Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Prime Lambs, Cast Sheep & Store Lambs, Monday 9th December 2024.

Prime Lambs

A wintery weekend results in a weathered show, however demand remains strong with an overall average of 300p/kg.

Beltex lambs from KA Purtill, Wigan sold to 355p/kg with the same home selling a lighter weight lambs to 346p/kg. Heavier Texels sold to 337p/kg again from the same good farming. M&S Purtill, Wigan sold the lightest lambs of the day to 333p/kg for a Beltex, while a slightly heavier Texel from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof achieved 332p/kg. Texels topped at £166 from J Burr, Quernmore. Others sold to the same money for a pair from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof. A pair of continentals sold to £165 from KA Purtill, Wigan. A few less about today, with trade very similar on the week. Texel ewes topped at £152 for a pair from TR Gorst, Bay Horse with other Texels from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof at £157. Mule ewes topped at £134 from J Burr, Quernmore with others from the same good home at £128. A consignment of Cheviots from TR Gorst, Bay Horse topped at £136. All ewes today averaged £128.

Store Lambs

The fortnightly sale of store lambs saw 105 through the ring, with a pleasing average of £93 considering the sale consisted of some vendors end of season runs. Texel topped the day at £111 from regular vendor J Gardner, Bay Horse. Other Texels achieved £103 from S&E Airey, Lancaster who also sold Suffolks to £99, with others at £95 from S Dickinson, Ellel.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Prime Lambs & Cast Sheep, Tuesday 10th December 2024. Prime Lambs

Jump in trade for strength and quality, Well fed sheep and better types see very strong return, while middle of the road sheep stand on from the previous week.

The usual up and down show of sheep at Junction 36, saw an increase in attention for the fitter end of lambs. The day topped at £205 for a heavy Texel from Messrs Woof, the same home had another at £204.

The top ppk of the day was 413p/kg, again for a Texel this time from AW&D Brown which weighted 49kg, with the same home selling a pair of 44kg lambs to £150. Demand for sheep continue to grow and the ever-busy ring side here is evidence of that.

Cast Sheep

A larger entry of ewes today, that could be described as a harvest of the hills, with a massive proportion of ewes being horned or hill bred.

Heavy ewes were good to sell reaching £185 for Texels from E Dodgson, Kendal with all good meated heavies £165 or more. Mules sold to £144 from Myerscough College, with the best of these top side of £130. Horned ewes sold to £120 for Scotch, £118 for Rough Fells and £99 for Swaledales, with only the leanest end available at less than £70.

Calves

70 rearing calves forward today, featuring the Christmas Show for calves under 56 days. The sale peaked at £730 for a British Blue bull just out of age for the show from JB Morley, Great Asby. Next at £600 was the pre-sale show champion from DR &C Galbraith, Grayrigg this 55 day old British Blue bull went home with the judge. JW&TE Sharp, Lyth enjoyed their days trading selling 6 week old British Blue bulls to £570, with todays reserve champion from R&J Dodgson, Natland closely behind at £560. Messrs Gibson & Berry, Endmoor had a 6 week old Charolais to £530, £500 and £480, with other Charolais at the same age to £520 from Messrs Sowerby, Appleby. The youngest of the bulls to £500 came from HJ Robinson, Preston Patrick with this British Blue just 30 days old. Native sired bull sold to £410 for the 1st prize Aberdeen Angus from DR&C Galbraith, Grayrigg, with Dairy breds to £370 for

Black and Whites from JB Morley, Appleby. Heifer calves sold to £550 for British Blues from JB Morley, Appleby with this homes good days trading continuing with others at £520 and £510. Messrs Sowerby made the trip from Appleby with their Charolais’ selling away at £530, £500, and £480. Heifers in eligible age for show sold to £480 for the 2nd prize continental (British Blue) from DR&C Galbraith, Grayrigg with the first prize again a British Blue to £440 from A Pickthall, New Hutton. £430 was paid for the 3rd prize, this British Blue at 5 weeks old came from JW&TE Sharp, Lyth. A full row of weanlings and stirks for the final sale of the year, saw 6 month old Limousin cross steers sell to £870 from M&C Greenwood, who sold a pen full of five month old Charolais cross heifers at £830. Nicely reared Simmental cross steers from JA Law, Carnforth sold to £820 who also sold heifers at £700. Younger steers sold to £620 for a four month old Aberdeen Angus cross, with heifers to £580 for a Simmental cross. Vendors are encouraged to pre enter weanlings and stirks for this popular sale, which continues to attract new customers.

Store Cattle

Christmas comes early for vendors at Junction 36. Store cattle trade continues to soar going into the festive period, with no sign of anything less as we approach the new year.

Aberdeen Angus bullocks sold to £1800 from BJ Bowness, Kendal. Limousin bullocks hit £1700 from A Peacock, Kendal at nineteen month old. J Twigge, Lindale sold a pair of Aberdeen Angus bullocks to £1690, while a very smart British Blue heifer fetched the same money this time from RT Gorst, Killington. A small offering of breeding cattle topped at £2850 for a British Blue cow with an Aberdeen Angus calf at foot from E Jackson, Out Rawcliffe.

OTM Cattle

Another large entry of cull cows forward at this ever increasing popular sale. All cows today sold to a market average of 176p/kg, with a large proportion being dairy cows sold ahead of the Christmas break. Beef cows sold to a top price of 234p/kg for a Beef Shorthorn from J&E Lancaster, Ulverston with others regularly 210p/kg-225p/kg, feeding type cows were 185-205p/kg. Top grossing beef cow was a Limousin from P Cummings, Burton in Kendal totalling £1714.

Best of the dairy cows sold to 214p/kg for a Fleckvieh from Messrs Sowerby, Appleby with other heavier better end dairy cows 180p/kg-205p/kg, mediums 165p/kg-178p/kg with leaner harder worked cows less and some at realisation.

Top grossing dairy cow was a Holstein Friesian again from Messrs Sowerby grossing £1627. All stock bulls sold to 189p/kg for a Belted Galloway from R Gibson & Son, Kendal and £1929 for a Hereford from Kinglands Farm, Crosscrake. Prime bulls sold to 279p/kg and £2437 for a Limousin from T Atkinson, Ulverston. OTM steers sold to 244p/kg and £1489 for a British Blue cross from JW Robinson & Son, Farleton.

116 Calves forward today at Lancaster for the annual Christmas show. Trade and atmosphere was buzzing with all goods sold to their full potential.

The sale featured a show for calves under 56 days of age and the results were as follows:

Limousins sold to £500 for a one month old from WN&D Smith, Cockerham with Aberdeen Angus to £495 from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale. Black and Whites reached £190 from J Bargh & Son, Heaton.

Rearing heifers sold to £480 for a British Blue from Lancaster regulars JP&C Robson, Brock with Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale just behind at £450, again for a British Blues. Other British Blues sold to £425 from RT Halhead, Cockerham, £415 Pickervance Farms, Kirkham and £400 for the days reserve champion (under 56 days) from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. Aberdeen Angus heifers reached £430 from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyredale and Charolais sold to £420 for JM&MH France, Littledale.

A feature of todays sale was the annual prize show for pairs, competing for the Tom Owen memorial trophy. Thanks must go to our sponsors and todays judge Mr David Scott, Morpeth.

The champion rosette was awarded to a pair of Limousin cross steers from DE&SM Moorhouse, Natland which later sold to a sale topping price of £2500 purchased by RT Owen. Away from the show steers sold to a top price of £2080 on two occasions for Limousin cross from Pilling Hall, Pilling and British Blue cross from J Lamb, Glasson. Other steers to break the £2000 barrier were a ring full of British Blue cross from M Shepherd, Pilling. Native sired steers sold to a top price of £1980 for a pair of Aberdeen Angus cross from Pilling Hall, Pilling. Well grown steers were regularly £1700 to £1950, To include the top price diary bred steers at £1820 for a Fleckvieh from MJ Waller, Lupton and black and whites to £1750 from EE Thornton & Sons, Morecambe. All steers forward today averaged £1631.

The concluding sale of cows for 2024 saw an overall marker average of 199.55p/kg and £1261 per head. Beef cows sold to a top price of 274.5p/kg for a Limousin from RH&C Ayrton, Abbeystead, with Herefords to 264.5p/kg from DH&M Kellett & Sons, Thurnham. Others beef cows were 220p/kg to 240p/kg and feeding types 190p/kg to 202p/kg.

Top grossing beef cow was another Limousin from the RH&C Ayrton, Abbeystead achieving £2154. Heavy well fleshed dairy cows sold to 254p/kg for a Montbeliard from WR&CM Lawrenson, Winmarleigh, with others generally 195p/kg to 210p/kg. Better parlour types 180p/kg to 195p/kg, with leaner sorts 150p/kg to 170p/kg. Top grossing dairy cow was a Montbeliarde again from WR&CM Lawrence totalling £1499, with black and whites to £1478 from PW&JM Norris & Son, Hornby. Cull stock bulls sold to 254p/kg for a Luing from RM&PM Simpson, Windermere grossing £2000 from Barlow Bros, Crossthwaite.

OTM beef heifers sold to 289p/kg for a Parthenaise cross from MA Barnes, Whinfell with Aberdeen Angus cross selling to £1940 from J Oddie, Balderstone. Diary heifers sold to 279.5p/kg and £1732 for a Fleckvieh from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green. Black and whites sold to 259.5p/kg and £1458 from AB&J Parkinson & Son, Out Rawcliffe.

OTM steers sold to 304.5p/kg for Aberdeen Angus cross from O Butler, Kirkham who sold other at 299p/kg, and 294.5p/kg. Top grossing was a Limousin from RG&LR Holmes, Warton totalling £2023.
