Weekly report & newsletter NWA J36 In-Lamb Sheep Sale - Saturday 24th January Rough Fell The Annual Show and Sale of In-Lamb Rough Fell Sheep and Gimmer Hoggs saw a large crowd of travelled buyers in attendance from as far afield as the Midlands, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The pre-sale show allowed the best of the breed to be put on display with Mr William Dawson of Sedbergh undertaking the task of judging. The Champion rosette was awarded to T, L, B & J Knowles of Selside showing a 1 crop ewe scanned in-lamb with twins to High Woodend White Knight which later sold for £600 to the judge. The sale topped at £620 for the second prize ewe, a 2 crop scanned with twins, in-lamb to Cotegill Wise from S & R Capstick, Howgill selling to G & K Robinson, Crooklands. Gimmer hoggs sold to £400 for the Reserve champion, sired by a 2,200 gn ram bred by T D Todd & Son, shown by K & G Allinson, purchased by J A Law, Newbiggin on Lune. A dispersal sale on behalf of the late W E Parker saw ewes scanned with singles sell to £105, with G Armstrong, Nibthwaite selling aged ewes to £102, £100. The RFSBA held it’s annual social and fundraising evening on Friday 23rd January, where a total of £1,639.50 was raised for Rosemere Cancer Foundation. Thank you to all who attended and donated for the evening.

Blue Faced Leicesters The opening sale of Bluefaced Leicester females at North West Auctions J36 had an entry of 14 sheep forward from renowned well known flocks to local breeders with something to suit everyone and attracted attention from far and wide. The trade was brisk throughout with many buyers and potential buyers looking to buy strong stylish sheep and looking to invest in renowned bloodlines. The leading price of the day was an in lamb gimmer hogg from the renowned Hundith flock of Jack & Adam Lawson of Kirkland Green. This hogg sired by the Smearcett C003 and going back to the old Kentmere V003 scanned in lamb with twins to Cherry Tree ram bought out of Hawes last autumn sold for £1,600. It was another gimmer hogg that broke past the thousand pound barrier this time from Messrs Lord of the Hewgill flock, a stylish gimmer hogg sired by E047 Hewgill (Green Tag) that has done very well for the flock and going back to the old R1 Lunesdale ewe bought from James Barker’s Keer flock many years ago and this went onto sell for £1,350. In lamb ewes in strong demand and many more could have easily been sold. It was a four shear ewe from Trevor and John France of Higher Core that took the top price selling to £520 carrying twins to Midlock D043, a ram being used very successfully in the flock with other ewes from the same home selling to £400.

Multi Breed Individual Sale An entry of Texel, Charollais and Beltex in-lamb shearlings and ewes forward sold once again to a strong trade at J36. A consignment of in lamb pedigree Texel’s from Proctors Farm created a large amount of interest and sold to a top price of £650 sired by Scholars Twenty Twelve and carrying twins to Anglezarke Uno with others selling to £580 and £550. Beltex aged ewes from the Jennings Family of Crake Hall sold to a top price of £400 scanned in lamb with a single with others from the same home to £350. Charollais ewes in-lamb to the Beltex sold to £280 twice from JD & V Towers & Son of Camp House with a Beltex x Charolais shearling selling to £300.

Commercial Breeding Sheep An entry of commercial in-lamb ewes attracted plenty of interest and sold to a strong trade. Mule ewes carrying twins sold to a top price of £172 with others selling £170 from the late WE Parker of Thwaite Farm.

NWA Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 23rd January Less Calves around this morning although trade held up for all classes. Topping the calf section was G & ME Woodhouse, Ellel with a Blue Bull selling to £560, heifers from the same home sold to £430. Herefords sold to £350 for Bulls from Steve Mason, Birkland Barrow. Younger beef calves, slightly easier, £170-£220. Friesian calves in demand, selling to a top of £125 at 7 weeks, from George Sanderson. Best calves £125-£100 with nice younger fleshy calves £95-£85, plainer sorts £60-£40. Overall average of £73 for all black and whites. Stirks saw a flying trade topping at £675 for a trio of 10month Blue heifers from A & E Clarkson. A pair of Angus heifers from the same home sold to £620. Black and White bulls from John Atkinson, Warton sold to £265 twice and £250. Blue bullocks from the same home sold to £495. Notice for all calf vendors and purchasers, the monthly Dugdale Calf Competition will run again this year, with both the vendor and purchaser of the highest price calf under 6weeks receiving 3 bags of feed each, courtesy of Dugdale Nutrition.

Cast Cows and OTM Cattle sold to a slightly sharper trade this week at NWA Lancaster with an entry of 92 forward. OTM steers were in strong demand selling to a top price of 214.5ppk from TR Prickett of Hutton Roof Hall. Cast heifers sold to a strong trade topping at 164.5ppk for an Angus from J & DA Dickinson of Springfield. The trade for beef cows saw the best types twice sell to 147.5ppk from TR Prickett of Hutton Roof Hall with Limousin cows with other well fleshed beef cows selling between 127ppk and 145ppk. Black and Whites sold to a top of 127.5ppk from W Conder & Son of Higher Broadwood Farm with other fleshed cows selling in the early 120’sppk with others selling in the mid to late teens. An overall average of 112.5ppk was achieved for all OTM cattle forward.

Lancaster weekly sale of Store Cattle had a large proportion of Friesian steers forward selling to a strong trade exceeding many vendors’ expectations with quality cattle a good trade throughout for all ages and size of cattle. A top price of £1540 was achieved today for a big Angus steer from A & E Clarkson Ltd of Cock Hall Farm with other pens of big steers selling over £1300. Heifers sold to a top price of £1280 from HR & KA Hodgson of Howriggs for 19 month old Limousin. A large entry of Friesian steers sold to an overall market average of £784 for an entry of a lot of 14 to 18 month old cattle. All beef bred steers forward averaged a very impressive £1121 and heifer sold to a strong average of £1004.

Prime Hoggs sold to a similar trade and market average as the previous week. Slightly less prime hoggs 667 Prime Hoggs to £94 & 205.0p/kg Top Av. forward this week with 638 in the market sold to an overall market average of 187ppk with SQQ lambs averaging Weights Standard 32 ½ -39 214.0 191.9 191ppk. A very varied show of hoggs forward this week with many people coming to the end of their crop of last Medium 39 ½ -45 ½ 207.0 191 year’s hoggs. Good hoggs well finished sold to a strong demand with buyers caution of export market with the Heavy 46 - 51 ½ 193.0 177.35 strengthening pound. First cross continental lambs sold between 195ppk and 205ppk with better bred lambs selling up to 214ppk from TR Prickett of Hutton Roof Hall with a pen of Beltex x lambs. Hill lambs in the market today saw cheviots sell to a top of 195ppk average 184ppk and topping at 193ppk averaging 183ppk. Prime hoggs topped at £108.50 from George Sanderson of Blackleach House Farm with 60kg Suffolk hoggs.

The Cast Sheep trade is not quite to the dizzy heights seen a few week back but continues to remain solid. Texel rams sold to a top price of £126 from Ken Kelsal of Brown Brook with continental ewes from George Sanderson of Blackleach Farm selling to £120 with good continental ewes still easily reaching and passing the £100 mark. Mule ewes sold to a top of £94 from James Lamb averaging £87. Horned ewes sold to a top of £80 from Fred Woodhouse of Fell End Farm with no sheep selling under £50.

A few more Prime Bulls forward at Lancaster, the trade for better sorts of bulls was good with plainer sorts a slightly easier trade than seen over previous weeks. Prime bulls sold to a top price of 203.5ppk from S & BM Lawrenson & Son of Northwoods Farm with a Limousin. Decent sorts of bulls sold to 180ppk plus with beef bulls out of dairy passing 160ppk easily.

NWA J36 Sale Reports Thursday 22nd January - New Year Show & Sale of Store Cattle The New Year Show & Sale of Store Cattle saw a full ringside of buyers in attendance from the Northern Counties and Midlands. The pre-sale show was judged by Mr Paul Bradley of Millom who had several superb cattle put before him in the show classes. The championship rosette was awarded to a 21 month old British Blue x Bullock from JA & J Harper of Killington which later sold for £1340 to F & B Smith of Carnforth. The reserve champion was a 19 month old Limousin x heifer from BJ Thompson of Selside which later sold for £1250 to DA Wilcock of Wigan. All cattle sold to the recent high prices with buyers competing for all types. A trio of Charolais x steers from M Robinson of Lowgill lead the sale at £1340 with other bullocks regularly £1100 - £1280. Heifers topped at £1250 for the reserve champion with others generally £950 - £1050.

Dairy Cattle sold to £1700 for a heifer from RW Bainbridge & Son, Whittington with others £1600 from BW & M Haygarth, Dent. Many buyers present, again leaving empty handed.

A good show of Cast Cows and Clean Cattle were put before an increased ringside of buyers. Dairy bred cattle would be a little harder to sell, with more on the market. Meated Black and White cows were 110p-114p/kg with leaner sorts 80p-90p/kg. A good show of Continental cows were strongly contested for, topping at 149.5p/kg for a Limousin cow from J & M B Birkett of Little Langdale. Plenty of cows were 135p-145p/kg, with an overall average of 114.65p/kg. Cast heifers averaged 129.93p/kg. A few well finished Prime Cattle were forward, topping at 214.5p/kg for a Stabiliser heifer from A Dixon & Son of Selside.

The weekly sale of Calves and Stirks saw an entry of 61 forward. Good quality beef calves continue to sell to a strong trade at J36, with better beef calves being short of requirements. Smaller plain beef calves slightly harder sold this week with black and white bull calves seeing rearing calves selling to a sharp trade. The trade for calves today was topped at £450 for six week old Limousin heifer calves from Brian Wilson of Spout House with JW & D Robinson & Sons of Hollins Farm selling British Blue bulls, twice selling to £440. Black and White bull calves sold to a top price of £205 from WB Winder & Co of Wall End Farm, with others to £195 from C Gibson & Son of Burneside Hall. All black and white bull calves averaged £72. A few more Stirks in the auction today, Limousin heifer Stirks from Craig and Hannah Mason of Mearsbeck sold to £580 with five month old Black and White bulls from E & SM Haplin of Rakesmoor Farm selling to £230. All forward averaged £225.

A continued strong trade for Store Hoggs, saw best short keep Texel hoggs selling to £80 from TA Teasdale of Head House. Plenty of other short keep hoggs sold in, and around the mid seventies. Long keep hoggs sold to a very strong trade with horned lambs from W Pinder Jnr of Longstripes selling to £60. An overall market average of £64.43 was achieved.

Poultry & Waterfowl Saturday 24th January The opening sale of 2015 saw a nice entry of poultry forward with something for everyone. Starting the sale were hatching eggs which saw the dearest trade of the day, topping at £30 for a dozen French Copper Blue Marans from B Goulding. In the waterfowl section, topping the section and the overall sale high, was a trio of Fawn & White Runners selling to £112 from RN & M Hoggarth. A pair of Ebdon Geese sold to £62 from AR Toward. Bantams sold to £75 for a trio of Salmon Wyandotte Pullets again from RN & M Hoggarth. Large Fowl sold to a top of £54 for two Speckled Sussex Hens.

The next Poultry & Waterfowl sale is Saturday March 21st at Junction 36 Rural Auction Centre.

Tuesday 27th January North West Auctions held their weekly sale of Prime Sheep at J36 on Tuesday, where a show of 2325 prime sheep were presented to the usual compliment of buyers. Prime Hoggs topped at £96 per head from Fishwick Farms of Silverdale and a top price per kilo of 217.5 for a pen of Smart Texel X Hoggs from George Harryman of Hawkshead, closely followed at 215.4p/kg for TExels from Ian Millard of Bootle. Well fed Hoggs were once again well bid for but with more Hoggs numbers on the market and the current exchange rate working against the export firms which left an overall market average of 182.38p/kg which was down 5p/kg on the week.
