J36 Rural Auction Centre: Second Sale of Breeding Ewes & Shearlings and Autumn Pedigree Sheep Day. Saturday 21st September 2024.
Ring 1 Commercial Sheep
The second sale of breeding sheep saw a large crowd of local and travelled buyers in attendance, keen to secure additional and replacement stock. Mule shearlings sold to a top of £242 on three occasions from N Barker, Burton in Kendal and M&YS Barker, Halton with other strongest end shearlings £220 to £242, nice farming sorts £195 to £210, with all Mule shearlings averaging £197. An eye-catching pen of Aberfield cross shearlings from J Harrison, Slaidburn sold at £245. Texel shearlings sold to £270 from P&BA Langhorn, Ulverston, with other farming sorts generally £185 to £210, all sold averaging £190. Cheviot Mule shearlings sold to £190 and Suffolk cross to £182.
A keen interest in breeding ewes saw the flock dispersal on behalf of CF Hoggarth & Son, Burneside sell one crop Mules to £185, with others at £170 from FI&ME Little, Barrows Green who also sold two crops at £160. Other two and three crop Mules were regularly £140 to £160, with full mouth Mules to £140 from TMW&H Hodgson, Ulverston. Cheviot Mule ewes sold to £190 from KA Purtill, Wigan. Texel cross ewes sold to £180 from CR Alderson & Son, Mallerstang. Other continental ewes were generally £140 to £160.
The next sale of breeding ewes is on Saturday 19th October being, the Lakeland Fair sale for all classes of breeding ewes, shearlings, gimmer lambs and rams.

The autumn fair of pedigree sheep saw a selective trade with purchasers looking to secure only the best genetics and quality. The Dutch Spotted sale topped at 1050gns for the pre sale show reserve overall and female champion from I&G Lloyd, Tyn Twll. DA Dixon, Grayrigg Foot were awarded male and overall champion with this animal going to sell for 900gns. Gimmer lambs sold to 850gns for lot 122 from J Stead, Richmond, with ram lambs to 680gns for the first prize ram from C Harding, Elm Farm. Beltex sold to 700gns for a shearling ram from A Hewson, Burgh Head with others to 600gns from R Garth, Peaks View.
Badger Face Texels achieved an 100% clearance, topping at 650gns from B Dakin, Ravenshaw Farm.
Blue Texels sold to 480gns for the overall champion. Shearling rams from J&A Gargett, Wayside with others to 480gns from the same home.

Monday morning once again proving popular with vendors, with lambs selling to £175 and 365p/kg and cull sheep to £258.
Prime Lambs
Monday morning once again proving popular with vendors with 726 forward, selling to an overall market average of 280p/kg for lambs ranging from 29kg to 67kg. Well finished pure and three quarter bred lambs, were once again easily sold to an appreciative crowd of buyers. Topping at £175 from JR&LA Capstick, Killington with others at £168 from I Richardson, Catforth and T&E Burrow, Slyne. Numerous others in the chasing pack were £150 to £158. Well finished first cross lambs with weight and meat were regularly £136 to £145, with lighter weights £118 to £126. Mules sold to a top of £133, with other heavy weights at £131 and well finished standard weights £122 to £128. Several pens of light weight lambs saw the best Beltex to £120, with others £101 to £110. Super light weights sold at £82.50, with others £75 to £80. A top price of 365p/kg was achieved for a Beltex cross from JR&LA Capstick, Killington, with others at 335p/kg from M Coxhead, Little Hool and J Twigge, Lindale. Other well finished pure and three quarter bred lambs were regularly 320p/kg to 340p/kg. Well finished first cross lambs were 290p/kg to 305p/kg, with grass finished lambs 270p/kg to 285p/kg. Best light weight lambs sold to 343p/kg, with others 290p/kg to 310p/kg.

137 cull sheep were forward today, which sold to an exceptional trade, with many saying ahead of other local centres. Best continental ewes sold to £222 for a Texel from J&S Winstanley, Clifton. Other continental cross ewes were regularly £135 to £155, with mediums £118 to £130. Mules sold to a top of £131 from J Pinder & Sons, Newton with other mediums Mules generally £100 to £115, with leaner types £75 to £90. Pure hill ewes sold to £122 for Lonks from J Pinder & Sons, Newton with Cheviots to £110 and Swaledale to £90. Medium hill ewes sold at £60 to £70, with leaner and lighter weights £45 to £55.
Cull rams sold to £258 for a Texel from T Carter, Bolton. More ewes are required every week, to fulfil buyer demand.

Pigs
105 pigs forward today, with trade much more cautious than previous weeks. A trio of gilts topped at £160 from J Mayall, Rossendale. Store pigs sold to £60 from J GE Heseltine, Skipton. On the whole trade was easier but buyers were still looking for the best quality goods.
Prime Lambs
The weekly sale of prime lambs saw 1490 forward, with as seen nationally trade a little less on the week. A full ring side of buyers were all competing finished / fed lambs, with under finished lambs meeting a lot less demand and looking better suited to the store market. Heavy first cross Texels sold to £166 from M Salton, Burneside, with pure Texels selling to £159 from J Handley, Chaple le Dale. Heavy bred continental lambs were regularly £145 to £150. Beltex cross lambs sold to 325p/kg from MA&JA Winn, Burneside with other pens to 321p/kg from JE Atkinson & Son, Endmoor. The best end lambs were regularly 310p/kg plus, with first cross types full of meat 285p/kg to 295p/kg, under finished lambs were 250p/kg to 260p/kg. More hill lambs forward today, with Mules to £130 for a ring full from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale and other lighter pens to £123 from RHM&S Boyren, Colton.

The best heavy first cross ewes were regularly £140 to £160, medium £120 to £135 with a keen interest in those suitable for grazing at £90 to £105 and leanest sorts £60 to £80. Mule and Masham ewes sold to a new market record of £200 from JE Read, Hutton Roof. Other strongest end Mules were £130 to £145, well fleshed mediums £95 to £110, with grazing type Mule ewes £70 to £85, depending on quality and type. Pure hill ewes sold to £138 for Cheviots from J&M Wilson, Selside. Rough Fells sold to £134 from JE Read, Hutton Roof. Lambs forward in greater numbers, with every pen in the market full and buyers ringside from throughout the northern countries, north Wales and midlands. All keen to secure lambs of all classes and types. Well grown level drawn pens of lambs attracted keenest interest, selling to a top of £127 for Texels from High Wardses Farm, Cautley, with others regularly £110 to £118. Nice farming sorts were £98 to £108, with healthy longer keep continental cross lambs £92 to £97, with the smallest and youngest £75 to £85. Mules saw an increased audience of keen buyers selling to £118 from RI Dixon, Low Newton for a ring full. Other strong Mules were £106 to £112, with farming sorts £90 to £98 and longer keep Mules £82 to £86. Suffolks sold to £116, with other strong pens £110 to £115. More pure hill bred lambs were forward, with Cheviots to £97 and others at £91, longer keep sorts £80 to £88. Rough Fells sold to £80 and Herdwicks to £77.

North West Auctions saw 529 cattle fly through three sale rings in under two hours, with all vendors leaving well suited with prices achieved.

The largest entry of calves for several months saw 113 forward, with several new faces in attendance both buying and selling, attracted by this popular weekly sale. Strongest bull calves sold to £590 for a three month old British Blue cross from G&ME Woodhouse & Son, Ellel. Other nice rearing bull calves were regularly £380 to £450, with younger sorts £240 to £300. Native sired bull calves sold to £455 for an 8 week old Aberdeen Angus cross from AD&R Milner, Garstang. Hereford bull calves sold to £410 from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green with an entry of three week old Hereford cross from TL Baldwin & Son, Forton selling to £265, on several occasions. Dairy bull sold to £300 for Fleckvieh from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green with strongest end black and white £180 to £240, medium sorts £120 to £150, with younger sorts £60 to £90.
51 weaned and reared calves sold to an exceptional trade, with a new sale ring record of £1170 for a pair of British Blue cross bulls from TD&A Gardner, Great Eccleston who sold other bulls to £1020. Younger six month old British Blue cross bulls sold to £840 from Messrs Hey & Sons, Quernmore who also sold Aberdeen Angus cross at £700. Black and whites sold to £630 from AF&BA Dawson, Sedbergh.
Steers sold to £775 for a pair of Aberdeen Angus cross from JE&J Pye & Sons, Quernmore with others at £700 to £750.
Heifers sold to £750 for a British Blue cross from RA Bebbington, Greenhaulgh who sold Charolais cross at £690 and Aberdeen Angus cross at £570. Other younger weaned native heifers were generally £480 to £550.

286 store cattle saw all steers forward average £1304 and all heifers average £1192. Steers sold to a top price of £1980 for an Aberdeen Angus cross from R Townsend, Freckleton with other Aberdeen Angus cross £1900 from L Parson & Sons, Levens and Pilling Hall, Pilling. Simmental cross sold to £1880, as did British Blue cross. Charolais’s to £1800 and Limousin cross £1700. Dairy steers sold to £1740 for Fleckvieh from H Birkett & Son, Morecambe. Strong steers were regularly £1500 to £1700, with farming sorts £1350 to £1500. Heifers sold to £1820 for a Charolais cross from JM Haddow, Hincaster who sold others at £1660 and Aberdeen Angus cross at £1640. British Blue cross sold to £1620, Hereford cross £1620. Other stronger heifers were £1300 to £1500 and farming sorts £1150 to £1280.

OTM Cattle
130 cull cows and OTM cattle were forward today, with beef cows selling to a top of 209.5p/kg and £1916 for an Aberdeen Angus cross from MS&G Mason, Kirkby Lonsdale. Other medium type beef cows were regularly 175p/kg to 190p/kg and £1150 to £1300. Dairy cows sold to a top of 184.5p/kg, on three occasions from WS Burrow Ltd, Silverdale, T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping and B&AC Barnes, Middleton. Top grossing dairy cows was a Holstein Friesian from Richmond Hall, Cockerham totalling £1516. A large number of parlour type dairy cows were generally 160p/kg to 180p/kg and £1050 to £1200, with leaner sorts 125p/kg to 145p/kg and £850 to £1000.
OTM beef heifers sold to 269.5p/kg for a British Blue cross from A&FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel and a Beef Shorthorn cross from GR&A Foy, Conder Green. Top price of £1765 was achieved for a British Blue cross from A&FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel. OTM dairy heifers sold to 239.5p/kg and £1793 for a Holstein Friesian from T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping with other stronger heifers 200p/kg to 220p/kg and £1100 to £1300.
OTM steers sold to 259.5p/kg for a Limousin cross from WS Burrow Ltd, Silverdale and a British Blue from Messrs Atkinson, Skelsmergh. Other stronger fleshed beef steers were 220p/kg to 240p/kg and feeding type 195p/kg to 210p/kg. Today’s sale peaked at £1976 for an Aberdeen Angus cross from MS&G Mason, Kirkby Lonsdale who sold another three over £1900. Cull stock bulls sold to 269.5p/kg for a young Charolais from J Miller, Claughton on Brock, with Limousins to £1760 from A&MI Robinson, Orton.
