The sale topped at 3500gns for Ellergill Gladiator RF4021 consigned by RA Steadman, followed by High Cark Glider at 3000gns, Cotegill Golden Balls RF4029 at 2600gns from E&K Bland with 2500gns achieved twice for Catholes Giant RF3967 and Catholes Governor RF3971 consigned by MJ&JD Handley. An additional seventeen shearling rams sold at above to £1000 barrier. Ram lambs saw the first prize from J Holt, Rosendale sell to 750gns. Sale statistics: 11 aged rams averaged 220gns. 6 ram lambs averaged 285gns. 121 shearlings averaged 600gns. Charmoise Rams & Females The English premier show and sale for the Charmoise Hill sheep society was held at NWA Junction 36 on Saturday 14th October. Buyers and seller were in attendance from throughout the UK, all keen to purchase sheep of this ever increasing popular breed. The sale topped at 550gns for Haford Armani being a shearling ram from the first prize pen of rams from OL Roberts, Ruthin. Other shearling rams sold to 480gns from WB McTaggart, Hawick. Other shearlings were regularly selling at 350gns to 400gns. A keen interest in female from both new and existing breeders saw gimmer shearlings sell to a top price of 400gns from B McTaggart, Hawick who sold others at 300gns and 280gns. Ewes sold to 300gns for a two crop ewe from GE Edgar, Brampton with also achieving 300gns from MR B Moseley, Ceredigion. Other ewes regularly 200gns to 250gns. Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep. Monday 16th October 2023. Prime Lambs A larger show of lambs were forward for our busy ring side of buyers, who ensured everything was keenly bid for. 860 lambs sold to an overall averaged of 251p/kg, with a third of the sale being Mules or hill bred lambs. Heavy lambs would be a sharper trade on the week, with the best selling to £142 for Beltexs from JS Horner, Ingleton. Texels sold to £141 from E Hartley, Hornby who sold others at £139. Continental heavy lambs were regularly selling in the £120’s to £130’s. Medium weight and export type lambs, were once again keenly bid for, with these regularly selling at 260p/kg to 270p/kg and £110 to £115 per head. The best bred lambs were regularly selling at 280p/kg, with the best to 285p/kg from A Brown, Littledale and others to 282p/kg from H Birkett & Son, Overton. Mules saw a ring full sell to £117.50 from WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale who sold others to £115.50. Cheviots sold to £113 from KM&KJ Curwen, Abbeystead. Mules saw a top of £88 from JS Horner, Ingleton with Cheviots selling to £85 from SE&J Gorst, Littledale. J36 Rural Auction Centre: Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep, Tuesday 17th October 2023. Prime Lambs 1200 lambs were forward, which sold to a much improved trade on the week with an overall averaged of 261p/kg achieved. Once again weight was selling to a premium at Junction 36, with super heavy Beltex lambs selling to £177 from GM&A Jackson, Little Eccleston, Texels to £162 from TMW&H Hodgson, Ulverston, £160 twice from JG&BJ Escolme, Killington and JR Handley, Whinfell. Suffolks sold to a top of £145 from DW Hodgson, Cartmel Fell. Continental bred heavy lambs, full of meat were regularly selling at £130 plus. Handy weighted lambs were keenly bid for, with these regularly selling at 265p/kg to 275p/kg. 41kg lambs sold to £120 from J Twigge, Lindale. Beltex lambs sold to a top of 292p/kg from JG&PH Thompson & Sons, Selside with others to 290p/kg from DH Ashworth, Holme. The best bred lambs were regularly selling at 280p/kg to 290p/kg. More Mule and hill bred lambs were on offer today, with Cheviot Mules to £126 from S Crawford, Staveley. Mule lambs sold to £118 from ST&SE Allen, Tebay with others to £115.50 from J Handley, Ingleton. Swaledale lambs sold to a top of £103 from RS&B Harker, Holme. Cast Sheep 707 genuine farmer ewes were forward, with keen competition from buyer for all classes and types, with several grazing order ring side. The sale peaked at £166 for a Texel ewe from IOM with Beltex ewes selling to £164 from A Mason, Whinfell and heavy Cheviots to £152 from C Ainscough, Pilling. Other heavy pure and ¾ bred ewe were generally £125 to £150. Well finished, fit not fat, ewe attraction the keenest attention at £100 to £120. Hill bred ewes sold to £112 for Llynes from JR Handley, Whinfell. Mules sold to £106 for a pen full of Cheviot Mules from MP&CE Buckley, Staveley with North Country Mules to £100 from LA&M Lambert, Lupton. The heaviest Mules were £90 to £100, with others regularly £80 to £90, medium Mules £70 to £80. Buyers were showing caution towards over fat ewes. Horned ewes sold to £67 for a ring full of Rough Fells from MJ&J Handley, Sedbergh with Swaledales to £58 from Fishwick Bros, Longsleddale and Herdwicks to £43 from J&C Denny, Tebay. A large proportion of the sale today comprise of lean and hard worked Swaledales and Herdwick, with the stronger end achieving £35 to £40, mediums £25 to £35 and the very smallest and leanest at realisation. Cull rams sold to £150 for Texels from IOM, with others at £145 from A&A Newbold, Tebay. J36 Rural Auction Centre: Fortnightly Sale of Store Lambs, Thursday 19th October 2023. Store Lambs North West Auctions held its Ambleside show and sale of store lambs on Thursday 19th October, which saw a new market record of lambs forward, with new customers in attendance, selling from throughout the northern counties and buying from throughout the UK. An overall market average of £81.50 was achieved, with all vendors leaving well suited with prices. CLASS 3: 20 PURE HILL BRED LAMBS 1st E Parker, Burnhead Farm 2nd Messrs Hodgson, Rydal Farm Todays sale peaked at £123 for a pen full of Texel x Beltex lambs from R&E Ladds, Kendal who sold another pen full at £122 with others achieving £120 from RA Gibons, Flookburgh. Pure and ¾ bred continental lambs attracting a keen buyer interest, regularly selling at £98 to £110. Medium keep cross bred lambs were nicely selling at £81 to £90, with a large number of longer term lambs regularly selling at £72 to £83, depending on quality and type. Mules sold to £103 for a ring full of Cheviot Mules from M Allen, Yealand with North County Mules selling to £99 from Messrs Caley and Mitchinson, Troutbeck. Pens of well grown stronger Mules were generally selling at £88 to £93, with mediums £83 to ££87. Pure Hill bred lambs sold to a top price of £89.50 for Cheviots from PW Clarke, Crossthwaite with a ring full at £86 from MB Meredith, Coniston. Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Calves, OTM's, Dairy and Store Cattle. Friday 20th October 2023. Dairy Cattle A similar story as reported in other local auction centres, with buyers still requiring additional and replacement stock but with a lesser appetite due to increasing costs and lower milk prices. The sale saw new calved cows sell to £1600, with others at £1400 and £1300 with a total clearance achieved. Calves & Weanlings An entry of 115 rearing calves were forward at the popular weekly sale, which included the special prize show for calves under 56 days kindly sponsored by Semex and Norbreck Genetics and judged today by Mr Peter Anderton. The championship rosette was awarded to a seven week old British Blue x bull from GH Sanderson & Family, Catforth which later sold for £460. The second price bull and reserve champion was a twenty nine day old British Blue x bull from DR&C Galbraith, Grayrigg which achieved a final hammer price of £455. The first price heifer was awarded to a six week old British Blue x from JH Towers & Son, Tunstall which sold at £325, with a twenty one day old British Blue x from DR&C Galbraith, Grayrigg and selling at 2753. Away from the show best rearing beef bull calves were regularly £380 to £420, with mediums £290 to £350 and the very youngest and smallest £220 to £280. Dairy bulls sold to £250 for an eight week old British Friesian from WG Farms Ltd, Cockerham who sold other at £240, with medium rearing dairy bulls generally £85 to £120. Heifer calves sold to £410 for a Charolais x from WG Farms Ltd, Cockerham with other stronger rearing heifers £300 to £380, mediums £240 to £300 and the younger end £140 to £200. A large number of reared and weaned calves were forward, attracting keen buyer interest with a Charolais x bull from AF&BA Dawson, Sedbergh selling at £710. Nicely reared 4 month old British Blue x bulls from SH&M Batty & Son, Quernmore sold to £605 with others at £580 and Aberdeen Angus x at £530. Hereford x sold to £505 from RE&P Miller, Barnacre. Weaned dairy bulls sold to £430 for Holstein Friesians from AF&BA Dawson, Sedbergh with other younger recently weaned bulls to £335 from WG Farms, Cockerham. Other strong pens of steers were regularly selling at £1300 to £1550. Dairy bred steers sold to £1300 for MRI and British Friesians from J&H Bland Ltd, Levens with Fleckviehs selling to £1290 from RW Ewan, New Hutton. All steers forward today averaged £1208. Heifers sold to £1640 for Charolais x from JD&GM Bracken, Catterall with others at £1600 from R&EA Gardner, Briggsteer. OTM Cattle A sharper jump in numbers saw 154 forward, sell to an overall market average of 140p/kg for an entry of predominately leaner parlour type dairy cows, with vendors leaving well suited with prices achieved and reporting well ahead of other local centres. Beef cows sold to a top of 174.5p/kg for an Aberdeen Angus from W&A Cardwell, Stalmine with others generally 148p/kg to 165p/kg, with a keen interest in those suitable for feeding. Top grossing beef cow was an Aberdeen Angus from RR&M Bamber, Gatebeck achieving £1268, with others at £1261 from A&CM Taylor, Lancaster. Heavy well fleshed dairy cows sold to a top of 159.5p/kg for a Holstien
