NWA Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 20th February - Anniversary Show & Sale The 50th Anniversary sale at Lancaster saw a catalogued entry of 345 Store Cattle. Trade for all cattle remained strong, with a ring side of buyers for all classes. Well grown cattle carrying flesh were most sort after today with a pair of 22month Limousin Bullocks from DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland realising £1430. Blue bullocks sold to £1360 from A & E Clarkson, Cock Hall. Heifers sold to a top of £1300 from JE & AC Clarke with a single Blue at 23months. Native breeds sold to a top of £1260 for a pair of Angus Bullocks from MG & J Parker, Lodge Farm and the same price for a pen of Hereford bullocks from I & ME Askew, Raw Head. Angus Heifers sold to £1210 from D & N Davis, Nateby and JE Bracken, St Michaels. EJ Ward and Sons topped the Black and white trade at £1100, best sorts of black and whites selling over the £1000 barrier. Younger cattle also in demand at Lancaster with nice 11month Limousins selling to £860 for both bullocks and heifers from Paul & Raymond Ayrton. Averages today reflect the strong trade with all bullocks averaging £1042 and all heifers forward averaging £1063.

Cast Cows saw another rise in trade with an overall average of 127ppk, some 6ppk up on the week. A good entry of 76 cows, however numbers still short of buyers requirements, more needed next week to meet demand. Topping trade overall was A & E Clarkson with a cast Limousin steer selling to 209.5ppk or £1331. Cast heifers sold to 191.5ppk from EW & RM Towers, Holme Head with a Fleckvieh. Continental cows sold to a top of 169.5ppk for a British Blue from W Pinder Jnr, Newton in Bowland, others from RH & C Ayrton, Ouzlethorn sold to 159.5ppk for a 770kg Limousin. Friesian cows sold to a top of 169.5ppk, twice, from MH & AR Robinson, Old Hutton.

A slightly disappointing show of Calves this morning for the Anniversary Show. Trade however did not disappoint with all classes substantially dearer on the week. Friesian calves saw the dearest trade with a 6 week old calf, first prize B&W, from David and Eileen Wallbank realising £270, others from the same home realised £200, £180 & £175. Away from the show, Tom Whitaker, Park Lane Farm selling 9 week olds to £165 & £162. On the whole 6-9week black and whites £150-£200, with younger sorts £42-£70, average £115 for all forward. Older Black & Whites at 3months sold to £288 from Ken Kelsall, Chipping. Continental calves sold well again today with 7 week Blue Bulls to £405 from J Bargh & Son. The pre-sale show saw R & A Batterbee, Newhouse Farm, take the champion rosette with a nice Limousin Heifer which went on to sell for £410. Angus’ from the same home sold to £420, with younger sorts at £270 & £260 for heifers. Three week old Herefords from Steve Mason sold to £365 for Bulls and £325 for hiefers. Sold to Blue bull stirks sold to £480 at 4-5months from J, CH & JG Bland, Arnside Tower. More stirks needed to fill buyer’s orders.

Trade for Prime Hoggs remained strong at Lancaster this morning, peaking at 209ppk for a trio of 40kg Texels Standard 32 ½ -39 188.0 179.9 from AG Butler, Parks Farm Barn, with an SQQ average of 189.2ppk. Top price per head came from J Bargh & Medium 39 ½ -45 ½ 209.0 190.4 Son, Heaton with a heavy weight Texel to £97. Plenty of meaty hoggs forward this morning with best Charollais Heavy 46 - 51 ½ 196.0 178.9 sorts from PG Lawrenson, Chorley selling to 208ppk or £93.50. Texels sold to £97 for a single hogg from JM Sanderson, Halton, Texels in general £40-£45 above their weight. Mule hoggs this morning generally £33£35 above their weight, with all forward averaging £77.42. Hill bred hoggs saw 41kg Scotch Black Faces sell to £79 from WM Pye, Tarnwater. The Opening Spring Breeding Sheep Sale The opening spring breeding sheep sale at Lancaster saw 295 head of breeding sheep forward, including the flock dispersal of Cheviot in lamb ewes from the Jones Family of Sandvilla. Cheviot shearlings in lamb to the Cheviot sold to £125 with older ewes from the same home selling to £118. A large crowd of buyers around the ring for the first sheep with lambs at foot at Lancaster, many buyers went away with less sheep than required and some even leaving empty handed. An entry of 75 families mainly of older ewes with young lambs at foot saw full mouthed Texel ewes with smart ¾ Texel twin lambs at foot sell to £229 a family from Peter and Susan Robinson of Claughton. Texel ewes with single lambs sold to a top price of £185. Older mule ewes sold to a top price of £196 from Peter Anderton of Wyre Farm with plenty of other pens of mules with twins selling around £190 per family. An overall average of £183 a family which includes families of singles and twins.

NWA J36 Sale Reports Thursday 19th February - Anniversary Show & Sale The sale commenced with Beef Breeding Cattle which included a herd dispersal from the late Mr W E Parker of Thwaite Farm, Howgill. Cows and calves were to £1980 and In-Calf cows to £1300. A full pedigree Limousin bull from the same home sold to £2,450. A packed ringside of customers gathered, which included several new faces to J36 for the sale of Store Cattle. The sale was made up of, predominantly, young, 10-12 mo summering cattle, which, once again, met a tremendous trade. There was also a great show of stronger bullocks and heifers forward, which saw Limousin bullocks sell to £1,400 from J & M E Bateman of Lowgill. Heifers were to £1180 for a Limousin from Mr J A Chapman. The anniversary show of Store Cattle was judged by Mr Andrew Smith of Westhouse and we thank him for his time and expertise. After judging the two classes, he awarded the championship rosette to a cracking, 9 mo British Blue bullock, shown by S G Benson of Horrace Farm, Ulverston. This went on to be bought by the judge for £1,100. The reserve Champion ticket went to a very stylish 10 mo British Blue heifer from R H & C Ayrton of Abbeystead, which sold to Mr John Bowling of Wigan.

A full ringside of buyers competed very strongly for a good show of Cast Cows. Black and white cows topped at 129.5p/kg, with the majority of black and whites carrying flesh 120-125p/kg. All black and whites averaged 110.46p/kg/. A great show of Cont cows saw these top at 224.5p/kg for a pure Blue cow from R T & J Gorst of Killington, with another at 214.5p/kg from the same home. A good run of Lim x cows from Chris Case of Dendron topped at 199.5p/kg and his 5 cows averaged 171.54p/kg, leaving a fantastic overall market average of 124.26p/kg. Only the one prime bull forward today, selling to 229.5p/kg. More cattle are required each sale for a full ringside of buyers.

The Anniversary Show of Dairy Cattle was judged by Mr David Moorhouse of Natland, who awarded the Championship Tankard to Raven Manifold Mabel, a 2nd calved cow from G M & A M Wilson. The reserve rosette went to Luptonhall Steady Sallyann 4 from J M Barton & Son. Heifers sold to £1600 for both pedigree and commercials, with others £1520. All sold averaging £1445. Next sale – Thursday 26th February and then fortnightly thereafter. The pre-sale show of Calves 60 days and under was kindly judged by Callum Taylor of County Durham. The beef class was very close with the first prized rosette being awarded to JW & D Robinson & Sons of Hollins Farm. In the Holstein Friesian class in was a clean sweep of 1st, 2nd and 3rd for J & O Galbraith & Son of Endmoor Farm. The overall champion awarded to the British Blue Bull from JW & D Robinson & Sons of Hollins Farm. A shortage of numbers forward today with many more needed to fill the demand of buyers old and new, with fresh faces around the ring today from as far afield as Worcestershire. The trade for beef calves continues to be consistently good and plenty more could have easily been sold to vendor’s advantage. The Champion calf sold to £485 from JW & D Robinson & Sons of Hollins Farm at 60 days old to the judge of Callum Taylor. A few older calves in the market today between 60 and 90 days of age selling to a top of £510 for a British Blue Bull from JW & TE Sharp of Flodder Hall, who also had calves to £490. Also selling into the late £400’s was HJ Robinson & Son of Elm Tree realising £485 with British Blue bull calves. All Blue bulls sold to an average of £448. Heifers topped at £395 for a British Blue from JW & TE Sharp of Flodder Hall. Rearing Black and White bull calves, once again, selling well at J36 to a top of £130 from JG & BJ Escolme of Low Stanger Thwaite. Other rearing types sold between £70 and £110, and all Black and Whites averaged £72. A handful of Stirks in the market were once again wanted by buyers. Five month old british blue heifers sold to £580 from Mike and Neil Strickland of The Borrans.

Tuesday 24th February A much lighter show of Prime hoggs and Cast Sheep were forward than normal and put before a full ringside of buyers with well-fed hoggs, once again, selling at a fast pace. Prime Hoggs topped at £96 for a pair of Texel x from B & R Barnes and a top price of 222.6p/kg for Texel x from MW & MR Black. Well-fed hoggs regularly 195-205p/k. Horned lambs were to 194.7p/kg with plenty 185-190p/kg with, once again, large proportion of the show of hoggs being hill bred. A very strong overall average of 192.91p/kg was achieved.
