Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Prime Lambs, Cast Sheep & Store Lambs, Monday 11th November 2024.
Prime Lambs
Well meated fed lambs are now coming forward in greater numbers, selling to a top of 351p/kg from PJ&ES Rogerson, Appleby with others regularly 320p/kg to 325p/kg. The best first cross lambs were 290p/kg to 310p/kg, with others directly of grass and perhaps lacking the final finish 270p/kg to 290p/kg. Hill bred lambs sold to 293p/kg for Cheviots from KM&KJ Curwen, Abbeystead, with Mules to 268p/kg from TA&JA Dixon, Selside and Swaledales to 264p/kg for a ring full from KM&KJ Curwen, Abbeystead. TR Prickett, Hutton Roof topped todays sale with Texel cross lambs at £166. Endless pens of well bred and well finished heavy weights were £145 to £160. The best standard wights were £124 to £136, with lighter weight lambs to £113. Heavy weight Cheviots sold to £143 from AG Butler, Hambleton, Mules to £127.50 from TA&JA Dixon, Selside and Swaledales to £117.50 from KM&KJ Curwen, Abbeystead. To maximise returns vendors are strongly encouraged to feed their lambs, to meet buyers requirements. Next week all prime lambs will require belly clipping, as this is now required by the food standards agency.

As ewe numbers tighten nationally, trade remains buoyant with all classes and types easily sold each week at Lancaster. The strongest cross breds sold to £177 from KA Purtill, Wigan with other better medium types £128 to £145, and smaller and leaner continental cross ewes £88 to £110. Mules sold to £158 from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth with a ring full of heavy weight Mules selling to £130 from C&B Lowther, Over Wyresdale. Stronger Mules were £115 to £128, with mediums £96 to £110. Stronger hill ewes sold to £82 for Swaledales, with lighter weight leaner sorts £38 to £50.

Store Lambs
The fortnightly sale of store lambs saw an abundance of buyers ring side all keen to fill trailers. The sale topped at £115 for Texel cross from I Richardson, Catford with Suffolks to £111 from M&L Coooper, Preesall and other Texels £110 from DM Eames, Abbeystead. An entry of predominantly longer keep lambs sold to a keen interest, with an overall sale average of £91. More lambs are required at the next sale on Monday 25th November, please advise the office of entries.

Pigs
84 prime and store pigs were forward today, trade for prime pigs held its own but weaners and stores taking a lift on last sale. It was regular supporters JM Navesey and J&JR Stott led the way at £220 with 99kg hogs and 83kg gilts respectively. Other gilts sold to £210 for a trio from CR Dickinson, with a further six at £205 from this home. Boars sold to £158 from RM&N Wainwright, while cull sows reached £128 from RB Jackson. Stores sold to £72 for a trio from J McEwan, while ten cracking weaners from HA Sawrey came to the same price.
Prime Lambs
J36 avoids the downward trend and sees a high-flying trade every bit as good as the previous week! Heavy lambs topped at £192 for a 64kg Texel from Messrs Rogerson, Appleby. Big Suffolks hit the £175 mark for a pen of eight weighing 57kg from Messrs Woodburn, Ulverston. The same good home had Texels to £184. Good lighter lambs were also a strong trade with a pen of seven 39kg Texels selling to £145 from WS Burrow, Silverdale. A nice well fed run of lambs from J Twigge, Lindale topped at £161 for 46kg Texels making them 350ppk on the day. Todays sale averaged 300p/kg. The day also saw an increase in numbers with a healthy number of buyers in support. More sheep are required going forward with both TRADE AND WEIGHT pleasing sellers. Calves
Calves held firm with trade doing well for the time of year. British Blue calves continue to take top spot selling to £520 and £500 from A Pickthall, New Hutton, 0This run of British Blue bulls averaged £472 at five weeks. JW&TE Sharp, Lyth also had a good days trading selling British Blue bulls to £485, £475 and £470 at 3 to 4 weeks old. Limousin bulls sold to £365 from Langley Park, Millom and natives sold to £240 for an Aberdeen Angus at 2 ½ weeks old from RG&AJ Clark, Endmoor. Dairy bulls sold to £105 for a Dairy Shorthorn from Messrs Robinson, Old Hutton. Heifer calves were easy to place selling to £410 for a British Blue at 2 days short of one month old from DR&C Galbraith, Grayrigg. JW&TE Sharp, Lyth also sold a British Blue at five weeks to £400, with Limousin to the same price from Langley Park. Native sired calves sold to £220 for a one-month-old Angus from A Pickthall, New Hutton.
Stirks
The sale comprised of 65 predominantly sale day entry stirks sold to an animated trade. A pair of six month old Aberdeen Angus cross steers achieving £680, with Aberdeen Angus heifers to £850. Younger beef bred steers were regularly £600 to £750 and heifers £640 to £680. Several bull stirks sold to £760 for three month old Charolais cross with others at £720. Ten week old Limousin cross sold to £680. Dairy bred steers sold to £710 for a six month old black and white with younger recently weaned dairy bulls £300 to £350.

Store Cattle
Store cattle trade shifts to a new gear. A big lift experienced on the fortnight with all types visibly dearer, matched with a stronger show of cattle. Twenty one month old Aberdeen Angus bullocks sold to £1780 from Messrs Todd, Sedbergh. Messrs Bowness matched that trade with a single Aberdeen Angus bullock, at the same price.
British Blue bullocks hit £1760 at just nineteen months old from RT Gorst, Killington. Messrs Procter, Kirkby Stephen sold a Charolais bullock to £1700. Heifers sold to £1590 for two lots of British Blue pairs from two different home, firstly from Messrs Nelson, Stainton at seventeen months old and then from Messrs Knowles, Selside. OTM Cattle
Another large entry of 80 cull cows were forward, which saw an animated ring side of buyers competing for all classes and types, with all sold average 180p/kg and £1183. The best beef cows sold to 250p/kg for a Blonde cross from PJ&ES Rogerson, Appleby with others regularly 210p/kg to 225p/kg. Beef cows suitable for feeding were 185p/kg to 205p/kg. Top grossing was another Blonde from PJ&ES Rogerson, Appleby achieving £2153 with a further 12 beef cows £1500 to £1800. Heavy well fleshed dairy cows sold to 205p/kg for a black and white from MH&SJ Morris, Allithwaite with others regularly 180p/kg to 195p/kg, medium parlour types 165p/kg to 180p/kg with only the lightest and leanest less. Top grossing black and white was from MW&M Hodgson, Cartmel totalling £1456, with a further twelve dairy cows £1200 to £1350.
An abundance of stock bulls forward sold to 245p/kg for a Simmental from LA&M Lambert, Lupton with Limousin to 235p/kg and other hard worked bulls 175p/kg to 195p/kg. Top grossing being a Limousin from PW Clarke, Crosthwaite achieving £2204 with another at £2180 from FW Park, Windermere.
OTM heifer sold to 240p/kg and £1514, with OTM steers 220p/kg and £1584. Vendors are strongly encouraged to pre enter all classes of stock with the auctioneers, to assist with cataloguing and canvassing. A large entry is required next fortnight, with our sale including a special section for late born and hill bred suckler calves.

J36 held its annual show & sale of Suffolk females on Thursday night, which proved a great success once again. A vibrant ringside throughout ensured for an excellent clearance rate, that left vendors in good spirits.

In lamb gimmer shealings hit 1200gns sold by Messrs Batty of Heversham. This was bought by Messrs Procter of Villa Farm.
Others sold to 900gns twice from Aiden Mitchell of Grassknop Farm.
In lamb ewes also topped at 900gns from Messrs Owen of Neuadd Wen, with the same home selling two other ewes to 700gns.

Calves & Weanlings
A larger entry of 82 calves were forward today, with vendors taking advantage of the trade seen weekly here at Lancaster.
Bull calves were a flyer, selling to £555 for a British Blue from SH&M Batty & Son, Quernmore. Next at £540 was a British Blue from regular supporter JP&C Robson, Brock who enjoyed their days trading here at Lancaster, selling another British Blue to £510. TC&M Kelsall, Chipping fetched a predominantly younger consignment of calves, with these reaching £400. Native bull calved reached £395 twice, both for Aberdeen Angus from the JP&C Robson, Brock with younger models at £350 from Throstle Nest, Pilling.
Dairy bulls of the scale, selling to £290 and £275 for a twenty day old Montbeliardes from GJ&G Billington, Garstang.
Heifer calves sold to £420 for a British Blue from TC&M Kelsall, Chipping with JP&C Robson, Brock at £385. Aberdeen Angus cross heifers reaching £365 from Wallbank Farms Ltd, Over Wyresdale with stronger heifers regularly reaching £300. Lots of younger heifers calves in today with these often £250 to £300.
Weaned calves sold to £750 for a British Blue bull from TD&A Garnder, Great Eccleston with a pair of Aberdeen Angus cross from FW Rhodes & Son, Ellel next at £595 and £590. Weaned heifers reached £505 for a British Blue from AW&AM Park, Ellel with Aberdeen agnus from this home at £480 twice.

Store cattle off the clock today with an entry of over 200, selling to an average in excess of £1500.
Claiming top spot today was EJ&PE Burrow, Storth selling their Charolais heifer to £2050. Other notable prices amongst the heights came from JD&GM Bracken, Garstang achieving £1810. WR&CM Lawrenson, Winmarleigh sold Montbeliardes to £1800, with Limousins to £1760 from EJ Ward, Nether Kellet while a quartet of Aberdeen Angus from G Sagar & Son, Caton reached £1640.
Steers continue to sell above and beyond vendors expectations, today peaking at £1960 for a British Blue from HR&KA Hodgson, Barbon. OTM Cattle
The weekly sale of OTM cattle at Lancaster saw a few more about, as the word spreads of the flying Friday’s trade in the cast ring. An overall market average of 199.5p/kg, with this including some very lean cows.
Breaking the £2000 barrier was KM&KJ Curwen, Abbeystead with a Limousin cow at £2026.50 or 289.5p/kg. Other Limousin cows from EJ Ward, Nether Kellet achieved £1916. British Blue cows also from KM&KJ Curwen, Abbeystead were £1913. HR&KA Hodgson, Barbon hit top spot with pence per kilo with a Limousin cow at 299.5p/kg or £1892. Other beef bred cows sold to £1850 for a Simmental from PJ&ES Rogerson, Appleby. Friesian cows sold to £1773.92 or 214.5p/kg from PW&JM Norris, Hornby with other Friesians to £1681 or 217p/kg from EW&RM Towers, Hornby. Plenty of other Friesian cows were around the 200p/kg mark.
OTM heifers today saw WA Ward & Son, Slyne sell Friesians to £1476, with other Friesians heifers to 229.5p/kg from JK&BJ Birkett & Son, Morecombe. Beef bred heifers sold to 259.5p/kg for Limousins from EJ Ward & Sons, Nether Kellet who also had Simmental at the same price. Hereford heifers from MS&G Mason, Kirkby Lonsdale achieved 254p/kg.
Cast steers would be the trade of the day, topping at 294.5p/kg for a Charolais from EJ Ward & Sons, Carnforth who also had Limousins at 289.5p/kg. Other steers saw to many to mention around the 250p/kg to 260p/kg bracket.
Just a handful of cast bulls in today, topping at 239.5p/kg from WM&JE Shuttleworth, Barbon for a Limousin with other Limousin bulls to £1805 from B Heys, Liverpool.
More OTM cattle required at next week’s sale, as some buyers went home empty handed today.
