Weekly report & newsletter NWA Lancaster Renowned January Dairy Sale - Monday 19th January January Dairy Sale sees heifers sell to £3000 The renowned Lancaster January Dairy sale saw another fantastic selection of heifers put before the judge Mr Duncan Horsley of Penrith. The pre-sale show saw a huge turnout with 16 non-halter led heifers in one class. After much deliberation through all classes, the Champion rosette was awarded to Stardale Admiral Vaakje 2, from James Burrow. Bred from 4 generations of VG/EX and sold giving 31litres, realised a final call of £3000 selling to a Messers Smith. As well as taking Champion, Stardale Admiral Vaakje 2, also won Supreme Champion, claiming the Harold Brooks Rose Bowl. James Burrow first won this award when he was 13 years old, showing testament to the quality of breeding behind the Stardale herd. The Reserve Champion rosette was award to Shoreline Pagewire Tess from Messers Woodhouse, Millom. This Pagewire sired heifer, bred from 2 gens of VG Cows, sold giving 35litres went on to achieve £1850, selling to the same buyer. Pictured is the Champion Heifer with James Burrow (Vendor). Top price cow, Saltoke Icefyre Violet 59 (VG85) from Richard & Ian Gorst, Northern Nutrition (Sponsor). Duncan Horsley, Woodcat Herd, Penrith (Judge) Bay Horse, yielding 45litres, realised £2000. A ringside of 28 buyers from throughout the Northern Counties, Scotland, Wales and the Midlands, saw many leaving empty handed. All cattle sold to full value, ahead of vendors expectations. Eleven of the 43 cattle forward sold in excess of £2000, to average £1832 for heifers and £1956 for cows. To close the sale, a bull from the Stardale herd, Stardale Vettel, a smart flashy sort, bred exceptionally well went on to sell to a final call of £1720, before heading to pastures new in Lanarkshire. NWA Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 16th January Over 500 head of cattle at Lancaster see 100% clearance Another strong entry of Store Cattle forward this morning with less quality cattle on offer. However, a better trade was seen throughout the sale topping at £1450 from R Townley & Son with a Lim Bullock at 18months. Other top prices came from SJ Brass with a pair of Lim Bullocks selling to £1370. Blue bullocks sold to a top of £1300 from Ken & Andrew Woodhouse of Ellel. Heifers sold to a top of £1280 from Jim Bracken, Catterall with a Charollais at 28months. Other heifers sold to £1270 for Blues from H & A Stephenson and £1260 for Lims again from SJ Brass. Black and Whites sold to £1080 from TJ Robinson, Milnthorpe. A nice busy ring this morning at Lancaster with a couple of new buyers present, averages came back at £945 for Bullocks, where more younger cattle and Friesians were present and £949 for heifers. Short keep cattle continue to sell at recent high levels along with well grown, farm assured cattle also reaching a premium here a Lancaster.

Another large show of OTMs this morning with 129 forward. Top price of the morning came from R Townley & Sons, Whinney Carr with a Lim heifer selling to 181.5ppk or £1268 for an Angus Bull from GB & EA Metcalfe & Son, Holme House. The sale made up of 70% dairy cows, saw heifers top at 159.5ppk from A & AM Burrow, Whin Yeats and Friesian cows to 154.5ppk from PA & D Slater, Barnacre. On the whole, plainer cows were harder to place and the edge just slightly off meaty cows leading to an overall average of 105ppk for all forward.

Not as many Rearing Calves this week, with a mediocre show on offer, selling to full value. Topping the calf trade was Martin Fishwick with a Blue Bull selling to £405. Blue heifers sold to £325 from the same home. Native bred calves sold well, with Angus heifers to £320 and Angus Bulls to £290 from TD & V Whitaker. Black and White calves varied in quality with the best selling to £110 from Messers Drinkall. Top end Black and Whites, £110-£90 with fleshy younger calves £68-£40. Stirks saw a fast trade this morning topping at £520 for Blue Bulls at 6month from A Shephard, others from TM Townley, Knowsley, sold to £500. Blue Heifers also to £500 again from A Shephard. Angus heifers a shade younger at 3months selling to £360. More stirks could have been sold to the vendors’ advantage.

Monday 19th January An entry of 632 Prime Hoggs forward at Lancaster sold to an overall market average of 190ppk. Better sorts of lambs still easily selling over the 200ppk selling to a top of 213ppk from Andrew Butler of Parks Farm Barn for a pen of 8. Prime hoggs sold to a top of £96 from P Lawrenson of Walmsley Fold for 47kg continental lambs. Majority of lambs sold from £38 to £42 per head above their weight.

The strong trade for Cast Sheep continues with all classes of cast ewes and rams eagerly sort after. Texel ewes sold to a top price of £125 from T & EA Garth of Bailey Hey Farm with other well fleshed continental ewes easily selling over £100. Mule ewes today sold to £91 from EE Thornton & Sons of Downlands averaging £88. Horn ewes in strong demand selling to £78 for Dalesbreds with other pens of horn ewes selling between £68 and £71.

Tuesday 20th January North West Auctions held their weekly sale of Primestock at J36 on Tuesday with a show of 1,825 Prime Hoggs and 420 Cast Sheep, which were put before a full ringside of buyers. Not quite as many quality Prime Hoggs forward today, however, buyers were keen to secure well-fed finished sheep. A top price of £101 was secured for a single Texel hogg from Richard Blackburn of Great Strickland, and a top price per kg of 221.2p for hoggs from J & J A Coates & Son of Westhouse. All classes of hoggs were good to sell but buyers are showing a little more caution to under-finished hoggs.

Cast Sheep topped today at £134 per head for a pair of Charollais from John Stott of Crosscrake. There were a lot more horned sheep on the market today, but these also met strong demand. We are sad to announce the death of Mr Cookson on 13th January. Chris joined the Kendal & District Auction art Ltd in the 1950’s and rose to become the Managing Director and Senior Auctioneer until his retirement in 1997.
