Breeding Ewes

The much anticipated sale commenced with 1000 breeding ewes which sold to some extremely competitive trade with buyers keen to secure proven stock. North country mule ewes saw a top price of £255 for pen of homebred 1 crop ewes from AR Edmondson, Hawkswell Farm with others selling at £250 from FI & ME Little, Helm Croft and JM Mawson, Hole Beck Farm. 2 crop mules regularly selling £220-£240, with older ewes selling to a top price of £205 for 4 crop ewes with others regularly £170-£190. 1 crop cheviot mules sold to £190 from J & M Wilson, Cooper House with 2 and 3 crop ewes selling to £180 from M Robinson, Low Barrows Green Farm. Several pens of Suffolk x ewes sold to £170 for 1 crop ewes from TA & JA Dixon, Yoad Pot with others £230-£250. Texel x ewes sold to £240 on 3 occasions for 1 crop ewes from FI & ME Little, Helm Croft with others £220-£235 with older ewes selling to £200 from KA Purtill, Hindley Green. Flock reduction of 4 crop Aberfield ewes from H Pumphrey Armitage, Preston Patrick Hall sold to £170 with others £155-£165.

A packed ringside of local and travelled buyers led to a blistering trade, with all mule shearlings forward averaging a massive £245 per head. The first prize pen of shearlings sold to £325 from Robinson & Ward, with the same good home selling other pens to £310 with this price also being achieved by JK & BE Townley, Lancaster. With many of the best bred mule shearlings selling £270- £280. Masham Shearlings sold to £240 twice from JM Woof, New Hutton and DE & J Waine,Longsleddle. Cheviot Mule shearlings created plenty of interest with the best selling to £270 from JS & KM Wilson & Son Kendal with others to £265 from DE & J Waine Longsleddle. Continental Shearlings saw well grown & well-bred shearlings keenly sought after single suffolk sold to £420 from M & J Greenwood, Middleton with the first prize pen of texels selling to £320 from JR & LA Capstick, Killington who sold other pens to £300 all continental shearlings averaged £261.

Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Prime Lambs & Cast Sheep. Monday 26th August 2024.

Prime Lambs

Bank holiday boom at NWA Lancaster, with prime lambs to £213 and 435p/kg.

NWA Lancaster held its popular Monday morning sale of prime lambs, which saw well bred and well finished lambs selling to the keenest demand, with these regularly selling at 305p/kg to 320p/kg. The best pure bred lambs sold to 435p/kg for Beltex from GR&A Foy, Conder Green, with endless pens of well finished pure bred Texels selling at 355p/kg to 380p/kg. Well finished first cross lambs were generally 310p/kg to 330p/kg, with a large proportion of todays sale being lambs direct off grass, selling at 285p/kg to 305p/kg, depending on quality and finished. Under finished lambs a more cautious trade, and perhaps looking better suited to the Monday morning store market.

Todays sale peaked at £213, again for Beltex from GR&A Foy, Conder Green, with other pure and ¾ bred lambs regularly £155 to £180. First cross heavy weight lambs were £140 to £160, standard weights £128 to £138, and lighter weights £108 to £115, depending on quality and finish.

Hill bred lambs are coming forward in greater numbers, with Mules to 263p/kg and £129 from Calderside Farms. Cheviots sold to 300p/kg and £135, Cheviot Mules to 270p/kg and £124 and Horned lambs to £110.

Eight buyers were ringside today, all keen to secure lambs for Monday morning orders, with more required every week to satisfy demand. An overall average of 295p/kg was achieved for lambs ranging from 34kg to 54kg.

Cast Sheep

118 cast sheep were forward today, and continued to sell to a keen buyer demand, with several grazing orders now coming forward. Todays sale topped at £220 for a Beltex cross ewe from DH Patel, Lancaster with other Beltex ewes to £190 and £182 from GR&A Foy, Conder Green. Other stronger medium Continental ewes were £150 to £170, with Suffolks to £146. First cross ewes sold to £139 for Texel cross, with other mediums generally £118 to £135 and grazing types £96 to £110. Mules sold to £127, with other stronger end £120 to £125, a large number of grazing type Mules were £65 to £80. Pure hill ewes sold to £100 for Cheviot and Herdwicks sold to £70. Learn and medium Swaledale sold to £59, other smaller leaner Swaledales were £40 to £50.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Pigs, Prime Lambs & Cast Sheep, Tuesday 27th August 2024.

Pigs

An astronomical trade witnessed at J36 sale of prime and store pigs, with 14 prime pigs selling over £300. Battle for top price was hotly contested but coming but coming out on top was GC&GW Taylor, Crook with their pair of 120kg prime gilts at £340, with this home topping the hogs at £325 for 130kg. Jade Barkley made the trip down from Whitehaven with a consignment of six averaging £308 for 105kg. Boars topped at £320 for 120kg from the previous mentioned Taylors of Crook, with four more 100kg boars from this home at £280. Topping the pp/kg was C Woodhouse, Garstang with a pair of hogs at 322p/kg, grossing £290.

Stores sold to a top of £115 from M Howarth, Grange Over Sands and weaners to £98 from Messrs Halpin, Barrow.

Prime Lambs

1200 lambs were forward, with a two tier traded seen here at Junction 36. Well meated / fed lambs were meeting plenty of bidding and easily sold, with leaner grass fed lambs harder to place. Heavy bred lambs met another strong trade at Junction 36, with a ring full of Texel to £166 from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston. Other Texels sold to £165 from F&CE Bentley & Son, Shap. Pens of Suffolks sold to £162 from J&R Waller, Killington. Many pens of meated / fed heavy continental lambs were regularly £145 plus.

The best bred lambs sold to 335p/kg for Texels from IL Dixon, Cantsfield with the best 330p/kg plus. Nice bred commercial lambs were regularly 305p/kg to 310p/kg.

More hill bred lambs on offer today, with a ring full of Mules to £131 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale.

Cast Sheep

Just short of 500 ewes were forward, despite a lot of people being on standstill due to recent sheep sales. A full ringside of buyers were forward, to include several customers looking for grazing ewes. Just a handful of the strongest pure and pedigree bred ewes today, which sold to £232 for a Beltex ewe from R&E Ladds, Kendal. With Texels to £203 from D&A Nicholson, Ulverston and other medium pure and pedigrees £170 to £200. The best heavy first cross ewes sold to £198 for Texels, with others at £155 to £180. Meated mediums £128 to £140, with lighter weight ewes £105 to £118. Mules sold to £166, with heavy Mules to £164 and others generally £140 to £150, mediums £122 to £135 and best light weights £90 to £102. Leaner sorts finding a keen interest as grazing ewes, at £78 to £85. BFL’s sold to £196, Cheviots £168, Dorset £136, Lleyn £110, Rough Fells £106, SBF £101 and Swaledales £95. Medium hill ewes £70 to £85, with lesser and leaners sorts £40 to £60. Several cull rams forward sold to £195 for both Texels and BFL’s, with other leaner continentals generally £120 to £140 and hill rams £80 to £100.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Special Sale of Suffolk & Continental Gimmer Lambs followed by Fortnightly Sale of Store Lambs. Thursday 29th August 2024.

Store Lambs

3000 store lambs were forward at J36 fortnightly sale, after following an unseasonal week of weather the sale still attracted keen interest and achieved an average of £97.18. The sale topped at £130 for a pen of twenty from J&R Bell, Crook with other short keep lambs £115 plus. Texels sold to £129 for ten from MB&J Fell, Kendal and Beltex to £125 from D Cockett, Ingleton. A large proportion of todays sale were Mules, with these topping at £105 from JW Hodgson, Longsleddale and a ring full from Messrs Hodgson, High Borrans at £101.50. The strongest of these the top side of £90. Cheviots sold to £102 from B Wilson, Selside with generally all medium keep lambs £95 to £110, and only the long keep lambs to be had for less than £90.

The annual show and sale of continental gimmer lambs was a flying success, with buyers traveling from all counties, ensuring all vendors left with a small on their face. We would like to thank our judge Mr TJ Jackson, Lancashire who awarded the following results:

The overall champion pen topped the trade at £300 from R&E Ladds, Kendal who sold other pens to £280. A pen of Texel cross Suffolks sold to £202 from TA&JA Dixon, Selside. First cross Texel Mules sold to £170 from JG&PH Thompson & Sons, Selside with Suffolk Mules to £160 from Messrs Ellwood, Drysbeck.

Many pens of strong gimmers were £155 to £165, with smart bred runners £140 plus. An overall average of £148 was achieved, with this being £41 up on the year.

Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Calves, OTM's, Store Cattle & Stirks. Friday 30th August 2024.

A 500 plus Friday at Lancaster, with good prices achieved in all three rings. Calves & Weanlings

109 calves and weanlings were forward today at Lancaster, with all classes selling to a fast trade. Rearing calves sold to a top of £640 and £630 for British Blue bulls from J&G Thornley, Kirkham. Native sired bull calves sold to £580 for Aberdeen Angus cross from Tom Barron Farm, Woodplumpton. JS&KM Wilson, Kendal presented well grown Limousin bulls to £550 and £540. Younger calves were keenly sort after with Barber Farms, Brock selling month old British Blues to £370 and Aberdeen Angus to £350. Dairy bulls sold to £235 for fortnight old Montbeliardes from GJ&G Billington, Garstang. JS&KM Wilson, Kendal topped the heifer calves at £465 for Limousins with month old British Blues to £370 from Throstle Nest, Pilling and £350 from JH Towers & Sons, Tunstall. Native sired heifers sold to £275 for Aberdeen Angus. Weanlings were good to sell, topping at £810 for Aberdeen Angus bulls from TD&A Gardner, Great Eccleston. Charollais cross bulls sold to £780 from EW&A Bradshaw, Stalmine. Six month old British Blue bulls sold to £745 from AW&AM Park, Ellel and weaned heifers to £735 for a British Blue from RE&P Miller, Barnacre with this home selling Hereford heifers to £655.

Store Cattle & Stirks

320 through the main ring, with the sale featuring our monthly entry of stirks.

Store trade was every bit as good as recent weeks, with the top spot this week going to DJ Townley, Lancaster for a British Blue bullock realising £1980. GR&A Foy, Conder Green were closely behind at £1940 for their British Blue bullock. Other notable prices were £1850 for a pair of Aberdeen Angus bullocks from EW&CR Clegg, Stalmine and Fleckvieh bullocks to £1500 from EW&RM Towers, Hornby.

DJ Townley, Lancaster also topped the heifers at £1820 for a Limousin, while £1780 was achieved for an Aberdeen Angus heifer from KH&D Holden, Pilling. TE JS & SA Carruthers, Underbarrow achieved £1720 for their trio of Limousin heifers, with a pen of four Aberdeen Angus from EW&CR Clegg, Stalmine at £1680.

The monthly sale of stirks saw all entered keenly bid for, with twelve month old Aberdeen Angus bullocks topping this section at £1060 for a pen of six from JW Thwaites, Tebay. British Blue bullocks sold to £940 from FW Rhode, Ellel and a pen of Black

and Whites stirks to £820 from G Rawlinson, Manchester. Heifer stirks were equally as good with a pen of four Limousins to £1010 from SE&J Gorst, Littledale. Four eight month old Aberdeen Angus sold to £770 from A&J&F Marsh, Garstang.

Numbers are rising week on week, with todays sale averaging 180p/kg for cows, 240p/kg for OTM heifers and 260p/kg for OTM steers.

Other better medium beef cows were 190p/kg to 205p/kg, with those suitable for finishing 170p/kg to 190p/kg. Top gross beef cows was a Stabiliser from A Dixon & Son, Selside achieving £1705. Young dairy cows sold to 239.5p/kg for a British Friesian from RG&B Lewis, Middleton, with heavy weight meated Holstein Friesian generally 180p/kg to 195p/kg. Parlour types were 155p/kg to 175p/kg with only the leanest and lighter weights less (120p/kg to 140p/kg). Top grossing dairy cow was a Holstein Friesian from RR&JA Knowles, Docker achieving £1533.

OTM beef heifers sold to 279.5p/kg and £1737 for a Limousin cross from WS Burrow Ltd, Silverdale, with other beef heifers 240p/kg to 270p/kg, being £1450 to £1700. Dairy heifers sold to 264.5p/kg and £1785 for a Montbeliarde from A&FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel with Holstein Friesian to 239.5p/kg from Barker Farms Ltd, Warton and £1358 from J&O Galbraith & Son, Endmoor.

OTM beef bred steers sold to 269.5p/kg for an Aberdeen Angus cross from O Butler, Kirkham and a Luing from D J & A Freeman, Troutbeck. Other Aberdeen Angus cross sold to £1835 from O Butler, Kirkham. Dairy bred steers sold to 269.5p/kg and £1668 from WS Burrow Ltd, Silverdale. Cull bulls sold to 274.5p/kg for a Limousin from I Atkinson & Son, Warton with British Blue stock bulls selling to 219.5p/kg from W Heaps, Chorley which also was top grossing at £2096.
