Weekly report & newsletter NWA J36 In-Lamb Sheep Sale The annual sale of individual in-lamb sheep which included a prize show of Suffolks saw a catalogue entry of over 100 attract buyers from as far afield as South Wales and Northern Cumbria. Judging was conducted by Mr ST Birkett of Carnforth who awarded the Championship rosette to a shearling scanned carrying a single from D Williams, Criccin which later sold for the sale’s top price of 580gns. A further 4 sheep sold for over 500gns which included a shearling at 540gns from RA Batty, Redhills and a gimmer lamb at 500gns from GM Owen, Newborough. A consignment of Texels from Proctors Farm Ltd peaked at 460gns with Texels from P Woof, Stainton selling to £420gns. Charollais shearlings In-lamb to the Charollais from J Stott achieved a top price of 400gns with Charollais due to the Beltex from JD & V Towers selling at 320gns. An entry of aged Mule ewes due February sold at £132 & £130 from BD Willison & Son, Levens.

NWA Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 21st November A larger entry of 90 OTM forward this week at Lancaster saw all classes of cattle selling to a sharper trade. OTM heifers continue to sell to a premium at Lancaster topping at 171.5ppk for a Limousin from Richard Oldfield of Brow Foot Farm with all heifers forward averaging 128ppk. Cast cows sold to top price of 144.5ppk from RS & BA Harker of Overthwaithe Farm with well fleshed beef cows easily achieving 130ppk and more. A similar story throughout with Black and Whites with better cows selling over 110ppk and all cows a sharper trade. More beef cows about today lead to a stronger market average of 105ppk. A smaller entry of Store Cattle forward this week at Lancaster but still an impressive 300 store passing through the ring. Good quality and well fleshed cattle are still eagerly sought after and buyers continuing to look for and pay a premium for Farm Assured cattle. A larger entry of Black and Whites this week were harder to place with many buyers sheds filling up, although anything fleshed and short keep was sought after. A cracking pair of Limousin x steers from David Moorhouse of High House Farm sold to a top price of £1460 with a British Blue from the same home selling to £1380. Native bred cattle always sell to a strong trade at Lancaster with an Angus Steers from H & JA Gorst selling to £1290. Less Calves around this morning with very few continentals among them. Blue heifers sold to £340 from TD & V Whitaker, Park Lane. A run of calves from Wallbank Farms saw Angus bulls to £315 and Angus heifers at £240. Black and white calves were forward in abundance topping at £95 twice from both Wallbank Farms and TD & V Whitaker. In general strong calves £78-£95 with younger calves £45-£62. Small plain calves better on the week selling around the £30 mark. Average of £43.30 for all black and whites forward. Buyers looking favourably on calves over 4 week age. A number of Stirks forward saw 3-4month olds sell to £420 for Blue Bulls and Blue heifers to £370. Lim heifers to £345 and Angus heifers to £342. A mixed show in quality of Prime Lambs forward this morning at Lancaster with many vendors bringing forward the last of their lambs. Quality and well fleshed lambs still in strong demand and continue to sell in line with the trade in recent weeks with heavy weight lambs also eagerly sort after. The overall market average was 174ppk with the SSQ averaging 175ppk. Lambs sold to a top of 200ppk from JR & M Ayrton & Son of Bambers Farm with other pens of decent Texel’s selling into the late 180’s early 190’s. Less hill bred lambs forward this morning saw mules selling to 179ppk (£75) with pens of horn lambs regularly selling around 170ppk. Prime lamb vendors are reminded that sheep must be tagged to regulation and many meat companies are requesting that lambs are belly clipped. Belly clipping service is available.

The strong Cast Sheep trade continues with pure Suffolk ewes selling to £100 from George Riley of Bolton le Sands with mule ewes selling into the seventies and a small number of horn ewes forward selling to £44. An overall average for cast sheep was £65.

A few less Prime Bulls forward in the market today sold to a similar trade in Lancaster we beef bred Limousin bulls from S & BM Lawrenson & Son of Northwoods Farm selling to 204.5ppk with others from the same home making 189.5ppk. Montbeliarde bulls sold to 164.5ppk.

NWA J36 Sale Reports Thursday 20th November NWA J36 held its successful weekly sale of Calves with an entry of 46 forward this week. A younger smaller show of calves this week saw calves sell to a sensible trade throughout with vendors and purchasers going away pleased. Stronger beef calves always in strong demand at J36 and today proving no different. Heifers with cow making potential continue to make a premium with Limousin heifers from Langley Park Farms selling to a top price of £320. Plenty good quality heifers needed to meet a strong demand at J36. MH & AR Robinson of Homescales Farm sold the topped priced Bull with a Limousin selling to £310 for a five week old bull. Black and White bull calves continue to sell in line with other centres with plenty of men around the ring today eager to purchase calves. The weekly sale of store lambs saw another full ringside of buyers in attendance competing for all types with all lambs sold averaging £54.27. The sale topped at £75 for Texel Cross from IE & MA Taylor with others at £74 from LA & M Lambert. Short keep lambs regularly achieved £68+ with longer keep £57-£66 with very few under £40. An abundance of hill lambs forward saw cheviots sell to £61 from GC & GW Taylor, Rough Fells £57.50 from B Dickinson & Co, Swaledale £47 and Herdwicks £45. Mules peaked at £65 from JA & SM Allen and TLB & J Knowles with others regularly £62-£64.

North West Auctions held their weekly sale of prime sheep at J36 on Tuesday where a large entry of 3,601 Prime Lambs and cast sheep were sold to a full compliment of buyers. Lambs would be just a shade easier by a couple of pence across the board, which falls in line with this week’s national trend. However, buyers were keen to secure all weights with vendors being well rewarded for well finished lambs. Lambs topped at 205.9p/kg for Texel cross lambs from Richard Prickett of Hutton Roof and a top price per head of £88 was achieved by Messrs J Allonby & Son of Grayrigg for a pen of Texels. Again, a good show of Hill lambs with Mules to £79 and Rough Fells to £73. Overall a very pleasing market average of 176.97p/kg was achieved.

A large show of 722 Cast Sheep were forward with a large percentage of the entry being made up of Horned ewes which all looked very well sold to a full ringside of buyers. Ewes topped at £116 per head for a pen of Texel ewes from R & E Ladds of Kendal.
