Countryside Stewardship Capital Grants

DEFRA has announced that due to high demand this year Capital Grant applications will be closed for the time being. This also includes applications that have been submitted and were awaiting an agreement offer which are now on hold in the RPA system. A further update will be shared in early 2025.

Sustainable Farming Incentive Annual Declarations

Annual Declarations are due towards the end of each year of your SFI agreement. Please note if we have submitted your application we are going down our spreadsheet every month and submitting any that are due.

Once your Annual Declaration is submitted you may then need to complete a Rotational Declaration, this will only be for agreements with rotational options. If you would like to move or increase any rotational options please let us know.

Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Prime Lambs, Cast Sheep & Store Lambs, Monday 25th November 2024.

Prime Lambs

The prime sheep trade at Lancaster takes a nice jump in the right direction, with a pleasing average of 315p/kg.

Good quality 43kg Texel lambs sold to 377p/kg from M&S Purtill, West Houghton. KA Purtill, Wigan sold heavier 46kg Beltexs to 370p/kg, again for top quality sheep. M&S Purtill also sold Beltexs to £165 for a pen of two.

Mules sold to £157 for a pair from Messrs Kelsall & Sons, Chipping. Lighter weight lambs hit 338p/kg for 38kg Beltexs from Messrs Metcalfe, Ingleton who also had other 37kg lambs at £121. Messrs Rogerson, Appleby received £156 for a nice pen of eight Texels, while the same good home had lighter 42kg lambs to £148.

Store Lambs

Store lambs at the end of the sale were phenomenal trade, acting as the cherry on top for the day and proving evidence of the massive demand for sheep going forward. Store lambs averaged £93, for a show which included a lot of longer keep lambs.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Pigs, Prime Lambs & Cast Sheep, Tuesday 26th November 2024.

Pigs

J36 sale of prime pigs and store pigs saw a two-tier trade with the best-bred finished pigs selling to a fast trade.

Prime pigs hit £270 for a pair of 90kg gilts from J Stott, Kingsland with hogs from this home at £250 for the same weight. MP Tattersall was well rewarded for his trip down from Langholm selling a pair of prime gilts to £255. Lightweight boars sold to £145 from Hannah Kent, Cockerham with others reaching £140.

Stores and weaners continue to sell well, with a pen of 10 weaners selling to £88 from HA Sawrey, Ulverston while MP Tattersall, Langholm continuing their good days trading selling 11 weaners to the same price.

Next week sees our Christmas show of pigs (prime pigs only). Classes for over and under 90kg.

The next sale for all classes of pigs will be 17th December.

Prime Lambs

The upward trend continues

Up significantly on the week, a mixy and some what weathered show of prime lambs were met with much enthusiasm from an ever growing ringside of buyers at J36. Every bit of weight counts and is counted on at our Tuesday fat sales with vendors ever pleased with price per head of sheep sold.

An overall average exceeding £140 per head provides more evidence of the trade heading in the right direction. 315sqq and 311ppk average of all shapes and sizes also encouraging.

Culls sell to £242

Not to be out done the cull sheep sold to a fast trade for all classes and types with vendors highly suited with prices achieved. Best continental ewes sold to £242 with others £200-£230, first cross ewes to £205 with heavies £170-£200, meated mediums £145-£165 with others regularly £120-£140. Mules sold to £183 for North Country Mules, £164 Cheviot Mules and £158 for Rough Fell Mules. Heavies £145-£165, mediums £118-£130 with lighter weights £95-£110. Pure Hill ewes saw Lleyns sell to £151, Cheviot to £146, Lonk to £128, Rough Fell to £125, Scotch Blackface to £120 and Swaledale to £98.

An abundance of cull rams saw continentals sell to £198 with mediums generally £150-£180. Hill bred rams to £170 with others £110-£150.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Calves, Stirks, OTM/Cast Cattle & Store Cattle, Thursday 28th November 2024.

Calves

A nice show of calves forward today with all classes possibly dearer on the fortnight, six bull calves achieved over £500 today, topping at £570 for a six week old Charolais from Gibson & Berry, Endmoor. This home produced another in the £500 club at £510. AE Luffman, Howgill was next highest at £530 for a belter of Limousin also at six weeks old. British Blues sold to £525 from JB Morley, Great Asby. Other British Blues sold to £510 from AK&BM Robinson, Arkholme. Messrs Sowerby, Appleby produced the sixth over £500, selling their one month and three day old Charolais to £505. Native sired bulls reached £450 for an Aberdeen Angus from AK&BM Robinson, Arkholme with a good show of Black and Whites selling to £300 from this home. Black and Whites also sold to £300 from J&B Morley, Great Asby with this home producing others to £290 and £280. Heifer calves also keenly sought after, selling to £500 for a peach of a British Blue from A Pickthall, Kendal. Next at £400 was another two British Blues this time from J&R Waller, Killington. Two Charolais sold to £370 from Gibson & Berry, Endmoor. Younger month old heifers sold to £370 for a British Blue from TK Robinson, Old Hutton with real younger Aberdeen Angus to £195 from FB Dunning, Orton. Next fortnight sees our Christmas show of calves, with classes for native and continental bulls and heifers. Judging at 9.30am prompt.

Stirks

Stirks continue to descend on Junction 36 to take advantage of our regular consignment of buyers. Bullocks sold to £1060 for a Bazadaize from Ireland Farms, Kirkby Lonsdale with this home providing Hereford cross to £920. JR Robinson, Kendal turned out three nicely grown bullocks selling to £850 for Simmental and a pair of British Blues at £830. A pen of four British Blues from JR Pye, Stalmine sold to £820 at six months old while an Aberdeen Angus bullocks topped at £800 twice from S Cleasby, Broughton in Furness and WH Kitching, Sedgwick.

Bull stirks sold to £820 for Charolais from R&BJ Cleasby, Broughton in Furness with younger three month olds to £700 from WH Kitchen, Sedgwick.

Heifer stirks were also easy to place, selling to £740 at 4 to 5 months old for a pair of Angus from R&B Parker, Killington. Next at £680 was a pair of six month old British Blues from JR Pye, Stalmine followed by a trio of Aberdeen Angus to £650 from S Cleasby, Broughton in Furness. More stirks are needed every fortnight.

Store Cattle

Exceedingly strong store cattle trade continues to excite.

New heights being reached fortnightly at Junction 36, with a very powerful cattle trade marching onwards and upwards. Once again, a busy ringside witnessed a variety of types, all exceed expectations. Also included in today’s sale was a section for later born suckler calves, these types were met with more demand than ever. Bullocks topped at £1840 for an Aberdeen Angus from BJ Bowness, Kendal. Another Angus steer sold to £1820 at seventeen months old from JE Wightman, Lupton. The same home also sold a pen of four Limousin bullocks to the £1820 mark. M Howard, Grange Over Sands received £1780 for four Angus bullocks. BJ Bowness, Kendal also had one at this money. British Blue heifers sold to £1700 from RJ&D Holden, Broughton in Furness. Bulls hit £1610 from TD ME & GE Todd, Sedbergh for an Angus while a thirteen month old Blonde bull made £1600 from SJ&NS Wood, Windermere.

The late born calf section also saw some fantastic prices, a seven month old British Blue heifer sold to £1160 from Slinger and Eaton, Middleton. The same home had another one at the same money, this time for a Limousin. Slinger and Eaton also sold a younger bulls to £1170. A five month old bull fetched £1100 from J Knipe, Kendal. Our next sale is in two weeks time on the 12th December, which is sure to provide sellers with some early gifts and Christmas cheer. Don’t miss out!

OTM Cattle

80 cull cows forward today with numbers continuing to come here to Junction 36.

Top pence per kilo today was an OTM steer from JW Robinson, Farleton reaching 274.5p/kg and grossing at £1743.08. Next at 269.5p/kg was a Blonde bull from SJ&NS Wood, Windermere with this grossing £2050.90. Cows reached 209.5p/kg for a South Devon from AT Threlkeld, Ulverston grossing £1520.97, with most sucklers surpassing the 200p/kg mark. A show of hard worked dairy cows today, saw these topping at 189.5p/kg from PW&D Swindlehurst, Kendal. Some good gross prices achieved today, reaching £2710.43 for a Limousin bull from TA Atkinson, Ulverston with South Devon bulls to £2390.62 from AT Threlkeld, Ulverston. Cows topped at £1741.64 for Beef Shorthorn from I&AJ Armer, Burneside with the best of the dairy cows reaching £1425 from PW&D Swindlehurst, Kendal.

A 500 Friday here at Lancaster with all three rings leaving vendors delighted. Calves & Weanlings

87 calves and weanlings were forward today, with rearers to £600 for a British Blue from RE&P Miller, Barnacre with others to £540 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. Aberdeen Angus sold to £495 from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale. One month old Herefords achieved £330 from JR Newsham, Conder Green and best of the black and whites sold to £160 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale.

A younger show of heifer calves saw T&CM Kelsall, Chipping lead the way with their British Blues making £310, other British Blues achieved £290 from Throstle Nest, Pilling and Angus led the natives at £280 from both Wallbank Farms and T&CM Kelsall.

Weanlings were easy to place, reaching £780 for a pair of Angus bullocks from Mason Birkland Barrow, Over Kellet. AN Ball, Little Eccleston achieved £770 for their Angus bullocks, while E Lund, Ingleton produced Hereford to £750. A nice run of British Blues from J&O Galbraith, Endmoor saw a pair of bullocks to £730, with this home also selling British Blue heifers to £665. However, it was in fact JR Pye, Stalmine claiming top spot selling a trio of Limousin heifers to £680. Dairy bred weanlings were good to sell, a pair of bulls achieved £630 from TD&A Gardner, Gret Eccleston with others to £540 from JR Newsham, Conder Green.

Store Cattle

Store cattle had to be seen to be believed, 271 went under the hammer with sixteen selling over £2000 and a further seventeen over £1900. After spirited bidding from start to finish it was in fact TJ Lloyd, Settle claiming top spot with their Aberdeen Angus steers at £2100. J Lamb, Glasson was close behind reaching £2080 for his British Blue, with this home producing two of the four steers at £2060 today. The other two coming from K&DE Woodhouse, Ellel who’s run of cattle saw others to £2040 (x3) and £2000 (x3). DE&SM Moorhouse, Natland sold a pair of Limousins to £2000 with R&DM Rossall, Pilling selling British Blues to the same price. Black and white steers possibly seeing the biggest lift, with these selling to £1900 for a trio from TJ Lloyd, Settle with others to £1820 from K&DE Woodhouse, Ellel. Heifers sold to £1980 for an Aberdeen Angus with a pair of Angus close behind at £1960, all produced by K&DE Woodhouse, Ellel. British Blue sold to £1900 from JD&GM Bracken, Catterall with two at £1860 in this consignment. M&RW Stirzaker, Milnthorpe reached £1900 for their Limousin with too many prices to mention top side of £1700. Today incorporated the monthly sale of stirks, with trade for these being strong following a buoyant sale of stores. Top price in this section was a pair of Limousins from J Mellin, Long Preston achieving £1300, with a pen of nine Hereford from R&J Holgate, Yealand next at £1180.

OTM Cattle

150 OTM’s put before nine active buyers, ensuring a trade for all. Top pp/kg today was an OTM steer from O Butler, Kirkham achieving 304.5p/kg, this run of steers sold to average 299.5p/kg. Cows sold to a top of 289.5p/kg for a cracking Limousin from R Harker & Son, Grayrigg. Four cows from this good home averaged 271.5p/kg or £2096.11. OTM Heifers sold to 284.5p/kg for British Blues from DJ Clarke, Barnacre with Friesians to 279.5p/kg from GA&A Atkinson, Cantsfield. Parlour cows sold to 249.5p/kg for a Friesian from EE Thornton, Heaton with harder worn sorts 180p/kg to 195p/kg.

Gross prices saw top prices of £2305.80 and £2262.84 for Limousin cows from R Harker & Son, Grayrigg with next top being a Limousin bull from T Ayrton & Son, Over Wyresdale achieving £2257.98. SA Hill, Slyne sold OTM Blonde heifers to £1933.63, while OTM Friesian heifers reached £1902.14 from JI Whitaker, Clapham. Top gross dairy cow this week was a Friesain from T Taylor, Woodplumpton which sold for £1529.34.
