Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Prime Lambs & Cast Sheep. Monday 9th September 2024.

NWA Lancaster catches the trade again, with the new start time of 10am.

Prime Lambs

Vendors from the three local counties descending on Lancaster and were duly rewarded, with a market average of 297.25p/kg for all lambs sold, ranging from 33kg to 55kg. Once again, well bred and well finished lambs were keenly sort after selling to a top price of 414p/kg and £182 for Charollais cross Beltex lambs from CF Hargreaves, Overton with other best bred lambs regularly selling at 340p/kg to 365p/kg and £150 to £170 per head. Well finished first cross lambs sold to 355p/kg for Texel cross from DR Preston, Caton who sold others at £170. Other well finished first cross lambs were regularly 300p/kg to 320p/kg, depending on weight and finish, this equating to £122 to £135. Light weigh lambs sold to 324p/kg for Texel cross from R Collinge & Son, Kirkham who sold other at £120, with other well bred light weight lambs 290p/kg to 300p/kg, being £98 to £110. Hill bred lambs are now coming forward in greater numbers, with Mules selling to £134.50 and 284p/kg, with others 275p/kg to 285p/kg depending on weight and finish. More lambs are required every week to satisfy the expanding ring side of buyers.

Cull ewes sold to a top price of £192 for a Texel cross from S Rossall, Over Wyresdale with other medium first cross ewes £130 to £145. Best heavy Mules sold to £136, with medium types £90 to £110 and leaner grazing types £75 to £88. Hill ewes sold to £100 for Cheviot, with lighter and leaner Swaledales selling to £58. Thank you to all vendors for the cooperation with allowing the earlier start time of 10am.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Pigs, Prime Lambs & Cast Sheep, Tuesday 10th September 2024.

Pigs

An increased entry of 129 prime and store pigs forward today, seeing trade marginally easier than previous sales. The sale topped at £280 for a pair of prime hogs from JM Navesey, Darwen, with Wendy Stampers pair of gilts next in line reaching £265. Stronger better finished pigs regularly breaking the £200 barrier. Large show of cull sows was forward, these topping at £100. Store pigs topped at £85 for a pen of 6 and weaners reached £70 for pen of 5.

A few less lambs were forward with the ongoing breeding sheep sales, with once again all buyers wanting meated / fed lambs and these a pleasure to sell. A super pen of heavy Texel lambs from IM Jaeban, Isel sold to a top of £192 with others selling to £189 from the same home. Pens of Suffolks sold to £170 from J&R Waller, Killington with others at £168 from S Coward, Allithwaite. Heavy bred lambs were regularly £140 plus. Best bred lambs saw Texels to 348p/kg from J&R Waller, Killington with Beltex to 340p/kg from M&RW Stirzaker, Milnthorpe. The best bred lambs were regularly 325p/kg to 330p/kg with nice bred commercial sort 290p/kg to 300p/kg. More Mules on the market now with a ring full to £130 from Drinkall Bros, Lancaster with other pens to £129 from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton.

Cast Sheep

Numbers rising week on week with several additional grazing orders now ringside and will continue to be for the foreseeable future. Just a handful of the very strongest ewes forward selling to a top of £224 for a Texel from J Stott Jnr, Crosscrake with other pure and pedigree regularly £180-£210. Best first cross ewes sold to £178 for a Texel x with other stronger end £150-£165, mediums £125-£140 with keenest interest in grazing types £98-£115. Mules saw a top of £180 for Cheviot Mules with medium cheviot mules £120-£140, with North Country Mules £120-£135 with mediums £90-£108 and light weight mules £75-88. Pure hill ewes sold to £126 for Cheviots, with other stronger end £105-£120. Medium hill ewes selling to £88 for Scotch Blackface, £78 for Rough Fell, £68 for Swaledales. Smaller hill ewes £55-£65 with the very smallest and leanest generally £30-£45.

Consignment of goats sold to top price of £100. Cull rams sold a top price of £200 for a Texel from IM Jaeban.

Store Lambs

An ever-increasing ring side of local and travelled buyers were in attendance, all keen to secure lambs and take advantage of the recent flurry of grass. The best bred lambs were in short supply and keenly competed for, selling to £130 for Texel cross, with other at £123 and £122. Other pens of well grown continental lambs were regularly £105 to £118, with medium longer keep lambs £92 to £104. Suffolks sold to £109, with other medium keep lambs £92 to £101. Hill bred lambs are coming forward in greater numbers, North County Mules to £99 and Cheviot Mules £96. A large proportion of medium longer keen Mules forward today were £86 to £91. Cheviots sold to £93, Gritstones to £89 and Herdwicks to £85. Younger and smaller hill bred lambs were generally £50 to £65, depending on breed and quality. An overall market average of £91.31 was achieved, for a sale of true store lambs. Next sale is on Thursday 26th September with an anticipated entry of 4000 to 5000, please contact the office with entries.

Calves & Weanlings

58 were forward in the calf section today at Lancaster, with trade remaining firm for all types.

Rearers sold to £630 from J&C Thornley, Kirkham with this run of British Blue bulls also reaching £600 and £595, with younger British Blue bulls to £575 from JP&C Robson, Brock. Native sired bulls sold to £470 from JR Newsham, Conder Green with this home producing the top price black and whites at £310. Rearing heifers reached equal interest, with these reaching £480 and £450 for Charolais cross from GP Stott, Claughton on Brock. British Blues sold to £430 from G&ME Woodhouse, Ellel and Hereford to £370 from JR Newsham, Conder Green.

Weaned calves sold to £700 for Aberdeen Angus bulls from J&G Thornley, Kirkham with a run of Herefords from TE&M Kidd, Ellel reaching £585.

Heifer Calves Top Prices: Charolais: £480 Parkers Farm. British Blue: £430 Boldens Farm, £250 Wyre bank, £230 Westfield House Farm. Hereford: £370 Sellerley Farm.

Store Cattle

The weekly sale of store cattle at Lancaster saw 300 through the main ring, with trade very similar on the week. A good show of strong steers and heifers were out in front of a large ringside of buyers, all eager to keep fattening pens full of cattle. Steers today averaged £1430 and heifer £1349. Making the headlines this week with his regular consignment of quality cattle was JM Haddow, Hincaster with a trio of Charolais steers at £1970 and a pair of Charolais steers at £1910. Achieving the same price was both B&J Preston, Caton for a single Aberdeen Angus and RH Dodgson, Carnforth with a pen of five well farmed Charolais steers. Not far behind was TE JS &SA Carruthers, Underbarrow at £1900 for a stylish Limousin steer. A pair of Simmental steers sold to £1870 from EJ&PE Burrow, Storth with other Simmentals from R&E Ladds, Kendal. Friesian steers sold to £1440 for a pen of four from loyal Lancaster supporter EE Thornton & Son, Heaton, with others at £1430 x5 from the same good home. Plenty of other 22-24 month old steers were around the £1680 to £1800 region.

Store heifers saw plenty of demand with P Whitton & Son, Kendal to £1680 for Limousins, with TE JS & SA Carruthers, Underbarrow at the same price also for a Limousin. Simmental heifers from EJ&PE Burrow, Storth sold to £1640, with other Simmental heifer to £1560 for a pen of four at twenty months old from R&E Ladds, Kendal. Aberdeen Angus heifers always create plenty of interest at Lancaster and this week was no exception, with a trio to £1540 from AT Burrow, Gressingham and M Shepherd & Sons, Pilling. British Blue heifers saw MJ Waller, Lupton to £1530 for a pair, who also had Charolais heifers to £1520.

88 OTM cattle were forward, with OTM steers topping the p/kg a 274.5 for an Aberdeen Angus cross from Pilling Hall, Pilling. OTM heifers sold to 264.5p/kg from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale. Cows sold to 249.5p/kg and 239.5p/kg both for Simmentals, with these achieving top grossing cows at £1796 and £1793. Black and White cows sold to 217.5p/kg from PW&JM Norris & Son, Hornby with plenty over 190p/kg. Top grossing price was a cast bull from SW&K Metcalfe, Whittington reaching £2032. Dairy cows sold to £1676.50 from P&M Crackles, Carnforth with many the top side of £1480.

The Ambleside Show and Sale of Gimmer Lambs had a nice entry of 1500 lambs with a real buzz around the ring of both local and travelled buyers. The pre-sale show was kindly judged by Tom Proll from Devon and sponsored by RE Consultants, MB Nutrition, Carrs Billington and The Milking Parlour.

The Champion pen of lambs sold to a top price of £275 from R Lawrence, Field Broughton. This cracking run of lambs also saw other pens sell to £200. A pen of sweet running lambs from AC & K Pye sold to £160, with the nicer pens regularly selling at £140 - £150. With smaller runners regularly selling at £128 - £132.

Rough Fell Mules saw more interest than in previous years with the best pens selling to £160 from I & J Mallinson, Selside with other pens to £142 from TLB & J Knowles, Selside. A lovely run of Lleyn Mules from P Knowles, New Hutton saw a top of £192 with others selling to £170, with Cheviot Mules selling to £160 from JD & PH Thompson & Sons, Selside.

An overall average was achieved of £128, this being £27.50 up on the year.
