Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs, Prime Hoggs, Cast Sheep & Sheep with Lambs at Foot, Monday 27th May 2024.

Prime Lambs

A bigger show of 204 spring lambs were forward, with the best bred lambs continuing to sell to a fast trade, however more commercial type lambs sold to a little less than in previous weeks. Texels sold to £200 from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe with other well bred lambs to £198 for Texels from JE Harrison, Winmarleigh. Pens of heavy Suffolks sold to £196 from WN&D Smith & Sons, Cockerham. An overall averaged of 401p/kg was achieved.

214 hoggs were forward, as seen nationally selling to a lesser trade. Texels sold to £190 from T Taylor, Woodplumpton who sold other pens to £182. A ring full of Texels sold to £181 from GH Sanderson & Family, Catforth. Hill bred hoggs saw Cheviots sell to £172 from AJ Cardwell, Pilling with pens of Gritstones selling to £142 from Cardwell Farms, Stalmine and Mules to £140 from KA Purtill, Wigan.

Cast Sheep

Just over 100 ewes were forward, selling to another strong trade with all forward averaging £127. The sale topped at £194 for Texelw cross ewes from JA Lambert, Out Rawcliffe with Suffolks to £172 from KA Purtill, Wigan. Cheviots sold to £166 from J&SJ Risebrough, Silverdale. Mules sold to £160 from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe, with 45 Mules forward selling to an overage £131 a head. A run of Dalesbreds from S&J France, Over Wyresdale saw their best sell to £122. More ewes are needed on a weekly basis here at Lancaster.

Sheep with Lambs at Foot

A busy ring side of buyers ensured all ewes and lambs sold to a strong trade. Dorset ewes with young Texel twin lambs sold to £250 from S Hadwin, Millom. Aged Cheviot ewes with Texel twin lambs sold to £225 and £222 from SE&J Gorst, Littledale.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Pigs, Sheep with Lambs at Foot, Prime Lambs, Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep, Tuesday 28th May 2024.

Pigs

Todays sale of pigs saw 72 forward, with these selling to a top price of £228 for prime gilts from C Woodhouse, Nateby. The next down was again prime gilts from J McEwan, Dunfries at £205. A top of 188p/kg was achieved for prime gilt from P Martin, Balderdale with this home selling boars to 142p/kg. The best of the prime boars sold to £185. A handful of culls were making £50 to £75. Store pigs topped at £88 for a pen of five and weaners sold to £55.

Prime Lambs

255 spring lambs were forward, selling to a averaged of 402p/kg. Heavy lambs were well sort after, selling to £209 for Texels from RA Holmes, Inskip with Beltexs to £207 from GR Geldard, Gilpin Bridge. Suffolks sold to £207 from WT Whittaker & Son, Nether Kellet. The best heavy lambs were regularly £190 to £200. Export lambs saw 43kg Beltexs to £180 from WJ&L Barker, Carnforth with Texels to the same price from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. A ring full of 39kg Texels sold to £171 from Kendal College, Kendal. All types and weights of spring lambs are needed on a weekly basis to fulfil buyers requirements.

A very much a two tiered trade was seen, with fed and meated hoggs meeting demand and leaner sorts now discounted. Heavy Texel hoggs sold to £211 from RT&ME Sutton, Stainton with other pens of Texels selling to £210 from RL&ML Lowery, Holker. Suffolks sold to £207 from M&RW Stirzaker, Milnthorpe. Mules sold to £204 from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton. A run of well fed hoggs from GM&A Jackson, Little Eccleston sold SBF’s to £169 or 360p/kg, with ring fulls of Cheviots to the same price or 376p/kg and other pens to £168 on numerous occasions.

Cast Sheep

A fast trade was seen for all classes and types of cull sheep, with more required every week to fulfil buyer requirements. The sale peaked at £300 for a Texel ewes from R&E Ladds, Kendal with other better end pure and three quarter bred ewes £260 to £290. The best first cross ewes sold to £214 from JW&TE Sharp, Lyth. Other heavy first cross ewes were £170 to £190, mediums £140 to £165 and smaller meated sorts £120 to £140. Mules sold to £178 from WJ&L Barker, Carnforth with other heavy Mules £155 to £175, mediums £120 to £140 with smaller leaner sorts £100 to £115. Pure hill ewes sold to £190 for Cheviots from DR Preston, Caton with Lleyns to £156, Swaledale £138, Dalebreds £118, Rough Fells £110 and Herdwicks to £90. Medium hill ewes were nicely selling at £85 to £110, with the smallest and leanest £60 to £75. All ewes forward averaged £128.

Cull rams are coming forward in greater numbers every week, selling to £215 for a Texel from RI Dixon, Low Newton. Other better end Continentals were £175 to £200 with mediums £140 to £165. Pure hill breds sold to £150 for Cheviots, £132 for Herdwicks and £114 for Swaledales.

Sheep with Lambs at Foot

The second show and sale of hoggs with lambs was met by a packed ringside of buyers, ensuring a strong trade was seen. The pre sale show was kindly sponsored by Road Runner Tyres and Grace Dobson (Laurence Pierce Wool Merchants) and judged by Ian Dixon, who awarded the following results:

The sale peaked with a tremendous pure Texel hogg with pure Texel lambs from IM Jaeban, Cockermouth selling to £400. First cross Texel hoggs with Beltex cross lambs from DR Preston, Caton sold to £300. Three quarter bred Texel hoggs with Texel lambs selling to £295 from JH&JE Taylor, Ainstable with other pens to £290. All continental bred hoggs forward averaged £272 per unit.

Mule hoggs with lambs were a brisk trade with the best selling to £282 from DR Preston, Caton, who sold other pens twice to £280. Also achieving £280 was JH&JE Taylor, Ainstable. Other pens sold to £275 twice, firstly from RH&C Ayrton, Abbeystead and G&KM Atkinson, Colby. All Mules hoggs forward averaged £268 forward. Ewes and lambs were the fastest trade seen all season, with aged Texel ewes with young Beltex single lambs selling to £306 from JM&NJ Strickland, Whinfell. Other single outfits sold to £285 from CR Alderson & Son, Kirkby Stephen. A run of aged Texedale ewes with Beltex twin lambs sold to £280 from Shuttleworth & Brown, Sedbergh. Broken mouth Herdwick ewes suckling young Texel twin lambs sold to £160 from Kirkby & Longworth, Kentmere with singles to £110 from the same home.

Calves

The fortnightly sale of calves and weanlings at Junction 36 saw an entry of 93 sell to an increased ringside of buyers.

The best of the rearers sold to £560 on two occasions for British Blues bulls both from JW&TE Sharp, Lyth with Limousins at £540 from Langley Park Farms, Millom. Charolais’s sold to £500 from Gibson & Berry, Endmoor. Month old calves sold to £410 for a British Blue and £370 for an Aberdeen Angus both from A Pickthall, New Hutton. Black and whites sold to £220, with others at £200, the strongest of these were £150 upwards.

Weaned bulls sold to £970 for a Limousin from PJ Holt & Sons, Blackpool with freshly weaned Aberdeen Angus’s at £650 from Millfield Stud, Giggleswick.

A handful of weaned steers sold to £1090 for a Limousin from FW Park, Windermere with other Limousins from PJ Holt & Sons, Blackpool at £860 and £850 twice.

A good show of heifers was forward, with buyers seeking future suckler replacements, ensuring a good trade. Rearers sold to £500 for a British Blue from Gibson & Berry, Endmoor with this home selling one of two

Month olds sold to £340 for British Blues from HJ Robinson & Son, Milnthorpe and £310 for Limousins from R&JE Wharton & Son, Appleby. Store Cattle

A packed ring side of new and loyal buyers ensuring a fast trade was seen, many more cattle could have been sold to the vendors advantage. Limousin bullocks sold to £1680 from AE Atkinson & Son, Endmoor. Aberdeen Angus bullocks sold to £1550 from BJ Bowness, Kendal with others to £1460 from the same home. Yearling bred bullocks sold to another fast trade, with Limousins to £1410 from HR&KA Hodgson, Barbon and Blondes to £1400 from SJ&NS Wood, Windermere. The best end were regularly £1300 to £1400, with nice grazers selling over the £1000 mark. A ring full of first cross 12 to 14 month old British Blue bullocks from G&ID Postlethwaite, Howgill sold to £1240.

The heifer trade saw a top of £1600 for Limousins from AJ&L Birkett, Little Langdale with Aberdeen Angus heifers to £1560 from BJ Bowness, Kendal. Strong heifers were regularly £1400 to 1500. Yearlings saw the best Limousins sell to £1380 from JA&J Harper, Killington with Charolais’s to £1340 from HR&KA Hodgson, Barbon. Good grazing heifers were regularly £1050 to £1100.

OTM Cattle

An increased number of cull cows were forward, as farmers look to take advantage of the current high trade. All forward averaged 178p/kg.

The best beef cows sold to 219.5p/kg for a Limousin from RHM&S Boyren, Colton. Other stronger end native and continental cows were 190p/kg to 210p/kg, with medium cows for finishing 175p/kg to 190p/kg. Top grossing beef cows was an Aberdeen Angus from G Cuthbertson, New Hutton achieving £1671, with another at £1664 from JT Procter, Flookburgh. The best dairy cows sold to 204.5p/kg for a British Friesian from Mason Birkland, Over Kellet. Other better end dairy cows were 175p/kg to 190p/kg, with parlour types 160p/kg to 180p/kg and lighter and leaner sorts generally 140p/kg to 155p/kg. Top grossing dairy cow was a Holstein Friesian from TW&CA Long, Ulverston achieving £1561, with other better end diary cows £1200 to £1300.

OTM heifers sold to 244p/kg and £1786 for an Aberdeen Angus cross from BJ Bowness, Kendal with other beef heifers regularly 205p/kg to 220p/kg or £1400 to £1600.

Several cull bulls forward today sold to 189.5p/kg for a Belted Galloway, with others generally 160p/kg to 180p/kg and selling to £1320 for a Hereford.

Dairy Cattle

New calved dairy saw heifers sell to £2050 from J&O Galbraith, Endmoor who sold others at £1900. A pair of cows from Barbers Farms, Claughton on Brock sold to £1500.

Calves and Weanlings

The Friday sale of rearing and weaned calves saw again a busy ring side of new and returning buyers. Rearing calves sold to a top of £380 for a three and half week old Limousin from D&K Howarth, Hambleton, with month old Aberdeen Angus from J Bargh, Morecambe also achieving £380. A handful of black and white bulls were forward, with these selling to £250 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale, the strongest of these were £150 plus.

A strong show of weaned bulls were forward, selling to a top of £640 for an Aberdeen Angus from AW&AM Park & Son, Ellel. Freshly weaned two month old Aberdeen Angus cross reached £500 from Tom Barron Farm, Catforth. A handful of weaned steers were forward which sold to £880 for a British Blue from FW Rhodes, Ellel with others from this home at £730.

Only a few rearing heifer calves were forward, with these selling to £255 for a five week old Aberdeen Angus from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale.

A good show of weaned heifers today, with prices exceeding vendors expectations. Selling to a top of £670 for a pair of British Blues from FW Rhodes, Ellel. Smaller freshly weaned heifers sold equality as well, with a trio of Aberdeen Angus from A Shepherd, Preesall achieving £470 and a Longhorn at £360.

A super entry of store cattle saw steers sell to £1750 for Aberdeen Angus cross from KH&D Holden & Son, Pilling. A super run of 40 from K&DE Woodhouse, Ellel sold to £1700 for a ring of British Blue cross, who also sold Aberdeen Angus cross to £1690. Charolais’s sold to £1680 and Limousins £1640. Stronger steers were regularly £1500 to £1650, with medium feeding sorts £1280 to £1400.

Store heifers sold to £1640 for Limousin cross from JT&GV Dobson, Clitheroe with British Blue cross to £1560 and Aberdeen Angus cross £1510. Other stronger end heifers were £1400 to £1500, with medium feeders £1220 to £1350.

The monthly sale of stirks steers saw eight month old Aberdeen Angus cross sell to £870, with Shorthorns £850,

British Friesians £840, Herefords £820 and British Blues £800. Younger steers finding keen interest, with these generally £650 to £720.

Heifer stirks sold to £820 for a ring full of 10 month old Limousin cross, with Aberdeen Angus cross to £800. Other heifers were generally £700 to £780 and the younger end £600 to £650.

OTM Cattle

Another rise in the numbers of cull cows forward, with vendors rewarded with a fierce trade and a market average of 178p/kg. The best beef cows sold to 224p/kg for a British Blue cross with other at 210p/kg to 220p/kg and mediums feeding types 185p/kg to 200p/kg. Top grossing being a Hereford achieving £1726. The best dairy cows sold to 219.5p/kg, with other heavy well fleshed cows 185p/kg to 200p/kg. Parlour type cows were 160p/kg to 180p/kg, with the lighter and leaner sorts 130p/kg to 150p/kg. Top gross being a Holstein Friesian at £1617, with another closely behind at £1603.

OTM beef heifers sold to 269.5p/kg and £1650, with others regularly 220p/kg to 240p/kg and £1450 to £1600. Dairy heifers sold to 231.5p/kg and £1460, with other better end cows 185p/kg to 215p/kg, being £1150 to £1350. OTM steers sold to 249p/kg for both a Holstein Friesian and Limousin, with British Blue cross selling to £1809. A single cull dairy bull sold to 169p/kg.
