Weekly Report & Newsletter NWA Lancaster’s Special 50th Anniversary Show & Sale of Dairy Cattle Anniversary Show sees 61 head forward with heifers to £2750 The 50th Anniversary Dairy Show and Sale at Lancaster saw a strong entry of 61 cows and heifers forward from both local and travelled vendors. A full ring side of buyers gathered in anticipation, from through the North of England and South Wales. The presale judge John Lawson, Bank End, Cockerham had a strong line-up of cows and heifers in all classes. After much deliberation the Reserve Champion rosette was awarded to lot 48, Saltoke Jeeves Rebecca 158, bred by Ian & Richard Gorst, Hole of Ellel, and show by son Tom Gorst, this Ked Outside Jeeves sired heifer, who took first place in the halter led class, sold giving 32litres, realised a final call of £2150, selling to the judge. The Champion rosette was award to T Cowell, with lot 63, Whitecarr Alexander Lester, she took the first place rosette in the non-halter led class and just over a month calved, giving 33litres and bred from two generations of VG cows, achieved the top price of the day of £2750, selling to an undisclosed bidder. In the cow class, taking the first place rosette was Shoreline Seaver Bridget, 12days calved and giving 40litres sold for £1400 to Graham Stephenson, Deansbiggin. Top price cow came from MJ & H Atkinson, Quernmore with Wyredale Shotgun Kathy, with three generations of VG breeding behind her and giving 45litres, she achieved £1680. On the whole cows and heifers with depth of pedigree and strong lactations supporting them sold well with seven selling in excess of £2000. Strong, milky heifers for the commercial dairy farmer were sought after and regularly achieved £1700-£1980. An average of £1625 for all heifers and £1520 for all cows forward here at Lancaster. In the final class, the best pairs, was awarded to Lots 7 & 8 from the Stardale Herd, Stardale Story Stella 2 and Stardale Alchemy Stella. NWA Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 13th February Cast Cows continued to sell to a brisk trade for all classes. More cows could have easily been sold to vendor’s financial benefit. Vendors are strongly urged to forward cows over the coming weeks to meet the strong demand from buyers. An impressive overall average of 121ppk was achieved for all cows forward. Best black and whites sold to a top of 154.5ppk from Cote Farm Partnership of Nether Kellet with fed black and white cows achieving between 130ppk and 140ppk with an average of 115ppk for all black and whites. Very few sold below 100ppk only lean boning cows. There were very few beef cows in the market today but topped at 169.5ppk for Limousin x cows from Chris Alty of Moss House Farm.

The impressive Store Cattle trade continued at Lancaster. All types of cattle were eagerly bid for with Black and whites looking noticeably dearer on the day. Limousin steers topped the market at £1,450 for a trio from the Capstick Family of Whicham Hall. Cattle that are fit and well fleshed are in strongest demand but buyers now beginning to think about spring and Lancaster vendors looking to full sheds to replace outgoing cattle mean that younger long keep cattle are also wanted. Once again vendors left extremely happy with their trade.

A nice entry of Calves and Stirks this morning with the briskest trade seen for some time. A ring full of buyers ensured all classes of calves sold to full value with young month old Blue bulls from Richard and Johnny Hoggarth selling to £330. Older blues at eight weeks sold to £440 from MJ Fell, Newton. Native calves in strong demand as usual here at Lancaster with Hereford heifers selling to £310 from Drinkall Bros, Abbeystead. Angus calves to £250 for heifers from Jones Sandvilla. Older weaned Friesian calves to £210 from G & ME Woodhouse & Sons. Six week sorts in strong demand selling to £132. A very strong average of £142.78 for all black and whites forward. Stirk trade remains strong, with a pair of 4-5month Angus Bulls to £522 from A Shepherd, Pilling and Blue Bulls from the same home to £490. Blue heifers to £470 G & ME Woodhouse & A Shepherd.

Monday 9th February - Anniversary Show & Sale of Primestock The 50th anniversary sale of Prime Hoggs had a pre-sale show that was kindly judged by Alex Riley on behalf of Riley Brothers of Dunnockshaw. Show classes for pairs of Lowland and upland breeds of prime hoggs. The Lowland class was won by Andrew and Charlie Butler of Hambleton who also had second in the class. In the upland class the winning rosette was awarded to Richard Cardwell of Cardwell farms with a pair of Cheviot lambs who also won second prize. A special thank you goes to the Prime Hogg sponsor Andrew Thompson on behalf of Alan Thompson Haulage, Carnforth. The weekly sale of Prime Hoggs at Lancaster had an overall sale average of 186ppk a few pence less than the previous week. The champion pen of Hoggs sold to a top price of £140 (292ppk) from Andrew Butler of Parks Barn selling to M Allam of Lancashire Direct Halal. Better bred continental hoggs selling well over 200ppk with first cross continental hoggs selling between 188ppk and 200ppk. Mules sold to a top of £88 a head from WI & A Atkinson of Holme House with all mules forward selling to an average of 173ppk.

Once again all classes of Cast Sheep sold to a strong trade with more ewes needed to meet what is a strong demand from the buyers at Lancaster. Better sorts of continental cast ewes sold into the one hundred and teens selling to a top of £118 from JR & M Ayrton & Son of Bambers Farm with slightly less continentals selling around the £100 mark. Mule ewes sold to £87 from J Lamb of Old Glasson with mule ewes averaging £86. An overall market average of £84.62.

The bull beef trade continues to hold firm with the trade at Lancaster in keeping with other local centres. An entry of 10 Prime Bulls forward sold to a market average 195ppk. Suckler bred beef bulls sold in and around 200ppk selling to a top of 209.5ppk numerous times.

NWA J36 Sale Reports Thursday 12th February The weekly sale of Calves at J36 saw all classes sell to a strong trade with all types eagerly bid for and all vendors leaving pleased with their trade. Beef calves, once again, keenly sought after at J36 with three month old British Blue bulls selling to a top of £520 from RJ & KR Wilkinson of High Foulshaw with others from the same home selling to £450 and £440. All Black and whites forward this week were bobby calves selling between £15 and £30. Stirks at J36 sold in line with the strong prices achieved at local markets, with 3 to 4 month old Limousins out of suckler cows selling to a top of £520 for heifers from A Brown of Low Laithe Barn with Belted Galloway x bulls of the same age selling to £450. The weekly sale of Store Hoggs saw best short keeper sell to £73.50 for Texel x from I L Dixon of Cantsfield and £70 for Suffolks from BJ Bowness of Kendal. Mashams sold to £71.50 from PG Thornton, Scorton with Mules to £68 from G & ID Postlethwaite, Howgill. Hill lambs sold to £50 for Rough Fell, Herdwicks to £46 and Swaledales to £44. Medium keep hoggs generally £55 - £60 with smaller sorts £42-48. Tups sold to £60 with most achieving £52-£57 A few gimmer hoggs forward saw Mules sell to £102 and Mashams to £78. All hoggs sold averaged £54.25.

A special sale of in lamb Breeding Sheep including the flock dispersal of breeding ewes from W Huddleston & Son of Borrans Farm. The flock dispersal created plenty of interest with all classes of ewes selling very well. Mule ewes especially in strong demand with one and two crop ewes selling to a top of £190. Others at the same age sold to £180 and £175. Aged mule ewes sold to £148 with all in-lamb Mules selling to a market average of £143. Texel ewes slightly harder to sell but still selling to a strong trade topping at £150 for shearlings and one crops and other pens achieving £140 (x2) and £137 with all ages of Texels forward selling to an average of £118. A selection of a geld Mule hoggs sold to £102. Plenty more sheep could have been sold on the day to vendor’s advantage with many potential buyers in the market looking to purchase in-lamb sheep of all classes to replace out-going geld ewes. Tuesday 17th February - Anniversary Show & Sale of Prime Hoggs North West Auctions held their weekly sale of prime sheep at J36 on Tuesday which also included the Anniversary Prize Show & Sale of Pairs of Prime Hoggs. The show was very ably judged by Mr Simon Jennar from the Anglo Dutch Meat Company who awarded the championship rosette to a pair of Texel x hoggs shown by father & son Edward & Andrew Atkinson of Stubb Farm, Endmoor. The champion hoggs went onto sell for £112 per head to Mr Robert Skelton of Cockermouth.

Once again all classes of cast sheep met a strong trade topping at £138 for a Texel ram from T Edmondson of Ulverston. Mule ewes continue to sell at a cracking rate with the best meated ewes £95 - £100 with leaner sorts £80 - £85. However, buyers are very cautious of over fat sheep. Horned ewes sold to £84 for Swaledales from RS Harker & Son of Grayrigg and Rough Fells sold to £94 from GR Park & Son of Whinfell. More sheep are required every week for a full ringside of buyers.
