J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Pigs, Prime Lambs, Cast Sheep and Boys are Back in Town, Tuesday 26th September 2023.

Pigs

Prime pigs sold to an exceptional trade for perhaps one of the best quality shows of pigs for several months. A top price of £245 and 258p/kg was achieved on two occasions, firstly for a trio of Large White x gilts from JM Navesey, Darwen followed by a pair of Pie Train x gilts from W Stamper, Chipping. Other well bred and well finished prime gilts and hogs regularly sold from £220 to £230. Prime boars sold to £200 for a Pie Train x from W Stamper, Chipping with others at £190 from D Nicholson, Cockermouth. Cull sows sold to £190 for a Saddleback from JM Navesey, Darwen with others at £150 from W Stamper, Chipping. Weaners and stores attracted a large crowd of competitive bidders with well bred stores selling to £120 from B Capstick, Sedbergh and weaners selling to £58 from W Wilson & Co, Carlisle and £55 from G Malpass, Sedbergh.

Prime Lambs

1505 lambs forward sold to an overall averaged of 248p/kg, with heavy weight paying at Junction 36, new buyers ensured all lambs were keenly bid for. A pen of Beltex lambs sold to a top of £152 from A Thompson, Carnforth with Texels selling to £150 from L Beck, Heversham. Heavy pens of Charollais lambs sold to £149 from JM&NJ Strickland, Whinfell. Suffolk lambs topped at £139 from J&R Waller, Killington. Heavy bred Continental lambs were regularly selling at £128 to £132. A sharper trade was seen for medium weight lambs with 40kg to 42kg lambs frequently selling to 250p/kg to 260p/kg or £108 to £115 per head. Best bred lambs saw Beltex sell to 330p/kg from A Thompson, Carnforth with heavy bred Texel lambs selling to 291p/kg from TMW&H Hodgson, Nibthwaite. More hill lambs were on offer today, with all meeting plenty of demand. Mules sold to £113 from JA Bennet, Longsleddale with others at £111 from JF&AW Sutton, Longsleddale. A full ring of Cheviot sold to £108.5 from Stockdale Farms, Sedbergh.

Cast Sheep

A record entry of 916 cull sheep forward which sold to a full ring side of buyers, with all classes and types competed for to satisfy orders. Well bred ewes sold to £150 for a Beltex x from AW&D Brown, Pennington with Texel x selling to £143 from TH&D Cornthwaite & Son, Cartmel Fell. Other heavy meated ewes were generally £120 to £140. Mules sold to £116 for a pen of Cheviot Mules from TH&D Cornthwaite & Son with others at £114 from M Allen, Carnforth. North Country Mules sold to £97 from SW Atkinson & Son, Crook. Plenty of interest in ewes suitable for feeding, with the stronger pure and cross breds £80 to £90 and hill ewes £40 to £60, depending on breed and quantity. Hill ewes sold to £98 for Cheviots from Stockdale Farms, Sedbergh with others at £92 from JW&E Woof & Son, Sedbergh, Swaledales to £68 from D & A Nicholson, Ulverston, Herdwicks to £78 from AJ&SM Harrison, Kentmere and Rough Fells to £78 from PE Allen, Ings. A large entry of lean hard worked hill ewe were generally £30 to £40. depending on quality and type. Cull rams sold to £124 for BFL’s from RS&BA Harker, Carnforth.

Boys are Back in Town

The second evening sale of breeding rams saw a top price of £950 achieved for a Texel shearling from A&HC Smith, Hawick with others Texel shearlings selling at £850 twice from SW Huck, Kirkby Stephen. Suffolks sold to £750 from TH Garnett & Son, Stank. Charollais x Beltex at £750 from JA&R Geldard & Sons, Levens. Strong well bred shearling rams of all breed were regularly £500 to £650. Two shear Suffolk x rams sold to £500 from J Smith, Brookhouse and Texel four shears selling to £450 from TMW&H Hodgson, Nibthwaite. A Blue Faced Leicester shearling from Messrs Hewson, Carlisle sold to £500. Ram lambs sold to £450 for a Suffolk from Messrs Hewson, Carlisle who sold Texels at £400.

The final sale of breeding rams is on Saturday 21st October being the Lakeland fair, entries for this sale close on Wednesday 3rd October.

Rearing and Weaned Calves

A large number of rearing calves (95) were forward which sold to a packed ringside of buyers. Bull calves sold to £480 for a Charolais x from JH Towers & Sons and British Blue x from A Pickthall. Other stronger rearing bull calves were £400 to £470. Younger calves sold to £420 from HJ Robinson & Son, with others at £300 to £380.

Native sired bulls sold to £375 for Aberdeen Angus x from RF&CE Hodgson with others at £340 from JH Towers & Son. Dairy bulls sold to £355 for a Montbeliarde from Colby Farms Ltd with Black and Whites selling to £180 from Gibson & Berry.

Heifer calves sold to £485 for a Charolais x from JH Towers & Sons with others achieving £385. British Blue heifers sold to £355 from W&S Airey, with others at £350 from A Pickthall. Stronger heifers were £290 to £340,

with the younger end £200 to £250. Native sired heifers sold to £310 for Aberdeen Angus x from M&S Blease, with others at £260 from Colby Farms Ltd. Weaned calves and stirks saw 108 forward. The strongest steers sold to £1130 for a Simmental from S&M Carter with 8 month old British Blue x selling to £920 from J James and Bambers Farm Ltd. Younger steers sold to £750 for Limousin x from Bambers Farm Ltd, who sold others at £740. Recently weaned steers sold to £660 for Charolais x from C Slater, with Hereford x £640 from W Stamper. Dairy steers sold to £530 for a ring full from Messrs Halpin. Heifer stirk sold to £750 for British Blue x from J James, Simmental x £720 from S&M Carter with others £620 to £700. A ring full of Limousin x heifers (6 month old) from Bambers Farms Ltd sold at £575, with others at £530.

Bull stirks sold to £640 for Hereford x from JM Simpson, who sold Aberdeen Angus at £630 and £610. Dairy bulls sold to £400 for black and whites from Whitestone Farm.

Store Cattle

The autumn prize show and sale of store cattle saw buyers in attendance from Scotland, Wales, Midlands and the Northern Counties, attracted by the quality and quantity on offer. The show was kindly judged by Mr M Wilcock, Wigan who awarded the champion rosette to a Parthenais x steer from MA&JA Winn, who was also awarded the reserve champion rosette for a British Blue x steer. Vendors must be complimented on the quality of cattle forward, and were rewarded with a fast and competitive trade. The sale peaked at £1950 for the champion, with the reserve achieving £1850. Other strong steers sold to £1800 for a Charolais x from JM Haddow with Limousin x to £1650 from PW Clarke and £1640 from MW&M Hodgson. Well grown steers were regularly £1450 to £1600 and yearlings £1200 to £1400.

Heifers sold top £1720 for a Limousin x from MA&JA Winn with others at £1640 from NA&J Temple and £1620 from PW Clarke. Charolais x sold to £1600 JM Haddow and British Blue to £1480 from FI&ME Little. Other well grown heifers were regularly £1300 to £1450 and yearlings £1100 to £1250.

Bulls sold to £790 for a 6 month old Hereford x from RJ&J Gardner.

OTM Cattle

Cull cows and OTM cattle saw 87 forward, selling to a market average of 152p/kg. Heavy and well fleshed cows attracted the keenest attention, selling to 229.5p/kg for a Limousin from S Whitehead, with others 219.5p/kg from GH Jones. Other beef cows were 180p/kg to 195p/kg, with mediums 150p/kg to 175p/kg. Top grossing achieved £1681 for a Limousin from GH Jones.

Dairy cows sold to 179.5p/kg from J&H Bland & Son, with other well fleshed cows 160p/kg to 170p/kg. A large proportion of the sale being leaner parlour types, selling at 130p/kg to 150p/kg with some very small and lean cows at realisation. Top grossing achieved £1195 from J&H Bland & Son Ltd. Heifers sold to 219.5p/kg and £1202 for Stabilisers from J&A Smales, with others also 219.5p/kg from TW Wilson. Dairy heifers sold to 197.5p/kg and £1050 for Fleckvieh from SJ&J Hodgson & Son. Steers sold to 224.5p/kg and £1569 for British Blue x from JW Robinson & Son, with bulls to 229.5p/kg and £1753 for a Limousin from LA&M Lambert.

Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Calves, OTM, Store Cattle and Stirks, Friday 29th September 2023.

NWA Lancaster had 718 cattle forward at its popular weekly sale, with all three sale rings attracting new customers from far and wide with trade reported as being well ahead of other local centres.

Calves & Weanlings

Calf numbers continue to rise with 118 sold today, to an ever expanding ring side of buyers. Bull calves sold to a top price of £585 for a pair of one month and twenty eight day old British Blue x bulls from JP&C Robson, Garstang. Aberdeen Angus x sold to £560 from Tom Barron Farms Ltd, Woodplumpton with other British Blue x at £555 from G&ME Woodhouse & Sons, Ellel and a two month three day old Charolais x bull from Lawson Farms, Cockerham achieving £520. Other strong bull calves were regularly £400 to £500. Six week old bull calves were £320 to £400, with only the youngest £260 to £300.

Dairy bulls sold to £245 for a British Friesian from AD&RL Milner, Garstang with others at £185 from G&ME Woodhouse & Sons and £175 from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe and Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. Other nice rearing black and whites were generally £90 to £120. Several weaned bull calves forward sold to £590 for a Limousin x from JH Towers & Son, Tunstall, with Simmental x to £515 from MH&AR Robinson, Old Hutton. Black and whites sold to £320 from A&MI Robinson, Orton with others at £295 from RE&P Miller, Barnacre.

Heifer calves sold to a top price of £405 for a two month and one day old British Blue x from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale with other at £400 from SW&K Metcalfe, Whittington and G&ME Woodhouse & Sons, Ellel. Limousin x heifers sold to £390 from JH Towers & Sons, Tunstall who sold others at £385. A two month and nine day old Charolais sold at £335 from Lawsons Farm, Cockerham, with other at £295 from MH&AR Robinson, Old Hutton. Nice rearing sorts were generally £280 to £340, with younger sorts £200 to £265 and the youngest and smallest £150 to £200. Several weaned heifers forward sold to £490 for a Charolais from MH&AR Robinson with British Blue x selling to £465 form G&ME Woodhouse, Ellel and Aberdeen Angus x at £450 from JH Towers & Sons, Tunstall.

Store Cattle

445 store cattle saw a top price of £1980 achieved for a Charolais x steer from JM Haddow, Milnthorpe who sold others at £1880 and £1820. Limousin x steers sold to £1900 from DJ Townley, Lancaster with others at £1740 from H Birkett & Son, Morecambe. Heavy well grown short keep steers were regularly £1500 to £1700, which included Montbeliardes at £1680 from BL&D Banks, Pilling, Beef Shorthorns at £1620 from GR & A Foy, Conder Green and Aberdeen Angus at £1590 from CE&MA Hewitt, Forton. A keen interest in younger steers for over

wintering with Aberdeen Angus x selling to £1370 from EE Thornton & Sons, Morecambe, with fourteen month old Simmental x from AVA Thornton, Cockerham selling at £1160.

Heifers sold to a top price of £1760 for a Charolais x from JM Haddow, Milnthorpe who sold others at £1580.

Aberdeen Angus x heifers sold to £1550 form GR&A Foy, Conder Green with British Blue x achieving £1480 from JD&GM Bracken, Garstang and Simmental x £1400 from EW&A Bradshaw, Stalmine. Heavy well grown heifers were regularly £1300 to £1450.

The monthly sale of stirks immediately followed store cattle, with buyers keen to secure replacement stock ahead of winter housing. Steers sold to a top price of £1000 for a British Blue x from I Atkinson & Son, Carnforth with others at £980 from MD Close & Son, Arkholme and £900 for Shorthorns x from J&T Hunter, Dent. A large number of younger steers forward saw eleven month old British Blue x sell to £890 from I Atkinson & Son, Carnforth. Aberdeen Angus x sold to £860 from Mason Birkland Barrow, Over Kellet with others at £850 from A Prickett, Farleton and Charolais x sold to £840 from G&MA Smith, Samlesbury. Dairy bred steers sold to £650 for a British Friesians from R&J Parkinson, Preesall.

Heifer stirks sold to a top price of £710 for ten month old British Blue x heifers from J&R Waller, Killington with Charolais x selling to £700 from G&MA Smith, Samlesbury and Aberdeen Angus x to £670 for eight month olds from AW&AM Park, Ellel. Younger heifers were generally £550 to £620, depending on breed and quality.

Bull stirks sold to a top price of £670 for a consignment of Stabilisers from M Allen, Carnforth.

Cast/ OTM Cattle

Another large entry of 155 cows were forward, as farmers look to offload stock ahead of winter housing. All cows today averaged 150p/kg, with 85% of the sale being dairy cows. Heavy well fleshed cows of all breeds attracted the keenest bidding, with dairy cows selling to 219.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from Strickland Hill Farming, Witherslack and beef cows selling to 214.5p/kg for a Limousin from TS&HJ Park, Cowin Bridge. Other beef cows were generally 180p/kg to 200p/kg with the better end of dairy 160p/kg to 175p/kg, parlour types 140p/kg to 150p/kg, lean dairy cows 100pkg to 125p/kg with the very leanest at realisation. Top grossing beef cow was a Simmental from Barlow Bros, Croston achieving £1604 with dairy selling to £1563 from K&DE Woodhouse, Ellel and £1561 from J&G Thornley Ltd, Kirkham. Beef heifers sold to 254.5p/kg and £1626 for a Limousin x from DJ Townley, Lancaster with dairy heifers selling

to 229.5p/kg for a Fleckvieh from P Knowles, New Hutton and £1668 for a Holstein Friesian from Lawsons Dairy, Cockerham.

Beef steers sold to 284.5p/kg for a Limousin x from M&RW Stirzaker, Milnthorpe with others selling to £1708 for a Limousin x from J Lamb, Glasson. Dairy bred steers sold to 189.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from JH Atkinson & Partners, Selside and £1169 from TM Gardner, Tatham. Cast bulls sold to 149.5p/kg for a Limousin from J Bell Jnr, Wennington and £1553 for a Holstein Friesian from D Fox & Co, Bay Horse.
