J36 Rural Auction Centre: Rough Fell & Charmoise, Saturday 12th October 2024.

Charmoise

Junction 36 held its annual show and sale of Charmoise rams and females. The sale commenced with females where a 100% clearance was achieved. These sold to a high of 500gns for Stonedge MP02528. Rams followed with a ringside of commercial buyers looking to take advantage of the lambing ease that goes with this breed, many rams going to cover ewe lambs.

The sale peaked at 580gns for Armstrong ARM01666 from Miss Rebecca Armstrong, while George Edgar pre sale champion was next at 520gns. The consignment from DJ Williams reached 450gns and 400gns was achieved by OL Roberts.

NWA would like to thank the Charmoise sheep society for there continued support.

Rough Fell

Rough Fell Rams sell to 8500gns

The annual prize show and sale of breeding rams was held at North West Auctions on Saturday 12th October which saw breeders descend from far and wide to this popular and much anticipated sale.

The sale peaked at 8500gns for the much admired shearling Cautley Thwaite Hurricane from MD&JD Handley, Sedbergh selling to TLB&J Knowles, Selside and K Milburn & A Devlin, Sedbergh. The Handley’s later sold Cautley Thwaite Harrier at 7000gns to MP&A Capstick, Kirkby Stephen. Other notable prices included MP&A Capstick, Kirkby Stephen selling Brownber Huntsman at 3500gns to J Hodgson, Askham who also sold Brownber Holistic at 3000gns to P&S Hoggarth, Sedbergh. I&M Mallinson, Selside sold High Cark Hunter to MJ&JD Handley, Sedbergh for 3200gns. Longgills Highlight from NC&S Dodd, Kirkby Stephen sold at 2600gns with Fawcett Bank Hercules 2400gns from S Milburn, Dent and JT Capstick, Kirkby Stephen selling Yew House Hercules at 2200gns. Ram lambs peaked at 700gns from J&I Capstick, Kirkby Stephen purchased by JE Harding, Caernarfon.

Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Prime Lambs & Cast Sheep, Monday 14th October 2024.

Monday morning mixture met with much momentum.

Prime Lambs

Once again numbers continue to rise at this popular Monday morning market, with new and returning customers from through the northern counties and beyond. The best well bred and fed lambs continue to attract a keen buyer interest selling to £150 for a pen full of Beltex cross lambs from R&A Easterby, Westhouse. Other pen fulls sold to £141.50 from WS Burrow Ltd, Silverdale, £141 J&M Cockett, Ingleton, £140.50 PJ&ES Rogerson, Appleby, £139 GR&A Foy, Conder Green and £138.50 DR Preston, Caton. Other heavy meated lambs were generally £128 to £135, with the best standard weights £118 to £125. Several pens of lighter weight lambs forward, providing they have finish are met with buyers approval, selling to £115 with other lights £92 to £98. Hill bred lambs continue to come forward in greater numbers, with Cheviots to £127.50, horned £126.50, Cheviot Mules £122.50 and Mules to £120.

An overall market SQQ of 281p/kg, for lambs forward with variable finish. The sale peaked at 333p/kg from R&A Easterby, Westhouse with others at 323p/kg from J&M Cockett, Ingleton, 321p/kg D Cockett, Ingleton, 318p/kg PJ&ES Rogerson, Appleby and 315p/kg GR&A Foy, Conder Green. Other pure and ¾ bred well finished lambs were generally 290p/kg to 310p/kg, with the best first cross 280p/kg to 295p/kg with grass finished lambs generally 260p/kg to 275p/kg, with several pens of under finished lambs at realisation, and perhaps better suited to the buoyant store market.

To ensure maximum returns vendors are encouraged to feed lambs, to put on the final coat of paint.

Pure hill ewes sold to £82 for Cheviots, with todays entry comprising of predominately lean horned ewes generally £40 to £65, with the very smallest and leanest at realisation.

Bigger numbers and a better trade.

Prime Lambs

A larger show of prime lambs forward at Junction 36 met a stronger trade on the week. Meat and size were both very well bid for. The increase in demand requires more numbers on a Tuesday going forward. Heavy Beltex lambs sold to 317p/kg at 48kg for a pair from Messrs Crowe, Ashtree Cottage. Lighter Texel lambs from Messrs Escolme, Low Stangerthwaite sold to 312p/kg. Texel lambs from Messrs Hodgson, Arklid Farm hit £170 x3 and £169 for a pen of four Suffolks. An overall market average of 280p/kg was achieved.

A seasonal entry of 560 ewes sold to a stronger trade, as strength starts to now come forward. The strongest pure ewes sold to £234 for Texels, with other medium pure and better end first cross ewes regularly £150 to £170. Medium types were £125 to £138, with several feeding orders £98 to £112. Heavy Mules sold to £139 with others £136, mediums £110 to £122, feeding types £88 to £99 and leaner harder worked sorts £70 to £85. Pure hill ewes sold to £108 for Rough Fells, £104 Cheviots, £98 Gritstones, £80 Swaledale and £74 for Herdwicks. Mediums horned ewes were generally £55 to £70, lighter leaner weight £38 to £46, with the smallest and leanest at realisation. A consignment of Pygmy goats sold to £82, with other pen fulls at £63 and £60.

Leaners hard worked continental rams were £100 to £130, with hill rams to £108. The leanest hill rams were £55 to £70.

Calves

Bull calves again saw a great trade for the best types, with plainer types harder to place. Top price today of £540 for a British Blue from JR Robinson, Nook with Limousins to £530 from Langley Park, Millom. One month old bull calves sold to £490 for a British Blue from B&JM Crowe, Witherslack with others to £470 from JW&TE Sharp, Lyth and £460 from A Pickthall, New Hutton. Charolais’s also sold to £460 from Gibson & Berry, Endmoor. Native sired sold to £420 for Herefords from J Hornby & Son, Stank. Black and white bulls sold to £155.

Heifer calves sold to £430 from R&J Dodgson, Natland for Limousins with others to £385 from Langley Park, Millom. A nice trade was seen for young month old British Blue heifers, with these selling to £350 from A Pickthall, New Hutton, £340 from B&JM Crowe, Witherslack, £340 from DR&C Galbraith, Kendal and £320 from JW&TE Sharp, Lyth. Charolais sold to £315 from Gibson & Berry, Endmoor. Native sired heifers sold to £270 for an Aberdeen Angus.

A good show of stirks forward today with these selling to £860 for a pair of Aberdeen Angus cross from A&E Clarkson, Thurnham. Bazadaise bullocks sold to £840 from Ireland Farm, Kirkby Lonsdale. Bull stirks sold to £800 from R&J Dodgson, Natland with six month old Herefords to £770 from RJ&J Gardner, Kendal.

Store cattle fly if the shelves at J36.

The fortnightly sale of stores sees an electric trade from start to finish, with a healthy and very eager ringside of buyers throughout.

A smart 14 month old Limousin bullock sold to £1580 from CI Briggs, Ambleside. A single Aberdeen Angus bullock also hit £1580 from GM Metcalfe, Underbarrow. While W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe topped the British Blue trade reaching £1560 for a pair of bullocks.

Heifers topped at £1530 from Pearson & Jackson, Crook. Younger Limousin heifers from B Butterfield & Son, Burton in Kendal reached £1460. Bulls averaged a whopping £1320, topping at £1500 for a Shorthorn from DJ Dickinson, Haverthwaite.

75 OTM cattle forward, topping the pp/kg today was a Hereford steer from JE Wightman, Kendal with this reaching 244.5p/kg. An Aberdeen Angus cast bull from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe reached 209.5p/kg, with top price cows reaching the same price this being from GM Metcalfe, Underbarrow and MW&M Hodgson, Grange Over Sands. Black and white sold to 199.5p/kg from Messrs Ellwood, Grizebeck and 197.5p/kg from RJ&ML Lowery, Cartmel.

Top grossing today was £1925.18 for a Limousin cast bull from D Penellum, Kirkby in Furness with a South Devon cow next at £1836.49 with this coming from AT Threlkeld, Ulverston. Black and white cows topped at £1576.05 from GM Metcalfe, Underbarrow, with others to £1526.58 from RJ&ML Lowery, Cartmel.

Calves & Weanlings

A smaller show of 53 calves were forward today, with all calves sought after. Strongest bull calves continued to sell above vendors expectations for the time of year, with a forty day old Charolais from JH Towers, Tunstall selling to £540 twice and £530. A younger one month old Charolais sold to £480 from AD&RL Milner, Brock. Native sired bulls sold to £320 for a Hereford from JR Newsham, Conder Green. Black and white bulls sold to £195 from the same home. A young show of heifer’s calves forward, with real strength few and far between. However very sweet making sorts sold to £350 from AD&RL Miler, Brock for British Blues and Charolais cross to £320 from JH Towers, Tunstall. An eighteen day old Charolais sold to £260 from the same home. Montbeliarde heifers sold to £200 at less than one month old from GJ&G Billington, Garstang. Weaned calves sold to £690 for Aberdeen Angus steers from Mason Birkland Barrow, Over Kellet with British Blue bulls to £580 form AW&AM Park, Ellel.

Store Cattle

Lancasters weekly store sale saw a reduced number on offer, which saw no let up in trade, as buyers are eager to replenish their fat cattle sheds. Steers today averaged £1470 and heifers at £1300, with some cattle showing the signs of the recent autumnal weather. Topping the leader board today with a pair of British Blue steers was M Shepherd & Son, Pilling at £1820. JD&GM Bracken, Garstang sold a trio of British Blues at £1800. Plenty of other British Blue steers were round the £1650 to £1780 mark. A pair of Limousin steers sold to £1800 from EJ Ward & Sons, Nether Kellet with other Limousins to £1700 from L Parson & Sons, Leven. 24 month old Angus steer were trading around the £1550 mark. Hereford steers from J Lamb, Glasson sold to £1600 for a pair, with a ring full to £1590 from MS&G Mason, Kirkby Lonsdale. Friesian steers were very much in demand today, topping at £1540 from A&E Clarkson, Thurnham with plenty of others trading around the £1270 to £1380 mark.

Heifer stores today every as good as recent weeks, with J&H Bland, Levens achieving £1560 for British Blues who also had others at £1460. A pair of Simmental from EJ&PE Burrow, Storth sold to £1500, with other Simmental at £1460 from EJ Ward & Sons, Carnforth. J&H Bland continued their good days trading with Angus heifers to £1480. Other Angus heifers to £1450 from EW&CR Clegg & Son, Stalmine who also had Shorthorn heifers to £1420.

OTM Cattle

The weekly sale of OTM cattle at Lancaster saw 130 through the bottom ring, with a pleasing average of 165p/kg being achieved for the show of very weathered plain cattle on offer. Anything fit and fleshy easily sold, with poorer sorts at realisation.

Topping the cast ring today would be local and loyal supporter A Kirkby & Co, Pilling with a cracking 700kg British Blue steer at £1878. Angus OTM heifers were not far behind at £1711or 274.5p/kg from TJ Robinson, Milnthorpe. EJ Ward, Nether Kellet sold at Limousin at £1596 or 269.5p/kg.

Best bred OTM cows saw R Capstick & Son, Ingleton at £1563 for a Limousin, with Angus cows at £1558 from W&A Cardwell, Stalmine. Friesian cows sold to £1523 or 274.5p/kg from H Halhead, Nether Kellet with Kelsall & Wood, Lancaster at £1420. Plenty of other good Friesian cows were around the £1300 to £1400 mark and late 180p/kg - 200p/kg.

Friesian heifers sold to 229.5p/kg firstly from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe and secondly from AT Burrow, Gressingham who also has top grossing Friesian heifer at £1352. Other Friesian heifers were around 190p/kg.

Just a handful of cast bulls in this week topping of 219.5p/kg or £1646 from AT Burrow, Gressingham and a Limousin bull from F&JM Mason, Carnforth at £1583.
