NWA J36 Show & Sale of Swaledale Females Friday 25th September The annual show and sale of Swaledale breeding sheep had a larger entry of just shy of 3,000. The trade saw Swaledale gimmer shearlings best types sell to equally strong trade as last year with lesser types harder to sell than previous year. Swaledale ewes where eagerly bid for with plenty of old and new buyers around the ring. Top pens maybe slightly easier but middle and lower pens equally as strong trader if not slightly stronger than previous year with many consignors averaging similar if not more than previous year. One of the strongest entries for the show of Swaledale drafts with ten pens forward in front of judges Harry and Geoffrey Gass of Bewcastle. The first prized pen was awarded to E & A Wear of Grove Farm with a pen of two crop ewes. The shearling pen was won by JA Alderson of Barras Farm. E & A Wear of Grove Farm went onto win the overall champion with their pen of two crops. The trade topped at £185 for the champion pen E & A Wear of Grove Farm selling to B & H Wilson of Ashtead with gimmer shearlings twice selling to £155 firstly from JA Alderson of Barras Farm with the first prized pen and MP Capstick of High Lane with the second prized pen. There were plenty of pens selling in excess of £120. Swaledale shearlings sold to an average of £101 with Swaledale ewes selling to an average of £97.39. Swaledale gimmer lambs sold to a top of £71 from J Hunter of Tebay and an overall average of £52. Ian Atkinson Auctioneer, commented on the sale “A very pleasing sale with vendors leaving happy with their trade especially with the current prime lamb trade and being one of the earlier draft ewe sales.” Prices Show Results Av. £51 £101 £97

Show & Sale of Rough Fell Females Friday 25th September ROUGH FELL EWES SELL TO £170 The Annual Show & Sale of Rough Fell Ewes, Shearlings & Gimmer Lambs saw a rise in prices achieved with vendors leaving very suited with the day’s trade. The pre-sale judging was conducted by Mr William Dawson of Sedbergh who awarded the championship rosette to NC & S Dodd, Flakebridge showing a pen of 3 crop ewes which were also awarded the North Sheep Trophy and The Rayne Cup. These later sold for a top price, for a pen of sheep, at £125 per head. The sale was lead however, by a flock dispersal on behalf of H Harrison, Brookfield who sold individual 2 crop ewes at £170, £160. Revived interest in the breed saw well bodied ewes regularly £92 - £105 (averaging £83), shearlings £90-£100 (averaged £81) and gimmer lambs £58 - £64 (averaged £59). Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 25th September The Annual Farmers Guardian Show and Sale of bullocks at Lancaster had a catalogued entry of 442 forward. Judge Rob Moran of Hellifield cast his expert eye over the pens out to show, before awarding the first place rosette to Stuart & Joan Cornthwaite of Caton with a pen of 4 Limousins which later sold for £1370, to the judge. There was a good show of Store Cattle throughout today, with trade topping at £1420 for a pair of Lim bullocks, again from S & JE Cornthwaite. A total of 22 animals sold in excess of £1300, with a 100% clearance achieved. Heifers sold to a top of £1310 from D & E Whitaker, Littlefell Farm. Angus bullocks sold to a top of £1310, from T & M Halhead, Upp Hall with Angus heifers selling to £1170 from EW & CR Clegg & Sons, Yew Tree Farm. A dip in deadweight prices didn’t have any effect on the live ring trade for Cast Cows, with plainer cows sharper on the week. Meaty cows a similar trade to last week. OTMs topped at 167.5ppk for a cast Sim Bull from Barlow Brothers, Croston. Black and Whites sold to 137.5ppk for a Heifer from Lawsons farm Ltd, Cockerham. Black and White cows to 134.5ppk from GB & EA Metcalfe & Son, Mansergh as well as MJ & H Atkinson, Quernmore.

An entry of 81 Store Lambs saw mules sell to £49 from PD Pye, Abbeystead. Other hill going breeds sold to £48 for Cheviots from SE & J Gorst, Littledale. Texels to £50.50 from MJ Joel, Dolphinholme. More needed at Hill Fair Day on Saturday 3rd October to meet buyers demand.

Monday 28th September The weekly sale of Prime Lambs had a reduced entry this week with just shy of a thousand being sold. Following the ethnic festival of EID at the end of last week trade was slightly less averaging 143ppk. Although this was reflected in many hill bred lambs forward and buyers extremely cautious of lambs under finished with vendors strongly advised to ensure lambs well finished to gain full financial benefit from their crop of lambs. Well finished lambs of all types good too sell with better types of Beltex lambs selling to of £86.50 or another pen selling to 179ppk both from Andrew Foy of Conder Green. Standard weight continental lambs well fleshed sold easily between 150ppk and 155ppk. Mule and Masham lambs selling three to four pound back on the previous week selling to £65 from D France of Isle of Skye.

Mules sold to a top of £64 for a trio from M & RW Stirzaker, Milnthorpe, to average £55.60. Horned ewes to £47 for a swales from WI & A Atkinson & Son and also from the same home to £44. Overall average of £52.70 for all forward.

Just the one Prime Bull forward today with more desperately needed at Lancaster. A Montbeliarde from GA Haston of Lane House sold to 171.5ppk. a couple of Angus heifers from Peter and Anne Bell of Village Farm sold to 187.5ppk and a heifer heavier sold to £1,018.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 24th September ‘Multi-Breed Sale sell to £1900 at North West Auctions J36’ The inaugural sale of pedigree Beef Breeding Cattle saw a top price of £1900 achieved for a Limousin Cow ‘Greenways Fancygirl’ with a bull calf at foot from R & S Mitchell, Lancaster, who also sold an in-calf Heifer ‘Greenways Izzy’, due in November to ‘Galileo’ at £1600. Native breeds saw a 10 year old Beef Shorthorn Cow with Calf sell to £1020 from MJ & JA Dodson, Howgill. Bulls sold to £1320 for a 3 year old Limousin from M Gibson, Greendale. The next multi-breed sale of pedigree cattle will be held in spring 2016 The weekly sale of Calves had another strong entry of calves following the previous week with a record entry of 141 forward it was nice to have another strong entry of 69 forward. A busy ring of buyers meant that all calves where easily bid for although trade for beef calves not as seen two months since but still easily selling as well as other centres with not many other centres able to boast the amount of active buyers around the ring. Limousin bull calves sold to £375 from Pritt Bros of Middle bank Farm with British Blue bulls selling to £360 from JW & D Robinson of Hollins Farm with all Blue bull calves averaging £345. Heifer calves continued to be wanted at J36 selling to £330 from B Mallinson of Raven Lodge for a British Blue. An entry of young Montbeliarde calves created plenty of interest selling to £180 from JJ & MA Park & Son of Low Sizergh and averaged £160. Black and white calves sold to a top of £160 and other best rearers easily selling in excess of £140. Young good rearing types selling between £80 and £110. The weekly sale of Store Lambs saw an increased ringside of buyers competing for all types of Lambs with a market average of £52.22 achieved. A top price of £68 was achieved for Suffolk x Lambs with batches of shorter keep lambs £55-£62, medium keep £52-£54 with only smallest sorts under £49. Hill Lambs sold to £59.50 for Mules (av. £49), Cheviot £55 and horned lambs £54. Store Lambs sold every week at J36.

Machinery Sale Saturday 26th September NWA J36 held their monthly collective sale of machinery and equipment on Saturday which included a special section for vintage machinery and agricultural bygones. An entry of 15 tractors & vehicles saw a JD2650 2wd sell for £2650, a Landrover Discovery (V Reg) at £1300 and a Road Sweeper at £1000. Livestock equipment sold to £1200 for an I.W. Trailer, £1000 for an I.W Horse Box. A large entry of seasonal equipment saw a McConnel saw bench achieve £1000, Muck Spreaders to £750, Bomford Hedge Cutter £550. The vintage and bygones attracted over 200 lots selling to £500 for MF Rear Wheels, £450 DB 2 Furrow Plough, Root Picker at £270, MF Grey Fergie parts at £200. Over 900 lots offered and sold at this popular sale. Entries now being taken for the next sale on Wednesday 28th October.

J36 Sale Reports Tuesday 29th September The weekly sale of Prime Lambs saw an entry of 1,844 forward selling to an overall market average of 140p/kg for lambs ranging from 29kg to 63kg. Best meated & well bred lambs achieving 150p – 155p per kilo peaking at 160p/kg for Texel x from SP Pease, Kirkby Lonsdale and £72 from DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland. Buyers showing caution towards under-finished lambs and also non-farm assured lambs. We encourage vendors to consider joining a farm assurance scheme or selling leaner lambs at our weekly Thursday store sale. Once again, another strong entry of Cast Ewes forward, with 564 being sold under the hammer. Lean ewes and feeding ewes in very strong demand, with strong and meated ewes good to sell, but not looking as dear compared to the leaner types. Cast rams a sharper trade than seen for some time at J36, with more interest in them selling to a top of £99 for a Blue Texel from C Hutchings of Hazel Head Farm, with Leicester rams from G Wightman of The Height. Better types of ewes easily selling into the eighties, topping at £89 from PW & D Swindlehurst of Tranthwaite Hall. Not as good show of mule ewes as the previous week, with mule ewes topping at £63 from David Moorhouse of High House. Other straight mules selling sixty pounds plus. Strong Rough Fell ewes easily selling in the fifties with a powerful pen of Swaledale ewes selling to £49 from RS Harker & Son of Grayrigg Hall. Plenty of strong and fit Swaledale ewes selling £38 plus. Leaner types and straight types easily selling £27 to £32.

We are pleased to welcome Willie Paterson AIA (Scot) as our new Livestock Manager and Auctioneer at North West Auctions. Willie has been an auctioneer since 1986 working for 13 yrs at United Auctions in Scotland, he also worked more recently at Cockermouth Auction and Forfar Auction in Scotland. During and after the 2001 Foot and Mouth outbreak he assisted a great number of Cumbrian farmers re-stock their farms. He knows the area but will be spending his first few months with us getting to really know the area really well. Highly respected for his livestock knowledge and assisting farmers with all types of marketing, whether through the live ring, farm to farm or direct to slaughter, Willie brings a wealth of knowledge of and contacts in the industry to NWA. He is very keen to meet all our customers will be seen at Lancaster every Friday and at J36 on Tuesday and Thursday but will also be out on the road leading the rest of the livestock team and field staff as they continue to strengthen our relationship with all our customers. Willie takes a keen interest in football (Glasgow Rangers) and also conducts a large number of Charity Auctions nationally. He has recently relocated to Kendal.
