Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs, Prime Hoggs & Cast Sheep, Monday 24th June 2024.

Prime Lambs

Well meated / fed lambs attracted plenty of interest from buyers, with under finished leaner lambs harder to place. The best of the lambs were well bid for from start to finish, topping at 422p/kg for a pen of Texels from C Ellison, Pilling. Beltexs sold to 418p/kg from A&E Clarkson, Thurnham. Other best lambs were regularly 400p/kg plus. Heavy Texel lambs sold to £185 from H Birkett & Son, Overton. Beltexs sold to £184 and £182 from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Pens of first cross Texels sold to £180 from P Metcalfe, Denny Deck. Heavy continental bred lambs were 165p/kg to 170p/kg. Export bred lambs were a little harder to place today, with these regularly selling at 348p/kg to 355p/kg.

Cast Sheep

Less ewes were forward as suspected, with a sharper trade seen for all goods and an overall average of £130 per head. A pair of Texels sold to £182 from KA Purtill, Wigan with Suffolk to £173 from G Riley, Bolton le Sands. Mule ewes sold to £152 from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth with other pens to £146 from E Lund & Sons, Ingleton. Horned ewes sold to £132 for a Swiss Valais from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe with Dalesbred to £102 from S&J France, Over Wyresdale.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Pigs, Prime Lambs, Prime Hoggs & Cast Sheep, Tuesday 25th June 2024.

Pigs

Pigs do fly, as they reach 302p/kg and £290. The sale of pigs saw trade surpass recent levels, with new faces both buying and selling here at Junction 36. The best end pigs were well rewarded with a cracking pair of 96kg gilts from J Stott Jnr, Kendal reaching £290 or 302p/kg. Derek Lord, Preesall topped at £275 and MP Tattersall made a worthwhile trip from Langholm as his trio returned £272. Prime boars reached £172 from TS Wilson, Cockermouth with another at £170 from Derek Lord.

Optimism in the prime trade ensured store pigs sold well, with these selling to £100 from Belmont Farm Produce, Crook. The next sale of pigs will be on Tuesday 9th July.

Prime Lambs

Just over 1000 lambs were forward, as seen nationally export / leaner lambs were selling at a reduced trade, with heavier well meated lambs achieving maximum returns. Texels sold to £202 from WH Kitching & Sons, Hale, with Suffolks to £198 from RM&JL Whitton, Cartmel. A pen of fifteen Suffolks sold to £193 from S Wilman, Kirkby Lonsdale. Smart bred lambs sold either side of 400p/kg, with Beltexs to £189 from TMW&H Hodgson, Ulverston. Meated lambs throughout the sale wee keenly bid for, with these regularly 365p/kg to 370p/kg plus. Buyers were very cautious over leaner lambs today.

80 hoggs forward with these selling to plenty of interest. Texels sold to £180 from L Potter, Orton with Beltexs to £172 from T&E Burrow, Slyne. Dutch Spotted sold to £160 from AP Metcalfe, Crook and Mule sold to £148 from TMW&H Hodgson, Ulverston. Please note that hoggs will now be sold in the ewe section.

Cast Sheep

A reduced number of ewes were forward today, as farmers take advantage of the fine weather to gather crops and clip sheep. A fast trade for all classes and types was seen, with an overall market average of £139.20. The best pure bred ewes sold to £242 for a Texel from RA Batty, Selside with others at £220 from RT&ME Sutton, Stainton. Suffolks sold to £206 from RA Batty, Selside. Other medium pure and three quarter bred ewes were £180 to £200. First cross ewes sold to £194 for Suffolk cross from RM&JL Whitton, Cartmel with Texel cross also achieving £194.Stronger end ewes were regularly £160 to £180, with mediums £145 to £158. Other heavy pure breds saw Hampshire’s sell to £186 and BFL’s to £174. Cheviot Mules sold to £158 from JT&A Armitstead, Selsdie with North Country Mules to £154 from HP Armitage, Preston Patrick. Other stronger end Mules were £140 to £150, and mediums were £125 to £135. Pure hill ewes sold to £138 for Cheviot from JE Swan, Cartmel, Rough Fells £134 from L Potter, Orton and Swaledales £104 from TA&J Dixon, Selside.

Medium Continental rams sold to £140 from C Preston, Whicham with hill rams to £106 for a Swaledale from GR Park & Son, Whinfell.

More ewes are required every week to fulfil buyer requirements.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Fortnightly Sale of Calves, Stirks, OTM Cattle & Store Cattle, Thursday 27th June 2024.

Calves

Once again, a good trade was seen for all classes of calves and stirks at the Junction 36 fortnightly sale. JW&TE Sharp, Lyth treated us to a pen of cracking British Blue the bulls with these topping the rearers at £570 and £550. Credit to Bambers Farm, Cockerham for bringing a marvellous run of calves of which the bulls topped twice at £550 for Charolais, with a further three over £500. Aberdeen Angus bulls reached £400 from A Pickthall, New Hutton. A handful of diary bull calves were forward, the strongest of these breaking the £100 barrier.

Weaned bulls sold to a top of £710 for a British Blue from J&R Waller, Killington with others at £580 from Messers Sowerby, Appleby. A consignment of British Friesian weaned bulls from Williamson, Colby sold to £465.

Rearing heifers met a fierce trade, with an emphasis on calves suitable for suckler replacement. The best of these sold to £510 and £500 for British Blues from JW&TE Sharp, Lyth with Charolais’s from Bambers Farm, Cockerham passing £450 on four occasions. Aberdeen Angus sold to £370 from Holgate, Silverdale.

Weaned heifers sold to £520 for a trio of British Blues from J&R Waller, Killington. A handful of steer stirks were forward, selling to £840 for a Simmental from A Hodgson, Ambleside with Limousins to £750 twice from this home.

A strong entry of 125 store cattle were but before our busy ring side of local and travelled buyers, ensuring a good trade for all classes and types. Aberdeen Angus heifers sold to £1640 from GM Metcalfe Jnr, Underbarrow who sold other pens of heifers to £1560. Diary bred British Blues sold to £1500 from I&AJ Armer, Burniside with other pens from the same home to £1470. Yearling heifers saw the best Limousins sell to £1280 from S&M Cooper, Leece with nice bred grazing sorts £950 to £1050. Bullocks sold to £1600 for Aberdeen Angus from GM Metcalfe Jnr, Underbarrow who sold other to £1590. A run of Fleckvieh bullocks from RW&S Nicholson, Lupton saw his best to £1460, with many others to £1450. Yearling bullocks saw Limousins to £1460 from JA&CA Gibson, Selside. The best bullocks were regularly £1200 to £1300, with nice grazing types either side of the £1000 mark. All bullocks forward averaged £1225, with heifers averaging £1220.

An increased number of cows were forward today, with an overall market average of 181p/kg. Best beef cows to sold 219p/kg for a Blonde Aquitaine from PJ & ES Rogerson, Appleby with other stronger end beef cows regularly to 190p/kg to 205p/kg. Top grossing beef cow was a Hereford from RJ & J Gardner, Kendal totalling £1834.00. The best dairy cows sold to 214p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from Jenkin Crag Farms, Kendal with other better end dairy cows regularly to 182p/kg to 195p/kg and parlour type cows 168p/kg to 175p/kg. Top grossing dairy cow achieved £1533 for a Holstein Friesian from Strickland Hill Farming, Witherslack.

OTM heifers sold to £239p/kg for a Stabiliser cross from M Allen, Carnforth who sold others at 229p/kg. Angus cross sold £1705 from G Cuthbertson, New Hutton. Cull Bulls sold 224p/kg and £2256 for a Limousin from PJ & ES Rogerson, Appleby with others at 194.5p/kg and £1775 from TLB & J Knowles, Selside.

Calves & Weanlings

The weekly sale of calves and weanlings saw a slightly decreased entry, however all classes and types were well bid for. The best of the rearing calves sold to £470 for a month old British Blue from AD&R Milner, Claughton on Brock with others at £450 from Barber Farms, Claughton on Brock. Quite a few dairy bulls were forward today, with these meeting a buoyant trade. Just over month old Friesians sold to £240, with others at £220. A super entry of weaned bulls saw a top price of £830 for a pair of British Blues and a single Fleckvieh from TD&A Gardner, Great Eccleston. Hereford bulls sold to £750 from JR Newsham, Conder Green with this home also selling weaned Friesians to £550.

Only a handful of rearing heifer calves were forward, with these topping at £380 for a Charolais from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with others at £375 from this home. Native sired heifer calves sold well, with four week old Herefords to £300 and Aberdeen Angus to £320. Weaned heifers sold equality a well, with a pair of heifers from JR Newsham, Conder Green to £990. Freshly weaned British Blues from J&R Waller, Killington reached £650 and a handy trio of Aberdeen Angus heifers from J&CG Redmayne, Samlesbury returned £440.

Some quality weaned stirks from G&D Ball & Son, Little Eccleston flew to £940, with a pair from this home also at £890. More calves are required at next weeks sale.

Store Cattle

A tremendous show of store cattle saw a trio of British Blue steer sell to £1800 from J&H Bland, Levens with others from this consignment at £1790, £1760 and £1680. Other stronger steers sold to £1770 for Aberdeen Angus from JS Clark & Sons, Catforth with others regularly £1550 to £1650. Heifers sold to £1580 for a pair of British Blue cross from GR&A Foy, Conder Green with Limousins at £1550 from EJ Hodgson & Son, Lambrigg. Stronger heifers were regularly £1380 to £1500.

The monthly show of stirks at Lancaster saw both a good entry and a good ringside of buyers ensuring a respectable trade was seen throughout. A pair of British Blue steers from I Atkinson & Son, Warton sold to £870 with Herefords from MJ &LC Lund, Quernmore at £850. R Fare, Kirkham brought a sweet pair of British Blue heifers with these selling to £800. A trio of Limousin heifers from I Atkinson & Son, Warton sold to £770.

Less cows were about today with many farmers in the field, an overall market average of 181p/kg was achieved. Beef cows sold to 211p/kg and £1391 for an Aberdeen Angus cross from G&D Ball & Son, Little Eccleston with others at 204.5p/kg and £1351 from JH Woof & Son, Oxenholme. Other feeding types were regularly 190p/kg to 202p/kg. Dairy breds sold to 209p/kg for a Montbeliarde from WR&CM Lawrenson, Winmarleigh with Holstein Friesian to 207.5p/kg from GR Park & Son, Whinfell. An entry of predominately mediums parlour types were 170p/kg to 185p/kg. Top grossing dairy was a Holstein Friesian from H&SD Cornthwaite & Son, Garstang achieving £1578 with Montbeliardes selling to £1552 from WR&& CM Lawrenson, Winmarleigh.

OTM heifers sold to 249.5p/kg for a Montbeliarde from WR&CM Lawrenson & Son, Winmarleigh with Aberdeen Angus selling to £1607 from JH Woof & Son, Oxenholme. A single Holstein Friesian cull bull sold to 189p/kg from GA&A Atkinson, Cantsfield.
