 to £195. The best first cross sold to £150 for Suffolk cross, with others £128 to £140. Heaviest Mules sold to £137 from E&R Cranshaw, Brindle with other at £133 and a ring full at £130 from J Pinder & Son, Newton who also sold Lonk ewes to £123. Other hill ewes sold to £134 for Cheviots, Swaledale to £111, Dalesbred to £91, Herdwicks to £80 and Welsh to £64. Keep these ewes coming, with 200 plus required every week to fulfil buyer requirements.

New centre record of £7000 at J36 The popular annual show and sale of BFL rams and females saw averages up across the board. The £7000 sale topper was the much admired West Biggins T13 from WM Reed & Sons, Lands Farm. Sired by Highberries H2 and out of a Carry House Jackpot Dam this ram found its new home with S & T Fawcett, Fold House. Two ram lambs reached £3000, firstly for the pre sale show champion Cottage T13 from J Bell, Birniehall Farm, this boy goes to join the Castle Hill flock with P & A Fell, Ulverston. The second ram lamb to reach £3000 was the 2nd prize Maqueston T4 from A Brown, Thornhill who also sold to South Cumbria this time going home with AR Edmondson, Hawkswell. H Huddleston, Carnforth reached £2800 for Snab Green T9, he sold to Paul Hallam, High Birkwith. Two lambs at £2000, firstly Otterburn Lodge T8 from JA & R Caton, Otterburn selling to RG & H Preece, Thornbush Farm. Also at £2000 was Carry House T54 from RD Archer & Son, Hexham with this lamb selling to County Durham with HW & MA Alderson, Howgill Grange. Shearling rams received a huge level of interest, selling to £2200 twice, firstly for Red Way S2 from L White, Derbyshire with this home selling Red Way S1 to £1800 both going home with J Handley, Gunnerfleet. The second shearling to reach £2200 was Lakeland Valley S1 from R Lawrence, Greaves which sold to NR & CS Hodgson, Ravenstonedale. D Sharp, Flodder Halls consignment reached £2000 for Flodder Hall S3 bought by TLB & J Knowles, High Borrowbridge. £1800 was paid for Midlock S74 from J Wight & Son, Biggar, winner of the shearling class & reserve champion in the pre sale show this ram sold to S Dugdale Ltd, Tilberthwaite.
Aged rams to £1500 for M39 Hewgill from AR Edmondson, Hawkswell, this 2 shear selling to SJ & C Handley, Thornton Hall. Next at £1300 was the Midlock bred 3 shear from CM & J Stott, Laund Farm selling to S Dugdale, Tilberthwaite. The sale commenced with all classes of females, which saw buyers keen to secure additional stock to expand flock bloodline. Gimmer shearlings sold to a top of £450 for a Black Edge, Midlock J3 sired shearling from Messrs Mycock & Bright, Buxton, who sold other shearlings at £380 twice and £350. The consignment of shearlings from RT Parker of the Bleasdale flock sold to £300 on two occasions. Gimmer lambs sold to £250 from the Long Garth flock consigned by R&LM Berry, Cartmel Fell who also sold a two crop Lunesdale P38 ewe at £350.

Store and weaners continue to sell well with a pen of seven from Belmont Farm achieving £92 while fourteen weaners from SP Pheonix made £65.
Prime Lambs
The weekly sale of 1400 prime lambs sold, once again well fed and well bred lambs continue to be well bid for at Junction 36. The sale topped for a Texel at £168 from R Allen, Ings with Charolais lambs to £163 from JE&WB Wearing, Millom and Cheviot Mules to £161 from M Robinson, Stainton. Many pens of heavy continental lambs were regularly £140 plus. The smartest bred lambs saw Texels to £157 from PJ&ES Rogerson, Appleby with Beltexs to 330p/kg from AW&AM Clark, Windermere with others at 322p/kg from R Allen, Ings. Commercial export type lambs, full of meat, were regularly 270p/kg to 280p/kg. The second show and sale of gimmer lambs at Junction 36 saw a catalogue entry of 1200 forward selling to a full ring of prospective buyers. The sale commenced with North England Mules with these selling to a top price of £158 for a pen of ten from JD&M Capstick, Bootle. N Cooper, Ulverston reached £148, while the pick of I Clarkes, Kendal run achieved £145. Cheviot Mules were easy to place, with these selling to £162 for a bonny pen from J Duerden, Dalton in Furness. Two pens from JW&E Woof, Firbank reached £148, with only the smallest end £120 or less. Continental gimmer lambs saw the very best types sell to an exceptional rate with a run of Beltex from R Allen, Ings seeing highs of £170. Next at £164 was a pen of Texel cross Lleyn Mules from P Knowles, Kendal this run of powerful gimmers saw others to £146. The smaller end of gimmer was inline with store trade.

Well bred health long keep lambs were £82 to £90. Mules sold to a top of £107 for a ring full from Fishwick Bros, Longsleddale with other strong Mules £108 to £105 and longer keep farming sorts £88 to £94. Calves & Weanlings
70 calves and weanlings were forward today, with trade a touch sharper on the week. Bull calves were the top side of £600 three times, topping at £635 for a British Blue from J&G Thornley, Kirkham with another at £610 from JM&MH France, Littledale. Finally at £600 was another British Blue from J&G Thornley, Kirkham. Native sided bulls sold to £520 and £500 for an Aberdeen Angus cross from J&G Thornley, Kirkham. Dairy bred bulls sold to £450 for a Montbeliarde from E&J Redmayne, Winmarleigh.
