Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Prime Hoggs & Cast Sheep, Monday 13th January 2025.

Prime Hoggs

No winter blues at NWA Lancaster, a sharp rise in trade saw an SQQ 352p/kg and an overall average of 350p/kg. The sale peaked at £190 for a pen of three Beltex cross hoggs from AG Butler, Hambleton, which sold early in the sale and set the tone for the rest of the day. Others sold at £180 for a ring full from JE Parkinson & Son, Quernmore, £179 from KA Purtill, Wigan, £179 from J Twigge, Lindale and £178 GM&A Jackson, Little Eccleston. Well finished hoggs were greatly appreciated by the buyers, with a prompt start and a fast trade seen all day. Well finished hoggs were regularly selling at £120 to £135 over weight. Hill bred hoggs are coming forward in greater numbers, selling to £161 for standard weight Cheviots from KM&KJ Curwen, Abbeystead with Mules to £150 from GM&A Jackson, Little Eccleston and lighter weight Swaledales to £113. Today’s sale peaked at 413p/kg for another pen of Beltex cross hoggs from AG Butler, Hambleton with others at 409p/kg, 407p/kg,405p/kg and regularly selling at 380p/kg plus. The best first cross lambs sold to 395p/kg from M&S Purtill, Wigan with other pens 360p/kg to 380p/kg, with standards nicely 340p/kg to 355p/kg. Hill bred lambs sold to 359p/kg for Cheviots from P Prickett, Hutton Roof with others at 358p/kg from KM&KJ Curwen, Abbeystead. Mules sold to 328p/kg and horned lambs to 308p/kg. Cast Ewes

Cull sheep experienced another rise in trade, spirited bidding for all sheep produced an overall market average of £166. Several pure and ¾ bred ewes forward today, sold to a top of £268 for a Beltex cross from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Texels sold to £242 from G Hargreaves, Scotford and R&DL Cornthwaite, Nateby, other mediums were regularly £205 to £220. First cross continental ewes sold to £206 from Bargh Contractors, Morecambe with other at £204 and £202, with best from CJ Metcalf, Ingleton achieving £200. Other better mediums were £170 to £195, with leaner sorts £130 to £160. Mashams sold to a top of £206 from WJ&EA Woodhouse, Nateby with North Country Mules to £204 from R&DL Cornthwaite, Nateby. Other strong heavy weight Mules were regularly £180 to £195, better end mediums were £140 to £170, with only the smaller sorts less. Pure hill ewes sold to £130 for Rough Fells from WJ&EA Woodhouse, Nateby, Dalesbred to £122 from DM Eames, Abbeystead, Cheviots £121 from JE Parkinson & Son, Quernmore and Swaledales £118 from RH&C Ayrton, Abbeystead. Just a handful of rams forward sold to £182 for Cheviots from RH&C Ayrton, Abbeystead with a large number of leaner hard worked continental £110 to £140. All classes and types of cull sheep are required every Monday to satisfy buyers requirements.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Pigs, Prime Hoggs & Cast Sheep, Tuesday 14th January 2025. Pigs

J36’s first pig sale of 2025 saw the trade increase on the previous year.

A cracker of a gilt from local finisher PK&R Woof, Stainton topped the days trading at £250 with a further three from this home at £220. Another J36 regular J Stott, Kingsland produced a trio of hogs to £220. The highest p/kg coming from the Whitehaven based A Preston, this home reaching 220p/kg or £220. Boars sold to £175 from CR Dickinson, Thurnham. Stores and weaners continued to generate interest here at J36. These reaching £100 for a pen of boars from R Ellison, Ulverston with the best of the weaners to £58 from S Whitley, Harrogate.

Prime Hoggs- FLYING TRADE

The take off continues at Junction 36 as prime hoggs hit the clouds once again, with demand showing no let up.

Texel sold to £198 from F&SA Edmondson, Ulverston.

Suffolks sold to £196 from F&SA Edmondson, Ulverston.

Beltex sold to £190 from A Thompson, Carnforth.

Charollais sold to £180 from S Crowe, Stainton.

Mules sold to £176 from WI&AM Atkinson, Bleasdale.

BFL sold to £171 from RI Dixon, Levens.

A particularly large amount of light weight hoggs about, were met with what can only be classed as a heavy weight trade. A pair of 36kg Texels from A Thompson, Carnforth hit 394.4p/kg. Even hill sheep saw the same treatment, as 30kg Herdwicks sold to 340p/kg this was for a pen of five from SW&A Hoggarth, Broughton in Furness. Handy weight hoggs saw endless bidding throughout. 44kg Texels from RC Morphet, Hornby totalled at £166 or 377.3p/kg. Three Blue Texels at the same weight made £1 less or 375p/kg. A pen of three Beltex from A Thompson, Carnforth weighed 46kg and totalled at £176 per head or 382.6p/kg. 48kg Texels went to £181 or 377.1p/kg from PJ&ES Rogerson, Appleby. The heavier end (in the 55kg to 60kg category) saw anywhere from 325p/kg to 330p/kg, for the most solid end. An SQQ average of 341p/kg was achieved, which saw trade a good bit up on the week, due to the number of hill bred and horned hoggs on offer today.

Cull sheep continue to sell to the recent high rates for all classes and types, with ten buyers ringside at Junction 36 eager to fill orders.

Best end continentals were regularly £220 to £250, with the strongest £260 to £290, topping at £300 for Texels from RK&R Woof, Stainton. Strongest cross bred ewes sold to £214 for Suffolk cross from E&A Thompson, New Hutton with others £200 to £210. Texel cross sold to £200 from R Harker & Son, Grayrigg. Mules continue to rise week on week, with a pen full of heavy weight North Country Mules from DS Harper, Lyth selling to £212, with other heavy North Country Mules regularly £170 to £200. Cheviot Mules sold to £198 from Kendal College, Kendal with others £170 to £190. Medium ewes were nicely £140 to £165, with smaller leaner sorts £110 to £130.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Fortnightly Sale of Store Hoggs, Thursday 16th January 2025.

Breeding Sheep

The opening sale of in lamb breeding sheep saw a packed ring side of local and travelled buyers in attendance, keen to secure additional and replacement stock. Today’s sale topped at £260 on two occasions for Mule shearlings and one crops carrying twins, due mid-March onwards. Others were regularly £225 to £250, with medium Mules scanned at 150% generally £200 to £222. Several pens of older sheep saw aged Mules scanned at 195% sell at £225, with sheep carrying triples to £220 and broken mouthed Mules £170.

The next sale of breeding sheep will take place on Saturday 25th January, to include 200 Mule ewes and shearling from several consignors. Store Hoggs

An increasing trade for store hoggs for the second week running at Junction 36, with an entry of 2000 head creating an overall average if £118.63. There was plenty of customers for all categories of hoggs. Medium term keep hoggs were probably the most sort after, with the overall average reflecting this.

Topping todays trade was eight quality Texel hoggs were courtesy of D Philips, Gatebeck making £151. There was a large proportion of continental Suffolks hoggs over £140. Mules topped at £140, with demand for the breed remaining high, this price was achieved by T Longton, Quernmore. The average for Mules was just shy of £120. Demand was also high for good hill hoggs. A special mention to Alan Lambert, Lupton who reached £125 for a pen of twelve quality Charmoise.

Calves & Weanlings

80 calves and weaned stirks forward today, saw trade up another gear for all goods with all calves sold today averaging £454. Rearers flew to a top of £640 for six week old British Blue bulls from Lancaster regulars JP&C Robson, Brock. Aberdeen Angus not far behind at £585 for the Barbers of Manor House, Brock. Aberdeen Angus cross were possibly the trade of the day with other bulls to £580 and £545 from I Richardson, Catforth & H&SD Cornthwaite, Garstang respectively. Rearing Heifers topped at £541 for an Aberdeen Angus cross from I Richardson, Catforth with others from this good farming at £485 x2. JE&J Pye, Quernmore treated us to a very sweet pen of Aberdeen Angus heifers selling to £475 and £465. British Blues sold to £340 for a young sweet pair from JP&C Robson, Brock with month old Limousins to £315 from MH&AR Robinson, Holmescale. Weaned stirks sold to £840 for a trio of Hereford cross steers from D&J Hay, Cockerham with bulls to £750 for British Blues from AW&AM Park, Ellel. Slightly older black and white bulls from TD&A Gardner, Great Eccleston sold to £740. Heifer stirks had to be seen to be believed, with A Shepherd, Preesall selling Aberdeen Angus cross to £725 and £715 x2, at just five months old.

Store cattle prices continue to flourish here at Lancaster’s weekly sale, with bullocks selling to average a genuine £1822.02 and an overall market average of £1702.28, for a predominantly dairy bred show.

No less than 34 of the 200 stores on show sold over £2000, however it was Lancaster stalwart A&E Clarkson, Thurnham who came out on top with his British Blue bullock reaching the day’s top price of £2350. Other bullocks saw R&DM Rossall, Pilling sell pair of British Blues to £2320 and Aberdeen Angus cross to £2300, with Charolais also to £2300 from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse. Limousins sold to £2280 from DE&SM Moorhouse, Natland, while top price dairy bullock was an Ayrshire at £1920. Heifers sold to a top of £1970 for a British Blue cross from JD&GM Bracken, Garstang with TJ Robinson, Milnthorpe producing two close behind, with Hereford at £1960 and Aberdeen Angus cross at £1900. Also at £1900 was a trio of British Blue cross from the Garsdale based TG&B Todd, with a further twenty heifers selling over £1800.

OTM Cattle

Lancaster’s popular weekly sale of OTM cattle saw new vendors joining the party and being well satisfied with the trade. Just short of 100 cattle went through the bottom ring today, with all classes a sharper trade and overall average of 207.5p/kg. Cast steers today would see a top grossing price of £2222.81 for an Aberdeen Angus from O Butler, Esprick who sold three other Angus OTM steers over £2000 or 324.5p/kg. Regular vendors EE Thornton & Son, Heaton saw their Friesian cast steers sell to £1773 or 299.5p/kg.

OTM heifers saw local vendors A&FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel over £2000 (x2) or 304.5p/kg for a Hereford and Montbeliarde, with Friesian OTM Heifers to £1560.55 or 264.5p/kg from G&ME Woodhouse, Ellel.

No let up in trade on the OTM cow front, with GJ&GB Billington, Garstang topping at £2146.07 for a Charolais cow. Other better-bred cows sold to £1774.06 from G Metcalfe & Son, Gressingham for an Aberdeen Angus. Friesian cows from PW&JM Norris & Sons, Hornby sold to £1937, with other Friesian cows sold to £1823 from A Grimshaw, Bolton. Fleckvieh bred cows sold to £1798 or 239.5p/kg from B&AC Barnes, Middleton.

Just a handful of cast bulls in today sold to £1588.14 or 264.5p/kg for a Hereford from MS&G Mason, Kirkby Lonsdale.

Many more OTM cattle can be handled on a Friday morning at Lancaster, with buyers for all types eager to fill order books.
