J36 Rural Auction Centre: NEMSA Gimmer Lambs, Saturday 14th September 2024.

North West Auctions had the pleasure of conducting the annual prize show and sale of NEMSA gimmer lambs on behalf of the Kendal branch. On Friday evening an outstanding show of sheep were presented at the pre sale show, totalling some 380 sheep across all show classes. Judging this year was carried out be Mr A Collet, Culworth and T Sharp, Kendal who after much deliberation awarded the first prize rosette and the Goad Memorial Trophy to Strickland Hall Farming, Witherslack for their pen of ten. The first prize pen of twenty and receiving the Jim Gibson Memorial Trophy was Messrs Hodgson, Rydal. Thanks must be given to all the show sponsor their continued generous support.

The much anticipated ‘stars in their eyes’ show for individual gimmer lambs was kindly judged by Mr D Watson, Middleton who awarded the championship rosette to TA&JA Dixon, Yoad Pot with this lamb later selling to the evenings top price of £335.

A packed ringside on new and regular, local and travelled buyers ensured a fast and competitive trade throughout the sale, with an overall market average of £151.14 achieved (up £34.82 on the year).

The sale topped at £290 achieved by R Lawrence, Grange Over Sands, closely followed by Messrs Hodgson, Rydal at £275, with £270 achieved by both Strickland Hill Farming and Messrs Hodgson, High Borrans. Other leading pens sold to £240 from J&JA Burrow, Thrusgill, £235 TLB&J Knowles, High Borrowbridge and £230 by both RI Dixon, Low Newton Farm and AC&K Pye, Dunkenshaw, with numerous pens £210 to £225.

Stronger lambs were regularly £160 to £180, runners nicely £140 to £155, with only smaller and younger lambs £125 to £135. The Bruce Willison memorial shield for the best run of lambs in the market was kindly judged by Mr J Capstick, Killington and awarded to R Lawrence, Greaves Farm.

Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Prime Lambs, Cast Sheep & Store Lambs, Monday 16th September 2024.

Early risers catch the trade, with lambs to £180 and 400p/kg at NWA Lancaster Auction Mart.

Prime Lambs

A sharp rise in numbers saw 646 forward, selling to an overall average of 300.44p/kg. The best bred and well finished lambs sold to a top of £180 for Beltex cross from R&DL Cornthwaite, Nateby with others at £178. Other Beltexs sold to £175 from GR&A Foy, Conder Green, £173 P Whitton & Son, Burneside and £170 J&M Cockett, Ingleton. Other pens of heavier pure and ¾ lambs were regularly £160 to £165. The best first cross lambs sold to £158 for Texel cross from P Whitton & Son, Burneside with others at £152 from GA&A Atkinson, Cantsfield and £151 from Myerscough College, with others regularly £138 to £146. Lighter weight lambs full of meat were keenly competed for, selling to £142 for Texel cross from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof with others at £134 from J&M Cockett, Ingleton and £125 from JE Harrison, Winmarleigh. True light weights sold to £115 for Texel cross from W Pinder Jnr, Clitheroe with others at £111 from P&AJ Whittaker & Son, Quernmore. Hill lambs are coming forward in greater numbers, with Cheviot to £140 from D&D Huddleston, Wray who sold others at £139. Horned lambs sold to £118 from W Pinder Jnr, Clitheroe with Mules to £116 from D&D Huddleston, Wray and a ring full at £115.50 from B&SE Carter, Ellel.

The best bred lambs sold to 400p/kg for Beltex cross from J&M Cockett, Ingleton which sold other at 395p/kg. Other well finished ¾ bred lambs finding favour with the buyers, regularly 330p/kg to 350p/kg. The best of the first cross lambs were 300p/kg to 320p/kg, with well finished grass lambs 285p/kg to 300p/kg, with just the lighter weight, under finished lambs less at 260p/kg to 280p/kg.

Cast Sheep

139 cull ewes were forward today, achieving an overall market averaging £90.72, with a large proportion of leaner hill bred ewes. Charollais cross ewes from A Thornton, Woodplumpton led the way at £170, with P Stringfellow, Chorley selling the best of his Texel cross to £164. Other better end and medium Continental cross ewes £135 to £165, with several finding homes with farmers for grazing at £105 to £120. Mules sold to £138 from A Thornton, Woodplumpton with others at £133 from CJ Metcalfe, Ingleton and Myerscough College. Mashams sold to £111 from W Pinder, Clitheroe. Strongest hill ewes sold to £148 for Cheviots from A Thornton, Woodplumpton with a large number of recently weaned Cheviots £75 to £88. Horned ewes sold to £84, with other mediums £60 to £70 and lighter and leaner sorts £40 to £55.

Store Lambs

The fortnightly sale of store lambs sold to an overall average of £91.50, for a wide range of lambs on offer. The best level pens of Texel cross sold to £117 from SE&J Gorst, Littledale who sold others at £102. Well bred longer keep lambs were generally £88 to £94, with only the very smallest less.

The earlier start time of 10am is proving popular with both buyers and sellers, and we strongly encourage vendors to take advantage of the early Monday morning trade. #LAMBS2LAM

Numbers sharply rising week on week with 712 forward today being with over 3/4 of the sale being lean hard worked hill ewes. Real shortage of the very best but those few forward sold to £245 from J Capstick, Ingleton. Best first cross ewes sold to £198 with others £155-£180. Better mediums £110-£130 with a lot of the leaner end going for further feeding. North country mules sold to £145 with Cheviot Mules to £139, with stronger pens to £110-£125, best mediums £95-£108 with a lot of leaner hard worked medium body mule ewes £70-£80 with smaller sorts less. Pure hill ewes sold to £99 for Dalesbred, £94 for Cheviots, £93 for Rough Fell, Lonks to £85 and Herdwicks to £80. Hard worked lean swaledale ewes generally £38-£50, with several pens of the very smallest and leanest at realisation.

Lancaster Auction Mart: Annual Show & Sale of Gimmer Lambs and Second Sale of Breeding Ewes & Shearlings, Wednesday 18th September 2024.

North West Auctions held its annual show and sale of Mule and continental gimmer lambs, which once again attracted a good deal of interest. Mules enjoyed a good average, levelling at £161.38 (plus £35.76 on the year), with credit to our vendors on a marvellous show.

The pre sale show was kindly judged by John Bargh, Heaton and William Oldfield, Gisburn, while Hazel kettles, Penrith over saw judging off the best run. Thirteen quality pens of ten where out for the show and after much deliberation, the first prize rosette was awarded to a cracking pen from AC&K Pye, Dunkenshaw whilst W&A Cornall, Bank Farm were presented with first place pen of twenty. Thanks also goes to our sponsors Harrison Oils and Massey Feeds.

Top price of the day went to the first prize pen from AC&K Pye, Dunkenshaw with these achieving £270, whist £240 was achieved by WI&AM Atkinson, Holme House and Calderside Farm. A&L Huddleston, Overhouses sold his run of ten to £230 and at £225 was W&A Cornall, Bank Farm. Any number of top pens were over £200, with Drinkall Bros, Catshaw Hall Farm £210 and both R Lawrence, Greaves Farm and B&SE Carter, Cragg End at £205.

The second sale of breeding sheep saw nice farming Mule shearlings sell to £200, with older Mule ewes to £145. Texel cross ewes to £130 and Texel rams sold to £500.

The next breeding sheep sale is the annual ‘Hill Fair Day’ on Saturday 5th October, entries for this sale close on Friday 27th September.

Calves

81 calves and weanlings forward today at the Junction 36 fortnightly sale, British Blue calves continue to be easy to sell with these topping the calves at £545 for a 5 weeks old from A Pickthall, New Hutton. Langley Park Farms, Millom reached £535 and J&B Morley, Appleby topped at £500, eighteen British Blue bull calves averaged £425. Charolais sold to £470 from Gibson & Berry, Endmoor and Aberdeen Angus to £410 from Langley Park Farms, Millom. Heifer calves sold to £400 twice for British Blues from DW&EA Cottam, New Hutton and J&B Morley, Appleby. Charolais heifers sold to £390 and Limousin to £375.

Weaned calves and stirks met a huge amount of interest, with these reaching £810 for a Limousin heifer from D Clapham, Bolton. Bulls sold to £750 for British Blues from RJ&KR Wilkinson, Levens and steers to £670 for four Aberdeen Angus from J Young, Lindale.

Today’s sale including the autumn prize show and sale of store cattle, which saw a quality entry of cattle forward for which all vendors must be complimented. The pre sale show was judged by Mr G Greenwood, Guiseley who awarded the championship rosette to Messrs TA Chapman & Son for a Limousin steer. Todays sale topped at £1780 for a Limousin steers from TA Chapman & Son, Heslington, closely followed by a Blonde cross and Aberdeen Angus from J Hayton & Son, Barrow in Furness at £1740 and £1730. Limousin cross steers from MA&JA Winn, Burneside were also at £1730. Other stronger steers were regularly £1500 to £1700. Steers in forward condition, ready for sheds were regularly £1450 to £1550, with younger yearlings generally £1050 to £1200.

Heifer sold to a top price of £1700 for an Aberdeen Angus from P Stephenson, Carmel with Charolais to £1680 from JM Haddow, Hincasheter. Limousin cross were £1670 from PW Clarke, Crosthwaite and British Blue cross £1650 from MA&JA Winn, Burneside. Other stronger end heifers were regularly £1400 to £1600, with a keen interest in the best sorts for future breeding. Nice farming heifers regularly £1220 to £1350, with yearlings £980 to £1000.

Store bulls sold to a top price of £1480 for a British Blue cross from J&T Hunter, Dent. Evenly grouped batched of cattle met buyers’ approval, and vendors are encouraged to group cattle were possible. The next sale of store cattle is on Thursday 3rd October, which will include the annual prize show and sale of 600 suckled calves followed by 200 store cattle.

OTM Cattle

Numbers rising in every sale with 88 forward today, as farmers look to offload passengers ahead of lying in. The best beef cows sold to 229p/kg on three occasions, with other beef cows in forward condition 210p/kg to 220p/kg and those suitable for finishing 185p/kg to 200p/kg. Top grossing beef cow was a Simmental achieving £1770, with other stronger end beef cows £1500 to £1700. Dairy cows were predominantly medium parlour types today, with these sorts 178p/kg to 185p/kg, learn

parlour type 155p/kg to 175p/kg with the leanest and lighter weight 125p/kg to 150p/kg. Top grossing diary cows was a Norwegian Red and White to £1583, with other heavier diary cows £1100 to £1300.

Cull beef bulls sold to 224.5p/kg for a Limousin and £1953 for a Luing.

OTM heifers sold to 219.5p/kg and £1321 for a Holstein Friesian.

Calves & Weanlings

Calves and weanlings at Lancaster once again saw a buoyant trade for all calves. Rearers topped at £600 for a British Blue bull from J&G Thornley, Kirkham with Aberdeen Angus to £555 from AW&AM Park, Ellel. Other British Blue bulls sold to £545 from V&EJ Chadwick, St Michaels. Heifer calves sold to £440 twice, firstly for a British Blue from J&G Thornley, Kirkham and secondly for an Aberdeen Angus from JS&KM Wilson, High House. Store Cattle

NWA Lancaster renowned weekly store cattle sale saw 280 go through the main ring, with trade very similar on the week. Smaller weathered cattle were slightly harder to place than previous weeks, with autumn fast up on us.

A highlight of the sale today would be P&R Galligan, Cheshire run of twenty five well farmed Charolais steers averaging £1894 and topping the sale at £1960 for a trio, with others from the same good home at £1940 and £1920. A tank of a beast from RH Dodgson, Carnforth sold to £1940 for an Aberdeen Angus, with other Angus steers from the same home to £1800. British Blue steers sold to £1880 for a pair from JD&GM Bracken, Garstang. H Halhead & Son, Nether Kellet with a pair of Charolais and TA Chapman, Helsington with a pair of Limousins both topped the store heifer trade at £1780. British Blues sold to £1660 from JD&GM Bracken, Garstang. Aberdeen Angus heifers sold to £1580 from CE&MA Hewitt, Forton. WT Eastham & Son, Goosnargh had Limousins to £1560.

OTM Cattle

Today’s OTM sale saw a distinctive lack of flesh, and this must be taken into account with the overall average of 165.6p/kg for 93 sold.

Just one cast bull in today from RG&L Holmes, Warton which saw a Simmental to 249.5p/kg or £1808.88.

Topping the OTM cows today was EW&CR Clegg & Son, Stalmine to £1743 for a Shorthorn. Other beef bred OTM’s saw TA Chapman & Son, Helsington sell a Limousin to £1602, who also had top pence per kilo at 224.5p/kg, with others from the same home at 217.5p/kg also for Limousins. Aberdeen Angus OTM cows sold to 199.5p/kg from O Butler, Esprick. Friesian cows sold to £1395 from ME&B Mason & Son, Tatham, with others to 191.5p/kg from B Butterfield & Son, Burton in Kendal.

OTM heifers saw Aberdeen Angus to 239.5p/kg from O Butler, Esprick. Friesian heifers sold to 219.5p/kg twice from AT Burrow, Gressingham with WT Whitaker & Son, Nether Kellet at the same price. All heifers forward averaged 188p/kg.
