Weekly report & newsletter Dressed Poultry On Monday 22nd December NWA held its annual sale of dressed poultry. Over a 1000 birds were sold between the two auction mart sites. Lancaster Auction show was won by R Hodgson with a Turkey selling for £70 with a Goose from JM & TJ Livesey at £50. The show at J36 was also won by R Hodgson, this time selling for £72 with S Garnett selling the Champion Goose for £70. There was also a competition for the most festively dressed customers which was won by Martyn & Arlene Fishwick from Fishwick Farms which was judge by Grace and William Gardiner.

NWA Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 19th December The final sale of 2014 saw a nice entry with 292 cattle forward in all three rings. Store Cattle sold to a strong trade for cattle carrying flesh, topping at £1420 for a pair of nice Limousin bullocks from J Capstick & Son, Whicham Hall. Other top prices came from J Bargh, Morecambe with a single Limousin Bullock selling to £1340 and David Moorhouse with Charollais at £1310 and £1300. Angus bullocks sold to £1280 from L Parsons, Levens. Friesian bullocks sold to £1160 from the same home. Heifers sold to a top of £1200 from both JT & A Armitstead, Selside with a pair of 21month Blues and J Capstick & Son with Limousins. A good entry of Cast Cows before the Christmas break. Meaty cows saw the best trade, topping at 164.5ppk for a Montbelliarde heifer from A & FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel. Top price per head came from EJ Hodgson & Son with a Friesian cow selling to £967. Dairy cows were in plentiful supply but trade a fraction easier, topping at 119.5ppk from EJ Hodgson and E & N Wright & Sons, Roeburndale, best sorts topping £1/kilo. A strong trade for all types of Calves this morning, topping the day’s trade was Dave Harrison of Wray with an 8week Blue Bull selling to £440 with another from the same home at £435. Younger blue bulls at 5weeks from WN & D Smith & Sons, Cockerham sold to £400. Blue heifers sold to £350 from David & Eileen Wallbank of Abbeystead. Angus bulls from the same home sold to £380. Herefords from Steve Mason, Birkland Barrow were met by a fast trade selling to £340 and £330 at three weeks. Friesian calves sold very well today at Lancaster, topping at £145 for an 8 week old again from WN & D Smith. Best sorts of friesians sold in advance of £100, plainer sorts £65-£80 with small calves around the £30 mark. Just a handful of stirks sold to £560 for a 7month Hereford from Steve Mason and £500 for a pair of Angus Heifers from A Shepherd. Monday 22nd December A sharper trade for all classes of Prime Lambs than expected. SQQ lambs sold to a market average of 191ppk with an overall market average of 189ppk. Better sorts of lambs sold to 214ppk or £94 a head from G Wells of Woodplumpton with other better sorts in and around the 210ppk with plenty of pens of continental lambs in and around the 200ppk with best lambs £7-£8 above 200ppk. Mule lambs sold to a top of 190ppk from Steven Park of Highfield Farm and WT & EM Townley & Son of Burnt House averaging 180ppk. Plenty of good horned lambs forwards sold to a top of 197ppk from Scotch Blackface’s from Will Pye of Tarnwater averaging 189ppk. Light weight lambs between 33kg and 35kg sold in the 190ppk.

The strong trade for Cast Sheep continues with many buyers saying they were dearest they have seen. Cast continental tups easily flew past the £100 mark selling to a top price of £128 from Richard Morphet of Far Highfield. Mule ewes sold to a top of £85 from J & H Bland & Son Ltd of Ninezergh. Strong well fleshed Swaledale ewes sold to a top price of £79 with others to £74. Herdwick shearlings from T & ME Longton & Son of Lee End Farm sold to £70.

Prime Bulls sold to a continued good trade at Lancaster topping at 197.5ppk twice from E & N Wright & Sons of Allcocks Farm for British Blues out of dairy cows. An overall market average of 193ppk was achieved.

NWA J36 Sale Reports Thursday 18th December The weekly sale of Calves had an entry of 25 forward selling to a strong trade with all classes keenly sort after. British Blue bull calves sold to a top of £395 from ML & SM Dobson of Espford Farm with other beef bull calves between £200 and £230 at only between 2 and 3 weeks of age. Heifer calves from JG & BJ Escolme of Low Stangerthwaite Farm saw Limousin heifers sell to £295. Black and white bull calves saw a young show of calves on offering selling to £70 with other rearing young rearing sorts £50 plus.

Calf Top Prices: Bull Calves – Fr: £70 Espford, £65 Hagg Farm, £48 Raw End. Ayr: £32 Sunny Bank. AA: £230 Warton Grange Farm. Lim: £220 Town House. BrB: £395 Espford. Heifer Calves – Lim: £295 Low Stanger Thwaite. AA: £225 Low Stanger Thwaite. BrB: £210 Warton Grange Farm. Heifer Stirk – Lim: £495 Middle Lee.

The sale of Cast Cows saw better meated sorts sell to 126p/kg from I & AJ Armer with others generally 105p/kg - 118p/kg. Top price of £876 was achieved for a Sim x again from I & AJ Armer. All cows sold average 108p/kg. Store Cattle were generally younger sorts achieving £700 for British Blue x heifer (7mths old) with bulls £685 for Mont bulls. Store Lambs in strong demand with all classes selling to strong trade with a mixed entry forward. Best sorts of short keep lambs sold to £84.50 for Texel lambs from R & AC Harper of Hardrigg Farm with plenty of other pens in the £70’s. Long keep lambs sold to the strongest trade of the day especially for continential and Suffolk lambs. Plenty of horned lambs in saw long term Rough fell lambs top at £55.50 from Clarke Bros of Sedbergh. An overall market average of £57.82. John Hughes sold a Texel lamb for Charity on behalf of R.A.B.I. which sold for £92 to John Bowling of Jameson Farms, Wigan.

Tuesday 16th December North West Auctions held their weekly sale of Prime Stock at J36 and as the Christmas Holiday Season approaches a smaller show of 1850 prime sheep were forward for sale and for those vendors who braved the atrocious weather conditions they were all well rewarded with an early Christmas present with both lamb and cast sheep meeting a fantastic trade. Prime Lambs averaged 194.58p/kg for 1490 sold, top price of 212.8p/kg went to a pen of Texel X Lambs from P & TL Edmondson of Kirkby-inFurness and a top price per head of £98 for a Suffolk Lamb from Messrs R & A Eastberby of Westhouse. Export Lambs were regulary 200-210p/kg, there were fewer smarter sorts around today but these sold at 210-212p/kg. Horned Lambs met strong demand with Fishwick Bros of Longsleddle once again topping the horned lamb trade with 32kg Swaledales at £64 a head and 35kg lambs at £70 a head. Mule lambs to £89 with the majority £78-£81. Prime Lamb Top Prices: Suff £98 Fellside Farm, £95 The Courtyard, £87.50 High House Farm, £85 Fellside Farm, £84 The Galleon. Mule £89 Low Hall, £81.50, Arklid Farm, £81 Nether House Farm, £80 Manor Farm, Moors Farm. Swale £74 The Borrans, £64 Middle Sadghyll, £58 Manor Farm. Char £87 Gilpin Farm. Tex £95, £94, £93.50 Arklid.

A show of 306 Cast Sheep were strongly contested for with a large percentage of the show being horned ewes. Continental ewes to £124 per head, Mule ewes to £100 with the majority £85-£95 with plainer sorts in the mid 70’s. Top price of the day was £138 for a Bluefaced Leicester Ram from S Park of Holton. Horned ewes to £96 from E & K Bland of Cotegill for Rough Fells and £83 for Swaledale ewes from Drinkall Bros of Catshaw Hall.
