Weekly report & newsletter Prime Stock Show & Sales NWA Lancaster The annual Christmas Prime Lamb show on at Lancaster had the strongest show of lambs out for some years. Thanks goes to our judge Andrew Finch of Dunbia and todays sponsor Jim Peet Agriculture. The Champion pen of Lambs was awarded to GR & A Foy of Parkside with a pen of Beltex. The champion lambs went onto sell for £120 to the judge. A strong trade throughout with a market average of 193ppk and SQQ of 194ppk for a larger entry of over 1,000 lambs forward. Best quality lambs sold 220ppk plus easily topping at 286ppk for the prize pen from GR & A Foy. First cross lambs sold around the 200ppk mark with a larger entry of hill bred lambs forward. Mules sold around 190ppk with horned lambs selling in and around the mid 180ppk.

A fantastic entry of Prime Cattle forward for the Christmas show. Frank Towers of Curwin Hill expertly judged and awarded the Champion rosette to Barbara Rayton of Winston with a British Blue heifer. Reserve Champion was the second prized heifer and was awarded to a stylish Limousin heifer from Kerry Foster of Tarleton. The first prized steer was won by Richard Preece of Thornbush and Brian Carter of Cragg End won the Bull class with a Limousin. Some tremdous cattle forward for the show was met by equally as strong trade. Clean cattle eagerly sort after with the champion heifer weighing 560kg and selling for 315ppk to Country Style Meats of Lancaster who also bought the reserve champion at 298ppk. A strong entry of prime bulls topped at 201.5ppk for the first prized bull from Brian Carter of Cragg End and a market average of 185ppk.

Tuesday 9th December saw the weekly sale of primestock held at J36, where a fantastic show of 3,200 prime sheep were forward. This included our annual Christmas Show of Prime Lambs This year the judging duties were in the very capable hands of Mr Andrew Dawson of Sedbergh. An outstanding show of 50 pens of show sheep were forward over 5 classes and, after judging the classes, Andrew awarded the championship rosette and the Jack Ireton Trophy to a cracking pen of Beltex x lambs from Messrs M E Wannop & Sons of Heaton Hall. These went on later to sell for the top price of the day at £155/head to Mr Robert Skelton. Trade was fantastic from start to finish with the smart end of the lambs topping at 329.8p/kg, but regularly 230-260p/kg. Commercial first cross lambs were 210-225p/kg. Once again a good show of well finished hill lambs were forward. Mule lambs regulary £38-£42 over the weight. Horned lambs topped out at 201.4p/kg from Fishwick Brothers of Longsleddale for a pen of Swaledale lambs with the majority 185195p/kg. Trade ended up at 193.67p/kg for all sold, with half the lambs forward being hill bred. NWA Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 5th December Some fantastic cattle forward today and a real credit to vendors for the annual Christmas show and sale of Store Cattle. Thanks go to our judges David and Martin Wilcock who did a good job of placing what was an impressive show, with a dozen pairs of steers out to show and a strong entry of pairs of heifers. Winning the Tom Owen Memorial Trophy for the Champion pair of steers and retaining the title for a second year was J Capstick and Sons of Whicham Hall with a pair of Limousins. The heifer class was won by R Capstick and Son of Fell End Farm with a pair of British Blues. A big thank you goes to our show and sale sponsor HSBC Bank and there representative Mark Pearson. Plenty of good cattle on offer today sold to a strong trade throughout. The prize winners from J Capstick & Sons of Whicham Hall reached £1510 after some frantic bidding to Rod Owen of Bold. David Moorhouse of High House Farm sold a pair of Limousins to £1490 with plenty of other good steers selling over the £1250 mark. Charolais heifers sold to a top of £1300 from JD & GM Bracken of Greenlands Farm. There was a strong demand around the ring for all classes of cattle with Black and whites selling well and young growy cattle frantically bid after with more needed to meet a strong demand.

A nice entry of Cast Cows forward this morning saw well fleshed cows sell well. Topping the sale was JJ & MA Park selling a Frieisan heifer to 164.5ppk. Beef Cows sold to a top of 159.5ppk for a Limousin from JE Bracken, St Michaels. Black and White Cows sold to 129.5ppk from TE Kidd, Quernmore. A good entry of Calves this morning with 70 forward to a very busy ring full of buyers for all classes of calves leading to a very strong trade. The Christmas Show this morning saw a very nice show of calves put before judges John & Thomas Kelsall, Ingleton. Champion Calf was awarded to Eileen and David Wallbank, a British Blue Bull at 1m 11days, which later went on to sell for the day’s top price of £500. Credit goes to Eileen and David Wallbank for turning out a fantastic pen of show calves, winning 4 of the 5 show classes as well as the Champion and Reserve. Native bred calves sold well, topping at £370 for bulls and £250 for heifers. Away from the show, Montbelliardes sold to £180 and Limousins to £350 both from David Townley, Winney Carr. A nice Charollais bull at 12weeks selling to £450. Black and White calves were a strong trade topping at £115 with other strong calves regularly £70-£98. Smaller younger B&W calves a considerably better trade, £40-£60. Stirks sold to a strong trade topping at £670 for a suckler bred Blue bullock at 7months from RH & C Ayrton. Bulls sold well with, Limousins to £515 and Blues to £480 from R Simm, St Helens.

NWA J36 Sale Reports Thursday 4th December STORE LAMBS SELL TO £90 at J36 The weekly sale of Store Lambs saw a fast trade with a large crowd of local and travelled buyers and sellers in attendance. The best bred lambs continue to sell to a premium topping at £90 for Beltex x from RA & C Benson, Gamswell Farm with others £85. Strong meated sorts sold from £68 to £75. Medium keep lambs generally £58 to £65 with harder bred long keep / small lambs £48 to £55. Ram lambs sold to £75 for Charollais x from Ashton Agriculture, medium keep £55 to £60. Small and hill bred £42 to £47. A few ewe lambs still forward selling to £81 for Mashams from RA Batty, Redhills. Vendors - please declare ram lambs at time of sale.

The weekly sale of Calves at J36 had a reduced entry forward with many vendors holding back their calves for next weeks Christmas Show. As per usual at J36 plenty of buyers around the ring helped the calves forward sell to a strong trade. Limousin heifer sold to £240 from C Parsons of Town House. The entry of calves forward was mainly made up of Black and Whites selling to a sharp trade topping at £55 for 13 day olds from FG & MR Martin of Lords Plain. Christmas Show is next week. Thursday 11th December 2014 show at 9.30am sale at 10.15am. Show classes for Calves 56 days and under.

North West Auctions J36 Charity Carol Concert Monday 8th December saw the annual Christmas Carol Concert take place at J36 Rural Auction Centre, where a packed ringside of people turned out for this festive event in aid of RABI. A fantastic amount of £2200 was raised from the evening with a secial thank you to Barclays Bank who also gave a very generous donation. Thank you to everyone who supported the event or helped out especially to Kirkby Lonsdale Brass Band and the Children who performed the Christmas Nativity.

Don’t forget our annual Christmas sales of Dressed poultry take place on Monday 22nd December at 12 noon at Lancaster Auction Mart and 6pm at J36 Rural Auction Centre. Some great entries of turkey and geese already entered, prizes will be awarded for the most festively dressed male and female customers at both sales.
