Weekly report & newsletter NWA J36 Christmas Show & Sale of Dairy Cattle & Rearing Calves Calves The Christmas show and sale of Calves at J36 had a fantastic entry of quality calves in front of the judge Mr Alan Parnaby. The Bull beef calf class was the strongest class seen for some time and was an extremely close class with the first prize being awarded to S Postlethwaite of Paddock View with a British Blue which went onto win the Championship. A nice entry of calves forward for the Heifer class being won by Brian Wilson of Spout House with a Limousin and the dairy bull class was won by TK Robinson and Son. A congratulation goes to all vendors who entered the show on the quality of calves they brought forward. Also North West Auctions would thank to thanks todays show sponsors Jim Peat Agriculture for their continued support. An entry of 125 calves and stirks sold to a strong trade throughout with plenty of buyers around the ring eager to buy all types of calves. As per usual at J36 beef calves were eagerly sought after and the Champion Bull calf sold to £460 to Jim Whitworth of Bolton le Sands. Beef bull calves regularly sold into the £300’s with better sorts selling around the £400 mark. A consignment of 8 to 10 week old British blues from HJ Robinson & Son of Elm Tree Farm sold to a strong demand at £475 and £460. The first prized heifer calf sold to £360 from Brian Wilson of Spout House with other beef heifer calves selling from mid £200’s into the early £300’s easily. A younger show of Black and Whites today saw better sorts getting away between £60 and £80, with young rearing sorts £40 to £60 and most others selling over the £20 easily.

Dairy The Annual Christmas show and sale of dairy cattle saw, what was considered, the best show of cattle forward at J36 which attracted new customers from throughout the northern counties. Judging was conducted by Mr Andrew Wood, Ulverston, who had a superb show of cattle put before him in all 3 show classes. The championship rosette was awarded to a pedigree heifer, which had earlier stood first in a very strong show of heifers from PD & BS Lawrence, Meathop. The heifer was 21 days calved and currently giving 34lts selling to FG & GCL Stephenson Ltd for a final bid of £1780. The reserve rosette was awarded to the first prize cow from GM & AM Wilson, fresh into her 3rd lactation and giving 39lts she achieved £1500 selling to SH & LE Birkett. The best pair was won by J & M Robinson showing a pair of pedigree heifers. The sales leading price was £1920 for a heifer 10days calved from J & JA Burrow with others at £1820 from MJ & H Atkinson and R Lawson & Son. Cows peaked at £1580 from JW & D Robinson & Sons.

NWA Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 12th December The weekly sale of Store Cattle at Lancaster sold to a continued strong trade with an entry over 273 forward. A consignment of Limousin steers from J Capstick and Sons of Whicham Hall sold to £1450 and £1410 with a pen of five steers from the same home selling for £1380. This was closely followed by regular consignor Andrew Clarkson of Cock Hall selling a Limousin steer for £1370. Plenty of well fleshed steers selling over £1200 with better sorts hitting the £1300 mark and over. Heifers twice sold to a top price of £1180 firstly from P Lawrenson of Walmsley Fold and then from JA & R Geldard & Sons of Low Foulshaw. Top price cast cow came from JA & R Geldard & Sons of Low Foulshaw selling a Limousin for 139.5ppk. Dairy cows sold to a top of 121.5ppk from GA & A Atkinson of Abbotson Farm. Meatier better sorts of cows selling 110ppk plus. OTM heifers sold to a top of 141.5ppk from JH Towers & Sons of Tunstall Hall. A smaller entry of Calves this morning combined with a ring of buyers led to a blistering trade for all forward. Native calves were the choice of the day topping at £380 (twice) for Angus bulls at 36days old, from Wallbank Farms, with another at £360 from the same home. Heifers sold to £230 for Angus’ again from Messers Wallbank. Hereford calves sold to £320 for a 19day old bull from Steve Mason of Birkland Barrow. Young blue bulls sold well topping at £350 (twice) from John Bland, Arnside tower. Dairy calves sold to full value, with Montbelliardes selling to £110 from EW Singleton. The increase in prime lamb trade means Store Lambs continue to be in strong demand. A small entry forward sold to a strong trade topping at £74 for short keep Suffolk lambs from Peter Thornton of Cliftons Farm with Texel’s from the same home selling to £69. Lancaster Monthly Dairy Sale Stardale take Champion and Reserve at December Sale The final sale of dairy cattle for 2014 saw a nice entry of cows and heifers forward. Judging this month was conducted by regular sale supporter Mark Hewitt of Cockerham. A good show of heifers were put before the judge who awarded both the Champion and Reserve Rosette to James Burrow of the Stardale herd. In the ring, trade was very mixed with the best of heifers on offer regularly over £2000. The Champion, Lot 17, Stardale Wyman Vaakje 6, bred form three generations of VG and EX cows went on to sell for £2300 to the judge. The reserve, Lot 16, Stardale Stellation Vaakje 2, a fantastically well-bred heifer from nine generations of EX Cows and supported by numerous lactations exceeding 10,000litres saw frantic bidding, before realising a final bid, and top price of the day, of £2650, again selling to the judge. Trade was, as expected, slightly easier for all classes, with straight milky heifers generally around the £1500 mark. Buyers were looking for milk today with plainer sorts and those yielding less hard to place. Only two cows forward sold to £1550 for a second calver from AR & J Whitlow, Preesall. In total 8 heifers sold in excess of £2000 with an overall average of £1560. One bull forward from J Burrow & Son, Stardale Arnside, sold for a final call of £1000 to Messers Nelson, Milnthorpe.

NWA Lancaster Sale Reports Monday 15th December Another good entry of Prime Lambs this morning with 960 forward. Trade similar to last week with an overall average of 185ppk. Lambs sold to a top of 210ppk for 42kg Texels from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof. Top price per head came from PW & DW Roskell with two heavy weight Charollais selling to £93. Suffolks sold to £84 from A Shephard, Muffy Platts Farm. Mules sold to £80 from P & ME Higginson, Out Rawcliffe with the majority £33-£35 over their weight. A good run of well meated Charollais lambs from P Lawrenson, Brindle sold to £92. Texels from at AT Alcock, Inskip sold to £90, with the main of the Texels £34-£36 over their weight. Horned lambs sold to £74 from W & A Cornall, Bank Farm.

Mules topped at £84 from M & RW Stirzaker, Milnthorpe and average £66.54. Horned sheep sold well, topping at £66 from FK & F Woodhouse, Fell End. Texels sold to £103 from AT Alcock. Overall cast sheep average of £66.21.

Black and white cows topped at 121.5p/kg for J & M Cockett of Ingleton with a top price per head of £1,118.52 for a big black and white cow from W Garnett & Son of Ackenthwaite. Continental cows sold to 151.5p/kg for a Limousin cow from W G Wilkinson of Coniston with another at 147.5p/kg from the same home. The majority of Continental cows were 125-140p/kg. A good ringside of buyers ensured that all Store Cattle sold to a very strong trade. Heifers and calves sold to £1,580 for a Limousin x heifer with a heifer calf at foot from S T Birkett of Carnforth. Bullocks sold to £1,110 for a 15 m.o. Limousin from S J & M Richardson & Son of Lupton with a pen of 16 m.o. Limousin bullocks from T M W & H Hodgson of Nibthwaite sell for £1,070. Heifers sold to £970 for a black Limousin heifer from Messrs Packham of Docker, with others at £960 from T M W & H Hodgson of Nibthwaite.

Store Lambs sold to recent heights as plenty more could have easily been sold with buyers going away short of numbers. A leaner entry of lambs forward saw short keep lambs selling £64 plus topping today at £69.50 from J Dixon of Flookburgh with a pen of Texel’s. most pens of lambs selling towards £60 with a few pens of very long keep lambs selling in the forties. Overall a good trade throughout for the lambs forward with a market average of £59 being achieved.

North West Auctions held their weekly sale of primestock at J36 where, once again, a show of 2974 prime Standard 32 ½ -39 219.1 185.0 sheep were forward to a full ringside of buyers. Medium 39 ½ -45 ½ 214.3 182.1 After the highs of last week’s Prime Lamb trade all classes of lambs would be easier on the week due to 178.0 165.2 large shows of lambs out up and down the country with heavy lambs being the hardest to sell. at £92 per head for a pair of Texel x lambs from L Butcher of Millom with a top price per kilo of 219.1p/kg for a pen of Texel lambs from TR Prickett of Hutton Roof. An overall market average of 182.73p/kg was achieved. A lot more small Horned lambs were forward today with the majority being 180-190p/kg with a top of 200p/kg for a pen of 35kg Swaledale lambs from Frishwick Bros of Longsleddale.
