Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs & Cast Sheep. Monday 15th July 2024.

Prime Lambs

A few less lambs were forward with a sharper trade seen than in previous weeks for all classes. Again, the best fed lambs met the most demand, with some buyers still cautious over under finished lambs. Texel lambs sold to £158 from DM Eames, Abbeystead with Beltex to £155 from D&D Huddleston, Wray and Suffolks £144 from DM Eames, Abbeystead. Best bred lambs were regularly 320p/kg to 330p/kg, topping at 338p/kg from JM Kelsall & Son, Quernmore with nice bred continental lambs regularly 295p/kg to 300p/kg.

Suffolk: £144 Middle Lee Farm, £138 Cocker House Farm, £130, £128 Beaumont Gate, £126 Bailey Hey Farm, £124 Middle Lee Farm. Continental: £140 Stubbins Farm, £135, £132 Cocker House Farm. Mule: £133, £125, £122 Yates Farm. Charollais: £117 Low Pleasant.

Cast Sheep

A bumper entry of 215 cast ewes were forward, with all selling to a high demand. Texel ewes sold to £180 from C Ellison, Pilling with first cross Texel ewes to £163 from JE Harrison, Winmarleigh. Masham ewes sold to £140 from S&J France, Over Wyresdale with Mule ewes to £132 from RH&C Ayrton, Abbeystead. The strongest end Mules were £125 to £130. More hill ewes coming forward now with Cheviots selling to £124 from D&D Huddleston, Wray with Lonks to £102 from W Huddleston, Wray, Dalebreds to £92 from S&J France, Over Wyresdale and a ring full of Swalesdale to £90 from RH&C Ayrton, Abbeystead. Medium fit Swaledales were regularly £60 to £70 a head.

Prime Lambs

More lambs were forward with1180 going through the ring, and a pleasing averaged of 305p/kg achieved for all forward. Once again, all buyers were looking for well meated lambs, with under finished sorts still harder to place. The best bred lambs sold to 372p/kg from WS Burrow & Son, Silverdale, with these regularly over the 350p/kg mark. Nice commercial types were regularly 305p/kg to 315p/kg.

- Texels sold to £211 from PK&R Woof, Stainton.

- Suffolks sold to £178 from DE&SM Moorhouse, Natland.

- Beltex sold to £171 from WS Burrow & Son, Silverdale.

- Charollais sold to £171 from E Dodgson, Kendal.

- Mules sold to £141 from S&B Capstick, Old Hutton.

Cast Sheep

338 cast sheep were forward, selling to a top of £218 for a Texel from Thrimby Farms, Penrith, with others at £216 from E&H Winder, Kirkby Stephen. Suffolk ewes sold equally as well, reaching £188 from F&SA Edmondson, Ulverston. All powerful pure bred sheep exceeded the £180 mark. JA&R Geldard, Levens sold Lleyns to £162, with Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale topping the Mules at £158. All well fleshed Mules were regularly £130 upwards. Hill ewes sold to a top of £125 for Cheviots from J

Brown, Ambleside, with Swaledales to £120 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale and Rough Fells to £114 from EJ Hodgson, Lambrigg. All well meated horned ewes surpassed the £90 mark, with the next grade down £60 to £80.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Opening Fortnightly Sale of Store Lambs. Thursday 18th July 2024.

Store Lambs

The opening sale of store lambs at Junction 36 saw a quality selection of all breeds and sizes put before a ringside of new and existing buyers. The sale achieved an overall average of £92.50, an increase of £15 on the year, with many more lambs could have been sold to the vendor’s advantage. The sale peaked at £136 for Texels from B Wilson & Son, Selside with a ring full from RI Dixon, Newton selling to £117.50. All Texel lambs with size and potential surpassed the £100 mark. Suffolks sold to £99 for a pen of thirty from AT Threlkeld, Ulverston. Cheviot Mules sold to £94 from JT&A Armistead, Selside and North of England Mules sold to a top of £86.50 for a ring full from B Wilson & Son, Selside. A few smaller long keep lambs were forward today, with these looking as good a trade as any, regularly selling between £80 to £90.

Sale statistics:

- Suffolks averaged £92.73.

- Mules averaged £85.20.

Calves & Weanlings

Lancasters weekly show of calves and stirks saw an increased entry of 90 forward, with some real quality on offer today. Two outstanding Charolais’s from JH &Towers & Sons, Tunstall topped the bull calf section at £620 and £610. British Blues from JP&C Robson, Garstang reached £565, with other British Blues at £545 from GH Sanderson & Family, Catforth. Limousins sold to £520 from D&M Foster, Out Rawcliffe. An Angus from JP&C Robson, Garstang and a Hereford from JR Newsham, Conder Green topped the natives at £495.

Heifer calves sold equally as well, with these topping at £530 for a British Blue from JP&C Robson, Garstang followed by a Charolais at £510 from JH Towers, Tunstall. Month old British Blue heifers sold to £395 on two occasions, first from TL Baldwin & Son, Forton and secondly from GH Sanderson & Family, Catforth. Natives sold to £380 for a Hereford from JR Newsham, Conder Green. All calves forward sold to a market averaged of £361.

A good show of weaned calves and stirks were forward, with these topping at £810 for a British Blue bull from TD&A Gardner, Larbreck with this home also selling Montbeliarde bulls to £750. Freshly weaned British Blue heifers sold to £570 from JC Morphet, Hale with steers from this home at £560.

Store Cattle

A catalogue entry of 185 store cattle sold to a trade similar on the week, with all steers today averaging £1471.57 and heifers £1275.41. Top price of the day came from J&H Bland & Son, Ninezergh for a Hereford steers reaching £1780. Next was £1760 achieved for both a trio of British Blues also from the Bland Family and a pen of four Aberdeen Angus from T Robson & Son, Singleton. Numerous other pens of well grown store steers easily surpassed the £1700 mark. Heifers reached £1610 on two occasions both from J&H Bland & Son, Ninezergh. Followed by a pair of British Blues from CG Birkett, Carnforth at £1470, with a pair of Limousins to the same price.

OTM Cattle

The weekly sale of OTM cattle at Lancaster saw a reduced number forward, with farmers taking advantage of the better weather at long last. Two thirds of today’s entry was dairy bred and straight out of the parlour, with a market averaged of 165p/kg achieved.

Topping the trade both per kilo and lump was R & M Lohr-Crawford, Selside with a Limousin cow at 229.5p/kg or £1606. Friesian cows topped at £1518 or187.5p/kg from PW&JM Norris & Son, Hornby with other dairy cows to184.5p/kg from Lawsons Dairy, Cockerham. Good Friesian cows were regularly away around the 175p/kg to 180p/kg range.

Beef bred cows saw plenty of interest with D&C Miller, Cloughton on Brock at 229.5p/kg and other beef bred cows round the 210p/kg to 220p/kg mark.

OTM heifer saw A&V&A Thornton, Cockerham at 229.5p/kg for a Charolais, with Friesians at 219p/kg from WG Farms, Cockerham. Other Friesian heifers were around the 190p/kg to 210p/kg range.

More numbers are required next week, with buyers and facilities to handle 150 plus cows every week.
