Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs, Cast Sheep and Store Lambs. Monday 18th September 2023.

Prime Lambs

1055 sheep went through the ring this morning at Lancaster Auction Mart. Prime lambs saw a little lift in trade on the week, with once again heavy and smart bred lambs achieving maximum prices. Texel lambs sold to £144 from CD&HL Mason, Caton with other Texels to £142 from JS Horner, Ingleton. Beltex lambs sold to £140 from R&DL Cornthwaite, Nateby. Heavy Continental bred lambs were regularly selling at £130 to £135. A keen interest in all butcher type lambs, saw Beltex sell to 305p/kg for from M Coxhead, Preston with Texels selling to 300p/kg from JS Horner, Ingleton. The best bred lambs regularly selling at 280p/kg to 285p/kg. Medium weight lambs, full of meat were keenly bid for, with 43kg Texel lambs from M Coxhead selling to £126. Tthers at the same weight sold to £124 from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof. More hill lambs were forward, with all selling to their full value. Cheviots sold to £110 from G&D Ball, Little Eccleston, Masham to £109 from S&J Frace, Over Wyresdale and Mules to £106 from T Ayrton & Sons, Over Wyresdale. 699 lambs sold to a market averaged of 244p/kg.

Cast Sheep

Ewes saw a two tiered trade, with meated strong ewes continuing to sell well and the leaner types harder to place. Texel ewes saw a top of £138 from JS Horner, Ingleton with Texel tups selling to £127 from JE Parkinson & Son, Quernmore. Cheviot Mules sold to £116 from G&D Ball & Sons, Little Eccleston. More Mule ewes on offer today, with the best selling to £106 twice from Pilling Hall, Pilling. Hill ewes saw a top of £86 for Herdwick from D Hough, Dolphinhome with a full ring full of Swaledale ewes selling to £55 from RH&C Ayrton, Abbeystead.

200 store lambs forward averaged £78, with the majority being longer keep lambs. Suffolks sold to £99 from PG Thornton, Scorton with Texels to £97.50 from SE&J Gort, Littledale. Hill lambs saw Masham sell to £84.50 from DM Eames, Abbeystead with pure Cheviots to £79 from SE&J Gorst, Littledale.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Fortnightly Sale of Store Lambs, Thursday 21st September 2023.

Store Lambs

J36 boasted 5241 store lambs which were put before a full ring side of new and returning buyers, achieving an impressive averaged of £84. The sale peaked at £110 for Texel lambs from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe with Beltex lambs to £109 from AC&K Pye, Abbeystead. A further 25 pens sold over £100. Strong first cross Texels were keenly bid for, with these types regularly selling at £90 to £95. Many runs of medium bred Continental lambs sold at £80 to £82. Mule lambs saw the biggest lift on the fortnight with the best selling to £101 from JR Robinson & Son, Nook and a ring full selling to £100 from RI Dixon, Low Newton. 805 Mule wethers averaged an impressing £82. More hill lambs are coming forward now, with Cheviots selling to £96 from S Proctor, Selside and Scotch Black Face £93 from G&ID Postlethwaite, Howgill. A pen of impressive Rough Fells selling to £93 from J Graham, Windermere.

The next sale of store lambs on Thursday 5th October includes the second sale of gimmer lambs, please advise the office with entries by Wednesday 27th October.

Dairy Cattle

The fortnightly sale of dairy saw an abundance of buyers in attendance with a 100% clearance rate achieved. Heifers sold to £1950 from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe who sold others at £1820. Cows sold to £1720 for a third calver from R&K Jenkinson, Pilling. all heifers forward averaged £1710 and cows £1720.

Calves & Weanlings

Lancaster once again proving consistent with numbers and trade, with 78 calves forward and buyers from far and wide. Best rearing bull calves sold to £530 on two occasions for eight week old British Blue x from JP&C Robson, Garstang who sold others at £520 and £480. Charolais x sold to £480 from JE&S Seedall, Mellor. Month old bull calves sold to £355 twice for Charolais x from GJ&G Billington, Claughton on Brock with British Blue x selling to £295 from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale and Aberdeen Angus x to £250 from AW&AM Park & Son, Ellel. Other younger beef bull calves (2-3 weeks old) were generally selling from £150 to £210, depending on breed and quality. Dairy bulls sold to £75 for a three week old Holstein Friesian from Wallabank Farms, Over Wyresdale with others at £60 from WN&D Smith & Sons, Cockerham.

Weaned bull calves sold to £540 for a three and a half month old British Blue x from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale with Limousin x to £500 from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green and Aberdeen Angus x to £470 from W&G Cornthwaite, Garstang. Dairy bulls sold to £360 from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green with Fleckvieh to £300 from JE&S Seedall, Mellor.

Heifer calves sold to £455 for a British Blue x from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale with others at £400 from JR Newsham & Sons, Conder Green who also sold Aberdeen Angus x to £380. Charolais x heifers sold to £355 from EE Thornton & Sons, Morecambe. Younger heifer calves sold to £270 for Charolais x from EE Thornton & Son, Morecambe with other young heifers generally £160 to £220, depending on breed and quality.

Store Cattle

Store cattle continue to rise in numbers, with a buoyant trade experienced throughout the sale with all steers forward averaging £1391 and all heifers averaging £1177.

Steers sold to £1820 for a Blonde from GT&C Blezard, Conder Green with Aberdeen Angus selling to £1740 from TC Whitside & Son, Pilling, Montbeliardes to £1710 from BL&D Banks, Pilling and Limousins to £1710 from MJ Waller, Lupton. Other pens of heavy well grown steers were generally £1550 to £1700, with buyer looking to purchase cattle to go straight in the shed and not showing the effects of the of the recent weather.

Heifers sold to £1510 for a ring full of British Blue x form J&H Bland & Son, Levens with another ring full achieving £1500 from SH&LE Birkett, Nether Kellet. Aberdeen Angus sold to £1430 from RG&B Lewis, Middleton and Limousin x to £1400 from WS Burrow Ltd, Silverdale. Other heavy well grown heifers generally £1200 to £1350, with those in forward condition attracting keenest attention.

OTM Cattle

With the weather turning and farmers are looking to off load cows ahead of housing, an entry of 153 cull / OTM cattle were forward today. Selling to an overall market average of 158p/kg, with a large proportion of todays sale being dairy cows direct out of the parlour.

Beef cows sold to a top of 259.5p/kg for a Limousin from J Deacon, Euxton with other Limousins achieving 219.5p/kg from T Sanderson, Accrington and F&JM Mason, Mansergh. Other well fleshed beef cows were regularly 205p/kg to 215p/kg, with feeding type feed cows 180p/kg to 195p/kg, depending on quality and type.

Top price beef cows was an Aberdeen Angus from T&M Halhead, Prest Hutton hut achieving £1651, with others at £1584. Dairy cows sold to a top of 224.5p/kg for a Fleckvieh from EW&R Towers, Hornby who sold Montbeliardes at 214.5p/kg. Holstien Friesians sold to 209.5p/kg from Cote Farm Partnership, Nether Kellet. Other heavy well fleshed dairy cows were generally 170p/kg to 185p/kg, with mediums 150p/kg to 165p/kg and the leaner sorts 125p/kg to 145p/kg. Top grossing dairy cow was a Montbeliarde from A&FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel achieving £1419, who sold others at £1406 with Holstein Friesians to £1388 from RH&RA Fawcett, Burton.

OTM beef heifers sold to 246.5p/kg and £1730 for a British Blue x from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale with dairy heifers selling to 229.5p/kg and £1388 from RH&RA Fawcett, Burton.

OTM steers sold to 229.5 p/kg and £1652 for an Aberdeen Angus x from A Kirkby & Co, Pilling who also sold Holstein Friesian at 224.5p/kg, with others achieving £1470 from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale. Cull bulls sold to 209.5p/kg for an Aberdeen Angus from J Holt, Hambleton with Holstiein Friesians selling to £1565 from JB&C Lamb, Thurnham.
