The closing sale of breeding sheep at Lancaster Auction Mart saw a real buzz about the place, with everything selling to a fast trade. The pre sale show was in the capable hands of Mr William Gardner, who we thank for this time and expertise. A pen of Texel ewes sold to £170 with aged Mule ewes to £132, also from the same home. Hill ewes saw a top of £110 for Cheviots from W Pinder, Newton in Bowland with Swaledale ewes selling to £80 from the same home. A keen interest for all gimmer shearlings, with first cross Texels selling to £190 from J France and Mules selling to £170 from W Pinder, who sold others to £160. Cheviot shearlings sold twice to £125 from JR&JF Worthington, Burnley. 400 gimmer lambs forward saw Dutch Spotted sell to £200 from KP Dagger, Preston. Mule gimmer lambs saw a keen interest in well grown gimmers, with the best selling to £140 from A&L Huddleston, Wray with others selling to £120 from JW Cornall, Bleasdale and Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. Smarter running Mule gimmer lambs were regularly selling at the £90 to £100 mark. A full ring side of buyers ensured all tups sold to full value, Texel shearling sold to £650 from T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping who sold others £480. Hazel Carter, Ellel saw her best sell to £450 with the same price being achieved for pure Texels from PF Lee, Over Wyresdale. Texel ram lambs saw the best sell to £350 from PF Lee, Over Wyresdale with others at £300 from the same home. 400 store lambs forward with a keen ring side of buyers, looking to purchase all types. The sale topped at £93.50 from PD Pye, Over Wyresadale. Other pens of Texels sell to £93 from SE&J Gorst, Littledale who sold a full ring of Cheviot weathers at £84. International Interest At NWA J36 Machinery Sale The monthly collective sale of tractors, vehicles, machinery and equipment saw an entry of over 1500 lots offered with buyers successfully making purchases from all corners of the UK, alongside our strong Irish and European customer base. An impressive line up of over 60 tractors and vehicles saw a JCB Js145 tracked digger achieved £15200 and a JCB 530/70 farm special telehandler sell at £15100. A HZM loadall achieved £14000, a Kubota mini digger sold at £6000 with others at £4600 and £4100, a small worksite tracked dumper sold for £2700 and a Terex 3T dumper sold for £2600. Tractors sold to £5100 for a JD3400 4wd with a JD2650 2wd selling £4700, a fordson major sold for £3000 and a grey Fergusson to £1000. Vehicles included a citroen relay van at £2100, Kawasaki mule at £1950, a Renault 3.5 T horse lorry which sold to £1900, a Kubota UTV made £1400, a ford transit van sold to £1000 and a Landrover discovery also made £1000. Well maintained machinery always sells with keen interest in seasoned items, a Ktwo rear discharge muck spreader sold at £7000, a cattle feeder wagon sold for £4800, a Marshall muck spreader made £3200, hydraulic post knocker sold to £2500, a hedge cutter sold to £2400, a nugent bale unwrapper made £1750, a log processor sold at £1550. Trailers sold to £4000 for an IW plant trailer. £3500 for a 20ft livestock trailer, £3300 for an IW livestock trailer, £2500 for a welfare trailer, £1900 for an IW plant trailer and a Graham Edwards

Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep, Monday 9th October 2023. Prime Lambs 666 lambs were forward with all selling to a competitive trade, to include 105 Swaledale wethers with an overall averaged of 242p/kg achieved. Smart bred Continental lambs achieved a nice trade with Beltexs selling to £143 from GR&A Foy, Conder Green. Texel sold to £140 from AG Butler, Hambleton with Suffolks selling to £138 from TM Townley, Over Wyresdale. Heavy lambs full of meat continue to add up nicely, regularly selling at £125 to £132. A nice trade for meated farm assured, export type lambs with these regularly selling at 255p/kg to 265p/kg or £108 to £115 per head. Mules saw a top of £114 for a pen of twenty two from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton with Cheviots selling to £113 from KM&KJ Curwen, Abbeystead. Top pence per for kilo was 325p/kg from GR&A Foy, Conder Green with the same good home selling Texels to 311p/kg. Smart bred lambs were regularly selling at 280p/kg to 290p/kg. Buyers were showing caution over under finished and grass fed lambs, with some of these lambs looking better suited to the buoyant store market. J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Pigs, Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep, Tuesday 10th October 2023. Pigs The call for prime pigs was answered, with vendors well pleased with prices achieved and buyers grateful for the pigs being presented for sale. The sale topped at £235 for a Large White x gilt from W Stamper, Chipping who sold others at £225, £220 and £205. Other pigs to break the £200 barrier saw a pen full of Large Black x gilts from H Kent, Cockerham achieving £205 with P&L Murrey, Penrith selling a Large White x at £200. Other well bred well finished gilts and hogs were regularly £180 to £200. C Dean & LJ Brennand, Clapham topped the market with light weight hogs at 253p/kg, with others at 244p/kg and 238p/kg. Other well finished gilts and hogs were 195p/kg to 200p/kg, with lighter weights 170p/kg to 190p/kg. Cull sows sold to £155 and 73p/kg form R Jackson, Cockermouth with boars to £150 and 59p/kg form A Preston, Whitehaven. Super heavy lambs (50-55kg) were regularly selling at £130 to £140. Charollais lambs sold to £134 from RR&JA Knowles, Docker with Suffolks selling to £133 from DE&SM Moorhouse, Natland. Medium export lambs were keenly bid for with these regularly selling at 255p/kg to 260p/kg or £112 to £115 per head. Beltexs saw the best sell to £130 from WS Burrow, Silverdale. More hill lambs are coming forward with Cheviots selling to £120 from GM Metcalfe, Underbarrow who also sold Cheviot Mules to £117. Suckler Calf The first prize show and sale of 500 suckler calves saw one of the best entries of calves seen at Junction 36 for some time. Which were put before a packed ringside of buyers, ensuring a flying trade from start to finish, with vendors reporting trade being £80 to £100 up on the year. The pre sale show was kindly sponsored by I’Anson and Shap Fell Garage. The judging was in the capable hands of Mr C Walton, Bootle who we thank for his time and expertise. Cull cows sold to a top of 199.5p/kg on two occasions for a Limousin x form J Black & Son, Kentmere and a Stabilisers from A Dixon & Son, Selside. Other heavy well fleshed beef cows were regularly 180p/kg to 195p/kg, with medium meated cow attracting a keen interest for finishing. Top grossing beef cow was a British Blue x achieving £1345 from J Black & Son, Kentmere. Dairy cows sold to 171.5p/kg or a British Friesian on two occasions from JW Hargreaves, Broughton in Furness with Holstine Friesian to 157.5p/kg from JM Barton & Son, Kirkby Lonsdale. Calves & Weanlings Another strong entry of 92 rearing calves saw an ever expanding ring side of buyer in attendance, attracted by the regularly quality and quantity at Lancaster Auction Mart. The sale peaked at £515 for an 8 week old British Blue x bull from B&JM Crowe, Witherslack who sold others at £485. Other stronger bulls sold at £460 for Aberdeen Angus x from W&G Cornthwaite & Son, Claughton on Brock. Limousin x sold to £454 from CR Ford & Co, Ulverston who sold others at £435 and £425. Other stronger bull calves were regularly £360 to £310. Month old bull calves sold to £295 for a British Blue x from Barber Farms, Claughton on Brock with Limousin x selling to £285 from D&K Haworth, Hambleton. Dairy bulls sold to £260 for Holstein Friesian from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with other nice rearers generally to £100 to £140, with smaller sorts £30 to £60. Heifer calves sold to £450 for a British Blue x from RT Halhead, Cockerham with others at £435 from AW&AM Park & Son, Ellel and £425 from JP&C Robson, Garstang. Store Cattle The weekly sale of store cattle saw numbers over 300, with 315 forward with buyers from all corners of the UK present. More weathered cattle forward than seen in previous weeks. Top of the leaderboard today was JS Clark & Sons, Catforth with a well grown Aberdeen Angus steer at £1680, not far behind was JD & CM Bracken, Garstang at £1660 for a pair of Charolais steers. Also at £1660 was H Birkett & Son, Overton with Aberdeen Angus steers. A pen full of well farmed British Blue steers from P Lawrenson & Son, Brindle saw a final bid of £1650. MJ Shepherd, Carnforth with Hereford steers at £1640, R & E Ladds, Scalthwaterigg saw his ring full of Simmental steers to £1460. Dairy bred steers to £1580 for Fleckviehs from JS Clark & Son, Catforth. Half a dozen well done to Montbeliarde to £1440 from DN Davies, Garstang with Friesians to £1180 from regular Lancaster supporters EE Thornton & Son, Heaton with Oxcliffe. Same story with the store heifers a few more showing signs of the recent wet conditions. Tim Robinson, Milnthorpe saw his run of Aberdeen Angus heifers top at £1540, with other Aberdeen Angus from the same home at £1460. Charolais heifers from JD & GM Bracken, Garstang at £1440. Beef cows sold to 199.5p/kg on two occasions for a Limousin x from T&S Blades, Arkholme and a Simmental x from T&M Halhead, Priest Hutton. Other beef cows were generally 160p/kg to 180p/kg, for an entry of predominately feeding type cows. Top grossing being a Simmental x from T&M Halhead, Priest Hutton achieving £1442. Heavy well fleshed dairy cows were in keen demand selling to 199.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from J&G Thornley Ltd, Kirkham who sold others at 189.5p/kg, with others regularly 165p/kg to 178p/kg. A large entry of medium parlour cows were achieving 148p/kg to 160p/kg, with the smaller and leaner cows 110p/kg to 140p/kg and several very light weight cows at realisation. Top grossing dairy cow achieved £1507 from Lawsons Dairy, Cockerham with endless heavy dairy cows exceeding £1100.
