Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep. Sale of Store Lambs, Monday 13th November 2023. Prime Lambs More lambs were forward today with 718 going under the gavel, to average out at a pleasing 257p/kg, with over half the sale being hill bred. Heavy lambs continue to add up nicely, with Cheviots selling to £153 from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof with Texels selling to a top of £143 from DR Preston, Caton. A ring full of Beltex cross lambs sold at £141 from AG Butler, Hambleton. Heavy lambs, full of meat were regularly £135 to £140 or 260p/kg to 270p/kg. Handy weight export type lambs continue to sell to a fast trade, with the best to £130 for Texels from AG Butler, Hambleton or 290p/kg for Beltexs from KA Purtill, Wigan with these sorts regularly 275p/kg to 285p/kg. A top price of 290p/kg was achieved twice for texels from CD&HL Mason, Caton and AG Butler, Hambleton. Mashan sold to £123 from WI&AM Atkinson, Bleasdale who sold a pen of Mules to £119.50. Other pens of Mules sold to £118.50 from RH&C Ayrton, Abbeystead. Swaledales sold to a top of £106 for a pen of 24 from KM&KJ Curwen, Abbeystead. A super pen of Suffolks from PG Thornton, Scorton sold to £113 with Texels from the same home to £108. A full ring of long term smart bred Beltex cross lambs from PD Pye, Over Wyresdale sold to £91. More hill bred lambs of offer, with most of these being longer term lambs. Charolais cross Herdwicks sold to £74 from W Pinter & Son, Clitheroe, Mule wethers to £72 form J Gardner, Bay Horse and Cheviot to £84 from SE&J Gorst, Littledale. All lambs forward averaged £80.50. J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Pigs. Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep, Tuesday 14th November 2023. Pigs Another large entry of pigs across all selections, saw new customers in attendance from as fair a field as the Midlands, East Yorkshire and Scotland, as well as strong local support. The sale peaked at £278 for a large heavy wight cross gilt from M Allen, Yealand with a pen full of five Large White cross Pietrain hogs from JM Navesey, Darwen selling at £230 with gilts from the same home achieving £220. Other gilts at £215 from J Barkley, Whitehaven and £205 from TS Wilson, Cockermouth with saddleback cross to £195 from H Kent, Cockerham. Other well finished prime pigs were generally £160 to £180, with a top price of 232p/kg achieving by JM Navesey, Darwen. A full row of store and weaner pigs saw store gilt selling to £40 form S Crowe, Dalton in Furness with others at £38 from R Carr, Newton Stewart. Weaners sold to £36 for Gloucester Old Spot from MK&LK Whitley & Son, Summerbridge. A shortage of the best heavy and bred ewes saw those forward all to £168 for a Beltex from R Allen, Staveley. Heavy weight first cross ewes sold to £138 for Texel cross from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston with others at £118 from T Sharp, Oxenholme. Store Lambs The catalogue entry of over 5000 store lambs continues to attract new and returning customers from far and wide, with todays sale comprising off smaller, long keep lambs showing the affect of the recent weather change. The strongest well bred lambs continue to meet keen demand, selling to a top price of £120 for Texel cross lambs from JM&NJ Stickland, Whinfell with others at £116 from MJ&RE Smith, Cartmel Fell and £114 from GN Robinson, Kirkby Stephen. Other level well grown pens of stronger lambs were £92 to £99, with mediums £84 to £90 and the longest keep £68 to £70. Mules sold to a top of £102 from JA Law, Carnforth with other pens of stronger Mules selling to £92 from GA Guy, Tebay and G&ID Postlethwaite, Howgill. Steers sold to a top of £1750 for an Aberdeen Angus cross from JT&GV Dobson, Clitheroe with Hereford cross to £1700 from M Shepherd & Son, Pilling with Limousin cross to £1650 from H Birkett & Son, Overton who also sold British Blue cross at £1640. Dairy bred steers sold to £1580 for Swedish Red and White from T&E Garlick & Son, Freckleton who sold others at £1540 and £1510.
