NWA Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 30th January Less Calves forward this morning, trade for the best sorts remains high with 11 week Lim Bulls selling to £465 from Stephen Robinson, Longber. Other Lim bulls, a touch younger at only a month sold to £420 from WN & D Smith, Cockerham. Blue Bulls sold to a top of £415 from Dave Harrison, Wray and others at £400 again from Messers Robinson. All blue bulls forward averaged £385. Heifers sold to £360 for Blues from the same good home. Other younger sorts to £330 from Phillip Halhead, Cockerham. Strong Friesian calves in demand, selling to a top of £142 & £138 from Wallbank Farms, others from TD & V Whitaker, to £132. Younger fleshy calves £40-£50 with small plain sorts a fraction less. Just two Blue Bull Stirks sold to £445 from H & VE Jolly, Great Eccleston. Winning the Dugdale calf competition for January was WN & D Smith, Cocker House with today’s Lim bull at 32days realising £420 selling to ST Birkett, Nether Kellet. Both Vendor and Purchaser will receive 3 bags of feed courtesy of Dugdale Nutrition.

The Cast Cow and OTM trade continues to improve with only negative been that not enough cows forward as more could have easily been sold to vendors advantage. An entry of 74 forward sold to an overall average of 115ppk with cows averaging 112ppk and cast heifers averaging 144ppk. Cast heifers sold to a top price of 179.5ppk from AW & AM Park & Sons of Ellel. Cast cows topped at 151.5ppk from D Cockett of Wilson Wood with a meaty Limousin x cow. Dairy Cows topped at 129.5ppk from Gary Atkinson of Abbotson Farm with other well meated cows selling 120ppk plus with parlour cows selling 100ppk plus regularly.

A packed ring of buyers and, once again, a very strong trade for Store Cattle at Lancaster, shows Lancaster continues to be the store cattle centre of the north. All classes of cattle where keenly sought after with large steers continuing to demand a premium at Lancaster. This week’s top price came from David Moorhouse of High House Farm selling a trio of 21 month old Charolais steers to £1,450. Closely following this was the Capstick Family of Whicham Hall selling four Limousin steers to £1,430 at 20 to 22 month old. Heifers topped at £1370 for a Charolais from Jim Bracken of Greenlands Farm. Younger cattle where in strong demand with many local farm buyers looking to replace theit outgoing large cattle. An impressive 47 cattle achieved £1200 pound or more with all steers forward selling to an overall market average of £1041.

Monday 2nd February The exchange rate and current uncertainty in Europe is beginning to slightly affect the Prime Hogg trade with many exporters very cautious. Lancaster sold to a slightly less average than last week’s sale but in line with many other centres at the end of the week. Fed lambs and well finished lambs continue to sell to a premium as continentals sold between 188ppk and 200ppk. The overall market average was 180ppk. Texel hoggs sold to a top price of £98 from Ken Kelsall of Brown.

Cast Sheep trade continues to be good with all classes of sheep in strong demand. Strong continental ewes sold £90+ today, topping at £108 twice first for a Suffolk ewe from David Preston of Ellers Farm and then a Charollais ram from Ken Kelsall of Brown Brook. Mule ewes sold into the eighties but buyers very cautious on over-fat ewes.

More quality Prime Bulls on offer this week at Lancaster led to a stronger trade. Limousin bulls sold to 187.5ppk twice with other beef bred bulls easily selling in the 180’s ppk. Montbeliarde bulls sold to 177.5ppk.

NWA J36 Sale Reports Thursday 29th January The weekly sale of Calves had an entry of 11 forward and sold to a blistering trade. All calves forward this week where Black and Whites and sold to a solid trade beating many local centres. Topping at £100 was a five week old bull calf from R & J Dodgson of Cracalt Farm. Rearing calves easily sold £45 plus with better ones £65 plus. Overall average £49.55.

A sharper trade then expected at J36 for Store Hoggs especially with the recent drop in prime hogg prices and uncertainty with the Euro. A very mixed show in quality as many people come to the end of their crop of hoggs. Short keep Continental hoggs eagerly sought after selling to a top of £76 for Charollais from DN Smith of Fell House and plenty of pens of short keep Continentals and Suffolks selling between £68 and £72. A very mixed entry of Mules saw all pens sell to their value topping at £71 from M & R Lawson of Lincolns Inn Farm. Horned hoggs sold to a top of £62 from Clarke Bros with Rough Fells. All Horned hoggs forward sold to a market average of £54. All hoggs sold to an overall market average of £60.37 for 521 entered.

Tuesday 3rd February North West Auctions held their weekly sale of primestock at J36 on Tuesday where a reduced entry of 1700 prime hoggs and cast sheep were sold to a full ringside of buyers with all classes of sheep meeting a sharper trade than anticipated and with prices well ahead of other local markets.

A very mixed show of Prime Hoggs on offer with the well finished hoggs strongly competed for, whilst the plainer sorts were harder to sell. Hoggs peaked at £100 per head for a pen of Suffolk x from S & M Cooper of Leece and a top price per kilo of 228.6p/kg for Texel x hoggs from Messrs Dean & Brennand of Clapham. A very pleasing overall average of 185.65p/kg was achieved with an SQQ of 187.41p/kg.

Once again all classes of Cast Sheep met a very strong trade with a top price of £132 for a Texel from Michael Barker of Halton. Mule ewes regularly £90£95 and topping at £97 for a big pen of heavy Mule ewes from R & E Ladds of Benson Hall with leaner sorts £70-£75. Horned ewes to £68 for Swaledales and £72 for Rough Fell.
