Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Spring Lambs, Prime Hoggs, Cast Sheep & Sheep with Lambs at Foot. Monday 22nd April 2024.
Spring Lambs
500 sheep came through the gates this morning, cracking off with spring lambs. Just a handful of spring lambs were forward with S Wilson & Son, Scotforth topping at £175 on four occasions for Dorsets. Suffolks from G&D Ball, Great Eccleston achieved £165.
More spring lambs are required next week to fulfil buyers orders.

Prime Hoggs
A larger show of hoggs were forward on the week, with many vendors on their last round ups, which reflects in the overall average of 360p/kg. The sale topped at 430p/kg for a pair of Beltex hoggs from AG Butler, Hambleton. S Rossall, Over Wyresdale hit the headlines today achieving £236 on three occasions for heavy quality hoggs. JW Cornall, Bleasdale also sold heavy Texels to £214. A trailer load of well fed hoggs from F&SG Sanderson, Preston saw their best Mules to £197 with Mashams to £190 from T&E Wright, Wray.
Handy weighted hoggs from Barker Farms, Cockerham saw Cheviots to £171. Herdwicks sold to £134 from LA Bradshaw, Stalmine.

Cast ewes and rams saw no let up in trade with Suffolks from G Riley, Bolton Le Sands to £208. Other Suffolks sold to £184 from J Gardner, Bay Horse. S Wilson & Son, Scotforth sold Cheviot Mules to £198 and Texels to £172. The best big Mules sold to £154 from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe with others to £152 from JE&J Pye, Quernmore. Swaledales ewes sold to £104 from Ivan Slater, Garstang. Dalebreds from T&D Wright, Wray sold to £88.
Just a handful of cast rams today, which sold to £146 from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe for a Texel.

Sheep with Lambs at Foot
Ewes with lambs saw a mixed entry of mainly older ewes with younger lambs forward today. The sale topped at £265 for Texel cross ewes with twin Texel lambs from W Pinder, Clitheroe. Mules with twins from the same good home sold to £235. Aged Texel ewes with single Texel lambs sold to £200 from J Gardner, Bay Horse. Other aged single Texels ewes sold to £195 from G Hargreaves, Lancaster. More ewes and lambs required next week with buyers today going home with empty trailers.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Pigs. Weekly Sale of Sheep with Lambs at Foot, Spring Lambs, Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep, Tuesday 23rd April 2024.
Pigs
A much-reduced entry of prime pigs sold to an increased crown of buyers and sold to the strongest trade for several sales. The best prime pigs were regularly £215 to £245, with other lighter weighs £155 to £180. The best finished prime pigs were 175p/kg to 210p/kg, with an overall average of 169p/kg. A single cull sow sold to £150 and 63p/kg. The largest entry of store and weaner pigs this year saw store gilts sell to £90, with others at £72. Weaners sold to £45, with others generally £25 to £30.
Spring Lambs
A small entry of spring lambs were forward, with all buyers keen to purchase. The sale topped at £215 for Texel cross lambs from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe with others from the same home at £204. More lambs are now required on a weekly basis.

Prime Hoggs
As seen nationally the trade for hoggs was a little less, with many vendors last draws forward and an overall market averaged of 365p/kg achieved. Heavy hoggs sold to £246 for Texels from M Stringman, Preston with others regularly £220 to £230. Smart bred hoggs sold to £224 from N Barker, Burton in Kendal or 470p/kg from GM&A Jackson, Little Eccleston. Thirty pens sold over £200. A large show of hill bred hoggs were forward with Cheviots to £192 from SH&LE Birkett, Nether Kellet with other pens of Cheviots to £190 from HR&KA Hodgson, Barbon. A ring full of 44kg Cheviots sold to £182 from GM&A Jackson, Little Eccleston with pens of Scotch Black Face to £143 from the same good home. Rough Fells sold to £169 from SM Watson, Ulverston. Pens of Mules sold to £167 from TW Wilson, Flookburgh.

An entry of 443 genuine farmer cull ewes sold to an overall averaged of £112, with two thirds of the sale being leaner hill bred ewes. The best Continental ewes sold to £275 for Texels with Hampshires at £225. Other medium pure ewes were generally £190 to £220. The best end first cross ewes sold to £212 for Texel cross and £198 for Suffolk cross with others regularly £160 to £180. Medium meated ewes were £140 to £160, with the smaller meated end £110 to £125. Mules sold to £168, with others at £166 and £164. Cheviot Mules sold to £154 and £148. Heavy Mules were regularly £140 to £155, with strong mediums £118 to £130. Pure hill ewes sold to £154 for Cheviots with Lonks to £138, Rough Fells £130, Swaledale £124 and Herdwicks £116. Meaty medium sized hill ewes were generally £85 to £100, with smallest leaner end £55 to £70.
Billy goats sold to £135, with yearling goats to £120.
Cull rams sold to £215 for BFL’s with other stronger end rams £170 to £210, medium types were £140 to £175, with smaller leaner hill bred rams £100 to £120.

Sheep with Lambs at Foot
The largest show of breeding sheep forward so far this season, with 580 lives put before our busy ringside of local and travelled buyers, ensuring a strong trade was seen for all. A pen of Mule shearlings with Texel lambs from
G&KM Atkinson, Colby sold to £315 twice with elevens Texel shearlings with Beltex cross single lambs from R Allison & Son, Kirkby Stephen selling to £275. Aged Texel ewes with Beltex cross lambs sold to £302 from JC&E Pedley & Son, Kirkby Stephen. Three crop Mule ewes with Texel twins sold to £288 from WH&G Hodgson, Patton. More hoggs and lambs were on offer today with Mule hoggs with Suffolk lambs selling to £218 from RC Wharton & Son, Drybeck.

NWA Lancaster sold 503 head of cattle at its popular weekly sale, with trade across all sale rings continuing the upwards trend.
Calves & Weanlings
Rearing calves sold to £445 for an Aberdeen Angus cross from T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping who also sold British Blues to £400. Younger beef bulls sold to £375 for British Blue cross from MH&AR Robinson, Kendal and £355 from Walmsley Beef, Cockerham. Mediums beef bulls were generally £300 to £370, with younger rearers £220 to £280. Dairy bulls sold to £140 for a Holstein Friesian. Heifer calves sold to £355 for a British Blue cross from Walmsley Beef, Cockerham who sold other to £320. Other younger beef heifers were generally £220 to £280, with the very smallest £160 to £200. A large entry of 70 reared and weaned calves were greeted by a large crowd of buyers, which saw Aberdeen Angus cross bulls sold to £800 from AW&AM Park, Ellel with Hereford cross to £750 from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green and British Blue cross £730 from FW Rhodes & Son, Ellel. Steers sold to £740 for British Blue cross from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green with other at £720 from J&CG Redmayne, Samlesbury and others £680 from I Slater, Claughton on Brock. Recently weaned Aberdeen Angus bulls sold to £515, with others regularly £470 to £500. Heifers sold to £720 for a British Blue cross from AW&AM Park & Sons, Ellel who also sold Aberdeen Angus cross at £700. British Blues sold to £680 from RW Rhodes & Son, Ellel. Feeding bulls sold to £1700 from WR&CM Lawrenson, Winmarleigh. Steers sold to £1900 for a pair of Limousins from H Chapman & Son, Middleton who sold others at £1790. Other strong steers were £1750 to £1700. Dairy bred steers achieved £1530 for Fleckviehs from EJ Hodgson & Son, Lambrigg who also sold Black and Whites at £1440.
Heifers sold to £1700 for a pair of Aberdeen Angus cross from F&SG Sanderson, Woodplumpton with others at £1680 from A&P Hodgkinson, Stalmine. Well grown heifer sold to £1400 to £1600.
A keen interest in younger stores saw Charolais cross to £1380 from P&ME Higginson, Pilling with British Blue cross to £1380 from I Slater, Claughton on Brock, with others £1200 to £1350.
Younger heifers sold to £1240 for Aberdeen Angus cross from Throstle Nest Farms, Pilling with others generally £1100 to £1200.
The monthly sale of stirks saw yearling British Blue steers sell to £1170 from JE&J Pye, Quernmore. Hereford cross sold to £1000 from MJ &LC Lund, Quernmore with other nine to twelve month olds regularly £900 to £1000, with younger steers £700 to £850.
Heifer stirks sold to £1160 for Limousin cross from I Atkinson & Son, Warton with other stronger heifers £880 to £950. Younger summering heifers were £680 to £750.

Beef cows sold to 229.5p/kg for a Limousin cross from A Prickett, Farleton and a British Blue from T&D Wright, Roeburndale. Top grossing being an Aberdeen Angus cross from R&B Parker, Killington achieving £1748. Dairy
cows sold to 219p/kg for a Montbeliarde from A&FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel. Meated dairy cows were 190p/kg to 200p/kg, mediums sorts 170p/kg to 185p/kg with leaner parlour types 130p/kg to 150p/kg. Top grossing being a Holstein Friesian from AW&AM Park & Sons, Ellel at £1645 with other at £1637 from PW&JM Norris & Son, Hornby. All cull cows forward averaged 185p/kg.
OTM heifers sold to 269p/kg for a Limousin from T&D Wright, Roeburndale with other beef heifers at £1595 for an Aberdeen Angus from CM&CA Jackson, Caton. Dairy heifers sold to 259.5p/kg and £1717 for a Montbeliarde from A&FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel.
Beef steers sold to 269p/kg for a British Blue cross from A Kirkby & Co, Pilling with a Longhorn from F&SG Sanderson & Son, Woodplumpton achieving £2120. Dairy steers sold to 244p/kg and £2012 from F&GS Sanderson & Son, Woodplumpton.
