Weekly report & newsletter NWA J36 RFSBA Annual Show & Sale of Rams North West Auctions held the Annual Prize Show and Sale of Rough Fell Breeding Rams, which saw both vendors and purchasers in attendance from Wales, Midlands and the Northern Counties. All seven show classes saw a fantastic number of rams forward with the task of awarding the championship rosette belonging to Mr Geoff Sedgwick, Sedbergh, who placed RF2635 Cotegill Wise, a Shearling Ram from E & K Bland, Tebay as Champion. He gave reserve champion to a Shearling Ram, RF2550 Birkhaw Wizard from G H Capstick & Sons, Sedbergh. A top price of 3,200gns was achieved for the Champion, with Barugh Watchmego from W Beck & Son, Barugh House, selling at 2,000 gns. 14 rams sold in excess of 1,000gns, which included a Ram Lamb from J Hunter, Galloper Park, selling for 1,600gns and a Lamb from A, M & R Capstick at 1,200gns. Aged Rams peaked at 800gns for RF2267 Catholes Unbelievable from Messrs Clarke Bros., Kendal. NWA Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 10th October A slightly smaller entry of Store Cattle at Lancaster this morning. Animals showing a bit of quality and younger types were a good trade with bigger sorts a fraction easier on the week. Starting the sale this morning was a selection of suckled calves, these sold to a top of £900 for a 9month Lim Bullock from Peter Pye, Marl House. A run of Charollais heifers from David Eames, Abbeystead, sold to £640. Trade was topped by RH Dodgson of Burton in Lonsdale with a pen of four 24-26month Charollais bullocks selling to £1360. Simmentals sold to £1290 from JS Clark & Sons, Godson House with Limousins from the same home selling to £1270. Angus bullocks sold to £1240 from J & M Maudsley & son, Endmoor. British Blues sold to £1180 from GH Speak, Billinge Hall. Friesians sold to a top of £1100 from EJ Hodgson & Son, Lambrigg Head. Heifers sold to £1240 for a single Limousin from J Hayton & Sons, Barrow in Furness. Another good entry of 110 Cast Cows this morning. Trade was slightly easier than previous weeks, in line with other centres. Trade top at 199.5ppk for a Limousin Heifer from Nether Hall Farms, Kirkby Lonsdale. Angus heifers sold to 187.5ppk from P & ME Higginson, Pilling. Limousin Cows sold to 154.5ppk from M & L Preece, High House. Friesian cows sold to a top of 119.5ppk from I & ME Askew, Raw Head to average 83.5ppk. All OTMs forward averaged 102ppk. A mixed show of Calves forward this morning saw strong calves sell to a good trade. Continental calves sold to a top of £370 for a Blue bull from J Bargh & Son. Blue heifers sold to £300 from JR & M Ayrton & Son, Bambers Farm. J Towers & Son, Tunstall Hall showed a smart Angus bull just over 8 weeks, which sold for £355. A run of Limousins from Phillip Halhead, Norbreck Farm, saw bulls sell to £300 & £290 and heifers to £285. Friesians were met by a mixed trade, a smashing run of calves from Wallbank Farms saw Friesians top at £138 with others at £128, £125 & £110. Best black and whites sold in advance of £70 with NWA Lancaster smaller stockier calves £48-£68. Plainer calves in the £30-£40 region. Monday 13th October Prime Lambs sold to a sharper trade than what they finished the previous week averaging 151ppk. A good trade for the quality of lambs forward with a large show of hill bred lambs coming forward to the market. Continental and Suffolk lambs sold between 155ppk and 158ppk topping at 159ppk from Chris Jackson at Forgelands with Texel lambs out of mules. Lambs sold to a top price of £73 from D France of Isle of Skye.

The trade for Cast Sheep sharper than the previous week at Lancaster selling to a top price of £82 for a Suffolk ewe from TB Carter of Lyndale with mule ewes selling to £75 from A & J Rhodes of Kit Brow. Prime Bulls continue to sell to a strong trade at Lancaster with more bulls needed to meet the demand of buyers, selling to a top price of 187.5ppk J & D Barton & Son of Calcalds. All bulls forward averaged 180ppk with the majority of bulls forward being Dairy bred.

NWA J36 Sale Reports Thursday 9th October Calves sold to a top price of £340 for a cracking British Blue heifer from ML & SM Dobson of Espford farm with other British Blue calves selling to £305 from J36 debutant in the calf ring WH Kitching & Son of Hawes Farm. As per usual JW & TE Sharpe of Flodder Hall brought forward some cracking British blue calves selling to a top of £330 with bulls. Black and White calves sold to a top of £95 from M Crowe & Son of Birks Farm with better sorts selling over for £70 and better younger sorts achieving over £50. NWA J36 had 3184 sheep forward at its weekly sale of Store Lambs which included the second sale of Gimmer Lambs. Mule Ewe Lambs sold to £106 for a pen of 20 from JA & CA Gibson, Longwell with other at £93 from M Gibson, Grisedale. Rough Fell Mules sold to £85 from CP Bateman, Docker with BJ Bainbridge selling Mashams at £81. A pleasing trade was had for all classes of Gimmer Lambs with them finding new homes as far afield as Devon, Somerset, South East and throughout the Northern Counties. A run of Texel X from Low Moor Howe Farm Ltd sold to £102 with others at £85 from TMW & H Hodgson, Arklid Farm. Store Lambs sold to a packed ringside of buyers with new faces once again in attendance. Best continental Lambs regularly £57+ topping at £63 from E Parker, Carnforth. Saturday 11th October - Hill Breed Rams The opening sale of Hill Rams at North West Auctions was held on Saturday 11th October. The sale was open to all uplands and hill going rams and a variety of different breed coming forward. A new sale that has a large potential. A pre-sale show was held for the Swaledales which was kindly judged by John Nutter of Hurst Green. The champion rosette was awarded to the Shearling ram from John Harrison of Westerham which went on to sell to David Cousins of High Bridgestone. The show classes also included a best conformation which was awarded to a powerful shearling ram from J Hunter of Tebay. Swaledale rams sold to a top price of £280 from J Hunter of Tebay with a shearling. Five shear rams from David Cousins of High Bridgestone to £220. An entry of Herdwick rams forward sold to a top price of £200 from Chris Champion Swaledale form JH & CL Harrison, Westerham. with Judge Brown of Deepdale Hall. Teeswaters sold to a strong demand topping at £240 Mr John Nutter from David Waine with Cheviots selling to £200 from David Cousins of High Bridgestone. Following the opening sale it has been seen as a sale that has plenty of potential to grow.

NWA J36 Sale Reports Tuesday 14th October Pigs Sell to £152 at J36 Monthly Pig Sale The monthly sale of pigs saw an entry of over 100 forward with new vendors and purchasers in attendance. Prime pigs sold to a top price of £152 from R Strong, Kirkbride, wither others at £140 and £138. Strong Stores sold to £55 for Welsh White gilts from M Bennett with Gloucester Old Spot weaners £48 from S Lawton. Cast Sows sold to £130 with boards also £130 from JH Ivinson, Penrith. North West Auctions also held their weekly sale of Primestock at J36 Rural Auction Centre on Tuesday where over 3,000 prime sheep were put before a ringside of 15 buyers.

Prime Lambs topped at £92 for a Charollais lamb from Mr John Stott of Crosscrake and a top price per kilo of 179p/kg was paid for Texel x lambs from Messrs Dean & Brennand of Clapham. A much larger entry of Mule lambs came forward topping at £66 per head from JA Bennett of Longsleddale, with plenty £63-£65 and averaging £60.84 for all Mule lambs sold. Handy weights 40-42kg lambs were the easiest to sell today and plenty more of this weight range could have been sold. Prime Lamb Top Prices:
