NWA Lancaster Machinery Sale Saturday 16th May North West Auctions held a very successful machinery sale at Lancaster with some good quality items on offer attracting buyers from far afield as Sheffield, Wales and Ireland. This month’s sale attracted larger equipment with a Kubota M8540 Tractor with Loader manufactured in 2009 from a local farm topped the trade sold to a top price of £15,350. A Case 4240 Tractor sold to £6,500 with a compact Kubota Tractor B600 4WD achieving £950. All types of grassland machinery attracted attention with a John Deere Mower from a local farm selling to £3,500 with a Pottinger Twin Rota rake selling to £2,300. A Lely Tedder from a local farm sold to £2180 with Niemeyer Tedder4 making £1,700. A large entry of timber created plenty of interest with sleepers selling to £110. The smaller items created a lot of interest with a Horner sheep shearing machine selling to £400 and a Power Washer to £300. An entry of Hand tools sold to £85 and £45 The opening sale of Household goods had an eclectic mix of items were forward for the household section of the sale with buyers keen to bid for most types of household goods and room to accommodate more lots furniture at future sales. NWA Lancaster Dairy Sale Monday 18th May The May dairy sale saw a lesser entry forward, comprising of 12 in-calf heifers, 6 fresh calves cows and heifers and a bull. The presale judge, Robin Boothman of Burnley awarded Lot 5, Whitecarr TC Madge, from T Cowell, Kirkham the Champion Rosette, which later went on to sell for the day’s top price of £1920. All 5 heifers sold to a respectable average of £1550. The reserve was awarded to Derick Cornthwaite with Garsby Ramos Kay 2, which achieved £1480. A run of in-calf heifers from PJ Holt & Son, Breedy Butts farm sold to a top of £1100. Finishing the sale was a pedigree bull from Henry & Mark Cornthwaite of Garstang, Kirkwood Emirates, sired by Amighetti Bigflake and from three generations of EX Cows sold to a final call of £1120. Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 15th May A bumper entry of 108 cast cows and OTM Cattle forward at Lancaster sold to a continued strong trade throughout with buyers keen to purchase all types of cows. A larger proportion of beef cows forward this week saw pure Limousin cows from Nether Hall Farms sell to 177.5ppk and others to 171.5ppk and 169.5ppk with all Limousin cows forward this week averaging just short of 150ppk. Black and whites sold to a top of 144.5ppk from W & S Airey of West Hall with other fit Black and White cows selling into the late 130ppk with all black and whites averaging 117ppk with only plain types of cows selling under 100ppk.

A larger show of Store Cattle forward today followed a similar trend in trade with younger grazing cattle eagerly sort after with smaller black and white steers a noticeable better trade, not as many good quality big steers in the market as the previous week, with native cattle once again in strong demand and well sold at Lancaster. Strong steers sold over £1200 topping at £1290 from Cowell & Moore of Woodplumpton for a Charolais. Heifers sold to a top of £1160 from M Shepherd & Sons of Pilling with a pair of British Blues.

A smaller show of Calves this morning, however a ringside of buyers made for a fast trade through out. Young Blues from Richard & Johnny Hoggarth sold to a top of £298 for Bulls and £295 for heifers. A nice Montbelliarde bull from JR Pye, Stalmine, sold to £260 at only a month old. Black and whites a sharp trade, selling to £110 from Alan & Sam Bargh, Morecambe, to average £78. A good number of Stirks finished the sale, topping at £595 for a Simmental heifer at 8months from John Gorst and Limousin heifers to £505 from Andrew Sheerin, Quernmore.

Monday 18th May A good number of Prime Hoggs forward in Lancaster for the time of year, with decent well finished hoggs in strong demand and good to sell. The overall average was 165ppk with better finished hoggs selling 180ppk plus. Another trade in keeping with other local centres at Lancaster as a lot of Hoggs still available on the market and many big meat companies yet to switch over to Spring Lambs. Better types of lambs defiantly a bit brighter this morning with a bumper entry of 590 forward. Better types of continental lambs sold easily between 210ppk and 220ppk topping at 227ppk for Texel lambs from MJ Ayrton of Cockerham. Decent bred first cross lambs out of mule’s sold around 200ppk.

The Cast Sheep trade remains strong at Lancaster with Texel ram selling to £121 from DM Cardwell of Moss Side Farm with Continental ewes selling around the £100 regular way. Big mule ewes sold £95 plus topping at £98 from GS Lander of Warrington with smaller ewes £86 plus with all mule ewes averaging £88.67. A few more hill ewes about, with Cheviot x ewes selling to £78 from WI & H Gorst of Cragg Farm and Dalesbred ewes making £75.

Spring Breeding Sheep Sale A smaller entry of Breeding Sheep forward this week following last week’s spring show. Majority of the entry was Mule Hoggs with lambs that sold to a top price of £178 for strong Mule hoggs from GB Holt of Rossendale with others from RM Wilson of Selside selling to £170 with others easily selling over £160. An entry of Mule Shearlings from Bill Pinder of Newton in Bowland sold to £192 and £190 suckling twins with mule shearlings suckling singles sold to £150. A larger entry of Prime Bulls forward this week sold to a strong trade especially with another drop in deadweight vendors left well satisfied with their trade. Dairy bred British Blue bulls sold to 184.5ppk and 174.5ppk from S & BM Lawrenson & Son of Northwoods Farm with Stabilisers from JA & R Geldard of Low Foulshaw selling to 159.5ppk.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 14th May An entry of Breeding Cattle sold to a good trade for the cattle that where forward. Simmental heifers suckling Limousin bull calves sold to a top of £1580 from Chris Alty of Warton with others achieving £1500 and £1480. Native bred Red Polled cows x with Red Polled heifer calves sold to £1,000. Store Cattle trade saw yearling suckler bred cattle sell to a strong trade with older plainer cattle slightly harder to place. Yearling steers from JA & KJ Allen of St Annes sold to £1080 with grazing steers from TE & A Galbraith selling to £1070. Yearling suckler steers better sorts selling over £1,000 and others over £900. A consignment of heifers from R & E Rayson sold to £1070 for a trio of Bazadaise. Yearling heifers sold between £850 and £900. Bulls sold to a top of £1,035 from MG & HM Capstick of Park House Farm for Stabilisers with others selling to £925.

Once again an increased ringside of buyers ensured that all classes of Cast Cows met a strong trade. Cows topped at 157.5p/kg for a Limousin cow from Messrs R H M & S Boyren of Colton. Black and white cows topped at 129.5p/kg from R Packham & Sons of Docker with Cast Cows averaging 119.34p/kg

A nice entry of 47 Calves at the weekly sale at J36 today, were met by a ringside of active buyers bidding eagerly for all breeds and ages. A top sale price of £390 for rearing calves came from WR Clarke & Partners, Yealand Redmayne with a nice month old Blue Bull. Black and white calves sold to £160 at 6weeks from DJ & S Stainton, Howgill. Best black and whites £90+ with younger rearing types £32-£68 dependant on shape and size. A run of Stirks sold to £625 for a Blue bullock from Messers Mallinson, Levens and Blue heifers from the same home to £590. Black and white stirks sold to £255 for a trio of 4 months old from Messrs Butterfield
Tuesday 19th May With seventy Pigs forward at J36, trade was well in excess of expectations with prime pigs up to £162 for a pair of nice Pietrain gilts from Messrs PK & R Woof, followed by £152 for 2 from AJ & ME Saggers other leading prices £140, £118 and £110. Sows were up to £65 for an in pig Berkshire. Weaners were sought after with a pen of 11 selling to £58 per head from K F Sweeting followed by £52 and £50. More could have been sold. A strong entry of over 550 head of Breeding Sheep with lambs or 236 families. A selective trade for Hoggs with well grown hoggs suckling their lambs well selling to equally as strong a trade if not slightly better than previously topping at £200 for a pen of ten bonny Mule hoggs from G & KM Atkinson of Colby with Texel hoggs from the same home selling to £185 who also sold Texel shearlings with singles to £175. Texel Hoggs sold to a top price of £190 twice both times from Tony Chapman of North Lodge Farm. A large amount of ewes with lambs including a large number of hill bred Cheviot and Herdwick ewes and Lambs. Strong Continental ewes and lambs sold around £170 topping at £178 from JA Noble of Penrith. Rough Fell ewes with Texel twins sold to £155. The Spring Lamb trade at J36 followed national trends with many meat companies yet to change over from hoggs to lambs or getting enough without having to venture to markets, although many companies have promised a presence in J36 next week as they look to change over onto lambs. A larger show then the previous week of 502 with many lambs forward being Suffolks out of Mules selling in the mid seventies. White faced lambs commanded more interest selling into the eighties. Many vendors coming to the end of their Prime Hoggs, meaty well finished sorts still in strong demand and eagerly bid for by buyers with meated hoggs selling in the 180ppk bracket with hill bred hoggs and heavy weights selling in the 170ppk.

The Cast Sheep trade continues to be very strong at J36 with big Continental and Suffolk ewes selling over £120 topping at £133 for a couple of Charollais ewes from TL & S Cross of Trees Farm with other Continental ewes selling over £100. The trade for Mule ewes saw bigger ewes selling in the mid to late nineties with big leaner Mules selling into late eighties with all averaging £83. Horned sheep topped at £108 for Rough tups from John Cook with Swaledale ewes selling to £80 & big Horned ewes in the seventies.
