Weekly report & newsletter NWA J36 Breeding Sheep - Friday 26th September Swaledale The annual prize show and sale of Swaledale Gimmer Lambs, Shearlings and Draft Ewes sold to a strong trade with an abundance of customers around the ring eager to purchase Swaledale ewes. The pre-sale judging was conducted by John Whitfield of Raw Ridding. The overall champion pen of Swaledale sheep was awarded to the draft ewes from JA Alderson of Barras Farm which sold for £146. Swaledales, three times sold to a top price of £150, firstly from JA Alderson of Barras Farm with the first prize pen of Swaledale Gimmer shearlings, with aged ewes from G & S M Stephenson of The Gables and Fishwick Bros of Middle Sadghyll also achieving £150. Plenty of best pens of shearlings and ewes sold over £130 mark. Swaledale gimmer lambs sold to a top price of £85 for the first prized pen from J Hunter of Tebay. Swaledale gimmer shearlings sold to an average of £103.43, Swaledale ewes averaged £96.02 and Swaledale gimmer lambs averaged 51.22. Champion Swaledales, Pen of 10 Ewes from Alan & Fiona Alderson, Barras
Rough Fell Ewes sell to £330 The annual sale saw a catalogued entry of over 1,300 breeding ewes attract a large crowd of eager buyers from throughout the UK, with many first time purchasers present. The judging was conducted by Mr D Douthwaite, who had 4 classes presented before him. He awarded the Championship rosette to the first prize pen of Shearlings from G H Capstick & Sons, Birkhaw, which were later purchased by W Moore of Staffordshire. The Reserve Championship rosette was awarded to the first prize pen of Gimmer Lambs from Messrs Clarke Brothers, selling to V R Guy, Tebay. The first prize pen of Ewes (3 crop), again from G H Capstick & Sons, later sold to W Moore, Staffordshire. A feature of the sale was a new class for pens of 3, which was won by Messrs Clarke Brothers, with Shearlings which later sold for £175 to H R & S Bland, Gaisgill. The flock dispersal on behalf of Messrs Clarke Brothers, attracted keen interest from breeders which saw 1 crop ewes sell to a top price of £330 and 2 crop £165. NWA Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 26th September Another busy day at NWA Lancaster today, with 711 cattle passing through all three rings The Annual Prize Show of Bullocks saw a number of pens forward for judging, carried out by Greg & David Foster. Taking all three rosettes was Stuart & Joan Cornthwaite, Brookhouse. The first prize pen, 4 British Blue Bulls, receiving the Evan Nelson Trophy, went on to sell for the day’s top price of £1400. Limousins & Simmentals from the same home sold to £1300. On the whole, a slightly plainer show of Store Cattle in comparison to previous week with trade reflected in the quality of cattle forward. Young sorts were in strong demand, with Richard & Allan Close’s consignment of 8-11month British Blues selling to a top of £740 for 9-10month bullocks and £670 for 9-10month heifers. Another large consignment from FG & GCL Stephenson of Kirkby Lonsdale saw the run of 50 top at £1040 for Herefords and a pen of younger British Blues to £960.

Calves Sell to £480 for 1month old British Blue Bull Similar numbers to last week with just over 50 Calves forward. Trade was topped by Wallbank Farms, Abbeystead with a cracking blue bull at 33days selling to £480, credit to Eileen Wallbank for continuously showing exceptional calves at Lancaster. Trade for continental calves was strong with other blue bulls at 8weeks from SH & LE Birkett, selling to £440 (x2) and £410 from G & ME Woodhouse & Son, Ellel. All blue bulls forward averaged £399. Herefords sold to £380 from Steve Mason, Birkland Barrow, young Angus calves from TM Townley to £150 for bulls and heifers. Friesian bull calves a little sticky, topping at £100 from WN & D Smith, Cockerham. Better sorts £60+, plainer sorts £30-£45, averaging £41.27.

A good turnout of Cast Cows this morning, with 108 forward. A plain show saw trade similar to previous weeks. Topping at 171.5ppk or £1405 was a Limousin Cow from Nether Hall Farms. Friesians topped at 141.5ppk twice with heifers from Messers Inman, Strickland Hill. Black and white cows sold to a top of 124.5ppk from TE Kidd, Booth Hall. A larger entry of just over 1200 Prime Lambs forward at Lancaster sold to a stronger trade than seen over the previous weeks with the upcoming festival of EID. The overall market averaged finished at 156ppk. An active ring of 6 buyers all keen to purchase lambs. Better sorts of prime lambs sold easily over 160ppk with best sorts selling over 170ppk selling to a top of 179ppk from Clifford Lowther of Lower Castle O Trim. NWA Professional National Grid are installing a new power plant in at Moorside on the west coast which will supply power to both Cumbria and Lancashire.

One route will head north from Moorside to Harker Substation nr Carlisle following the coast up to Maryport before heading inland to Harker. The other route is intended to head down the coast from Moorside to Barrow before being tunnelled across Morecambe Bay to reach the new power station at Heysham.

North West Auctions held their weekly sale of prime stock at J36 on Tuesday and with the ethnic festival of Eid al-Adha at the end of the week, our vendors both old and new responded to the request for a big entry of sheep with a huge show of 3,641. A full ringside of buyers ensured all classes of Prime Lambs met a sharp trade with lambs seeing a rise of almost 16p/kg on the week.
