J36 Rural Auction Centre: General Sale of Horses, Ponies & Donkeys, Saturday 18th November 2023. North West Auctions held its annual autumn sale of horses, ponies and donkeys on Saturday 18th November. With an entry of just under 300 and a ring packed full of people, led to an excellent day’s trade with a good atmosphere leaving vendors and buyers happy. The sale topped overall at 2700 guineas for Highfield Dorothy, a smart 4 year old cob mare from Mr K Anderson, who made the long journey down to the West Midlands. A matching pair of miniature spotted ponies from Cormac Vallely, Northern Ireland, sold as a pair for 2500gns. A 12yr old black cob gelding from Mr J Stewart sold to 2350gns, D Kay sold a 2 year old filly at 2300gns and a 5 year old at 2000gns. The Hermits Stud sold their very smart typey cobs well at 2000gns, 1600gns, 1500gns and 1300gns. Lowmill Custard Cream, a 2 year old cob filly from Craig Eland sold at 2050gns. Welsh ponies topped at 2100gns for a 12 year old Section B gelding and 2000gns for Llynhelyg Carwyn a 9 year old Welsh part bred. Fwrog Rihanna, a Section D yearling filly sold at 900gns and Gayan Guto a 3 year registered Welsh Section A gelding sold for 700gns. Donkeys sold at 480gns for a 5 year old Jenny, 280gns for a yearling gelding and 280gns for a 10 year old gelding from N Harrison and 280gns and 220gns for 3 year old Jacks from G & M Rudd. Shetland ponies topped at 700gns for Lunespring Zara a registered 9 year old mini Shetland mare from the Richardson family who sold others at 420, 400, 380 and 350gns for colt and filly foals. The top priced foal was 1900gns for a very smart black Friesian x cob filly from Paul Wheeler, Wharton Ella a cob x Welsh Section D filly from M Metcalfe sold for 1200gns, followed by G&R Trigger a grey roan cob colt from G&R Dunn who went on to sell for 1150 gns and Luneside Dancing Queen, a cob filly from D Gough, sold at 1000gns. Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep, Monday 20th November 2023. Prime Lambs NWA Lancaster saw 743 prime lambs forward with an overall market averaged 252.4p/kg, buyers showing keenest interest in well finished fed lambs with lambs lacking finish a more cautious trade. Heavy weight lambs sold to £142.50 for Texel cross form C Pickering, Longridge with others at £138 from KA Purtill, Wigan. Others were regularly selling at £122 to £130, depending on breed and quality. Standard weight lambs sold to £128 for Texels from A Birchall, Dolphinholme with others at £120.50 from JM&HM France & Son, Littledale. Light weight lambs sold to £103 for Texel cross from T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping with others at £98 from M&L Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale. Heavy weight Cheviot Mules sold to £128.50 for a ring full from P Whitton & Son, Burneside with Mashams to £118 from S&J France, Over Wyresdale, North Country Mules to £117 from P Whitton & Son, Burneside with others at £114 from B&SE Carter, Ellel. Best bred lambs sold to 290p/kg for Texels from A Birchall, Dolphinholme who sold others at 288p/kg. Others achieved 286p/kg from B&SE Carter, Ellel and 280p/kg from AG Butler, Hambleton. Well finished Continental bred lambs were generally 255p/kg to 270p/kg, with medium finished 240p/kg to 265p/kg depending on quality and type. Hill bred lambs sold to

Another full market saw over 2200 prime sheep forward selling to a trade continuing to increase week on week. Prime Lambs Prime lambs saw an overall market average of 255p/kg for lambs ranging from 29kg to 64kg. Heavy weight lambs continue to be well sort after at NWA J36. This week selling to £158 on two occasions for Texel cross lambs from TMW&H Hodgson, Nibthwaite, with others at £156 from J&O Galbraith & Son, Endmoor, BJ Bowness, Kendal. Other were regularly £138 to £145. Standard weight lambs sold to £137 for Beltex cross from IOM, with others at £132 for Texel cross from BHM&S Boyren, Colton with others at £130 from Robyn Allen, Ings and £128 from D Black, Milnthorpe. Light weight lambs sold to £104.50 for Texel cross from WS Burrow Ltd, Carnforth with others at £104 for Texel cross from RG&L Potter, Tebay and MW&MR Black, Staveley. The best pure and heavy ewes sold to £160 from IOM with others nicely £130 to £135. Other heavy well fleshed first cross ewes were regularly £110 to £120. Other well bred beef cows were 185p/kg to 205p/kg, with first cross cattle suitable for finishing 160p/kg to 180p/kg. Top grossing beef cow was a Charolais from E&M Fairhurst, Austwick achieving £1719. Heavy well fleshed dairy cows sold to 179.5p/kg for a Fleckvieh from B&AC Barnes, Middleton with Montbeliarde at 169.5p/kg from WR&CM Lawrenson, Winmarleigh.
