Breeding Ewes, Shearling & Gimmer Lambs
The annual lakeland fair sale of breeding sheep once again attracted buyers from far and wide attracted by the variety of sheep on offer- something for everyone.
¾ bred continental ewes sold to £190 with others £160-£180, first cross ewes to £150 with others £120-£140. Mule Shearlings sold to £150 on several occasions with farming sorts £120-£140. Mule ewes sold to £155 with most £115-£130. Hill ewes sold to £150 for Cheviots, £150 for Herdwicks, £138 for Rough Fells and Swaledales to £120. Gimmer Lambs sold to £175 for Pure Texels, £135 for Zwartbles, £130 for Suffolk x, £125 for Mules, £108 for Swaledales, £94 for Rough Fell, £83 for Herdwicks, £80 for Gritstones and £80 for Cheviots.
With many buyers leaving unable to fill trailers we have made the decision to hold an additional sale for all classes of Breeding Sheep on Thursday 7th November at 10am prior to the sale of store lambs. Please advise of entries.

Breeding Rams
Lakeland Fair ram sale saw an entry of all breeds sell to a top of £1400 The sale commenced with Swaledales, these selling to £500 from Forest Hall Farms with others to £450 from JA Alderson following the Swaledales was Cheviots with trade sharp and these were well sought after. Top price was £550 from KO Stones with others from this home at £520, John Swift also reached £520, and TW Bell achieved £500. Other hill bred tups sold to £300 for Herdwick and £220 for Rough Fell. Blue Faced Leicester were very easily sold, selling to £1150 from DE & J Waine with others from this home next at £1000. Others sold to £750 from T & CM Kelsall and £650 from RI Dixon. Finally, was all continental and terminal rams where the best end tups achieved maximum returns. Sue Cuncliffe sold to the top price of the sale at £1400 for Texel with others to £1000 from the same home. A nice show of ram lambs sold to £800 for Texel from R Wilson. Suffolks to £750 for shearlings from ID & HJ Rawlinson with Blue Texel from this home at the same price.

Prime Lambs
The special show for young handlers was kindly judged by Wendy Stamper and Cheralyn Henderson, who we thank for their time. The best young handler rosette was awarded to Lilly Drinkall showing a Texel lambs with second prize going to Adam Ayrton exhibiting his Mule and third prize going to Henry Swarbrick. All young handlers must be congratulated for presenting a fantastic show of lambs to such a high standard.

An entry of just short of 500 lambs were forward today, with a much weathered entry of lambs forward, however a pleasing average of 280p/kg was achieved. Well bred and hard fed lambs continue to sell to the keenest demand, selling to 355p/kg and £154. Others were regularly 295p/kg to 320p/kg and £135 to £145. The best grass finished lambs sold at 265p/kg to 275p/kg, with many leaner under finished lambs a more cautious trade, ranging from 240p/kg to 255p/kg, and perhaps better suited to the current buoyant store market. Several pens of lighter weight lambs forward with the best finished to 308p/kg and £117, with others 285p/kg to 295p/kg, proving they are well finished.

Prime Lambs
The market saw all pens full today, with all lambs forward today selling to an SQQ of 274p/kg. The sale peaked at 315p/kg for Texel cross from L Beck, Haversham with other well finished ¾ and pure bred lambs 295p/kg to 310p/kg. The best first cross lambs were 275p/kg to 295p/kg, with grass finished lambs 260p/kg to 275p/kg. Under finished lambs met buyers resistance. Heavy weight lambs sold to £164 from L McCarrick, Chorley with others £142 to £158. The best finished standard weights lambs were £125 to £135, with light weight lambs to £114. Hill bred lambs are coming forward in greater number, with Cheviot to £129, Mules to £128. Other pens of heavier weight Mules were £115 to £122. Vendors are encouraged feeding their lambs, to encourage maximum returns from buyers.

706 cull ewes forward with today’s sale perhaps being the leanest and plainest entry this season. A real shortage of the best heavy ewes, of those few today sold to a top of £220 for a Texel cross from L McCarrick, Chorley. Other heavy first cross ewes were generally £140 to £165 with mediums £118 to £135 and the leaner lighter weights £80 to £100. Several grazing orders ring side for these types. Cheviot Mules sold to £158, North Country Mules to £132, Lleyn £128, Cheviots £104, Gritstones £85, Rough Fells £77 and Swaledales £71.
Just a handful of rams today which saw mediums continental to £150 and hill rams to £110 for Herdwicks.

Mighty trade from the first to the last!
The Junction 36 Ambleside sale of store lambs was a great success with all shapes, breeds and sizes met with a highly attentive ringside of buyers throughout. An impressive overall average of £86.31 was achieved, for 6200 sheep including many Swaledales, Herdwick and even the odd Scotch Black Face.
Texel lambs hit £129 for a pen of seven from L Beck, Heversham. Suffolk sold to £122 from Messrs Thompson, Grange Over Sands. Mules sold to a top of £116 for a belter from RJS & DM Addison, Penrith.

Highest priced pen of thirty or more continentals was jointly won by CI Briggs, Ambleside and SJ&NS Wood, Windermere selling Texels at £110. Taking the Mule award was R Lawrence, Grange Over Sands who sold his pen to £107. The pure hill bred award was won by MB Meredith, Coniston selling Cheviots to £89.

Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Calves, OTM's, Stirks & Store Cattle. Friday 25th October 2024.
Calves & Weanlings
Lancasters weekly sale of calves and stirks saw seventy head through the ring under the watchful eye of Will Rogerson, a good attendance of buyers saw all cattle sell to their maximum potential.
Young calves started the day with Pickervance Farms, Kirkham consignment of six to eight week olds topping today at £380 for a seven week old Aberdeen Angus bull calf, with a four week old Angus heifer at £350. Other younger calves from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe saw Angus bulls to £365 and £350. Dairy breds from JE&SM Seedall, Mellor saw their best month old Shorthorns to £170 for bulls and £165 for heifers at the same age.
Stronger weaned calves today were very much sort after, and more numbers are required every week to satisfy demand.
Topping the trade today their usual trailer load of quality calves was J&G Thornley, Kirkham with a three month old Charolais bull calf at £600 with others to £580. British Blue bulls from the same good home were £490. G&ME Woodhouse & Sons, Lancaster achieved £475 also for British Blue bulls, with JP&C Robson, Claughton on Brock not far behind at £470 and £460 for two month olds. Heifer calves topped at £440 for British Blues from G&ME Woodhouse & Son, Lancaster with other Blues to £415 from J&G Thornley, Kirkham.
Older stirks at six to eight months saw Angus steers to £770 from JE&J Pye & Son, Quernmore with others from the same good home at £735. Angus heifers sold to £700 from JP&C Robson, Claughton on Brock. Other Angus heifers were around the mid six hundreds. Eight month old bulls today saw British Blues to £800 from TD&G Gardner, Great Eccleston with Friesians from the same home to £730.

Store Cattle & Stirks
The weekly sale of store cattle today would see more numbers forward and a better show of cattle than previous weeks. Aberdeen Angus steers from MJ Shepherd, Kirkby Lonsdale hit the top spot this week with a pair to £1880. Other Aberdeen Angus steers sold to £1760 from TC Whiteside & Son, Pilling for a pen of four. Plenty of other twenty four month old Angus steers were around the £1700 mark. British Blue steers from H Birkett & Sons, Overton sold to £1780 with other British Blue steers from FE&CM Robinson, Milnthorpe to £1760. Other British Blue steers were around the £1720. H Birkett & Son continued his good days trading with Montbeliarde steers to £1640 and Fleckviehs from the same home also to £1640. Herefords sold to the same price from CB Heald, Ingleton with others to £1620 from J Lamb, Old Glasson. Bazadaise from JC Prickett, Mewith achieved £1620. Simmental steers sold to £1780 from JC Prickett, Mewith.
Heifer stores were well in demand today, topping at £1880 for a very stylish twenty four month old Limousin from TE, JS & SA Carruthers, Underbarrow. JD&GM Bracken, Garstang saw his Charolais heifers to £1780, who also had a pair of British Blues to £1620. Aberdeen Angus heifers sold to £1650 from CD&HL Mason, Caton with plenty of other Angus heifers around the £1500 mark. Hereford sold to £1560 from JB Moore, Grange Over Sands.
Today saw the monthly sale of stirks, with buyers eager to replace sold stores. R&J Parkinson, Preesall made top spot in this section with an eight month old Limousin steer stirk to £1160. Friesian steers sold to £790 for a trio from R&J Parkinson, Preesall who also sold Angus heifers to £710.
Heifer stirks saw D&J Hay, Cockerham sell Limousins to £1000. British Blues sold to £920 from JE&J Pye, Quernmore.

OTM Cattle
The weekly sale of OTM cattle saw less numbers about this week and a poorer show of cattle on offer, reflecting the lower overall average of 159p/kg.
OTM heifers sold to £1908 or 294.5p/kg from AJ&DA Wilkinson, Out Rawcliffe. Friesian heifers sold to 254.5p/kg or £1654 from L Parson & Sons, Levens. Other continental heifers sold to 264.5p/kg, with Agnus OTM heifers to 244.5p/kg from JW&DL Park, Ellel.
Cast steers sold to 279.5p/kg for a Limousin and 269.5p/kg for a British Blue.
As represented earlier, a poor entry of fleshy cows, anything with meat and conformation easily sold. TE, JS & SA Carruthers, Underbarrow sold to £1381 or 229.5p/kg for a Limousin. Friesian cows sold to 224.5p/kg from W&S Airey, Carnforth and £1370 from Kelsall & Wood, Scotforth. Just one cast bull in today from W stamper, Chipping, which sold to £1586 or 179.5p/kg for a Hereford.
