Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep. Sale of Store Lambs, Monday 11th December 2023. Prime Lambs Lancasters weekly prime sale saw 680 go through the ring, with 200 of them being hill or Mule bred, reflecting in the average of 254p/kg. Good meat is always best to sell with regulator Lancaster venders JM&MH France & Son, Littledale selling a heavy Texel to topping the market at £157. Other heavy weight Texels sold to £151 from W&A Cornall, Barnacre. P Lawrenson, Brindle had his usual terrific run of lambs to top of £144. TM Townley, Over Wyresdale filled the ring with heavy Suffolks to £144, with other from the same home at £134. Medium wight lambs saw Beltex cross to £132 from S Rossall, Over Wyresdale with others at £130 or 302p/kg from KA Purtill, Wigan. Others achieved 291p/kg from AG Butler, Hambleton. Horned lambs saw a ring full of Dalesbred from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton at £103, with lambs to £92 from S Bosworth, Burnley. Mule lambs sold to £116 from T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping. Store Lambs A smaller show of store lambs were forward, as many Lancaster vendors have come to the end of their lambs. A&L Huddleston, Wray consignment of lambs sold to £92 for smart Texels with Mules to £88 from the same good home. D&J Hay, Cockerham consignment of lambs saw Texels to £81 and £79. J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Pigs. Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep, Tuesday 12th December 2023. Pigs An additional sale of prime pigs saw a top price of £205 for a Pietrain cross boars from M Coxhead, Little Hool. Gilts sold to £200 from CR Dickinson, Thurnham who sold others at £190. Other heavy well bred pigs generally £175 to £190, with lighter weights selling to £150 from BR Harrison, Staveley. Prime Lambs A bumper entry of 2129 lambs were forward, with all selling to a similar trade. Grass fed and leaner lambs looked slightly reduced trade. Lighter lambs were a flying trade and many more could have been sold to the vendor’s advantage. Heavy lambs saw Charollais sell to £154 from EW&RJ Parkinson, Dunsop Bridge with Texels to £153 twice from TE JS CA Curruthers, Underbarrow and GC&G Taylor, Crook. Suffolk lambs saw a pen of fourteen sell to £152 from JE Read, Hutton Roof. Well meated export lambs were keenly bid for and generally sold at 270p/kg to 285p/kg or £118 to £120 a head. Hill lambs saw Cheviot Mules to £137 from S Crawford, Staveley, with Mules to £134 from EW&JR Parkinson, Dunsop Bridge. Pure Cheviot sold to £121 from GM Metcalfe, Underbarrow. Cast Sheep 694 cull ewes were forward, selling to an ever improving trade. Todays sale peaked at £144 for Texel cross ewes from J Woodburn & Partner, Ulverston and T Stephens, Kirkby Lonsdale. Others achieved £142 from J&O Galbraith, Endmoor and £140 from R&AC Harper, Grayrigg. Other stronger pure and first cross ewes were generally £115 to £135, medium meated £90 to £110 and smaller to leaner sorts £78 to £85. Mules sold to a top of £116 for a pen of ten from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston with Masham to £110 from JA Bennett, Longsleddale. Other stronger heavy Mules were £96 to £110, with mediums £85 to £92 and small meated ewes £72 to £80. Hill bred ewes sold to £110 for Lleyns from JM&MH Frace & Son, Littledale. Cheviots to £110 from Stockdale Farms, Sedbergh. Swaledales sold to £72 from GA Guy, Tebay. A large number of medium hill ewes sold to £64 for Dalesbreds from WI&AM Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale and Swaledales to £64 from AJ&L Birkett, Ambleside, who also sold Herdwicks at £51. The smallest leanest ewes were generally £35 to £45.


Cull rams sold to £140 on three occasion for Cheviot from J Angus, Eskdale, Texels from JG&B Escolme, Killington and C Harper, Docker. Other lighter weight rams were generally £85 to £100. Store Lambs A pleasing entry of 2100 store lambs were put before our ever increasing ring side of buyers at J36, with a fantastic averaged of £79 was achieved. A fabulous run of Beltex cross lambs from JD Dixon, Flookburgh sold to £135 with others from the same good home to £127. Texels sold to £119 from Holgate Caravans, Silverdale. Other good pens of Texels sold to £118 from PM&ST Entwistle, Abbeystead. 34 pens sold over the £100 mark. Well bred longer term Continental lambs were in the keenest interest for some time, with these regularly selling at £80 to £95. Mule lambs saw a top of £92 from JA&CA Gibson, Selside. A full ring full sold to £90 from RI Dixon, Selside. All Mules forward averaged £80.50. Hill lambs saw Cheviot sell to £83 from J Angus, Broughton with others at £81 from D&D Huddleston, Wray. Swaledales saw keen ring side of buyers, with the best pens selling to £79.50 from Messrs Hodgson, Rydal. Swaledale pens were regularly selling at £65 to £70, with 724 forward averaging £59. Herdwicks saw a top of £79 from Messrs Edmondson, Grate Langdale with other pens to £75.50 from J Angus, Broughton. The concluding sale of 2023 saw all vendors leave full of Christmas cheer, with prices exceeding expectations and many other local auction marts. Dairy Cattle R&K Jenkinson, Pilling sold new calved Holstein Friesian heifers to £1500 with others at £1480 for Fleckvieh cross. Calves & Weanlings Calves sold to a top of £555 for a ten week old Hereford cross from TE&M Kidd, Ellel who sold others at £520. Younger rearing calves sold to £245 for British Blue cross from C&J Smith, St Michaels. Three week sold Limousins sold to £200 from D&K Haworth, Hambleton with Aberdeen Angus cross achieved £170 from Cote Farm Partnership, Nether Kellet. Dairy bulls sold to £110 for a Holstein Friesian from AE&A Swale, Rishton. Heifer calves sold to £430 for a Hereford cross from TE&M Kidd, Ellel with ten week old Aberdeen Angus cross selling to £410 from AE&A Swale, Rishton. OTM Cattle 114 cull cows sold to a market average of 151p/kg, for an entry of predominately dairy cows. Of the few beef cows forward, a top price of 219.5p/kg or £1558 was achieved for a Bazadaise from BD&PM Gill & Son, Ingleton. Limousin cross sold to 199.5p/kg from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof and £1446 from JC Hodgson, Dent. Other beef cows were regularly 165p/kg to 180p/kg. Dairy cows sold to 177p/kg for a British Friesian from WT Whitaker & Son, Nether Kellet with Fleckvieh to 171p/kg from EW&R Towers, Hornby and Holstein Friesian sold to 169.5p/kg from WN&D Smith & Sons, Cockerham and WG&R Riley, Chorley. Medium dairy cows were regularly 140p/kg to 155p/kg, with leaner parlour sorts 120p/kg to 140p/kg, the very smallest and leanest were less. Top grossing dairy cow was a Holstein Friesian from R&E Ladds, Kendal achieving £1438. Other heavy well fleshed dairy cows were regularly £1100 to £1200. OTM beef heifers sold to 254p/kg for a British Blue cross from GB&EA Metcalfe & Son, Kirkby Lonsdale with Aberdeen Angus cross selling to £1453 from R&D Kellet, Cockerham. Dairy heifers sold to 234.5p/kg and £1364 from JM&HM France & Son, Littledale. Others were regularly 180p/kg to 200p/kg.
