NWA Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 7th February Limousin week at Lancaster saw a special cash prizes for the highest priced OTM cow (ppk), highest priced pair of store cattle and highest priced Limousin calf eight weeks and under. The highest priced Limousin OTM cow came from David and Margaret Kelly of Nether Hall selling to 179.5ppk twice. In the store section, taking both top price on the day and the top price Limousins were David and Lizzy Whitaker with a pair of Bullocks selling to £1430. The highest price Limousin calf under 8weeks came from Steven Robinson, selling a 1m25day Limousin Heifer realising £340. A larger entry of 91 OTM Cattle forward this week saw all cattle sell to their full value. Cattle hit 199.5ppk on three occasions, firstly with a cast Limousin heifer from Nether Hall Farms of Kirkby Lonsdale who also had cast cows to 179.5ppk. M & RW Stirzaker with a Lim Steer and Ballacutchel Farms with a Blonde Bull. Black and whites sold to a top price of 137.5ppk from TW Nelson & Son of Cockrigg Farm with all black and whites averaging 111.5ppk.

The weekly sale of Store Cattle once again sold to a strong trade with all types and ages of cattle eagerly bid. All vendors left satisfied with the prices achieved. Opening the sale was a Cow and calf from AW & AM Park & Sons, realising £1240. D & E Whitaker topped trade at £1430 with a pair of Lim Bullocks. Ten cattle sold in excess of £1400 and a further 18 selling in excess of £1300. Blue Bullocks sold to a top of £1410 from H Chapman & Son, Middleton. Topping the heifer section was Jim Bracken of Catterall with a Blue selling to £1370. Other heifers sold to £1280 from Chris Hewitt of Forton Bank with a 26month Angus. Angus bullocks topped at £1360 from SJ Brass, Ingleton. Black and White bullocks sold to a top of £1070 for a trio at 29months from TJ Robinson, Milnthorpe. Overall average of £1092 for Bullocks and £994 for Heifers.

A busy morning at Lancaster, with 80 Rearing Calves passing through the calf ring, with a flying trade through all classes. Topping the calf trade was S & IA Robinson, Longber Farm with an 8 week old Blue Bull selling to £475, others from the same home selling to £452 (x2) and £445. Eight Blue bulls forward sold to average £391. A nice run of weaned calves from John Pye of Hatters farm sold to £410 for Limousin Heifers. Native bred calves sold to £400 for Angus Bulls from WN & D Smith & Sons, Cockerham at just short of 8weeks old. Hereford Bulls sold to £340 from Steve Mason, Birkland Barrow. Black and White Calves topped at £115 again from WN & D Smith & Sons with others from JH Towers, Tunstall Hall to £85. Best B&W £80+ with plainer type’s £50-72. A bumper entry of Stirks forward to day with 30 forward. Topping trade was A & L Gardner with a Blue Bull at 7months selling to £655, heifers from the same home selling to £555. Angus Stirks sold to £465 (x2) and Angus bulls to £425 from I Atkinson & Son, Boon Town. A run of beef shorthorns from A & E Clarkson, Thurnham sold to £410 and £400.

Monday 9th February The trade for Prime Hoggs certainly a lot stronger than last week with an overall market average of 191ppk with an SQQ average of 192ppk. Better bred continental lambs selling 200ppk plus topping at 205ppk from JR & M Ayrton of Bambers Farm. Suffolk and other continental pens of sold approximately £40 above their weights. Horned lambs sold to a top of 195ppk from T Longton of Rooten Brook with an overall average of 185ppk.

Less Cast Sheep in the market at Lancaster sold to a continued strong trade with all ewes eagerly bid for by four active buyers around the ring. Cast Texel rams sold to a top of £120 from Andrew Butler of Parks Farm Barn. Big continental ewes in and around the £100 mark topping at £102 from Andrew Wilson of Burrow Heights Farm. Mule ewes still easily selling in the £80’s topping at £88 from T Longton of Rooten Brook.

Prime Bulls continue to sell to national trends at Lancaster. Suckler bred Limousin x bulls from Ann Airey of Old Croft sold to 197.5ppk and 194.5ppk. Beef bred bulls out of dairy sold around 170ppk selling to a top of 177.5ppk from J & D Barton & Son of Calcalds with dairy breed bulls selling to 169.5ppk.

NWA J36 Sale Reports Thursday 5th February The weekly sale of Calves and Stirks at J36 saw a brisk trade for all classes forward. Black and Whites rearers sold to a strong trade topping at £205 from HJ Robinson & Son of Elm Tree with others to £195 from JW & D Robinson & Son of Hollins Farm with better sorts selling for £100 plus. Medium rearing sorts selling £60 plus with an overall average of £64 throughout for Black & Whites with a strong proportion being killing calves selling between £15 and £22. A good show of beef bull calves forward with plenty of purchasers in the market. Blue bulls twice sold to £460 firstly from JW & TE Sharp of Flodder Hall and then from HJ Robinson & Son of Elm Trees with others selling to £450. Plenty of beef bulls selling for £350 plus. Younger beef bulls and medium types sold easily between £250 and £300. Heifer calves were in strong demand with many farmer buyers around the ring looking to purchase heifers with cow making potential. Heifers twice sold to a top price of £370 for Limousins from JW & TE Sharp of Flodder Hall and Brian Wilson of Spout House. Best sorts of heifers sold £320 plus with younger types selling in the early £200’s. Interest is beginning to grow for Stirks with spring just around the corner and more buyers attending the market. Limousin heifers at six months old sold to £490 from B & HM Wilson of Ashteads. Eight month old Black and White steers from DJ Clarke sold to £430 with others at £300. All Dairy Cattle forward sold to full value once again ahead of vendors expectations with an abundance of buyers ringside with many leaving empty handed. A top price of £1750 was paid for Cotegill Poppy 119, bred from 3 generations VG/EX from E & K Bland, Gaisgill with W & CW Dent, Kirkby Stephen achieving £1580. An entry of Friesian type heifers from GM Sedgwick & Son, Sedbergh attracted keen interest selling at £1380, £1350. New calved heifers to £1750 av. £1495. Thursday 19th February – Anniversary Show & Sale (5 Classes). Entries for catalogue close Thursday 12th February. Cast/OTM Cattle sold to 137p/kg for Aberdeen Angus x and British Blue x from J Kitching & Son with others generally 120 – 130p/kg. Dairy cows peaked at 129p/kg from DE & SM Moorhouse. Top price per head was £1030 from B Butterfield & Son. All cows sold to average 111p/kg. OTM heifers sold to 179p/kg from CF Hoggarth & Son and £1031 from HJ Robinson & Son. Increasing numbers of prime cattle saw steers sell to 217p/kg (£1117) and heifers 209p/kg (£1045)

Yearling heifers sold to £835 from GM Redmayne with others £815 from DJ Clarke. Young bulls sold to £795 for 8 month old Limousin x from J Alderson & Son. The weekly sale of Store Hoggs saw best Continentals continue to sell to a premium topping at £75 from JH Barker, Haverthwaite with others regularly £69-£74. Mules sold to £69.50 from A Hodgson & Son. Tup Hoggs sold to £69.50 from J Atkinson & Son. All sold to average £59.64. Sale of store hoggs next week (Thursday 12th Feb) at 11am followed by in lamb sheep to include 50 Texel/Chev ewes due April to Texel, further entries anticipated.

North West Auctions awarded prizes at J36 today for the highest priced Limousins in each section. The calf class was for the highest priced bull or heifer calf 56 days or younger. This was won by Brian Wilson of spout House selling a 32 day old Limousin Bull calf for £380. The winner for the pen of store cattle (2 or more) was Messrs Coward Brothers of Kirkby Hall selling a pair of 20 month old Limousin heifers for £1000 per head. The highest priced Limousin OTM was awarded to HE & RB Taylforth of Riddings Farm selling a ten year old cow to 134.5ppk.

North West Auctions held their weekly sale of primestock at J36 on Tuesday with a larger show of 2,153 prime sheep put before a full compliment of buyers. Prime Hoggs topped at £111 for a single Texel from WT & EM Townley & Son of Higher Westhouse and a top price per kilo of 235.7p/kg. Well fed hoggs once again met a strong trade regularly 200 – 220p/kg. A much larger entry of Hill bred hoggs forward this week with the best 185 – 195p/kg topping at 196.3p/kg for a cracking pen of Scotch Blackface hoggs from Steve Williamson of Ulverston. Even with half the sale being made up of Hill bred sheep, a very pleasing overall average of 187.2p per kilo was achieved.

A larger show of Cast Sheep were forward with the best ewes once again maintaining the recent high rates topping at £135 per head for 4 Texels. Mule ewes to £114 with the majority of heavy Mules between £92 - £96 with leaner sorts £75 - £80. Some excellent runs of Rough Fell ewes were forward selling to £98 from GH Capstick & Sons with others £85 - £95. However, there were a lot more plain Swaledale ewes around today which were a shade easier on the week.
