Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs, Prime Hoggs, Cast Sheep & Sheep with Lambs at Foot, Monday 1oth June 2024.

Prime Lambs

Spring lambs seeing a little resistance in trade on the week, with may outlets concentrating on ewes and hoggs, for the upcoming festival. 412 lambs sold to a top of £190 for a super Beltex cross lamb from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Suffolks sold to £186 from RC Billington & Son, Claughton on Brock. Texels sold twice to £182 from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe and KA Purtill, Wigan. Best bred lambs sold to 435p/kg from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe, with others to 428p/kg for Texels from KA Purtill, Wigan. The best bred lambs were regularly 400p/kg to 410p/kg, with first cross Mule types, full of meat regularly selling 375p/kg to 385p/kg.

150 hoggs were forward, with once again well meated and fed hoggs meeting eager bidding, with leaner types to realisation. Texels sold to £172 from AG Butler, Hambleton and Beltexs sold to £160 from T&E Burrow, Slyne. Horned hoggs sold to £148 from S Bosworth, Burnley with Mules to £133 from A&L Huddleston, Wray and Swaledales to £130 from KM&KJ Curwen, Abbeystead.

170 ewes were forward selling to an overall averaged of £149.15. Texels sold to £200 from DR&BE Rolfe, Scorton and a pen of Beltex to £195 from M Coxhead, Little Hool. A pen of first cross Texel ewes sold to £190 from A&E

Clarkson, Thurnham. Mules sold to £182 from H Birkett & Son, Overton. 73 Mule ewes were forward averaging £151. Horned ewes sold to £141 for Lonks from S Bosworth, Burnley with Cheviots to £138 from KA Purtill, Wigan and Dalesbreds £122 from WI&A Atkinson, Bleasdale.

Sheep with Lambs at Foot

The closing sale of ewes and lambs attracted a busy ringside of buyers, ensuring all types sold to a flying trade. Aged Cheviot ewes with Texel twin lambs from SE&J Gorst, Littledale sold to £268, with other pens to £262.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Pigs, Sheep with Lambs at Foot, Prime Lambs, Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep, Tuesday 11th June 2024.

Pigs

A fast trade for prime pigs with best gilts selling to £245 and 250p/kg from JM Navesey, with other gilts and hoggs regularly £195 to £225 (190p/kg-205p/kg). Lighter weight prime pigs sold to £200 and 250p/kg. Coloured boars sold to £185 and gilts £175. A single cull sow sold at £122 (49p/kg).

Bidders galore with Saddleback store hoggs and gilts selling to £92, with others at £72. Gloucestershire old spot weaner gilts sold to £65, with younger weaners £50 and £42.

Prime Lambs

705 spring lambs were forward, which sold to an overall average of 394p/kg and £168.50 per head. Heavy lambs were once again a good trade, topping at £213 for Texels from DE&SM Moorhouse, Natland with Charollais to £209 from RJ Stott, Stainton and Suffolks to £209 from TA&JA Dixon, Selside. Medium weight lambs would be the sharpest trade of the day, with these regularly selling over 400p/kg. Texel cross Dorset lambs weighing 44kg from S Proctor, Selside sold to £187, with Beltex cross to the same price from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe.

510 hoggs were forward, with vendors awarded for well fed hoggs. Beltexs sold to £208 from A Thompson, Carnforth with Charollais’s to £202 from SH&LE Birkett, Nether Kellet and Texels to £192 from FI&ME Little, Barrows Green. Many pens of continent heavy hoggs were £170 to £200. Hill bred hoggs saw Herdwicks sell to £174 from M&YS Barker, Halton with Mules to £170 from RJ&OB Simpson, Longsleddale. Cheviots sold to £164

from SH&LE Birkett, Nether Kellet. A ring full of Cheviot hoggs from GM&A Jackson, Little Eccleston sold to 400p/kg or £156, with pens of Swaledales to £148 from M&YS Barker, Halton.

A larger number of 719 cast sheep were forward, selling to an overall average of £122, with a large proportion of the sale being leaner hill ewes. Best pure ewes sold to £270 for Texels, with other mediums £190 to £250 and the smaller better end £150 to £180.

First cross ewes sold to £198 for Texel cross, £180 for Suffolk cross and £175 for Charollais cross. Other better end ewes were regularly £170 to £190, with mediums £150 to £170. Mules sold to £176, with heavies £155 to £170, meated mediums £140 to £155 and lighter weights £100 to £135. Pure hill ewes sold to £158 for Cheviots, £140 Rough Fells, £130 Swaledales, £126 Gritstone and £126 for Herdwicks. Medium hill ewes were £85 to £100, with smaller and leaner sorts £55 to £70.

A consignment of goats sold to £134, with others £128, £124 and £120.

Cull rams sold to £180 for medium Continentals with others £160 to £175, with the smaller and leaner end £110 to £150. Hill rams sold to £144 for Cheviots, with medium horned rams £100 to £115.

A bigger show of sheep with lambs, with 250 lives forward. Aged Texel ewes sucking Texel twin lambs sold to £360 from B Holland, Lowgill. Other Texel ewes sold to £340 from JM&NJ Strickland, Whinfell who sold tremendous singles to £330. Mule shearlings sucking Texel twins sold to £275 from JM&NJ Strickland, Whinfell with Cheviot ewes sucking single lambs sold to £185 from Kirkby & Longworth, Kentmere.

Calves

The fortnightly sale of calves and stirks was put before an increased ring side of buyers. Rearers were a flying trade, with these topping at £500 for a British Blue bull from DW&EA Cottam, New Hutton. A month old British Blue sold at £475 from HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick. Aberdeen Angus sold to £450 from W&S Airey, Whittington and month old Limousins sold to £445 from R&JE Wharton & Son, Appleby. A few dairy bulls were forward, which sold to £70 and £65 for fortnight olds.

Rearing heifers sold to £450 from SW Atkinson & Son, Kendal for a Limousin, with British Blues at £415 from DW&EA Cottam, New Hutton.

Store Cattle

A seasonal show of store cattle were forward, with new purchasers around the ring ensuring a fast trade was achieved for all sold. Limousin bullocks at 16 months sold to £1430 from J Moorhouse & S Richardson, Broughton Field. Other Limousins sold to £1380 from JM Haddow, Hincaster. The strongest bullocks were regularly £1300 plus. Yearling bullocks saw Limousins sell to £1320 from G&C Rylands, Underbarrow with Charolais’s to the same price from AW&AM Clarke, Windermere. Nice bred yearling bullocks were regularly £1100 to £1200.

Aberdeen Angus heifers sold to a top of £1280 from Norbreck Genetics, Cockerham. British Blues sold to the same price from FW Park, Windermere. A ring full of yearling Limousins sold to £1240 from JB Airey, New Hutton. Nice grazing heifers were regularly either side of the £1000 mark.

More bulls were forward today with all selling to there full value. Limousins sold to £1220 from GB&EA Metcalfe & Son, Mansergh, who sold other pens of young bulls to £1030.

Breeding Cattle

The annual show and sale of breeding cattle was kindly sponsored by WCF Fuels, MB Nutrition, Farmers Guardian, City & Guilds, the Milking Parlour and Campbell, Crossley and Davis. The judging was in the capable hands of Richard and Carole Benson. A small but quality show of breeding bulls attracted plenty of interest ensuring all were sold. Charolais bulls sold to £4800 from JE Gaunt, Huddersfield with Limousin bulls selling to £4200 from C Schofield, Manchester. Cows / heifers and calves attracted plenty of interest from a packed ringside of buyers. A home bred Limousin heifer with Limousin calf sold to £3450 from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston, who also sold other outfits to £3400. A pure Limousin second calver with pure Limousin heifer calf from LM Staley, Kirkby Stephen sold to £3200. Saler heifers with a Limousin bull calf from JE&DJ Hutchingson, Cautley sold at £3000. The run of home bred Limousin heifers with Limousin calves from EJ Hodgson & Son, Lambrigg saw his best sell twice to £2800. British Blue cows with Limousin calves sold to £2500 from JA&CA Gibson, Selside.

The next sale of beef breeding is on the 11th July, with plenty of buyers interest expected.

A quality entry of 52 cull cows sold to a market average of 185p/kg, with half the entry being dairy bred cows. Best beef cows sold to 221.5p/kg for Blonde cross from PJ&ES Rogerson, Appleby, with other heavier end continentals 205p/kg to 220p/kg and mediums 185p/kg to 200p/kg. Top grossing being a Hereford cross from RJ&J Gardner, Kendal at £1841. Closely followed by a Blonde at £1834 from PJ&ES Rogerson, Appleby. Dairy cows sold to 197.5p/kg for a British Friesian from RJ&ML Lowery, Holker. Other mediums were 175p/kg to 190p/kg, with leaner parlour types 150p/kg to 170p/kg. Top grossing being another British Friesian from RJ&ML Lowery, Holker totalling £1398.

A single OTM Holstein Friesian heifers sold to 199.5p/kg and £1228 from C&AJ Woodhouse, Millom.

Cull stock bulls sold to 187.5p/kg and £1888 for a Hereford from JL Bird, Flookburgh with Stabiliser to 177.5p/kg and £1691 from M Allen, Carnforth.

Dairy Cattle

A second calved Ayrshire sold to £1380, with more required to fulfil buyers requirements. Already entered for next fortnights sale are five new calved cows.

Calves & Weanlings

The weekly sale of calves at Lancaster were put before a packed ringside of buyers, with a fast trade seen from start to finish. Topping the sale at £690 was a Charolais bull from regular supporters J&G Thornley, Kirkham, who also sold an Aberdeen Angus at £580. Slightly younger sorts sold to £470 for a British Blue, £445 for a Limousin and £440 for a Hereford. A handful of diary bulls were forward, which sold to £180 for a Friesian from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale, with others at £145 from D&K Howarth, Hambleton.

A handful of bull stirks were forward sold to £550 for Hereford form FW Rhodes, Ellel and £520 for Aberdeen Angus from RE&P Miller, Barnacre. A ring full of four Aberdeen Angus steers sold to £605 from J&M Coar & Son, Waddington. Heifer calves sold equally as well, with these reaching £500 for a British Blue from JP&C Robson, Garstang and a trio of Aberdeen Angus heifers at £420 from A Shepherd, Preesall. Month old heifer calves reached £405 for a Charolais from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. Heifer stirks achieved £565 for a British Blue from FW Rhodes, Ellel, with this home also selling heifers at £495.

Store Cattle

An entry of predominately stronger store cattle saw Charolais steers to £1800, Limousins £1790 and Aberdeen Angus £1710. Other stronger steers were generally £1560 to £1680. Longer keep feeding type steers were £1280 to £1450.

Heifers sold to £1580 for Aberdeen Angus cross, with others at £1560. Both Charolais and Simmentals sold to £1500. Other better end mediums sorts were £1300 to £1450, longer keep feeding types were £1200 to £1250.

OTM Cattle

Another pleasing entry of cast cattle were forward, averaging 178p/kg. The best beef cows sold to 227.5p/kg and £1708, with diary cows to 207p/kg and £1741. Medium cows of all breeds were regularly 170p/kg to 190p/kg, with lighter and leaner 140p/kg to 160p/kg. Plenty of cows were regularly £1180 to £1300.

OTM beef heifers sold to 269.5p/kg and £1744, with OTM dairy heifers to 237.5p/kg and £1592. Other OTM heifers were regularly 210p/kg to 220p/kg and £1100 to £1350.

OTM steers sold to 249.5p/kg and £1427.
