Weekly Report and Newsletter - 12th January 2024 Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Prime Hoggs, Store Hoggs and Cast Sheep, Monday 8th January 2024. Prime Hoggs Just shy of 500 prime hoggs were forward at Lancaster, As seen nationally trade was a little back following the festive period. Best quality and well meated lambs continue to attract plenty of bids from our full ringside of buyers, with leaner hoggs a little harder to place. Top price saw texels sell to £152 from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof with Beltexs selling twice to £146 from J France, Pilling. Plenty of pens sold over 300p/kg, with the best to 312p/kg for Beltexs from R&DL Cornthwaite, Nateby and Texels 310p/kg from AG Butler, Hambleton. Export type lambs were keenly bid for with 42kg to 46kg hoggs achieving 260p/kg to 272p/kg. Hill bred lambs saw Cheviots sell to £128 from KA Purtill, Wigan with other Cheviots to £126 from AG Butler, Hambleton. Masham sold to £118.50 from A&MA Wright, Roeburndale East with 43kg Mules to £110 from S Park, Arkholme. A full ring full of Swaledale sold to £102.50 from KJ&KM Curwen, Abbeystead. Weekly Sale of Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep, Tuesday 9th January 2024 Pigs The opening sale of pigs saw 162 forward with a total clearance achieved and vendors leaving well suited with prices. Todays sale saw new customers in attendance from throughout the Northern counties and Scotland. Prime pigs sold to a top price of £172 for a trio of Large White cross hogs from JM Navesey, Darwen with £176 achieved for prime gilts from M Sharpe, Aspatria and Pie Train cross boars from D Nicholson, Cockermouth. Other well finished gilts and hogs were regularly £130 to £150, with lighter weights £100 to £125. 180p/kg topped todays sale for Pie Trian cross gilts from M Sharpe, Aspatria with others at £182 from R Ellison, Ulverston. Cull sows sold to £180 and 72p/kg for a Large Whites from W Stamper, Chipping. The largest entry of store and weaners was seen for several sales, a top price of £63 was achieved for Saddleback cross gilts from A Alston, Brechin who sold others at £55 and £50. Weaners sold to £56 for Pie Train cross gilt from MJ Postlethwaite, Cockermouth who sold others at £48 and £46. Other well bred weaners and stores were regularly £45 to £50, with the smallest £15 to £25. Prime Hoggs 1100 prime hoggs were forward, selling to a nice trade throughout, with an overall average of 268p/kg achieved. Heavier hoggs were a sharper trade than first expected, with Beltexs to £164 from T Ellis, Kendal. A pen of sixteen Suffolks from L McCarrick, Chorley sold to £158 who also sold Texels to the same price. Charollais sold to £150 from JG&PH Thompson & Sons, Selside. Heavy Continental lambs full of meat were regularly £130 to £140. A sharp trade was seen for all export type hoggs, with these regularly 275p/kg to 285p/kg. Pens of 44kg Texels sold to £132 from GM&A Jackson, Little Eccleston. Hill bred lambs saw pens of Cheviots to £148 from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston with Cheviot Mules to £137 from AA Bentham, Dent. Heavy well bred ewes sold to £164 for a Texel from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe with other Continentals achieving £160 from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston. Mediums pure bred ewes were generally £120 to £135. First cross ewes sold to £128 for Texel cross from EJ Hodgson & Son, Lambrigg with others £124 from TH&D Cornthwaite & Sons, Cartmel Fell. Others were generally £110 to £120, with mediums £90 to £105. Cheviot Mule sold to £132 from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston with others at £114 from MA&M Richards, Kirkby in Furness. North Country Mules sold to £109 from Strickland Hill Farming, Witherslack and £108 from TW Wilson, Flookburgh and W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe. Other heavy Mules were generally £95 to £105, with the best mediums £88 to £94 and the smaller end £75 to £85. Pure hill ewes sold to £106 for Cheviots from S Thompson, Flookburgh with Rough Fells achieving £100 from WJ Dawson, Sedbergh and Gritstone £98 from FW Park, Windermere. A large number of medium hill ewes were forward with Herdwicks to £60 from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston and Swaledales to £62 from J Taylor, Kendal. Others were regularly £50 to £55, mediums £40 to £50 with only the smallest and leanest less. A large number of cull rams were forward, being predominately leaner Continental sorts. Calves 139 calves forward saw bulls sell to a top price of £490 for a Charolais cross from Messrs Gibson and Berry, Endmoor. British Blues sold to £455 from HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick and £400 from DR&C Galbraith, Grayrigg. Other stronger continental bull calves sold at £340 to £380, with mediums £270 to £330. Native sired bulls sold to £340 for an Aberdeen Angus cross from W&S Airey, Whittington who sold Hereford cross at £330. A large number of young native bulls were generally £160 to £210. Dairy bulls sold to £200 for Black and Whites from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe who sold others at £190 with stronger rears £140 to £160, mediums £95 to £120, with only the smallest and youngest £40 to £50. Store Cattle The New Year Show and Sale of Store Cattle kicked off with a bang, with a sharp trade for all cattle from start to finish. The pre-sale Show, kindly sponsored by the Rural Law Practice saw the Championship rosette and the Janet Gorst Perpetual Trophy awarded to MA and JA Winn, Burneside with the Reserve honours going to the same good farming family. Outside the Show, the sale topped at £2020 for a Limousin heifer from MA and JA Winn, Burneside who sold Blue heifers to £1900 with other blue heifers selling to £1820 from SJ & A Hargreaves, Middleton, The bullock trade saw British Blues sell twice to £1800 from RT Gorst, Killington and MA & JA Winn, Burneside, with Limousins selling to £1780 from RG & L Holmes, Warton. Stronger, well meated cattle, were regularly selling at £1650 to £1700. A run of 14 month old Blonde heifers from PJ & ES Rogerson, Great Asby saw the best sell to £1680, with Limousins selling to £1680 at the same age from Messrs Hodgson, Rydal. Yearling bullocks saw a sharp trade throughout with a pair of Limousins selling to £1560 from D & A Nicholson, Ulverston, with yearling heifers selling to £1520 from M & L Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale. OTM Cattle The opening sale of cull and OTM cattle saw an extremely strong trade for all classes and types, with an overall market average of 169.5p/kg achieved. Heavy well fleshed beef cows sold to 234.5p/kg for a young Aberdeen Angus cross from M Allen, Carnforth with Stabilisers to 221.5p/kg from A Dixon & Son, Selside and British Blue cross to 214.5p/kg from JA&J Harper, Sedbergh. Other heavier well fleshed beef cows were 190p/kg to 205p/kg. Todays sale peaking at £1753 for an eight year old Stabiliser from A Dixon, Selside. Dairy cows sold to a top of 197.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from KE Robinson, Farlton with British Friesians selling to 179.5p/kg from JW Hargreaves, Brought in Furness. The popular Friday sale at NWA Lancaster saw over 600 cattle forward, selling across all rings with vendors leaving well suited with prices achieved and many reporting ahead of other local centres. Dairy Cattle A small show of dairy this week saw new calved Holstein heifers sell to £1800 from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe with cross breds to £1550 from R&K Jenkinson, Pilling. Calves Another rise in number saw 127 forward, with new customer once again in attendance both buying and selling. Bull calves sold to £490 for a Limousin from I Atkinson & Son, Warton. A large number of rearing bull calves forward sold to £390 and £380 for five week old Charolais cross bulls from RT Halhead, Cockerham, with others regularly £350 to £375. British Blue cross bulls sold to £335 from Mason Birkland Barrow, Carnforth with other at £335 from I Atkinson, Warton. Sweeter young rearers sold to £300 from Throstle Nest Farms, Pilling and Barber Farms, Claughton on Brock. Other mediums bulls were regularly £250 to £300. OTM Cattle An increase in numbers forward saw 160 head sell to an active ring side of ten buyers, who can easily cater for all forward. 150 OTM cattle can easily be sold at Lancaster every week. Beef cows sold to 194.5p/kg for a Limousin from JM&JJ Dawson, Littledale with others at 189.5p/kg from T Ayrton & Sons, Over Wyersdale and M&L Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale. Other better end beef cows were generally 170p/kg to 180p/kg, with a keen interest in those suitable for feeding. Top grossing today being a Limousin from JM&JJ Dawson, Littledale achieving £1400. Heavy well fleshed dairy cows were easily sold, peaking at 214.5p/kg for a young Holstein Friesian from WG Farms, Cockerham with other heavies to 184.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe and 181.5p/kg for a Montbeliarde from A&FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel. Other well fleshed dairy cows were regularly 165p/kg to 180p/kg, with medium 145p/kg to 160p/kg and only the lightest and leanest less (generally 120p/kg to 140p/kg). Top grossing dairy cow was a Holstein Friesian from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe achieving £1476 who also sold others at £1471 and £1457 from Lawsons Dairy, Cockerham. Heavy well fleshed dairy cows were regularly £1300 to £1400. Well fleshed mediums were £1100 to £1200.
