J36 Rural Auction Centre: General Sale of Horses, Ponies & Donkeys. Saturday 16th November 2024.

The Autumn sale of all classes of horses, ponies and donkeys held at North West Auctions J36, topped three times at 5000gns. First was for a quality 4 year old grey IDx Sports Horse mare from A Roberts, followed by a beautifully presented, show quality, ride and drive 5 year old piebald cob gelding and a 5 year old roan cob mare in-foal to G&R Topper both from G & R Dunn. Youngsters topped at 4600gns for Rocky, a skewbald 3 year old Shire x cob gelding to make 17hh from Nicola Napier, a piebald yearling native cob, Paintball Fancy that sold to 3200gns and the Paintball Stud also sold other youngsters at 2000gns twice as part of their stud reduction. A & SG Butterfield of the Hermits Stud sold Hermits In the Pink a 13.3hh 3 year old traditional cob filly at 2700gns, a grey yearling cob colt to make 15.2hh from D Cummings sold at 2100gns and Luca a 3 year old 15.3hh gelding from Mr Pedley of Portpatrick sold at 2500gns.

A 16.2hh, well hunted 15 year old ID mare sold at 3800gns, with a 2 year old Clydesdale x Dales gelding selling at 3600gns and a pure Section A Dales gelding selling at 2400gns, both from the Westwick Stud.

Luneside Belle of the Ball, a 3 year old 14.2hh skewbald cob filly sold for 2300gns whilst Mr Wilson sold 16 palomino and cremello cob foals and yearlings to 2500gns, 2300gns, 1800 and 1500gns. Regular consignor I Fleming from Ulverston sold Newland Green Peaches, a 12 year old 14hh cob mare at 3000gns as part of his stud reduction.

Shetlands topped at 1600gns for an unregistered filly foal from Mrs S Winter who also sold others at 1400 and 1200gns for a spotted Shetland filly and colt foal, closely followed by the tiny, fully registered Lowmill Buttermere selling at 1300gns from R Grieveson.

Donkeys sold to a top of 500gns for a Jenny with others at 400gns and 350gns. The next general sale of horses, ponies and donkeys is Saturday 26th April 2025.

Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Prime Lambs & Cast Sheep. Monday 18th November 2024.

Prime Lambs

Prime lambs sold to a top of £169 for Texel cross from KA Purtill, Wigan with others at £163 from CD&HL Mason, Caton. Other well finished heavy weight lambs were generally £145 to £155. The best standard weights were £128 to £136, with lighter weight lambs £110 to £118. Mule and Masham’s sold to a top price of £136 with other heavier pens £128 to £135.

Topping the market at 360p/kg was KA Purtill, Wigan with other pure and 3/4 bred lambs 320p/kg to 345p/kg. First cross lambs were generally 290p/kg to 305p/kg, depending on quality. Grass finished lambs were 280p/kg to 295p/kg. Mules sold to 281p/kg, with others generally 272p/kg to 280p/kg and lighter weight lambs 290p/kg to 310p/kg.

Texel cross ewes sold to £199 from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof with heavier first cross ewes £130 to £150, medium ewes were £105 to £120. Mules sold to £147 from A Thompson, Woodplumpton with other heavier pens £130 to £140. Meated mediums were £105 to £120, with light weight and leaner ewes generally £80 to £95. Prime Lambs

Onwards and Upwards

A lesser more weathered show of lambs, met an increased pence per kilo average of 302p/kg, highlighting the over growing demand for sheep at J36.

Lambs topped at £196 for a big single Texel from A Clark & Johnson, Windermere. Other Texels sold to £183 from Messrs Hodgson, Ulverston with Charollais lambs topping at £174 for a pen of four from Messrs Crowe, Barrow in Furness. 44kg Texels from Messrs Boyren, Ulverston achieved 364p/kg while KA Purtill, Wigan sold a pen of four to 350p/kg. Lighter lambs at 39kg sold to 339p/kg from Messrs Burrow, Storth while lighter Beltexs at 37kg reached 336p/kg from J Clarke & Sons, Carnforth.

Cast Sheep

Vendors having a real clear out today, with over half the entry being hard worked hill ewes, the sale however averaged a very respectable £78.

Very few strong ewes forward today but those that were sold to £222 for pure Texels. First cross ewes to £165 for Texel and Suffolk cross. Medium crossbred ewes were £120 to £145, with lighter weights £90 to £110. Strongest Mules sold to £152 with others £140 to £150, mediums were £105 to £128 and leaner sorts £90 to £102. Pure hill ewes saw Cheviots sell to £94, Swaledales £94, SBF £88, Rough Fells £85, Dalesbred £82 and Herdwicks £73.

Medium horned ewes were nicely £65 to £75, with leaner and lighter weights £38 to £50.

Freezing weather outside but a red-hot trade inside at the popular fortnightly sale at NWA J36. Buyers traveling from all four corners of the UK, keen to secure stock. All classes and types continue to sell to the hight rates of recent weeks. Todays sale comprised of a large proportion of hill and end of run lambs, which averaged a respectable £104.41. The sale peaked at £149 for a pen of Beltex cross lambs from M Allen, Carnforth. Other pens of better end Continental cross lambs were regularly £128 to £140, mediums £110 to £122 and longer keep sorts £95 to £102. Suffolks sold to £136 from J&R Bell, Crook with Charollais to £128 from AC&C Thexton, Ulverston, Dutch Spotted £128 from JR Park, Rusland. Hill bred lambs saw a ring full of SBF sell to £125 from the Isle of Man. Mules sold to £124 from J&SE Woof, Dent with other large pen fulls of stronger Mules £110 to £118. Teeswater gimmer lambs sold to £121, Rough Fells to £119 from PE Allen, Ings, Swaledale to £117 Isle of Man, Masham’s to £114 and Herdwicks to £110 from Isle of Man. Well grown level pens of horned lambs were £65 to £80, medium £55 to £62, with only the smallest backwards lambs £30 to £40.

Calves & Weanlings

Fewer calves about this week, mainly due to the weather, however the ones sold met a fast trade. Rearing bull calves sold to £550 for a British Blue bull from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale with others to £515 and £490 for Aberdeen Angus cross from J&G Thornley, Kirkham. Only a handful of real youngsters forward, with these selling to £250 for a three week old Hereford cross from MJ&H Atkinson, Quernmore. Weaned bulls sold to £620 for a British Blue from MH&AR Robinson, Kendal with Simmentals from this home £540.

Heifer calves a nice trade selling to £430 for British Blues from regulars JP&C Robson, Brock with other British Blues to £395 twice from this home. Aberdeen Angus cross sold to £400 from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale and Herefords to £180 at eighteen days old from MJ&H Atkinson, Quernmore. A good show of weaned heifers forward sold to £640 for a trio of British Blues from PS&H Eckersley, Mellor with Aberdeen Angus cross close behind at £630 from Mason Birkland Barrow, Over Kellett. Store Cattle

Lancaster’s weekly sale of store cattle saw trade go up not one but three gears, as buyers compete to keep their pens full, as the fat trade gets to decent returns. A few less about today with the weather playing havoc for vendors getting out of frozen farmyards and roads.

Those that did get to Lancaster saw a blistering trade from start to finish, top of the leader board today was K&DE Woodhouse, Ellel with an Aberdeen Angus steer at £2120, with others from this good home at £2000 (x3). Other Angus steers achieved £1940 for a pair from BW&G Robinson, Carnforth. K&DE Woodhouse, Ellel continued their good days trading with British Blue steers to £2100, £2040 and £2000 (x3), with this terrific run of cattle averaging £2029. Other well fleshed British Blues sold to

£1940 for a pair from JH Bland & Sons, Levens with J&S Winstanley, Clifton at £1920. Younger British Blue steers were very much in demand, and saw a pen of four sixteen month olds at £1670 from TH Wensley, Kirkham. Limousin steers achieved £1840 from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse who also sold Friesian steers to £1620 for a pair, with other Friesian steers around the £1500 mark. Fleckvieh bred steers from MJ Waller, Lupton achieved £1700. Regular Lancaster vendor AJ&D Knowles, Kendal saw his Charolais steers achieve £1520. Herefords sold to £1580 for a pair from DH&M Kellet & Sons, Thurnham. All steers forward averaged £1604.

No let up in trade for store heifers, with these averaging £1422. Hitting the top spot today was ID Bailey, Preston who sold a Simmental heifer to £1860. Local supporter G Sagar & Son, Caton sold a pen of four Aberdeen Angus achieving £1740, with Pilling Hall at the same price for a single Angus. Other Angus heifers achieved £1640 from ID Bailey, Preston for a pair, who also sold Herefords to £1520. British Blue heifers saw R Capstick & Son, Ingleton roar past the £1700 mark at £1720 for a trio, with other from this same good home at £1680. As with the steers, younger heifers were sought after, with TH Wensley & Son, Kirkham selling sixteen month old British Blues to £1520.

OTM Cattle

OTM trade continues to please vendors here at Lancaster, top pence per kilo today being an OTM steer from JC Prickett, Mewith reaching 319.5p/kg. OTM heifers topped at 269.5p/kg for a Black and White from J&G Thornley, Kirkham. It was a British Friesian that topped the cows this week at 264.5p/kg, this coming from GA&A Atkinson, Cantsfield. Good meated cows were all the top side of 200p/kg, with more medium sorts 175p/kg upwards. Only hard worked cows were less.

Top grossing price this week was a Limousin cast bull from TE JS & SA Carruthers, Underbarrow achieving £1974.49 (234.5p/kg), with heifers to £1724.80 from J&G Thornley, Kirkham and cows to £1713.96 from GA&A Atkinson, Cantsfield. Any amount of both sucklers and dairy cows broke the £1500 barrier.
