Weekly Report & Newsletter Lancaster Monthly Dairy Sale Monday 16th March A reduced entry for the March dairy sale was met by a full ringside of active buyers. The pre-sale show was judged by Penrith based breeder Tony Hunter who awarded both the reserve and champion rosette to Messers Inman of Strickland Hill. Taking the Champion rosette was Lot 23, Witherslack Sam Vall, bred from an EX90 (4yr) dam she later sold giving 30litres, realising the top price of the day of £2450. The reserve champion was awarded to the first place cow, Lot 24, a third calver, sired by Wabash-Way Evolve, giving 42litres she realised £2120. The best pair of heifers was awarded to T Cowell with Lots 20 & 22, these two later sold for £2250 and £1720 respectively. Trade was a fraction selective with the best pedigrees and heifers yielding well achieving a premium. Three cows forward averaged £1475 and all pedigree heifers averaged £1690. With twelve active buyers’ ringside, more cattle could have been sold to the vendors advantage. The April sale is Monday 20th, here at Lancaster.

Lancaster Machinery Sale Saturday 14th March Lancaster Machinery and Implement sale had a sale day entry of over 350 lots and once again attracted a large crowd considering many local farmers lambing and also three other machinery sales in the local area. Local farm machinery met strong demand with more large machinery forward than seen at previous Lancaster sales. Majority of items met a good trade with Silo trailers selling to £2,000 and Stoll rake selling to £1520. Livestock handling equipment always meets a strong demand at these sales, with lamb adopters being eagerly sought after. A quantity of Garden tools and hand tools always meets a strong crowd of buyers and eagerly bid for. The next Machinery and Implement sale including a section for grassland machinery and also Household furniture will be held on Saturday 16th May 2015 in conjunction with 1818 Auctioneers. Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 13th March A continued strong trade for all shapes and sizes of Store Cattle at Lancaster. Plenty of well grown cattle in the market carrying flesh sold to a top price of £1450 for a Charolais from David Moorhouse of High House Farm with Limousin steers from the same home selling to £1420. An impressive pen of five Angus steers from Neil Davis sold to £1380. Heifers sold to a top of £1220 for a couple of British blues from J & M Cottam of Hill Top. Black and White steers sold to a top price of £1190 from GR & B Mason of Hillock Farm. Black and white steers sold to an average of £861. Young store cattle continue to be in high demand at Lancaster with all breeds and types needed to meet the ever strong demand from buyers. All steers forward sold to a market average of £1041 with heifers averaging £927. A shortage of OTM Cattle forward to meet the requirements of a ring full of active buyers with all classes of cattle selling well. Cast cows once again selling to a firm trade maybe a fraction back on previous weeks. Cows twice sold to a top price of 154.5ppk, Limousins from EJ Ward & Sons of Intack Farm and Friesians from A Kirkby & Co of Gulf Farm with other meaty cows selling in the late 130’s. A shortage of meaty cows in the market saw cows out of the parlour selling 120ppk plus. An overall average of 116ppk with black and whites averaging 117ppk. OTM steers sold to a top price of 204.5ppk for British Blues from David Moorhouse of High House Farm. The weekly sale of Calves and Stirks attract 41 this week with an abundance of buyers around the ring. Beef calves continue to be in strong demand with all ages of calves eagerly sought after. A run of British blue calves from Stephen Robinson of Longber sold to a top of £445 for a bull with others to £442. British blue heifer calves from the same home twice sold to £405. Native bred cattle always meets a strong demand at Lancaster, Hereford bulls calves from Drinkall Bros of Catshaw sold to £385. Black and white bull calves sold to a mixed trade. Young rearing calves were in strong demand selling anywhere between £50 and £70 with older calves nearer weaning selling between £80 and £110 with best types from WN & D Smith & Sons of Cocker House achieving £172. A smaller entry of stirks this week saw Limousin heifers from David Whitaker of Little Fell sell to £490 at 6 months old. Monday 16th March Trade for Prime Hoggs at Lancaster remains strong, averaging 200ppk peaking at 216pk for a pen of 10 Texel Hoggs from J Bargh & Son. Top price per head came from the same home at £97 for heavy weight Texels. Horned hoggs sold well also with blackfaces selling to £86/ head from WM Pye, Tarnwater and Cheviots to £95/head from Cardwell farms Ltd. More hoggs needed to meet the demand of buyers. Spring Breeding Sheep Sale A stronger trade for all classes of sheep with lambs at foot at Lancaster with sheep and lamb vendors urged to forward them to Lancaster with more needed to fulfil the requirement from a busy ring of buyers. More younger ewes in the market today saw Texel x shearlings suckling young singles sell to £190 and £180 from Tarn Farm. One crop Texel ewes suckling twins sold to £210 from JW & SE Drinkwater of Conder Mill. One crop mule ewes suckling twins sold to £195 from Martin Huddleston. Older ewes continue to sell well and meet a strong demand from the buyers at Lancaster, mule ewes with twins sold to £195 from A Shepherd of Muffy Platts. An overall average of £66 a life was achieved.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 12th March The weekly sale had an entry of 40 Calves and Stirks. Calves continue to sell to a strong trade, a trio of Hereford Bull calves from R & EA Gardner of Barrowfield selling to £350 with others achieving £330 and £320. British blue heifers sold to a top of £260 from Barker farms with others selling to £240. Young beef calves met strong demand with two week beef bull calves selling to £235 from MH & SJ Morris of Wraysholme Tower. A young show of Black and White bull calves in the market topped at £82 for 2½ week olds from HJ Robinson of Elm Tree, with other young rearing types selling to £45. Small plainer types of Holstein bull calves sold between £15 and £30. A mixed bag of stirks forward, selling to £490 for British Blue steers, with suckler bred Angus bulls achieving £480. Black and White bull stirks sold to £250. With the onset of lambing a reduced entry of Dairy Cattle forward this week selling to £1450 for a Friesian type from GM Sedgwick & Son with others at £1350. Next sale is Thursday 26th March to include special sale of dairy youngstock. Tuesday 17th March Spring Breeding Sheep Sale The weekly sale of sheep with lambs saw 69 forward with many buyers leaving empty handed. Texel x ewes (2 crop) with twins sold to £215 with Suffolk x (2 crop) with twins sold at £212. All mules forward were older (3 crop upwards) and regularly achieving £185, £188 all with twin lambs at foot. Overall average of £65 per life. North West Auctions also held their weekly sale of primestock at J36 on Tuesday where an entry of 1200 prime sheep sold to a very strong trade. There was a shortage of the very best Prime Hoggs and these topped at 229p/kg with the majority of commercial Texel & Suffolk cross hoggs regularly 200 – 210p/kg. A tremendous run of 100 Scotch Blackface hoggs from Williamson Bros., of Ulverston averaged 202.76p/kg and sold to £86.50 per head. Mule hoggs topped at 207.10p/kg with a top price of £89 per head. The top price per head for hoggs on the day was £108 for Texels from GM & A Jackson of Little Eccleston. An overall market average of 192.14p/kg was achieved with an SQQ of 196.31p/kg.
