Weekly Report and Newsletter - 16th February 2024 Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep. Monday 12th February 2024. Prime Hoggs The trade for prime hoggs at Lancaster goes up two gears, with all forward averaging 321p/kg. The sale topped of £168 twice for pens of Texels from J France, Pilling with Dutch Spotted to £167 from KP Dagger, Garstang. Beltexs saw the best sell to £162 from KA Purtill, Wigan. The best pence per kilo being 380p/kg for Beltexs from T&E Burrow, Slyne with Texels to 370p/kg from AG Butler, Hambleton. Pens of smart well bred hoggs were regularly 340p/kg to 360p/kg, with export types 330p/kg to 340p/kg. Heavy Mashams saw a top of £158 from T&D Wright, Wray with a ring full of Mules to £148 from S&J France, Over Wyresdale. Mules were regularly 290p/kg to 300p/kg. Cheviot hoggs sold to £141 or 322p/kg from P Prickett, Hutton Roof. Light weight hoggs were in keen demand with these full of meat regularly 320p/kg to 335p/kg. A pen of 38kg Dutch Spotted hoggs from KP Dagger sold to £131. Horned hoggs saw 36kg Rough Fells sell to £108 from LA Bradshaw, Stalmine who sold Herdwicks at 37kg to the same price. An abundance of stores and weaners saw the best weaners sell to £51 from TJ Hoodless, Armathwaite with the best younger weaners £25 to £30. Prime Hoggs A very strong trade was seen for all types and breeds of hoggs at Junction 36, an overall market averaged of 308p/kg was achieved, with well over half the sale being hill bred hogg. Heavy pure bred ewes sold to £216 for a Texel from A Brown, Carnforth with other heavier stronger ewes regularly £140 to £165. Cheviot Mules sold to £128 from NP&CE Buckley, Ings and North County Mule to £124 from J France, Pilling. Hill bred ewes sold to £118 for Cheviots from BR Harrison, Staveley and JE Atkinson, Ulverston. Herdwicks sold to £117, Swaledales to £97 and Rough Fells to £87. OTM Cattle Another large entry of cull cows sold to a market averaged of 170p/kg, with over half the entry being dairy cows. Beef cows sold to a top of 254p/kg for a young Limousin from CD&HL Mason, Caton. Other stronger end beef

cows were regularly 210p/kg to 230p/kg, with medium sorts keenly sort after for feeding at 180p/kg to 205p/kg. Top grossing beef cow was an Aberdeen Angus at £1680 from O Butler, Kirkham with others generally £1200 to £1420. Heavy well fleshed dairy cows sold to 241p/kg for a young Holstein Friesian cow from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe. Other well fleshed dairy cows were 185p/kg to 200p/kg, mediums 160p/kg to 180p/kg with cows direct out of the parlour 142p/kg to 165p/kg. Top grossing dairy cow was a Holstein Friesian from TL Baldwin & Son, Forton achieving £1579.
