North West Auctions were proud to host the Annual Show and Sale of 320 Texel Rams and Females on behalf of the North West Texel Breeders Club. The sale continues to go from strength to strength, gaining a strong reputation amongst all breeders, and attracting purchasers from far and wide. This year’s sale saw one of the best pre-sale shows seen at North West Auctions, with credit going to the vendors for the quality on offer. A special mention goes to our pre-sale judge Pete Longdin, who we thank for his time and expertise.
The championship rosette was awarded to a much admired ram lamb from M Evans of the Rhaeadr Flock. The ram lamb Rhaeadr Gale Break, sired by Streatlam Fire Cracker and dam sired by Sportsmans Dare Devil. Which went on to sell for the sales top price of 2600gns, purchased by Trefor Ryan-Davies of the Bodnant Flock. A strong class of 28 ram lambs saw the second prize lamb awarded the Reserve Championship rosette from Leigh Smith and Joanna Huddart. This ram lamb Majestic Go Getter, sired by Sportsmans Express went on the sell for 1100gns to Ruby, Harry and Lily Geldard of the Whitbarrow flock. The first prize shearling ram was awarded to Stainton Friartuck from PK & R Woof which went on to sell to 1100gns to D Pickford of the Thornsett flock. The shearling ram section sold to a top of 2200gns for Cambwell Floyd consigned by TA & R Laird, with this consigner topping the shearling ram class for the fourth consecutive year.
This sale has a strong reputation for being a strong gimmer sale, this year peaking at 1900gns for the first prize Gimmer Shearling from the Stainton Flock purchased by Messrs Teward of the New View flock, with others selling to 1500gns from the Far Hey Flock. Ewe lambs peaked at 1100gns from Leigh Smith & Joanne Huddart of the Majestic Flock with this lamb finding a new home with Lewis Walton of the Oaktons flock.
A buoyant trade throughout the sale, with buyers forward from the nationwide, ensuring a successful clearance rate of 87%.

A fantastic Beltex x lamb from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe sold to a top of £147 with this good home also selling other pens of heavy weight Texel x lambs to £139. Heavy Continental lambs were regularly selling at £130 plus, with medium types regularly selling at £110 to £118 or 270p/kg to 280p/kg. More hill lambs were on offer today with Mules selling to £119 from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton and Mashams selling to £114 from S&J France, Over Wyresdale. An overall averaged of 264p/kg was achieved.

A shape rise in numbers forward as farmers look to sell rams ahead of the forthcoming breeding sales, with an overall market averaged of 256p/kg for lambs ranging from 31kg to 59kg. Todays sale peaked at £163 for Texel lambs form WG&D Wilkinson, Coniston closely followed by Hampshire’s from J Doidge, Kendal achieving £158, with other heavy weight lambs regularly selling at £140 to £150. Standard weight lambs sold to £134 for Texel x from JG&B Escolme, Killington with others selling at £130 from FE&CM Robinson & Son, Crookland and J&R Waller, Killington. Well finished light weight lambs attracting keen attention, selling to £100 for Texel x from JJ&J Woof & Sons, Dent with others at £99 from EM Standing, Witherslack and £93 from Messrs Young, Lindale.
Well bred well finished lambs reg selling at 280-300p/kg peaking today at 304p/kg for texel x lambs from JG&BJ Escolme, Killington.
Hill bred lambs saw Cheviots sell to £112 and 263p/kg from Stockdale Farms, Sedbergh with Mules selling to £122 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale and 257p/kg form R Capstick & Son, Ingleton. Leaner under finished lambs were a cautious trade and looking better suited to the current buoyant store market.

Heavy pure bred ewes sold to £228 for a pair of Texels from R&E Ladds, Kendal. Others selling to £190 from R G Blackburn, Penrith who sold others at £176. The stronger end of cross bred ewes saw Texel cross to £166 from R Harker & Son, Grayrigg with others at £155 from Messrs Archer, Bolton le Sands and £150 from TMW&H Hodgson, Ulverston, with others generally £128 to £140. Mules sold to £148 from JR&S Handley, Heversham with Cheviot Mules to £128 from A Pickthall, New Hutton. The stronger end of Mules were generally £118 to £128, with mediums £90 to £105.
Hill bred ewes sold to £126 for Cheviot from JE Swan, Cartmel Fell with Dalesbreds to £91 from FW Park, Windermere, Herdwicks to £80 from G Nelson, Briggsteers with Swalesdale also achieving £80 from R Harker & son, Grayrigg. Medium hill ewes were £45 to £60, with smaller and leaner sorts £20 to £35. All ewes forward averaged £75 for an entry of predominately leaner medium weight ewes.

Breeding Ewes & Gimmer Shearlings
North West Auctions were pound to hold its annual show and sale of 1500 Mule and Continental ewes and gimmer shearlings. The pre sale show was kindly judged by Mr Lewis McCarrick, Chorley who we thank for this time and expertise. The first prize pen of Mule shearlings was awarded to P&M Crackles, Burrow which went on to sell for £210 and were purchased by the judge. The first prize pen of Continental shearlings was awarded to a fantastic pen from JM&KM Wilson & Son, Kendal which went on the sell to £220. The sale saw the best quality sheep in tremendous demand, with many purchasers looking to buy shearlings with had lambed and were double vaccinated. N Barker, Dalton saw his best open sell to £205. Strong Mule shearlings from JS&KM Wilson & Son, Kendal sold to £200 twice, with other pens selling to £198 from N Barker, Dalton and £195 from P&M Crackles, Burrow. All Mule shearlings forward averaged £168, which is up £3 on the year. The ewe trade was a little bit sharper than the first breeding sale, with one crop Texel x Beltex ewes from S Rossall, Over Wyresdale sell to £190. Older pure Texel ewes sold to £170 from PF Lee, Over Wyresdale. Three crop Texel ewes sold to £158 from PD Anderton, Scorton. A ring full of full-mouthed Suffolk ewes sold to £138 from W Pinder, Clitheroe.

Store Cattle
A seasonal entry of store cattle saw several returning buyers ringside, looking to secure additional and replacement stores, with all cattle selling to a competitive trade and more needed each sale to fulfil buyers requirements.
Steers sold to a top of £1555 for a Charolais x from RJ&D Holden, Broughton in Furness who sold Aberdeen Angus x at £1460. Other stronger steers were generally selling at £1300-£1350. Dairy bred steers sold to £1375 for a Fleckvieh and Montbeliarde from JE Wightman, Lupton who sold others at £1325. A keen interest in younger cattle with a consignment of ten month old Blonde x from J Whitworth, Bolton le Sands selling to £1380, with others at £1315.
Heifers saw top price of £1515 for an Aberdeen Angus x from JM Haddow, Hincaster who also sold Charolais x at £1490 and £1480. Other stronger heifers sold to £1435 for a Limousin x from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton with British Blue x selling to £1325 from C Wilson, Witherslack.

OTM Cattle
With farmers in the fields, there was a reduced number of cull cows forward today, therefore selling to an increased trade with buyers keen to secure cows to fulfil orders. An overall market averaged of 157p/kg was achieved, with a large proportion of the sale being dairy cows direct out of the parlour. Cows sold to 177.5p/kg for a Shorthorn x from J Turnbull, Meathop with other beef cows suitable for finishing generally 155p/kg-170p/kg.
Top grossing beef cow was a heavy weight from AT Thelkeld Ltd, Satterthwaite achieving £1340. Dairy cows sold to 171p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from Jenkin Cragg Farms, Kendal with other well fleshed dairy cows 150p/kg165p/kg and cows direct out of the parlour 140p/kg-150p/kg, depending on quality and type. Top grossing dairy cow was a Holstein Friesian from S&M Cooper, Leece achieving £1239.
OTM dairy heifers sold to 191.5p/kg and £1233 for a Holstein Friesian from R&J Dodgson, Natland.

NWA Lancaster enjoyed a busy and buoyant trade, with all vendors leaving well suited with the prices achieved and many reporting ahead of other local sale centres.
Calves & Weanlings
70 calves were forward at the popular weekly sale with a wide range forward catering for all buyer requirements. Bull calves sold to a top price of £500 for a seven week old British Blue x from JP&C Robson, Garstang with this price also achieved for a nine week old Hereford x from TE&M Kidd, Ellel. Other stronger rearing bull calves were generally £400 to £450. Medium bull calves sold to £395 for a British Blue x from Wallbank Farm Ltd, Over Wyresdale with Charolais x selling to £360 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. A consignment of month old calves from Richmond Hall Farm Ltd, Cockerham were well received, selling to £295 for a British Blue x, with others at £275. Native sired rearing calves sold to £380 for an Aberdeen Angus x from W&G Cornthwaite & Son, Claughton on Brock with Hereford x selling to £365 from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green with month old
Aberdeen Angus x selling to £250. Dairy bulls sold to a top price of £210 for an eight week old British Friesian from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green who sold others at £200 (x2) and £190 (x2). Other nice rearing calves sold to £160 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with other generally £120 to £150 and the smallest £50 to £80. Heifer calves sold to £430 for a ten week old British Blue x from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale who sold younger heifers at £380. Month old beef heifers sold to £295 for British Blue x from C&J Smith, St Michaels and £290 from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale with other generally £220 to £260. Native sired heifers saw six week old Herefords to £270 from TE&M Kidd, Ellel with Aberdeen Angus x selling to £250 from WG Cornthwaite & Son, Claughton on Brock with younger three week old Aberdeen Angus x selling to £175 from RT Halhead, Cockerham.
Several weaned calves forward today saw Limousin x bulls (5 months old) sell to £570, British Blue x (4 months old) sell to £540 with others at £535 and Herefords at £525. Next weeks sale include the prize show of rearing calves under 56 days, with the show commencing at 10am. The weekly sale of store cattle at Lancaster saw a rise in trade, with all steers forward averaging £1378 and heifers £1282.
Steers sold to a top price of £1810 for a Beef Shorthorn from EW&CR Clegg & Sons, Stalmine with J&H Bland & Son, Levens selling Charolais x at £1700 and Aberdeen Angus and Limousin x at £1690. Simmental x sold to £1600 from WG&R Riley, Chorley with British Blue x achieving £1580 from J&H Bland & Son, Levens, Hereford x to £1510 from SW&K Metcalfe & Son, Whittington. Dairy steers sold to £1480 for Fleckviehs from JS Clark & Son, Catforth and Holstein Friesians to £1440 from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse. Strong well grown steers were regularly £1400 to £1600, with buyers keen to secure store cattle to fill the fattening sheds.

NWA Lancaster once again proved to be the place to sell cull cows with the cattle forward today averaging 158p/kg, well ahead of other local centres. Can you afford not to sell at Lancaster! Only a handful of beef cows forward, sold to 184.5p/kg for a Limousin x from JE&AC Clark & Son, Melling who sold others at 179.5p/kg. Other beef cows were generally 155p/kg to 175p/kg, with the younger medium beef cows attracting a keen interest from finishers. Top grossing beef cows achieved £1666 and £1633 from JE&AC Clark, Melling with others generally selling at £1150 to £1300. Dairy cows saw 179.5p/kg for a heavy weight Holstine

Top grossing dairy cow was a Holstein Friesian from J&G Thornley, Kirkham achieving £1480, closely followed by J Bargh & Son, Morecambe achieving £1470 and £1461.
