Weekly report & newsletter NWA J36 ‘Lad’s Night Out’ Lads Night Out sell to £1,400 The Annual ‘Lads Night Out’ prize show and sale of Breeding Rams, saw a catalogued entry of over 400 attract buyers from throughout the Northern Counties, Scotland, Wales and The Midlands. Following the judging of the individual breeds, the judges combined to award an overall championship rosette to Mr R Batty of Kendal with a superb Suffolk Shearling from his Redhills flock, which sold for £1,050 to Messrs Wood & Lightburn of Shap. The Reserve rosette went to a Texel Shearling from W W & D Boow, which sold for a final bid of £980 to F Towers of Wray. The top price of £1400 was paid for a Beltex Shearling from S Harryman, purchased by R A & C Benson, Ulverston. A new feature of the sale was the sale of individual females, which saw pedigree Beltex Gimmer Shearlings from D Towers of Wray, sell at £420, with Charollais x Beltex Gimmer Shearlings £360 from J A & R Geldard. NWA Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 5th September 677 Cattle and 486 Sheep at NWA Lancaster Another large entry of Store Cattle this morning saw bullocks sell to £1490 for a pair of Charollais from Robin Dogson, Burton in Lonsdale. A trio of Charollais from K Barron sold close behind at £1420. Angus bullocks sold to a top of £1320 from M Allen, with Angus heifers selling to £1150 from AJ & D Knowles, Windy Hill. A good show of cattle this morning were met by more buyers round the ring. All vendors left happy with the prices achieved. Cast Cows, a good number of cows forward this morning saw meaty cows and heifers sell well with plainer out of parlour sorts a little easier. Taking the top five spots in the OTM ring today and topping trade was DH & M Kellet & Sons, Boundary House with a Hereford Heifer at 204.5ppk. Black and White Heifers sold to 144.5ppk from A Swale with Friesian cows selling to 127.5pk from GB & EA Metcalf & Son, Holme House. Overall OTMs averaged 118.8ppk. Calves and Stirks, another strong entry with 94 going under the hammer. Calves sold to a top of £410 from JH Towers, Tunstall Hall, with a Lim Bull. British Blues sold to £350 from J Bargh & Son. Continental calves were forward in better numbers, with Sim bulls selling to £300 from SH & LE Birkett, Stubb Hall. Black and whites sold to a top of £120 from WN & D Smith, Cocker House. Best sorts sold in excess of £90 with well fleshed calves £40-£65. Stirks topped at £585 from Days of Royton, Oldham with a pure Angus Bull, Angus x sorts sold to £480 again from Days of Royton with others at £425 from Jones of Sandvilla. Simmental heifers sold to £550 from JR & M Ayrton, Bambers Farm. Herefords sold to £525 and Lims at £480. Breeding sheep and store lambs. An entry of 20 breeding rams forward sold to a strong trade with tups keenly sort after by a ring of eager buyers. Tups sold to a top price of £380 twice for Texel shearlings from John Harrison of Greenaway’s Farm and then from Joe Townley of Mearsbeck. Charollais tups sold to a top price of £340 from Alison Lee of Cinder Hill Farm. Breeding sheep sold to a good trade for good sorts with the buyers selective as been seen at other sale throughout the North West. Texel x shearlings sold to a top price of £148 from Tony Chapman of North Lodge who also sold mule shearlings to £140. Aged Mule ewes sold to £110 from W Pinder Jnr of Longstripes. Store lambs sold to a strong trade consider the prime lamb trade. Biggest sorts of store lambs sold between £56 and £58 with longer keep lambs selling around the £50 mark.

815 Prime Lambs to £79 & 180p/kg

Weights Top Av. A smaller entry of prime lambs following last weeks larger entry, with 815 going under the hammer. Standard 32 ½ -39 161.0 155.0 A few buyers missing round the ring today, however this made no difference to trade, coming back at Medium 39 ½ -45 ½ 180.0 152.0 152ppk, exceeding all expectations. JK & BE Townley, Mearsbeck Farm showed a nice pen of 5 Heavy 46 - 51 ½ 159.0 147.0 Texels at 44kg achieving 180ppk or £79. Suffolks sold to £76/head from James Burr, Quernmore for heavey weights, with 45 -46kg suffolks making £68 from J & R Waller, Killington & HJ & BE Kelsall, Gressingham. Mules sold to £63 from W & A Cornall, Bank Farm and Mashams to £61.50 from D Eames, Abbeystead. NWA J36 Sale Reports Thursday 4th September Calves at J36 Rural Auction centre sold to a sharper tarde then what has been seen over previous sales with strong beef calves in strong demand . heifers and bulls both keenly sort after with many people looking for heifers with breeding potential. Black and whites continue to be a similar trade for smaller plainer sorts with better rearing sorts looking a stronger trade as beef price throughout begin to lift again. a mixed back of stirks forward sold to a keen ring of buyers with buyers now in the market looking to purchase stirks but stirk buyers are urged to contact Ian with entries to ensure the right buyers are forward on the day.

An increased ringside of buyers saw CAST/OTM Cattle sold to a strong trade with an overall average of 111p/kg (£976). Leading the sale was a Saler cow selling for 159p/kg from DJ Clarke, Orphan Cragg closely followed by a Fresian Heifer from J & BL Ellis, Hawkrigg End at 157p/kg with a BRB cow 154p/kg from JW Robinson & son, Green Close. Dairy cattle saw an entry of mainly heifers all sell to top price of ÂŁ1950 for a heifer 10 days calved and giving 6 gallons from J & JA Burrow with a pedigree heifer from E & K Bland sellibg at ÂŁ1820. Cows sold to ÂŁ1720 for a fresh second calved cow from R & J Dodgson with mature cows achieving ÂŁ1180. The weekly sale of store lambs saw buyers in attendance from as far afield as the Midlands and Hereford alongside the strong local attendance. Best short keep lambs regularly selling ÂŁ55-ÂŁ58 topping at ÂŁ65 for a pen of texel x from M & D Hatton, Knott End Farm. Mules peaked at ÂŁ58.50 with hill lambs ÂŁ54 for chev x. NWA J36 Sale Reports Tuesday 9th September Prime lambs sell to 193p/kg – Cast Sheep £110

NWA J36 saw 2575 prime sheep sold at its weekly sale with all sheep selling to full value inline with other local centres and the national trend. Prime Lambs sold to a top price of 193p/kg for Char x lambs from J Arnold, Ambleside with a run or Char x and Texel x from JA & J Harper regularly 172p/kg – 178p/kg. Suffolks peaked at 167p/kg from WJ Barker with Beltex from the same home at 175p/kg. A greater number of hill bred lambs coming forward with Mules to 146p/ kg from WM & JE Shuttleworth and horned lambs 153p/kg from MB Platts.

A top price of £82 was achieved for heavy Lleyn lambs from R & J Parkinson with a strong pen of Char x from S & M Cooper selling at £77.50. Texels from JG & PH Thompson sold to £76 with Suffolks £75 from H Halhead & Son. Mules from P & TL Edmondson sold to £66 with Mashams £60 and Swaledales £58. An overall Saturday 20th September market average of 152p/kg was achieved with buyers keenly competing for well finished ‘in spec’ lambs and showing caution to under finished or over weight lambs.
