Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs & Cast Sheep, Monday 22nd July 2024.
Prime Lambs
An increased number of both stock and buyers were around the ring, ensured Lancaster market had a pleasing trade for all goods sold. An overall market average of 301p/kg was achieved. The sale sold to £160 for Texel lambs from R&DL Cornthwaite, Nateby with Beltexs to £157 from J Gardner, Bay Horse and Charollais to £156 from A&E Clarkson, Thurnham. Best bred lambs saw Beltexs to 355p/kg from D&D Huddleston, Wray with other pens to 350p/kg from J Gardner, Bay Horse. The best end lambs were regularly 330p/kg to 340p/kg, with good meated commercial bred lambs regularly 310p/kg to 315p/kg, and heavy bred lambs regularly north of 300p/kg. The first of the horned bred lambs were forward, with 41kg Swaledales to £112 from RH&C Ayrton, Abbeystead.

Cast Sheep
A pleasing show of 130 cast sheep were forward, with all selling to a pleasing trade, however the edge would have been off compared to previous weeks. Texels sold to £210 from R Collinge & Son, Kirkham with Beltex to £171 from R&DL Cornthwaite, Nateby. The best end pure bred ewes were £165 plus. Heavy Mules sold to £147 from R&DL Cornthwaite, Nateby with Cheviot Mules to £139 from R Doran, Winmarleigh, with heavy Mules regularly £125 to £135. Hill ewes saw pure Cheviots to £127 from R Doran, Winmarleigh with Swaledeles to £97 from M&L Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale. Please note that buyers are cautious over sheep in the wool, with clipped ewes seeing financial benefit.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Pigs, Prime Lambs & Cast Sheep, Tuesday 27th July 2024. Pigs
An entry of 50 prime, store and breeding pigs were forward, with once again prime pigs selling to a firm trade through out. Top price of the day was £238 for a prime hogg from JM Navesey, Darwen, with others from this home selling to £235 on an additional three occasions. Regular supporter J Stott, Kendal sold gilts at £230. Prime boars sold to £160 on four occasions from C Barr, Coniston, with many boars around the £150 mark. JE Atkinson, Nibthwaite topped the store pigs at £98 for five with eight more recently weaned sorts from P Martin, Balderdale selling at £70.
Prime Lambs
The weekly sale of 1100 lambs, saw lambs forward ranging from 28kg to 64kg, with a pleasing average of 303p/kg achieved. Heavy lambs were once again adding up nicely here at Junction 36 with Texels to £180 from RS&BA Harker, Holme, Suffolks £178 from M&RW Stirzaker, Milnthorpe and Beltex to £172 from J Stott Jnr, Crosscrake. Nice bred lambs full of meat were regularly 330p/kg to 340p/kg, with nice export bred lambs regularly selling at 310p/kg to 315p/kg, with a ring full of 45kg Texels to £146 from TMW&H Hodgson, Ulverston. The first of the Mule lambs saw 43kg to £128 from A Clarke, Nether Kellet.

Cast Sheep
350 cull ewes were forward today, which sold to an overall average of £107, with a large proportion of the sale being small, light weight and lean pure hill ewes, being recently weaned. A real shortage of the best heavy ewes, with the few which were forward today selling to £284, with other mediums £200 to £240. First cross ewes sold to £182 for both Suffolk cross and Texel cross, with better first cross ewes £150 to £170 and mediums £130 to £150. The best Mules sold to £172, with other heavier end £140
to £155, stronger mediums £128 to £140 and leaner hard worked Mules and first cross ewes £100 to £118. Pure hill ewes sold to £114 for Swaledales, with Cheviots to £112, Jacobs £100 with medium hill ewes £78 to £90. Better small ewes were £55 to £70, with the very smallest and leanest £38 to £52.

Calves
No less than 97 calves and stirks were forward at Junction 36’s fortnightly sale, with all goods keenly bid for by a ring side of local and travelled buyers, with onlooks coming from as far afield as Wales and Scotland. A very young selection of rearing calves were forward, with the best of these returning £490 for a Charolais from MH&AR Robinsons, Kendal with others at £450 from Bambers Farm, Thurnham. Numerous calves around the 6 week mark surpassed £400.
Stronger weaned bull calves sold to £510 for a British Blue from Wendy Stamper, Chipping with Angus’s from the same home to the same price. The dairy bull calves forward sold to £220 for a Friesian from Gibson & Berry, Endmoor with the best of these the top side of £150.
A good show of bull stirks were forward, with a ring full of eight cracking Friesians selling to £705 from Messrs Halpin, Barrow in Furness. A quartet of British Blues reached £680.
Rearing heifers sold to a top of £520 from Mrs A Meanwell, Tebay with younger Charolais to £450 from Bambers Farms, Thurnham. A month old British Blue from DW&E Cottam, Kendal reached £405. Any amount of month to 5 week old heifers surpassing £550.
Heifer stirks reached £550 for a British Blue from J&R Waller, Killington with another two from this home returning £540. Just a handful of steer stirks were forward, with these topping at £930 for a cracking Limousin from Bambers Farms, Thurnham with a pair from this home at £880.

Store Cattle
A full ring side of buyers were present for a typical summer show of store cattle, all were extremely well sold with many more needed on a fortnightly basis. Shorthorn bullocks sold to £1640 from Messrs Boyd, Longsleddale. A pair of Limousin bullocks sold to £1680 from J&M Haddow, Hincaster who sold Charolais’s to £1480. Yearling bullocks saw Charolais to £1480 from JC Walling & Son, Lyth. The best end were regularly £1300 plus, with nice grazers £1000 plus.
Heifer trade saw a smart ¾ Limousin from A Winder & Son, Ravenstonedale to £1380 with a pair of Angus selling to £1240 from AJ&H Clarke, Sedbergh. Charolais’s sold to £1240 from JM Haddow, Hincaster.
Grazing heifers were the sharpest trade seen for some time, with dairy bred Limousin heifers at 8-10 months selling to £990 from GM strong, Penrith.

OTM Cattle
An increased number of cull cows were forward, with these being predominately dairy bred this week. Of the few beef cows forward, these sold to 219.5p/kg for a British Blue cross from SJ&NS Wood, Windermere with other British Blue cross 204.5p/kg from JA&CA Gibson, Selside and Hereford cross 204.5p/kg from RJ&J Gardner, Natland. Top grossing beef cow was a Hereford at £1809. The best medium dairy cows sold to 187.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from WH Kitching & Son, Helsington and British Friesian from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton. Better parlour types were generally 170p/kg to 180p/kg, leaner sorts 160p/kg to 170p/kg, with the lightest and leanest 135p/kg to 150p/kg. Top grossing dairy cow achieved £1494, with others at £1444 and £1321. OTM heifers sold to 214.5p/kg and £1192 for a Holstein Friesian from JR Robinson & Son, Nook. Several cull stock bulls forward, which sold to 199.5p/kg for a Blonde from PJ&ES Rogerson, Appleby and £2089 for a South Devon from AT Threlkeld Ltd, Satterthwaite.

Calves & Weanlings
The weekly sale of rearing and weaned calves at Lancaster saw an entry of 95 keenly bid for, with all classes achieving maximum returns. Rearing calves sold to a top of £690 for a Charolais bull from S&J France, Over Wyresdale, with no less than 14 rearing bull calves passing the £500 mark. A mention must go to AD&R Milner, Brock for their one month old Charolais which sold to £550. Native sired bull calves sold to £530 for a Hereford from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with Angus’s to £510 from G&ME Woodhouse, Ellel.
Weaned bulls sold to £960 for a pair of Friesians from TE&A Gardner, Larbreck with TE&M Kidd, Ellel selling a trio of Herefords at 5 months old to £720. Only a handful of steers were forward, with well rearer Angus’s selling to £810 from G&D Ball, Little Eccleston.

Once again a fierce trade was witness at Lancaster’s store sale, with the sale reaching a top price of £1900 from RG&L Holmes, Carnforth. Regular supporter L Parson & Son, Levens achieved £1800 for an Aberdeen Angus steer. At £1760 was a pen of four from T Robson & Sons, Poulton Le Fylde and a pen of three from KH&D Holden & Sons, Pilling.
Top price in the heifers was £1670 from KH&D Holden & Sons, Pilling for Aberdeen Angus’s with four at £1500 from AS&D Parker, Nateby.
The monthly sale of stirks saw Angus steers from S&J France, Over Wyersdale reaching £1020 for a pen of three. Blue heifers from RW Rhodes & Son, Ellel sold to £900. The best of the Friesian stirks reached £610 from R&J Parkinson, Preesall.

95 OTM’s were forward selling to 269.5p/kg on two occasions, firstly for an OTM heifer British Blue from Barker Farms, Cockerham grossing at £1662.82 and secondly for a British Blue steer from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale which returned £1525.37. ME&B Mason & Son, Tatham topped the cows at 239.5p/kg, grossing £1714. The best of the dairy cows reaching 199.5p/kg from H&SD Cornthwaite, Kirkland. Top grossing diary cow came from Lawsons Dairy, Cockerham, reaching £1687.12, with many cows fresh out of the parlour achieving maximum returns. The best of the cast bulls reached 209.5p/kg and was the top price of the day at £1895.98.
