Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Prime Lambs & Cast Sheep. Monday 4th November 2024.
Prime Lambs
Monday morning maintains momentum with all vendors leaving well satisfied with prices achieved and an overall market average of 284p/kg achieved. Todays sale topped at £164 for a well finished Texel cross lamb from Susan Purtill, Wigan. Closely followed by others at £162 from KA Purtill, Wigan, CD&HL Mason, Caton and £161 from TR Prickett, Carnforth. Other well finished pure and ¾ bred lambs met the keenest buyer demand, with these sorts regularly £135 to £150, first cross lambs were £122 to £128. The best lighter weight lambs sold to £128 for Beltex cross. Todays sale peaked at 360p/kg for a Texel from CD&HL Mason, Caton with other better end lambs 320p/kg to 340p/kg. Well finished standard lambs were 285p/kg to 305p/kg, with lighter weight and grass finished lambs 265p/kg to 280p/kg, depending on quality and type. Hill bred lambs now coming forward in greater numbers, with Cheviots to £146 and 311p/kg, Mules to £122 and 277p/kg and Horned to £116 and 264p/kg.
Vendors are reminded that gates open at 7am, with weighting from 7.30am and vendors are encouraged to arrive in good time to allow for a prompt sale start at 10am.

Cast Sheep
Two full rows of ewes sold to another animated trade, an overall average of £89.40 achieved with ¾ of the sale being leaner hard worked hill ewes. The sale topped at £166 for a trio of Texel cross ewes from P Whitton & Son, Burneside with other better end cross bred ewes £125 to £145. Mules sold to £137 with other stronger pens £118 to £130 and medium Mules £88 to £105. Pure hill ewes sold to £114 for Cheviots, with others £82 to £95. Horned ewes sold to £65 for Dalesbreds and £64 for Swaledales. Keep these ewes coming, 200 are required every week to fulfil buyer demand.

Prime Lambs
Fireworks in the fat lamb ring at Junction 36, prime lambs rocketed to £175 on several occasions for Texel cross from TMW&H Hodgson, Nibthwaite. Other heavy weight well finished lambs were regularly crackling away between £150 and £165. Standard weight lambs whizzed to £151 from AT Burrow & Son, Hornby on three occasions, with others nicely selling at £138 to £145.
A pen of Texel cross lambs sparkled in the ring, selling to 333p/kg from LE&A Ridding, Selside. Others crackled away at 305p/kg to 330p/kg. Lambs sold to a blazing market averaged of 298p/kg, with another good entry required next week.

Breeding Sheep
The sale commenced with all classes of breeding sheep, which saw aged Texel rams sell to £300. Mule gimmer lambs sold to £124, £117 and £108. Hill bred sheep saw three crop Herdwick ewes sell to £104, with broken mouth Herdwicks selling to £68 and others at £58. Herdwick gimmers lambs sold to £64, Welsh Badger Face Mountains to £64 and Swaledale to £62. North West Auctions sale of store lambs saw 4218 lambs sell to an average of £101.73. Trade was good from start to finish with the sale peaking at £141 for a pen of Beltex from JE Wightman, Lupton. Others sold to £140 from AE Atkinson, Kendal and a pen of twenty one to £137 from W&J Penny, Kirkby in Furness. A pen of nine Cheviots sold to £135 from RW&SA Nicholson, Lupton with Suffolks to the same price from DH Hogg, Appleby. No less than fifteen Hampshire’s sold to £130.50 from Colby Farms, Appleby with Romneys to £122 from this home. Rough Fells reached highs of £125 from A O’Neil, Sedbergh and Mules to £117 from B Wilson & Sons, Selside. Swaledale sold to £108 from JR Robinson, Nook and Herdwicks to £89 from S Procter, Selside.
All short-term Continental lambs easily sold the top side of £115, with mediums £100 to £110 and only long term less. Mules seeing a big increase on the fortnight, with the strongest of these £100 plus. Horned and hill lambs possibly seeing the biggest lift, being up in the region of £22.25 on the fortnight.
Winning the awards this week and receiving a café Ambio voucher for the highest priced pen of twenty five or more lambs were:

Nice show of calves in today with all classes and types selling to a competitive ringside of buyers. Calves to £600 for a Charolais bull from JG Thornley, Kirkham with others to £590 from this home. Next at £530 was a British Blue bull from AD Milner, Brock, one of 3 vendors in the convoy from Claughton this morning. Other British Blue bulls to £465 from JM & MH France, Littledale and natives to £380 from AD Milner, Brock. Dairy bulls to £270 from JR Newsham, Conder Green. Heifer calves to £370 for British Blue also from the Milners with Limousin to £345 from MH & AR Robinson, Holmescales. GP Stott, Parkers Farm also headed north on the A6 selling Angus heifers to £285 at 1 month old and British Blue to £270 at the same age. Stirks were on fire, TD & A Gardner, Great Eccleston selling British Blue bulls to £910 and £850 with Herefords to £620 from JR Newsham. A consignment of fresh weaned Angus heifers sold to £480 from JK & BJ Birkett, Morecambe. Please continue to book calves in with confidence.

The weekly store cattle sale saw a few less about this week with trade up and beyond vendor expectations. Making the headlines today would be regular Lancaster supporters J Lamb, Glasson for a Charolais steer at £1920. Other Charolais steers to £1900 for a trio from GT & CA Blezard, Conder Green with JM Haddow, Milnthorpe at the same price who also had a pair of Angus steers at £1900 with G Sagar & Son, Caton at £1820 for a pen of 4 and L Parsons & Sons, Levens at the same price. R Capstick & Son, Ingleton led the way with Limousins to £1880 with others from JB Moore, Grange over Sands to £1640. G Sagar & Son, Caton continued their good days trading with Herefords to £1810 for a pen of 4. Simmental steers from M & RW Stirzaker, Milnthorpe to £1900. Low Moor Howe, Winster with a pen of 4 to £1740. British Blue steers to £1780 from R & A Easterby, Westhouse. Plenty of other blue steers round the £1700 mark. Friesian steers again a flying trade to £1610 from J Lamb, Glasson with others from L Parsons & Sons, Levens to £1580. All steers averaged £1561. No let up in trade for heifers, these averaged £1442. Topping this week would be R & DM Rossall, Pilling with a pair of British Blues to £1840, others at £1800 from AT Burrow & Son, Gressingham. Plenty of other blue heifers around the £1700 mark. Aberdeen Angus heifers at £1720 from BW & G Robinson, Carnforth, with others at £1700 from TJ Robinson, Milnthorpe. Plenty of other Angus heifers round the £1500 mark. Limousin heifers to £1660 from MJ Waller, Carnforth with others to £1640 from R & DM Rossall, Pilling. Cull cows from 3 counties descended upon Lancaster auction mart this Friday. With all cows sold averaging a staggering 193p/kg and £1276 with over half the entry being dairy bred and parlour type cows. Best beef cows sold to outstanding top price of 300p/kg from M & RW Stirzaker, Milnthorpe with heavy well-fed Stabilisers from JA & R Geldard, Levens hitting 294.5p/kg on 2 occasions with others at 284.5p/kg. Other strong end beef cows regularly 230-280p/kg to include British Blue x and Limousin x from MA & JA Winn, Burneside, Simmental x from PJ & ES Rogerson, Appleby, Aberdeen Angus x and Shorthorn x from A Guy, Farsley. A staggering 6 beef cows sold over £2000 to include a quartet of Stabilisers from JA & R Geldard, Levens peaking at £2318. A further 15 beef cows sold between £1700-£1950. Dairy cows held their own against their beef counter parts selling to top of 260p/kg on 2 occasions for Montbeliarde and Black and Whites from EW & RM Towers, Hornby with endless heavy well fleshed selling between 210-230p/kg, mediums 185-198p/kg with harder working parlour type cows 130-160p/kg.
Dairy cows sold to a top of £2000 for a Montbeliarde from EW & RM Towers, Hornby with Holstein Friesian selling to £1821 from MS & G Mason, Carnforth with other heavy well fleshed cows regularly £1350-£1600.
OTM beef heifers sold to a top of 285p/kg from JC Prickett, Mewith with other better end beef heifers regularly 260-280p/kg. Top grossing being a Limousin x achieving £1774. Dairy heifers sold to top of 255p/kg and £1397 from AT Burrow & Son, Gressingham. OTM beef steers sold to 285p/kg and £1897 for British Blue x from A Knight, Dalston.
