Weekly Report & Newsletter ‘Perfect Pairs’ Show & Sale of Prime Spring Lambs Lancaster Auction Mart Monday 30th March The opening sale of spring lambs which included the Easter Show attracted 34 lambs forward kindly sponsored Rumenco. The pre-sale show was expertly judged by Michael Lomax who awarded the first prize rosette to John Geldard of Low Foulshaw Farm with a pair Charollais lambs. The opening sale created plenty of interest from buyers with a couple of fresh buyers around the ring looking for spring lambs. The trade topped at £128 for the first prized lambs from to John Geldard of Low Foulshaw Farm with the second prized lambs from Andrew Rowlinson of Low Hall Beck also achieving £128. Spring lambs sold to 306ppk and 303ppk from PW & DW Roskell of Springfield Farm. The average for spring lambs was 269ppk. Show Results:

Show & Sale of Ewes & Shearlings with Lambs at Foot The bad weather over the weekend had taken its toll on many sheep and lamb families looking weathered and not at their best, leaving a few buyers’ very cautious with the poor weather set to continue. The spring show of Ewes and Shearlings with lambs was kindly judged by George Bell of Kirkby Lonsdale and sponsored by Rumenco. The champion rosette was awarded to John Fox of Blackwood End with a pen of 4 crop Texel x ewes sucking ¾ Texel twin lambs selling for £218. The trade was topped at £225 for Texel shearlings suckling strong twin Suffolk lambs from TM Townley of Knowsley Farm. Many older ewes sucking twins sold between £55 and £60 a life. Ewes sucking singles all sold £70 a life plus. Monday 6th April 2015 - Sale as normal including 64 Families of sheep and lambs entered to date. Show Results:

J36 Rural Auction Centre Tuesday 31st March NWA J36 held it’s prize show of Prime Spring Lambs, which were judged by Mr A Denney, Lyth. The prize winning pair were some 45kg pure Charollais lambs from J A & R Geldard & Sons, which later sold for £130 to Irvings Butchers. Lambs also peaked at 288p/kg, again from Messrs Geldard. Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 27th March A very similar entry of Cast Cows forward this morning with 65 passing through the ring. Trade for all classes of cows was good with the top price per kilo coming from TM & D Dobson, Crosthwaite with a Beef Shorthorn cow selling to 164.5ppk. Also at the same price was a Charolais heifer from F & IM Potter, Grayrigg. Top price per head came from H Wright & Son, Helsington with a Friesian heifer grossing £1176. Friesians sold to a top price per kilo of 139.5ppk from Ken and Andrew Woodhouse, Ellel and EE Thornton & Son, Heaton. Overall average of 123ppk for all forward. More cows required to meet the demands of buyers.

Another good entry of Store Cattle at the weekly Lancaster today. A real nice run of Limousin bullocks from A & H Duckett of Higher Bartle sold to £1360 with others from H Chapman and Son to the same price. The very best cattle this morning were a fraction easier this week with buyers anxious of abattoir deadweight prices easing. Black and White cattle were dearer on the week, topping at £1040 at 25months from TJ Robinson. Angus’ sold to £1240 for a pen of 4 from L Parsons & Son, Levens. Younger grazing cattle also a good trade with buyers starting to look for cattle ready for turn out. Overall average of £1009 for all bullocks and £950 for all heifers.

A far better entry of Calves and Stirks this week with 43 going under the hammer and a 100% clearance achieved. Continental calves sold to £445 for an 8 week Blue Bull from W & S Airey, closely followed by another Blue bull from Stephen Robinson selling to £440. Blue heifers from the same home sold to £360. Native bred calves were eagerly bid for with Steve Mason selling three Hereford heifers to £320 & £315 at only 5 weeks old. Black and white calves forward in mixed quality, selling to a top of £110 from David & Eileen Wallbank, younger fleshy calves £60-£80 with plainer sorts up to £40. More black and white calves urgently required. Stirks sold to £695 for Hereford steers from David Eames, Hereford Bulls to £540 from JR Newsham & Son.

Monday 30th March Lancaster followed national trends at end of the previous week with the Prime Hogg prices reducing to the previous week. The trade was noticeably back with many pens £3-£4 back on the week with an overall sale average of 186ppk with SQQ hoggs average 188ppk. Better quality lambs still sold in excess of £2 per kilogram topping at 212ppk from Bargh Contractors. A lot of heavier lambs in the market which were harder to sell than seen over previous weeks.

A larger entry of Cast Sheep forward at Lancaster saw the trade continue to be as strong. Cast rams sold to a top price of £155 for a Texel from DJ Sykes of Clay Gap Farm with Charollais’s from AG Stafford of Birch Croft making £142. Once again fit continental ewes sold easily to and above £120 topping at £134 from Andrew Wilson cautious of over fat ewes with all mules averaging £93.

J36 Sale Reports Monthly Machinery - Wednesday 25th March Monthly sale of machinery at J36 saw over 450 lots entered for the sale with seasonal items selling to the keenest demand with a Pratley Sheep Handling System selling to £4300. Grassland machinery was beginning to attract interest with a large selection of chain harrows (£140), rollers (£300) and fertilizer spreaders (£500) offered for sale. New calved heifers sold to £1560 from E & K Bland, Penrith with many buyers ringside for new calved cattle. A special spring sale of youngstock attracted buyers from throughout the northern counties. In-calf heifers from JB Moore, Allithwaite sold to £1500 with others at £1400 from AE & M Hayhurst, Natland. Bulling heifers sold to £1900 from W & S Airey, Whittington. Maiden heifers from WH & JR Robinson, Nook sold at £890 also selling stirks at £770 and £760.

The weekly sale of Calves attracted an entry of 39 calves and once again all classes were keenly sought after. A consignment of 10 week old British Blues from SW & K Metcalfe of Holme House sold to a top of £450 with other strong bulls selling easily over £400. Heifer calves sold to £400 and £390. Limousin bull calves 5 to 6 weeks old sold to £360 and £355. Once again a young show of Black and White bull calves sold to a top of £75 for a Friesian type with other young calves between £30 and £50. The monthly sale of Stirks had a reduced entry than expected with a few vendors unable to get to the sale with the bad weather conditions and many people busy lambing. There was a variety of stirks forward met by a ring full of buyers looking to purchase all types. British Blue steers sold to a top of £695 for 10 month olds from HG Spensley & Son of Barnard Castle with heifers selling to £660. A mixture of Black and whites forward saw them sell to their value.

Tuesday 31st March Prime hoggs sold to £100 from M Crowe & Son, Witherslack, with others £95 from S & M Cooper. A market average of 181p/kg was achieved, with buyers cautious of ‘out of spec’ hoggs. Well finished hoggs achieving a premium in the 39-44kg category.
