Spring Lambs

A small entry of spring lambs were forward, selling to £169 for Suffolk cross from WN&D Smith & Sons, Cockerham with Dorsets to £152 from MJ&LC Lund, Quernmore.

Prime Hoggs

No Monday morning blues at NWA Lancaster with buyers ringside keen to fulfil early Monday morning orders. Best bred well finished hoggs sold to £252 for Charollais cross from T Taylor, Woodplumpton who sold others at £250, £250, £246 and £238. A run of heavy well finished Texel cross hoggs from GH Sanderson & Family, Preston sold to £240, with others at £238, £232 and £230. Other heavy well finished hoggs were regularly £200 plus, to include pure Cheviots from J&H Davis, Cabus at £214. Standard weight hoggs sold to £196 for a pen full of Texel cross from AG Butler, Hambleton who sold others at £188, £182 and £180 from S&JE Cornthwaite, Brookhouse. Heavy hill bred hoggs sold to £179 for Dalesbreds from A&AM Wright, Roeburndale who sold Mashams at £169, with Mules to £167 from J Bargh, Morecambe. Lighter weight hoggs were keenly competed for, selling to £138 from T&E Burrow, Slyne with others at £129 from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth who also sold Herdwicks at £112.

An overall market averaged of 388p/kg was achieved, topping at 452p/kg for Charollais cross from T Taylor, Woodplumpton who old others at 449p/kg. Texels sold to 445p/kg from AG Butler, Hambleton. Other well bred well finished hoggs were regularly 400p/kg to 420p/kg. Hill bred hoggs sold to 404p/kg for Cheviots from J&H Davis, Cabus with Mules to 390p/kg from J Smith, Brookhouse. Other well finished hoggs were 380p/kg to 400p/kg.

Cast Sheep

Cull ewes achieved an overall market average of £108, with over half the entry being leaner light weight hill ewes. Heavy pure ewes sold to £290 for a Texel from PD Anderton, Scorton with other heavy ewes regularly £180 to £210. Mules sold to £159 from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth with others at £148 from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe.

All Mules forward averaged £118. Hill ewes sold to £118 for Dalesbreds from S&J France, Over Wyresdale. A large entry of leaner hill ewes were generally £75 to £90, depending on breed and quality. Only the smallest and leanest were less.

Sheep with Lambs at Foot

The largest show of sheep with lambs were forward at our annual show and sale kindly sponsored by MB Nutrition, which saw the winning rosette award to Myerscough College for a pen of Mule ewes with Texel lambs. The sale peaked at £380 (£190 per life) for a pure Badger Face Texel shearling with gimmer lamb at foot from M Gorst, Dolphinholme who sold other twin outfits at £300 to £340. Texel ewes with twin Texel lambs sold to £340 from TR Gorst, Bay Horse with other outfits from this same good home to £335 and £320. Buyers are now looking for younger sheep for flock replacements, with one crop Continental ewes with twin lambs selling to £310 from J Smith, Brookhouse. Others were regularly £270 to £300. Mule shearling with twin lambs sold to £260 from M Gorst, Dolphinholme with two crop ewes with Texel lambs selling at £250 T Ayrton & Sons, Over Wyresdale. Aged Mule ewes with twins sold to £235 from Myerscough College. Older ewes were generally £80 to £85 per life. The first hoggs of the season were forward today and sold to £225 for pure Blue Texels with single lambs from M Gorst, Dolphinholme.

A small show of spring lambs saw light weights sell to £145 from P&C Parker, Preston.

Prime Hoggs

A mixed show of hoggs forward which saw hard fed and well meated hoggs sell to a super trade, with leaner types a little harder to place and an overall averaged of 384p/kg achieved. The sale peaked at £252 for Texels from JB Airey, Kendal with pens of Beltexs to £246 from JA Airey, New Hutton. Suffolks sold to £245 from L McCarrick, Chorley. Heavy well finished hoggs were at the £220 to £240 mark. Best bred hoggs were keenly sort after, with 45kg Texel cross hoggs to £224 from AG Butler, Hambleton who sold other pens to £222. Mule hoggs sold to £214 from N Barker, Burton in Kendal with 46kg hoggs selling to £184 from AW&AM Clarke, Windermere. Cheviot hoggs sold to £185 from SH&LE Birkett, Nether Kellet who sold other pens to £182. Pens of Swaledales sold to £179 from AW&AM Clarke, Windermere with others to £170 from EW&JR Parkinson, Dunsop Bridge with a pen of 41kg Dalesbered hoggs to £153 from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton.

More hoggs are needed on a weekly basis to fulfil our active ring side of ten buyers requirements.

Please note it was noted from many buyers that they are now requiring hoggs to be either Farm Assured and VAN accredited.

Cast Sheep

The weekly sale of cull ewes saw an overall average of £118 achieved, with a large proportion of the sale being leaner hill type ewes. The sale peaked at £210 for Suffolk ewes from MW&PA Rollason, Meathop with other heavier end ewes £175 to £200. Mules sold to a top of £174, with other heavy Mules regularly £155 to £165. Medium sized well meated ewes of all breeds were generally £120 to £140, with the smaller and leaner end £95 to £115.

Pure hill ewes sold to £154 for a Rough Fell from WJ Dawson, Sedbergh with Cheviots to £150 from TJ Winder, Tebay, Swaledales sold £128 WJ&LA Barker, Arkholme and Scotch Black Face £118 from G&ID Postlethwaite, Riddings. Medium hill ewes regularly £90 to £105, with the smallest and leanest sorts seeing a sharp rise generally £75 to £90, with only the very smallest less.

Cull rams sold to £218, with other stronger end £170 to £210. Leaner Continental rams were £130 to £150. Hill rams sold to £152 for Cheviots and £146 for Rough Fells.

The annual show and sale of ewes and shearlings with lambs at foot attracted a large number of local and travelled buyers, which ensured a fast trade from start to finish. The pre sale show was kindly sponsored by Greencoat Farm, Carrs Billington and City and Guilds, with the judging in the capable hands of Lewis and Luke McCarrick, Chorley, who awarded the results as followed:

Texel shearlings with twin Texel lambs from the same good home sold to £355, with a pen of ten Mule shearlings with Texel twin lambs selling to £335. Aged Texel ewes with twin lambs from M&S Leech, Flookburgh sold to £350 with Beltex ewes with Beltex cross lambs to £345 from JC&E Pedley & Sons, Kirkby Stephen. A ring full of aged Texel ewes with Beltex twin lambs from RT Colbear, Colby sold to £310 with others from the same home to £305. Mule shearlings with Texel lambs sold to £275 from TH Gibson & son, Staveley. Texel shearlings with single lambs selling to £255 from DW Parsons, Ackenthwaite. The first hoggs of the season saw a ring full from RC Wharton & Son, Appleby sell to a top of £240, with others from the same home to £215.

Calves

106 rearing calves saw the strongest Continental bulls sell to £555 for a British Blue cross from AE Luffman, Sedbergh with others at £510 from Langley Park Farms, Millom and £495 from DW&EA Cottam, New Hutton. Stronger medium bulls were regularly £480 to £420, with month olds generally £280 to £340. Only the youngest rearing bull calves were £180 to £230.

Heifer calves sold to £420 for a Limousin cross from Langley Park Farm, Millon. British Blue cross sold to £350 from A Pickthall, New Hutton, £340 from HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick and Charolais to £330 from MH&AR Robinson, Old Hutton. Other medium heifers were generally £250 to £300, with younger heifers £180 to £220.

35 weaned calves saw seven month old Limousin cross steers from WJ Dawson, Sedbergh sell at £1040 with Aberdeen Angus cross selling to £880 from PW&D Swindlehurst, Underbarrow. Younger Aberdeen Angus steers from Messrs Young, Lindale sold at £620.

Heifer stirks sold to £810 from WJ Dawson, Sedbergh with younger Aberdeen Angus cross selling to £540 from Messrs Young, Lindale with others £470 to £520.

Bull stirks sold to £920 for Limousin cross from FW Park, Windermere with younger four month old British Blue cross bulls selling to £560 from W Samper, Chipping.

Store Cattle

A keen ringside of local and travelled buyers ensured a strong trade was achieved, a pair of Simmental bullocks from LA&M Lambert, Lupton sold to £1760 with others from the same home to £1680. Native bullocks saw Aberdeen Angus to £1550 from KG&LM Park, Witherslack. Many of the stronger end bullocks were regularly £1400 to £1500. Friesians sold to £1400 from S&M Cooper, Leece.

Yearling bullocks were in high demand with the best selling to £1400 from JT Proctor, Flookburgh. Limousins sold to £1330 from GB&EA Metcalfe & Son, Kirkby Lonsdale with Charolais to the same price from HR&KA Hodgson, Barbon. Grazing bullocks were regularly selling at £1000 to £1100.

A pen of three heifers sold to £1500 for British Blues from KG&LM Park, Witherslack with Simmental heifers to £1460 from LA&M Lambert, Lupton. Yearlings saw a pen of smart home bred heifers sell to £1330 from FW Park, Windermere with others selling to £1270 from SW Atkinson & Son, Crook. Grazing types were regularly £980 to £1550.

A nice show of bulls were forward, which saw Limousins sell twice to £1270 from Thrimby Farms, Penrith with Charolais from the same home to £1260. Many more bulls could have easily been sold to the vendors advantage.

57 cull cows and OTM cattle were forward, with all cows selling to a market average of 171p/kg. Feeding type beef cows sold to 209p/kg for a British Blue cross from G&C Rylands, Under Barrow with others at 207p/kg from FW Park, Windermere. Other beef cows were generally 185p/kg to 200p/kg. Topping at £1610 for a Stabiliser from JA&R Geldard & Sons, Levens who sold other at £1555. An entry of parlour type dairy cows sold to 184.5p/kg from Jenkin Cragg Farms, Kendal who sold others at £1383, with medium diary cows generally 165p/kg to

180p/kg and the lightest and leanest generally 110p/kg to 140p/kg, depending on quality.

OTM heifers sold to 211p/kg and £1288 for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Sowerby, Appleby.

OTM steers sold to 244.5p/kg and £1707 for British Blue cross from JW Robinson & Son, Farleton.

Cull bulls sold to 184p/kg and £1664 for an Aberdeen Angus from Messrs Ellwood, Kirkby in Furness.

Packed ringside of buyers saw best rearing bull calves sell to £545 for a Limousin x from D & M Foster with sold others at £525 with British Blue x from £490 from JP & C Robson, Garstang. Several weaned calves forward today saw 7 month old British Blue steers from Throstle Nest Farms, Pilling sell to £880 who also sold British Blue x heifers sold to £790 and £760. 4 month old British Blue x heifers from WG Farms Ltd, Cockerham sold to £615 for a ring full with other regularly £550-£600. 12 week old Aberdeen Angus bulls from J & G Thornley, Kirkham sell to £500 with others £470-£490.

others 195-215p/kg, medium types 175-190p/kg with leaner parlour type cows 130-150p/kg.
