The 23rd Annual Whiteley Hey Production Sale on behalf of Mr Paul Slater was held at North West Auctions J36 in conjunction with Darlington Farmers Auction Mart on Monday 19th August 2024. Forward were 599 head comprising of…

175 Shearling Rams sold to 6000 Guineas

78 Warranted Ewes sold to £700

165 Gimmer Shearlings sold to £480

181 Gimmer Lambs sold to £390

A superb run of sheep as always from Whiteley Hey attracted a host of returning customers, along with many new faces all willing to bid freely for the Whiteley Hey genetics. The prime sheep reports from across the country will undoubtedly be filled with buyers who were in attendance today, as these phenomenal sheep tick all the boxes for both breeders and butchers alike. Sheep headed away to over one hundred buyers, spanning from the East Coast to the West, Castle Douglas in the North, not to mention a strong Welsh contingency ringside.

The superstar of the day was Lot 50, the terrific pure Texel shearling tup featured on the cover of the catalogue, bred from a favourite flock ewe by the £29k Garngour Awesome this lad is himself sired by the £20k Teiglum Dirty Harry and he duly sold for 6000 guineas to A & H C Smith, Crumhaughill Farm, Hawick.

A stunning crossbred tup claimed the next highest price of 3800 guineas; a Beltex cross Texel by a Tiree tup from Archie MacLean headed back to Belper with Ben Jones of Alton Manor Farm.

Two tups sold for 3000 guineas on the day, as a fabulous pure Texel sired by Teiglum Crackerjack out of a Scrogtonhead bred ewe headed away with W P Hughes & Son, Fferamuchaf, Llanddeusant. Whilst many people’s pick of the day, a meat machine of a Charollais cross Beltex heads back with F Gargett, Westwick Farm, Barnard Castle.

Nine further tups sold at two thousand plus, with a stunning seventeen more between fifteen hundred and two thousand; all this left the tup averages up a fantastic £198 on the year, to level at £1304 per head.

Earlier in the day a wonderful display of naturally done females sold to an eager ringside of buyers, as the ewe lambs averaged £204 (+£14), the shearling ewes averaged £308 (+£5) and the older ewes enjoyed the trade of the day levelling at £400 (+£80).

Top call for the females went to a stunning pair of two shear Beltex ewes by a Blackjack sire which sold for £700 to Ellis Bros, Cragg House Farm, Ilkley; Texel’s followed at £550 £500 and £480 with the top call for Charollais £480.

Texel’s topped the shearling ewes selling at £480, £460 and £440. As they did in the ewe lambs with leading prices of £390, £340 and £330.

Appreciation from all involved goes to the sponsors of the sale Vivers Scotlamb, Trident, Eden Farm Supplies, Carrs Billington, Agri Lloyd, Osmonds and Rumenco. Huge credit must go to the whole team at Whiteley Hey for their organisation and preparation of this fabulous team of rams and females.
